Andy Reid Must Give Michael Vick More Control Of The Offense

I want to see Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg push the envelope when they get the chance to work with Michael Vick this offseason. They need to let him call more of the plays on the field. Take off the training wheels. Anybody who has ever learned to ride a bicycle knows that you can’t go as fast with training wheels still on the bike.

Take them off, Andy.

They should use more no huddle offense to put defenses in a bind when they’re trying to get certain personnel on and off the field.

Reid and Mornhinweg must give up some of the control. They’ve had control for over a decade and we have no rings. Give up the control and let Vick run the show. If they spot a vulnerability in the defense, they go for the jugular, they don’t wait to get to the sideline to ask the coach if it’s alright to change the play.

Do you see the freedom and control Aaron Rodgers has in Green Bay? How about Drew Brees in New Orleans? What about Peyton Manning in Indianapolis? What do these quarterbacks have that we don’t? Control isn’t the only thing they have that we don’t have yet here in Philadelphia.

That’s the kind of control that Vick should have here. I know that would be nearly impossible if the lockout isn’t ended soon, but if it is, I want to see the training wheels taken off the Eagles quarterback.

I want to see Vick challenged to see how great does he want to be. We all know this offense must be unstoppable if they want to win a Super Bowl. I want to see Vick pressured to take his knowledge of the offense up to a level where a team is afraid to blitz this team with all of these weapons.

Vick needs to be calling and changing more of the plays to combat the blitzing. Again, I want to see Andy take the training wheels off of the quarterback in this offense. They controlled everything when Donovan McNabb was the quarterback and they won a lot of games, but they didn’t win any Super Bowls. Let’s try it a different way.

I want to see the controls of this offense handed over to Michael Vick. Maybe we need to have it done in a ceremony at Lincoln Financial Field on the day of the draft. I think that decision is just as important as who they decide to draft.

Reid should let Vick make the changes necessary and go with the play that he feels good about. Let’s say he walks to the line and sees a defense that can’t stop DeSean Jackson or Jeremy Maclin from getting deep. He should immediately change the play and go for the kill.

He should also be able to check out of a play against the blitz to go after a weakness in a defense. There’s no defense that is good against everything and that’s the advantage of letting the quarterback make decisions on the field.

Many times the quarterback sees the adjustment that needs to be made before anybody else because he’s on the field. Sure there are times when the coaches see if first, but this offense has to adjust much quicker than it has in the past. The team never truly adjusted to the blitzing strategy which was being employed by nearly every defense they faced in the second half of the season.

That can’t be allowed to happen again.

At least give him the chance to sink or swim. If they make some improvements up front, nobody should be able to stop this offense, once Vick shows he’s able to make the adjustments on the fly.

No more waiting until he gets to the sidelines to make adjustments. The longer we keeping waiting to make adjustments the longer we wait for a Lombardi Trophy.

Do you Eagles fans feel me? I started yelling at the screen during the season, change the play, they’re blitzing again.

I totally disagree. Andy Reid is a genius and way smarter than you me and Iggles, Paulman, Birdo and schiller put together. Instead of having in God we trust on a dollar bill it should be in Andy we trust. Best coach to ever coach the game.

But seriously we all want this drastic way for the eagles to change their philosophy some what but at the same time we credit them for their outstanding job they have done year in and year out at coming close to winning. I dont care about coming close to winning I want to WIN the whole thing. Not trying to sound like Charlie Sheen here btw

In football there is just this curse laid upon it. Only way you win a championship is to stink one year win a superbowl and to stink the next year. There is no Im good every year and eventually win a superbowl. NO it doesnt work like that. Only a few selected teams have ever done that so history is not on our sides. As dumb as I sound its true

It would be great to do this G, as well as use some crossing routes to take advantage of our speed horizontally. But the point is, this is not going to happen. If they weren’t going to let Mcnabb do this, why would they all of a sudden give Vick control.

Also, lets not forget that Vick was unbelievable in Andy’s system. If your project his numbers to an 16 game schedule, this is what you get.

Passing
4024 yards 28tds 8 ints

Rushing
901 yards 12tds

Thats 4925 total yards, 40 total tds and 8ints. Give this guy more time to learn the offense, a better offensive line, better play calling and more control, and let some of the youngsters mature, can you imagine what his numbers would be like?

