Surprise, Jayson Werth Is Cheered In Return To Philly

Despite being booed by Phillies fans in Washington last month, former Phillie and current National’s right fielder Jayson Werth received a standing ovation from Phillies fans when he returned to Philadelphia.

There were a few boo’s mixed in but 80 percent of the capacity crowd at Citizens Bank Park cheered him before his first at bat. The fans cheered Werth yet again in the middle of the first inning as Werth took his place in right field.

A simple tip of the helmet gesture by Werth turned many booing Phillies fans into cheering ones. Werth’s acknowledgment of the fans showed that he appreciated the love he received from them in his three years in Philadelphia.

The nod by Werth was brilliant; the quickest way to win over Philadelphia fans is to praise them. Kiss the fan’s back sides and they will love you for it. The Philadelphia fan is not a complex individual; they are a self loving group of people, and demand respect. Listen to 610 WIP or 97.5 the Fanatic over the course of a day and at least one or two callers will chime in and mention how Philadelphia fans are the most knowledgeable fans in all of sports.

Werth proved the way to win over a raucous crowd of Philadelphia sports fans is show them respect, stroke the fans ego and they will love you. Werth’s gesture turned the entire stadium in his favor, it was the biggest fan turn around since the Russians cheered for Rocky instead of Ivan Drago at the end of ROCKY IV.

The fans granted Werth mercy for at least an inning, he may not have deserved two standing ovations, but he earned it by showing the city he appreciated his time in Philly.

· Werth not only National to be cheered

Jayson Werth wasn’t the only National Phillies fans cheered last night. Fans went wild as National’s 250 pound reliever Todd Coffey sprinted from the bullpen to the pitcher’s mound. A fat guy sprinting around the stadium on Dollar Dog night is more Philadelphian than the Cheese Steak and the fans loved him for it. Coffey must have thought the Phillie Phanatic was still on his four wheeler giving out free hotdogs.

Great to see by the Philly fans and then acknowledged and reciprocated back by Werth.. he was a good player who came to work everyday and was ready to play, never any type of excuses from Werth and one of the Reasons why Fans appreaciated his efforts and time here while playing for the Phils …
Wish him the best, but hope he goest hitless vs the Phils
