With Jackson’s Holdout Ended, Just How Much Should They Pay Him

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson is making the right move, not because he’s any less convinced that he deserves a new contract, but because he knows coming to camp is the best way to get one. I agree with him and believe the Eagles will work out a deal with him while he’s in training camp.

The Eagles front office and jackson have probably talked and come to an agreement that they can get something done if he ends his holdout. The key will be how much Jackson thinks he’s worth and how much the Birds think he’s worth.

He’s one of the best big play receivers in the game, but he’s not kind of receiver who’s going to catch 100 passes. Jackson doesn’t have the size and durability to take the pounding which comes with working the middle of the field. The smallish speedster is also a lethal punt returner, who can break a game open if five seconds or so.

In my opinion, Jackson’s numbers don’t tell the whole story. His speed opens up the field for the rest of the Eagles receivers. He scares safeties and makes them backup so that everybody else has more room to work with. How much is that worth?

I think he deserves a huge increase in pay over the half million dollars he’s slated to make this season, but the question is whether he deserves, six, seven, eight or nine million dollars a year.

I believe a deal will get done.

Jackson let it be known last night that he was going to report to training camp. I know he could barely contain himself when he saw the Eagles trade for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and sign fellow former California Bear Nmandi Asomugha, as well as defensive end Jason Babin, and defensive tackle/end Cullen Jenkins.

The diminutive Jackson wants his money but he also wants to get in position for this ride. He has been tweeting up a storm as if he can barely contain himself. He knows the Eagles have improved their football team, which puts them in position for a legitimate run at a Super Bowl title.

12:40 – Update: DeSean Jackson and the Eagles are talking, but Jackson hasn’t agreed to report to camp. He could come in tomorrow or Wednesday but it’s not a definite situation.

Howard Eskin of WIP and NBC 10 reported last night that Jackson will end his holdout this week.

Word is he changed his mind again and isnt reporting until he gets a new deal, Also heard the Texans want Samual really bad, I know they have some very good linebackers on that team, I would do a straight up deal for either Cushings or Ryans in a heartbeat.

He is worth 8 mil a year with incentives to push it higher. My guage for this would be fitzgeralds 11 million a year. I dont think jackson is as good as fitz but i do believe he is a top FIVE receiver in this league. Every one can knock this kids size but (not to beat a cliche) you cant measure the kids heart. His speed route running and hands are tremendous.

Jackson is a great, spirited, exciting player who has never dissed the fans or the Eagles, only given them his heart and soul. However, he has already had two concussions. That is what the Eagles will be looking at and what will hurt Jackson’s ability to get superstar dollars.

Trade him while he has value. Hes skinny and very inkury prone.

Talk to San Diego about Vincent Jackson and explore some other deals.

I would pay him 5-8 million for maybe 2-3 years tops.

Give him a four year deal. 6.5 this year, 7.5 next year, 8.5 the year after that, 10 after that. Thats a 4 year 32 million dollar deal with lets say 10 mil guarunteed. If he doesn’t accept that, he’s a POS.

Jackson has won games for this franchise! Since football is a business, lets be honest, he’s helped make more money for this franchise than his salary is worth….Pay up!!! He may not catch 100 passes a season, but how many WR’s that are catching passes are running Punt Returns back for game winning plays, or even taking it to the house on a reverse…? Pay up!

DJax took his stand, and did it in a manner that didn’t turn things into a circus like some other Eagle’s WR’s from the past. He let the team know last year that he wanted a new deal, but didn’t become a malcontent or distraction, he has been a good team player and leader.

That being said, while he has unique and exciting skills on the field, as was seen last year, he is also only one good hit from anther head injury and missing alot of time or ending his career. He changes the game when he is on the field, and opens up things for others even without touching the ball.

The team is in a tough position. The player is certainly due an increase, but how much and for how long?

Hopefully they can reach an agreement that works best for both sides, and we can see DJax making plays for the Birds this season.

Realtalk — lets spit some real talk. Yes, Desean returned that punt and won the game, but who did all the work before that? Vick and Maclin. Desean dissappears too much. He needs to become more consistent to get the Larry Fitz money. He deserves to get paid, but lets not go overboard.