I agree GARRY! U hit it right on the head!!!!!! Through Vick’s early years in Atlanta he had 3 guys he could rely on…… Dunn, Crumpler and himself LOL! Reid and MM should let him takeoff with this solid core we have today….. The results you get with a kid on training wheels…. Once they hit grass…… You can keep pedalling……. But your going nowhere……. I justh think that Reid is such a control freak with his judgment on play-calling that I’ve rarely see Mcnabb call any audibles throughout his career in Philly????? IF someone finds any footage please let me know????? Is there any type of post game interview with Mcnabb saying I seen something different and I called and audible for our advantage????? Peyton manning, drew Brees, and Eli Manning i’ve seen such…… But Mcnabb??????? Reid’s play-calling are written in stone!!!!!!

Nice use of Tecmo science to explain why Big Red cant seem to adjust on the fly Jroc.

Sometimes i do wonder wtf we did wrong to warrant such torture as football fans. So close and no cigar…and its always due to some b.s.. Reciever not fighting off a pick, weather effecting a game, coach getting his lunch money taken, and so on. Ive even resorted to becoming a kinder and gentler football fan when i see the oppurtunity to do so. Telling NY,Dallas, and Skins fans i repsect there history and there squads past titles. Not going over the top when it comes to the players and there performances. Hopefully the football gods see this and we hoist the trophy in 12′.

Andy needs to let Mike check off more often…run the pill…tell him its your show…you’ve proven to be worthy. Can anyone see the neagtive in this move? There would be some mistakes but far more success when it comes to adjustments and strategy. Mikes on the front line and he carries himself like a pro now so let him run the show.

this is to fix what problem? Our offense clicked. We need to improve the oline, but, aside from the pick Vick threw, our O is fine. Why argue about fixing something that ain’t broken?

100% agree… I was baffled last season when I learned that they dont really have alot audibles or hots in this offense… They have excellent shots to change the play at the line and run the ball. Vick and the offense could really take it to another level if Reid can give MV more control under center

Our offense clicked when teams werent sending all the dogs at us. A legit title contender cant have Max Jean Belly band and Nick Sausage Neck Cole as the linch pins inside. We need total upgrades and need a blue chipper on that side.Jamal back healthy and slide Mike outside or get a rook to start. And let Mike call some plays.

Shiller,it is broken when we get to crunch time and the chains arent moving unless Mike puts on the cape. At some point they need to adjust and punch the d back in the mouth . It just doesnt happen enough.

Basically whenever the Eagles face an experienced Coaching staff with good Offensive/Defensive Coordinators, the Eagles fail and get outcoached…
2 years ago those back to back blowout loses to the Cowboys with Wade Phillips and then OC Jason Garrett were downright embarrasing and full time ass-wuppings. Then last year in the game vs the Vikings who had nothing by pride to play for come into Philly with a 1st year player starting his 1st NFL game as a QB (J Webb) where the Eagles still had a shot at #2 Overall and lay a terrible egg at home, in front of a National audience and never made blitz protection adjustments all game and VIck never adapted either..People still want to rank Coach AR at #3 for Best Coaches in the NFL, Hello… Does anyone watch other teams or Coaches around the league..

Im not feeling 3-13 Bird. I need adjustments and not getting your lunch taken from you by other pro coaches. See Pauls comments about Dallas.Mccarthy out coached the boys this winter. At home…with a goddamn rookie nobody at tailback.

Also, good stuff Jroc! (Tecmo Bowl playcallin); I miss Tecmo Bowl – dam near the best video game of football made!(Though Madden was straight up until 05). Me and my 3 brothers were born a year apart and played the hell out of Tecmo Bowl. “You lost, next man up, pass the control fool”. Lol!

They all have Coaches that realize the talent and skills these QB has and as leaders of their respective teams, allow them to make some calls and change thhings up instead of trying to control every play they do to somehow look “smarter” than the other coaches on the field.. When you have the Specail talent on your team and on the the Field, let him do some things and make the adjustment based on the player/QB is seeing on the field.. I would think Vick could handle this at least in certain situations to keep th edefense even more on their heels…

Wasn’t Rodgers an all academic Pac-10 student….scored a 39 on the wonderlic?
Didn’t Brees get a college degree….Academic all american player of the year?
Didn’t Manning finish his college degree in 3 years, but still returned for his senior season?

Perhaps to be allowed to run an offence, a coach first has to belive the QB knows how to read and study the entire playbook, analyze info, think and process said info quickly.

Do we have that in Mr. 2 yrs of college, 20 on the wonderlick Vick?

BTW, has anyone happened to take the wonderlick online? You could score a 20 by throwing darts blindfolded.

