Charles Barkley Is Wrong, Sixers Don’t Need To Lose

I don’t agree with Charles Barkley, in fact I think he’s an idiot. I completely disagree with his thinking that it’s best for the 76ers to lose now in order to get high draft picks in the near future.

We have a young enough team already and unless they plan on getting rid of some of these talented young players, adding more young players is not the key. We need a center most of all. A stud center would be best, but a defensive-minded, strong rebounding center would do the trick as well. Imagine fielding a starting squad of:

Point Guard – Jrue Holiday (decent scorer, distributor and good defender)
Shooting Guard – Evan Turner (decent scorer, distributor and good defender)
Small Forward – Andre Iguodala (decent scorer, distributor and great defender)
Power Forward – Elton Brand (decent scorer, pretty good defender)
Center – Enter rebounding defensive Big Man here (maybe decent scorer, low post presence, really good rebounding, defender)

Thaddeus Young will eventually replace Brand as the team’s power forward. He’s a decent scorer and still seems to be improving in that area as well as an improving defender. Hopefully Turner and Holiday will improve their scoring, which they both look like they can do as their careers continue.

Iggy can continue being a great defender and play point forward where he is better suited distributing the ball.

Barkley is an idiot. He says things, and if you disagree your kidding yourself, that are over the top and offensive. Dude has no filter. He does keep it real and is a pretty good b-ball analyst but shut up and talk b-ball. Noone cares what your non-educated self thinks about social issues. WTF would we lose games and try to get a better pick?Recent history shows the draft is full of garbage and overrated college prima-donas who arent ready for a grown mans game.

And i dont play golf and think its a “game” not a sport, but i’ve never seen a celeb/athlete look more awful trying too hit a golf ball in my life.

One player that may have been alittle injury prone but that I feel can helpp the sixers at the center position, his name is:

GREG ODEN

I feel the sixers should look into acquiring him next season, they may even be able to get him for cheap, after this latest fluke injury it seems to me that his injury days are behind him

Here’s a couple of Centers that may be available that could give the Sixers
an inside presence without costing then an arm and a leg

Cristain Okafor (New Orleans Hornets)
Roy Hibbert (Indiana Pacers)
Hasheem Thabeet (Houston Rockets)
Ryan Hollins (Cleveland Cavaliers)
Jeff Foster (Indiana Pacers)
Brad MIller (Houston Rockets)

Its not like there are alot of big men out there and I think this years NBA Draft doesn’t appear to be real deep and especially at the Center position..
Which is why players like Eric Dampier, Dwight Howard, J Magliore, N Mohammed, J O’Neil and S O’Neal,& Theo Ratliff all still play in the NBA..
There is not enough young talent out there being developed at the Center position to push these old guys into retirement where they belong..
It’s a joke, just like the NBA has become..

I agree G… Charles Barkley is an idiot. I loved him as a player, but his commentary leaves a lot to be desired. That Greg Oden gamble could pay off… Lose to get a better player, that’s just dumb. I live in DC now, the Wizards have undertaken a losers mentality and it has worn then down. They have just as much talent as the Sixers, but they do not play hard, or are badly coached.

I think whoever Curtis Collins is….is an idiot. Thaddeus Young needs to replace Andre Iggy. Iggy is a GREAT defender but he has shown that he can’t carry a team. We need to trade him for a young CENTER and/or young SG (OJ Mayo?) — Evan turner isn’t going to replace anybody. He’s a roleplayer. It’s all he will ever be. Brand is efficient but not worth the money. I like the direction the team is heading. There’s still too many holes tho.

Future of the Sixers:

PG: Jrue Holiday
SG: ??????
SF: Thaddeus Young
PF: Brand or ?????
C: ??????

Bench: Evan Turner, Jodie Meeks, Spencer Hawes, Lou Williams

Like I said, the future looks bright…but still too many holes to be considered a legitimate contender anytime soon. You never know tho.

