Sixers Show Their Grit, By Outworking The Conference-Leading Celtics

Somebody tell the Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics that they don’t need to bring their picnic baskets and blankets to Philadelphia any more because they will not have any more picnics in the City of Brotherly Love. From now on, they had better come here ready to fight for the entire game.

You’ve got to give Doug Collins and Sixers team credit for what they have become. They have been developed into a tough, gritty basketball teach, that will fight every minute they’re on the court.

Their 89-86 win over the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics last night wasn’t a demonstration of great shooting or great playmaking. The Sixers beat the Celtic last night because they wanted the game more. They outworked them down the stretch by playing better team defense, which meant not giving up any easy shots.

Their defense kept Boston’s stars in check. Rajon Rondo had only 12 points on six for 12 shooting. Kevin Garnett was held to 14 on 5 for 13 shooting. Paul Pierce got off only seven attempts while being held to 11. Ray Allen finished the game connecting on only two of 11 shots for a miniscule five points.

These guys didn’t have big nights because they were forced out of their comfort zones and limited to taking difficult shots.

The Sixers also did the job on the boards by getting contributions from everybody. Philadelphia center Spencer Hawes showed up with a stellar game, which included 14 points, 10 rebounds and even three assists. The major problem with Hawes is that they can’t get that performance from him most nights.

Andre Iguodala made a key shot on a drive down the stretch to put the Sixers in position to win. I like the fact that he was thinking about attacking the hoop in that situation and not relying on that fall away jumper, which rarely falls with the game on the line.

He continued to show his ability to create as a point forward by dishing out eight assists, along with nine rebounds and 13 points. Iguodala’s strength is his ability to contribute in every facet of the game. Give Collins credit for putting Iguodala in a place where he can succeed.

He’s not dominating scorer like Kobe Bryant or Dwayne Wade or LeBron James, who all can take over a game and score time after time down the floor in order to carry their team to victory. Iguodala is more of a distributor, an all around player who has the ability to create a good opportunity for himself or a teammate if he’s given the ball at the right time in the flow of the offense.

He can play great defense. He can also rebound, then get out on the floor and run. No he’s not a Superstar but he could be a key cog for a good team that has other good players.

Elton Brand had a nice games while contributing 14 points with his intermediate jumpers. Jodie Meeks dropped in 12 by hitting a couple of three-pointers.

Point guard Jrue Holiday didn’t have a particularly good night shooting the ball, but as usually his defense was stellar and he scored nine points and dished out seven assists. I give kudos for limiting Rondo to only five assists because the Boston point has the ability to take over a game.

The Sixers also got nice performances off the bench from Thaddeus Young and Lou Williams.

It was a great win for the squad.

Big win for the team as they continue to develop confidence and character as the Season progresses.. I guarantee 1 thing, none of the Top 4 Seeds in NBA East want to face this Sixer Team in the 1st Round…

Nobody can tell me its not all about coaching, Doug Collins took over the same team as last year and has turned them into one of the scariest teams out there, Whats scary about this is its only his first year, what happens when he goes into year two and they find a servicable center? Way to go Sixers!!!!

Great great team win I’m proud of these guys stepping up and leading throughout this entire game. The east sure does need to look out for the sixers bc they can beat you in an array of ways, out scoring you, locking you down on defense and out hustling you

This teams toughness should be noted as well. They not only outplayed boston but they were tougher and they took it to a whole nother level in the fourth quarter. The sixers match up well with everyone in the east besides orlando bc of the impact that Dwight Howard has on a game. So I look for the sixers to continue to gain experience with wins like this. Playing a high caliber team and taking it to them

We applaud you Sixers keep it going we have a very important road trip upcoming stay focused and play your game

I don’t wanna hear anymore words about trade iggy yada yada yada enough. The guy is one of the top sg/sf defenders in this league and one of the best all around players in this league, everyone needs to stop expecting him to be be a lebron or kobe bc he’s not them, there aren’t many players on this earth like them so give it a rest

Birdo- I can’t believe you would come on here and mention what turner didn’t do in a win. It doesn’t make sense. Tell me who had a great game individually from either team? This was a total team win, stop waiting for a rookie to fail, your gonna fustrate yourself, just enjoy the process and the win

Bird im starting to agree with you, fact is the kid is scared it reminds me of when G would say “Hey Richie BOO!” Like my old football coach would say he needs to grow a set. Turner has no swag at all, just no confidence at all. A.I. gave up size every night and yet he always outworked and out hustled his man, this guy is lazy on D, has no shot, and cant create his own shot. The only guy on the roster who can create his own shot is Holiday.Maybe Lou but he’s a gunner so I wont count him.