I couldnt agree more with this article. Reid and whoever his offensive cordinator have been the monguls behind the offense for years. And they have dont great but i think to get over the hump a good coach must let the qb change plays on the field if they feel its neccessary. Donovan had like 3 audibels throughout his entire career and one was the shovel pass underneath to westbrook. I never saw any other plays! Its time to let them play! Let vick switch things up here and there. Gotta start sometime. But truthfully……Its been this way for 10 years what do you think is gonna change now……….. definition of insanity- to do the same things repeatitly and expect a different result!

Vinnie your are the dumbest of asses! RealTalk!

The wonderlic test doesn’t mean a damn thing…of course there are many QB’s that scored higher than McNabb, but how many of them actually has had a better NFL career? The number of those that had a better career is much smaller compared to those who had no success….
If you were to go by DMac’s score, he should probably of been a backup his whole career…however, his production on the football field showed otherwise…Same can be said for Vick!

What was your boys’ Kolb score on the wonderlic? 28, right? is he a better QB than Vick? wonderlic doesnt mean a damn thing

Below is a few more scores of players on the wonderlic, who scored higher than McNabb and Vick….all I have to ask is who the hell are some of these cats? and for the others we know about, fact is their careers is not more successful than Vick’s nor McNabbs!

Omar Jacobs – 38
Matt Leinart – 35
Kellen Clemens – 35
Charlie Whitehurst – 33
Jay Cutler – 26
Drew Stanton (MSU) – 35
John Beck (BYU) – 30
Brady Quinn (ND) – 29
Kevin Kolb (Houston) – 28
Matt Guitierrez (Idaho State) – 28

You’re right in one sense Realtalk, but ignore the corollary to your point:

While its true….not all QBs with scores over 25 become SB champs (or even successful players)……..You ignore the fact all SB champs over the past decade have scores over 25…

Can we not say…not all QBs who score high are SB QBs, but all SB QBs score high on the test.

Add to that….the wonderlic is but one indicator.

You also convieninetly ignore the fact that the 3 QBs mentioned in the article were all 4 year University Graduates. One was a conference all-academic award winner, the other a All-american academic award winner. Of the last 10 SB winners…8 are uni grads. I’ll take those odds. I’ll also include their W scores (if found)

Elway – 4 year degree in economics from Stanford
Warner 4 year grad. 35
Dilfer…3 years in uni
B. Johnson – 4 year degree – currently teaches at a small university
Brady – 4 year degree 33
Rothlessb – 3 years uni 25
Peyton – 4 year degree 28
Eli – 4 year grad in marketing 39
Brees – 4 year degree. Academic all-american. 28
Rodgers – 4 year degree. Pac-10 academic award. 39

Vick 2 yrs college. 20. Good times.

Sorry to tell you eaglefan4life…this isn’t Terry Bradsshaw’s day anymore. That guy completed 18 passes over his first 2 superbowls. Ds today are more complex. Offensive playboks are hundreds of pages long.

You guys go on and on about arm strength and mobility as the be all and end all of Qbing….I think intelligence is more important that either of those. You don’t and that’s fine. Unfortunately I won’t be able to cheer when Vick brings a SB to the Birds…..because it isn’t going to happen.

Maybe I was watching someone different, but as I recall, Donovan McNabb could barely call the plays that were sent in from the sideline. When the situation called for Donovan to think on his feet, he was normally hyperventilating. Let’s not BS each other – we all know that Donovan was not up to the task of calling audibles. However, I have heard Donovan say on many occasions that he could change plays when ever he wanted to.

Michael Vick is a QB that has been his own “check down” for his whole career. When Vick sees the play breakdown he becomes his own “check down”. He has not spent his whole career learning to read defenses like slower immobile QB’s, like Manning and Brees. I don’t think you will see Vick changing many plays, even if he has the power.

Vinnie
Academics really? That is ridicolous! Yes some players may know more about science, history, business, psychology….than other players do, due to a more extensive college education….
But what does that have to do with football? Football is learned in a different manner, just like any sport! Most of the players have been learning football snce they were little kids! You get better in sports by practice, game play, game situations! All of the QB’s that you mention are few of many of those that have 3 years + in college, that have won SB’s (you forget to look at the other side, while instructing me that I fail to see, blah blah blah)…

Make a list of all of the QB’s that have 4 year degrees that have not won SB’s..

Also I do see what you are saying, and what your doing is stating the obvious! Intelligence is important! Well, Duh! But how you are measuring a professional football player of being intelligent, is incorrect. Academics/wonderlic test aside, Can you do your job?