What Greg Oden has on his side is youth he’s still so young so he still has a lot of basketball left in his career. We keep hearing coach collins talk about our lack of size and a shot blocking presence. I feel we should take a serious look at acquiring Greg Oden next season

You can’t win without stars. Did you see the end of the Thunder game? That’s what happens when you don’t have a star.

Holiday is solid
Turner may become solid, right now he’s below average
Iggy is a good player who is already in his prime and will only decline and has a contractual albatros. He makes nearly as much as Lebron
Brand can’t jump. He’s solid, but already on the decline. He’s also a contractual albatros.
Thad is a decent energy bench player. If he’s your starting PF, you suck.
Lou Williams is a decent energy bench player

There is no future for this team the way it’s constructed. The ONLY hope for the 6ers is if the CBA allows them to dump Iggy or Brand without a cap hit.

birdgang – you have a point, but I see abosutely 0 chance Portland would be willing to give up greg oden. it takes two to tango. ALSO, I see 0 indication he’ll ever play more than 5 consecutive NBA games…. just cause he hasn’t been reinjured recently, that doesn’t indicate anything, ITS BECAUSE HE’S REHABING….

trading for a prospect that won’t play basketball for you is worthless

Schiller… good point. But I feel that the sixers don’t have anything to lose. They may even be able to get him for cheap Portland looks to be going in a different direction and ready to move on from Oden. The sixers gotta at least see what it would take to get him.

Keep in mind too how young he is, a lot more basketball left to play for him. Plus what center in this upcoming draft really stands out as someone we just gotta have? There isn’t one so Oden makes sense to me. If and this is a strong if he’s healthy and ready to go

We took a chance with Brand and now its paying off he’s playing some good ball

“We took a chance with Brand and now its paying off he’s playing some good ball”

No, it’s not paying off. He’s killing the cap with a max salary and playing “decent”. He’s also on his last legs.

That signing has doomed the team for 3 more years unless the new CBA gives them an out.

Bgang. Again I hear you, I just feel like if there is any chance he’s still a viable option, Portland wouldn’t let him go. And if they do, it’s not going to be cheap, hence we WILL lose something…

didn’t we have the worst record in the league midway through the season , the year oden and durant came out or am i wrong ? that would have been the year to keep losing but cheeks got them on a roll. it is nice watching a young team play there hearts out and seem to gel together .

guys, guys,,easy..
It takes years for a team to go from irrelevant to just .500 like the Sixers have
and now it will take another 2-3 Years to be the Playoff COmpetetive..
The Good thing in the EAst is that the Celtics run is about over,
the Miami Heat are overrated, but the Bulls, Knicks and Magic are the real contendors for the Sixers over the next 3-5 years…

Mugzybrown- you don’t think having brand on the roster is paying off? We were in need of a power forward and we got one. It cost us a lot but we had to spend. The contract that’s really killing us is iguodalas being that he really was overpaid, brand took less to come here remember? And I wouldn’t say he’s on his Last leg at all he’s playing very solid ball 16pts 8-9 rebs leads the team in scoring a rebounding. We needed a vet power forward like brand and he was the only one attainable at the time

Schiller -that’s why it wouldn’t hurt to check it out and see what they’d want for him. Like I said portland seems to be going in a different direction and about ready to see what they can get for him

How did my reply from the Charles Barkley article get up here????? Apparently G or whoever liked my comment on the original article about Charles Barkley. I came on a little bit ago and was clicking through the new articles and saw this, and was shocked. Kinda funny though to see my name up there like I am a sports writer or something.

Also, I should have further elaborated when I said that we need a Center. A veteran one would be key, not specifically someone that is like 30+, but someone that has already established themselves in the league. Not another young player, not a rookie Center, not someone that needs to adjust to the NBA game. We have enough young players that are finally starting to gel.

By the way, no relation to Doug Collins.

yeah lets go get Oden and maybe Jeff Ruland too. lol. The sixers are toast until they clear cap space and or make a trade for a superstar, until then they are mediocre, capable of beating anyone in the regular season and able to beat no one during the playoffs. DONT GET FOOLED THEY STINK AND HAVE NO SHOT!
