Roseman On Asomugha Signing: You Can’t Have Too Many Cover Cornerbacks

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman was sitting at the podium with a little smile on his face. He looked like the cat who had swallowed the canary. The GM said he, Andy Reid and rest of the front office haven’t had time to think about how they will line up with the talented three cornerbacks, but he said you can never have enough of them.

Roseman said that they wanted to go heavy with cover cornerbacks because last year they felt they got caught a bit short. He’s right they did get caught short last year and wound up with the worst red zone defense in the last 25 years of the NFL. That won’t happen this time around with the three Pro Bowl cornerbacks.

You’ve got to give Reid, Roseman and Joe Banner credit because they said they were going to make a splash and they have made a splash. They’ve added three Pro Bowl players to their defense. Not one, not two but three Pro Bowl players.

The young General Manager talked about measuring the talent on this football team against the World Champion Green Bay Packers. He talked about all of the outstanding receivers which the Packers have on their roster and how they seem to have such a high number of them.

Roseman said that Asante Samuel’s absence from practice has nothing to do with the signing of Asomugha.

As far as he, Roseman is concerned they saw an outstanding player and jumped on the opportunity to acquire him.

The GM says the Birds are still under the cap despite the $12 million dollars a year that Asomugha will make.

As I see it, the Eagles did a great job in the past of managing their cap, so that they really spent much less money that the maximum. Now they have to spend right up against the cap, so obviously they have a lot of money to spend. Remember they spent this money while knowing that they still have to pay DeSean Jackson.

Asante and DRC can’t play safety because they can’t tackle, it would be a waste to put DRC on a 3rd wide receiver

Hopefully he’s telling the truth about having enough cover CBs and not just blowing smoke to cover a trade. I rather keep the 3 CBs because when it comes time to play against the good teams, they will pass the ball. And when it’s time to run the ball, get Asante out the game because it’s not like he’s tackling anyone anyway.

Rumor has it that Asante Samuel will be dealt. DRC plays strictly on the RCB and Asomugha strictly plays on the left. Samuel is due to make 9 million this year. Look for Samuel to be dealt which is fine. Maybe we can get a #1 pick from Arizona for him.

scorpiodsu

July 29, 2011 9:23 pm

dag, if he’s traded I doubt a 1 pick. That’s probably a bit too much for a CB his age that make that much money. We see how bad they wanted Kolb and he didn’t net a 1. Don’t usually give up #1 picks for a CB position. Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised to see his traded. That’s a lot of money in the CB position and you need to free up some money for Desean and to fill out the rest of the roster. Our 1st round draft pick still isn’t signed either.

Hopefully Paulman moved on to the cowboys site, what a great day for dallas losing nnamdi and getting Paulman. If that ain’t a kick to the balls nothing is. I’m pretty sure jerry jones developed a facial tick today. Good luck trying to pass the ball with babin and cole lined up 5 yards outside flying up field and 3 shut down corners.

well i heard we cant get any higher then a 3rd for samuel, i’d rather a linebacker if anything. but i rather keep all three, if you didn’t watch roseman interview he went around the question about trading samuel but he hinted about cutting the fat off the eagles roster. maybe like julio hansons 30 million dollar contract, that man sucks!

Top 5 questions from Erock now that we have a legit defense.

1.Which linebacker steps up and takes advantage. With all the middle of the field work the backers will get, based on things outside the numbers being bunched?BLITZES!And look at the backers coming with HEADS ON FIRE and Nmandi’s got there best boy on lock.

2.WILL HE ROCK THE GREEN OR BLACK SLEEVES?

3.If they hold onto Sante and go with there 3 studs where does this put Lindley?

4.This makes the d-lines job how much easier?Much easier. With the way Nmandi gets after the rcvr and DRC’s speacialty being able to cover the short stuff.Qb’s will need too work the check downs.Wash..show them.

5.Top 3…ill say 5th overall…course #1.2.3 in pass defense.Dont forget Nmandi plays the run well. And Babin is a tough guy.

Good point on Rosemans tone and answer Dags.

Asante’s knee was giving him problems at the end of last season…It sounds like he’ll be traded very soon. The Eagles really are going for it all and I think losing out to Haynesworth and the fact New England was stealing thunder with Ocho forced the Eagles to go out and snatch Asomugha. I put pressure on em guys.

How bout the young safeties. Jaiquan Jarret – a headhunter always around the ball run stuffer type (who appareantly is picking off passes in training camp). He’s now got a serious safety net (pun intended) in the passing game. That’s huge. When Allen comes back healthy – whoa…. sick secondary. Coleman will have a better environment to develop. Especially if we’re keeping 22, sick secondary. This basically affords us the opportunity to let the young DEs develop… let some young LBs develop…(I’d still love a top LB signing… but I think we need the money for Vick and Jackson now though….).

