Jayson Werth Finally Goes Deep For Nats

Former Phillies right fielder Jayson Werth hit his first home run as a Washington National Thursday night in Florida. Werth came into the night batting .278 with no home runs or RBI’s but that all changed on a 0-1 fastball from Marlins’ pitcher Josh Johnson. Werth took the Johnson pitch a few inches over the right field wall, the play at first glance appeared to be a triple, but after review was ruled a home run.

Through one week of baseball Ben Francisco, Werth’s replacement in Philadelphia is putting up better offensive numbers. Francisco is batting .333 with two home runs, six RBI’s and six runs scored. Werth is batting a respectable .272 with one home run, one RBI and three runs scored , but is that really worth $126 million?

Yes, there is only one week of baseball in the books, but it appears Ruben Amaro Jr. has made another good move. Werth’s numbers in 2011 should go down by default, since he is a member of the Washington Nationals, he can not play 18 games against them as he has the past few seasons.

Instead of going against John Lannan and over the hill pitchers like Livan Hernandez, he will face two Cy Young Award winners and a World Series MVP, during his 18 games against the 4-time defending NL East Champion Phillies. Werth should shave that stupid beard, because those guys will not fear it.

Wonder at the end of the day, If Jason Werth really cares about winning and playing for Championships or what fans think… He and many generations of the Werth Family will be taken care of financially long after his playing days are over so I guess he will ultimately have the last laugh (or loudest laugh)..

I don’t think Werth would’ve gotten booed at all, but then he had to talk trash on the Phils. C’mon Jayson…you know that without the Phils, there’s no way you would have commanded a 126 million dollar pay day. You owe them at least some class or even just a soft, muttering “Thanks.”