Sick

I am right here fellas and haven’t gone anywhere…I am shocked, but elated of the Asmo deal (like 99% of everyone else after the Trade of Kolb getting the CB DCR..) .. I think have 3 quality Pro-Bowl CB’s is fantasitc and unbelievable..
I do think that Samuel could be on his way out though.. Looking around the NFL Teams in the AFC who need a CB (you wouldn’t want to trade him to a NFC Competitor

Bengals — Get a LB R Melauaga or a LB Keith Rivers + and a High Draft Pick in Return…
Jaguars — Get one of their uyoung OT in return (Eben Britton) and a high Draft Pick
Broncos — Get LB DJ Williams and a High Draft pick
Panthers — Get OT Jeff Otah and a Draft Pick..

Put a group of Asante, M Patterson and J Hanson together to a team rebuilding their Defense like the Bengals,Bills,Panthers,Titans,Dolphins

Paulman…………….
Why would a team that is rebuilding give up young promising players for older players like Asante, Hansen and Patterson. Although I would love for that to happen it is not realistic. Asante would be traded to a tema that has a chance to win now, since he has only 3 more years left of productivity due to his age. Remember that I reported last year the middle of the season from an inside source that Asante will not be back this year and I stand by that!

Paul with all his lists and proclamations are tired… he has gotten exposed thru this whole process… But Songs needs to go fly a kite in traffic hes the worst so called eagles fan ever…

I was in PJ Whelihans near cherry hill when all of a sudden at the bottom of the screen read, “nnamdi asomugha has agreed to sign with the eagles” I looked to my right and to my left and asked, “Are you guys seeing what im seeing? Both guys were hammered but still was able to say yea man and began calling there friends to verify, i said this better not be a typo” Then as the rest of the place began seeing what was on the screen the place began to rock!…I havent been this happy in a long time. I just hope there still not done yet.Theyre probably working on other deals. Possibly for tulluch or barnett or others. But the one i dont want to see gone and that is Asante Samuels. Okay i know he isnt that physical but the guy makes plays and you cant deny his production every year, qbs challenge him and yet his ints are always tops in the league… Noone can deny that,

Another thought is that the eagles have so much money under the cap, dont be fooled by reports that there only 20 million under the cap they have a boat load of money and as we can see they have been waiting for this time to strike for along time now… I do want them to get another LB, a DTand a safety and they ll be straight for this year but i dont want it to be at the cost of losing Asante Samuels…

Another thought on top of the other thought i had was and i said this months ago that the eagles needed to build there team similar to the Green Bay Packers who have a dominant DT in the midde then have very good LBs who are fast and smart, but on the back end have very skilled DBs, at least 3 premier Corners. In this league you have to have them, so the eagles seem to have taking a piece of that formula and went balls out…

As roseman referred to, they are comparing themselves to the GB packers who are the SB champs, so know that that loss to the packs really hit this organization hard for they were a td away from advancing and the packers clearly had the more complete team but the eagles most likely reasoned we still almost beat those guys, so every move they have made is in an effort to beat those guys… our team is really taking shape

Another thought on top of the last, what has probably helped the eagles to reason better on the 30 yr age stance is them seeing what charles woodson did to us last yr and the yr he had… hes really been playing great for years… also james harrison being in the sb too with woodson… these guys are well over 30 yet play at high levels and are some of the best in the biz at there positions, the eagles now just want to build a winner and have abandoned the old false reasoning… Great job by roseman and banner n reid they really won the entire FA already and its just getting started…

DDcar..you eat crow…..talking about there wasn’t enough money to get him…I told you!!!!!

The Eagles were forced to go into the coffers because Eagles fans were not impressed at all until it happened. I was stead fast and relentless..During the live casts on the site ..I was there chatting how great New England is for grabbing Haynesworth and Ocho..I also gave mention of Dallas getting Asmo and how the Jets have a real defense….on their site buddy.

And Spuds shut down the chat because others in the began to talk about the big news instead of Babin being signed.

I also made mention of a secondary with no veteran help..Asante only care about Asante….and while he is a ball hawk..he could never possess the leadership skills Dawk brough to the table…The Fans pressed for this and if they would have done nothing while the Phillies made a big splash …it would have been a public relations nightmare for the Eagles brass.

They got it done…Now we have to focus on Vick’s blindside and a serious linbeacker.

My guess is that Assante goes to the Pats for Haynesworth and that it was pre-arranged because Shanny would rather pluck out his eyeballs than trade to the IG’s!