Don’t be blinded by the flash and the highlight reel and lets look at the real consistency of his work…..something he needs to improve on.

– Why did Desean dissapear, did the Giants defense double team him? Did his presence on the field alone spread the field for Vick and Maclin…

Like G said in the article:

Also who said I was going overboard? Did I say pay him 20mil a season??? No in fact I gave no figure, I am in agreement with most of you with the 8mil figure…so get off my nuts, and come at me about some real BS!!

Some people need to lay off the caffeine in the morning.

I wasn’t coming at you, I simply said lets have some real talk. I didn’t see Desean opening up the field for Maclin and Kolb against Atlanta.

I think the whole Desean opens up the field is a BS argument. ANY speed guy can open up the field. I repeat, ANY speed guy can open up the field…..even Todd Pinkston opened up the field because of his speed. Fact of the matter is, Vick is the most important player on the team and Maclin is the most important receiver — just ask Vick, he targeted him almost twice as much as he targeted Desean.

And to go back to that Giants game, Desean was non-existent in that game until the punt return, he also fumbled in that game which contributed to us being down.by such a large margin.

Point is, like I said, Desean deserves more money….just not Larry Fitz money like he wants.

@Birdo – my apologizes….on this site you never know who’s coming at you…you are right any speed guy can open up the field, but lets not down play Desean abilities to the rest of the guys with similar speed…Desean makes big plays more often…Pro Bowler, 2 seasons – how long has he been in the league? I digress…

I def agree with you that Vick is the most important player on the team…I will say Maclin is a very important receiver, the most, I dont know about all that…But lets remember this also, Maclin is dealing with an illness, what if he doesn’t play to start the season, who do we have then?
You are correct DJAX and Maclin both fumbled in that game…DJAX fumble should have been challenged by Reid also,,dont forget that…..

Oh god here we go again with the MEDIA!!!! The eagles are building a dream team. They are the ones who are saying this all over the place all because Vy said he felt like thats what was going on. Now the media will take that and spin it into what they want. Now were the favorites and all this balogny. Just like with lebron james as one of my articles previously stated. “king james, the chosen one” The media came up with all these names and then they are the same ones killing the guy for having the nicknames and not winning lol hahaha. Funny how it works. Leave the eagles alone, they made great moves to improve there team this off season. But what makes football the greatest sport is that there are so many things that have to go your way to win a superbowl. Its not just about the players and the talent (as we saw with the cowboys for years). Thats why im happy after listening to the players conferences and they all talk about have to jell and having each others backs.

I don’t think you can look at Ftiz deal from a couple of years ago
Just look at the 2 Deals for the Top 2 WR Free-Agents in Santonio Holmes nad Sydeny Rice

Holmes got a 5 Year $50 Million Deal (With $22-24 in Guaranteed $$)
Rice got a 5 Year Deal at $44 Million (With $18 in Guaranteed $$)

I would think D-Jax is as valuable as these 2 players (actually, I think Holmes was overpaid)
I think a fair Contract extension would be 5 Year $40 Million Deal with about -$12-15 MIllion in Guaranteed $$$ which would give him about a $5-$6 Million Annual Salary with his Bonus/Guaranteed/Roster Bonus $$$ maybe spread out ut over the first few seasons..

I blame Rosenhaus for holding him out of camp–he’s done enough deals with the Birds to know you don’t try to hold a gun to their heads. He should have told Jackson to report to camp and they’d work on getting him a new deal. The Eagles won’t negotiate with a player that holds out of camp–this isn’t the mid-to-late 80s when Mike Quick held out nearly every year and the FO gave in. He only makes 565K this year, and they can fine him 30K a day for every day he misses–so far, he’s down 150K.

Wassup G! Man its been so long since last season that I’ve been on here. I was actually just blogging over at Bleedinggreennation.com and those are some of the fakest, abnoxious, fair weather Eagle fans I’ve ever seen. I go in there and state my opinions and they call me names and put me down, many even get racial (Yes, I’m black). This site is much more respectable and also a better source of information when it comes to Philly sports! Gcobb.com is definitely where its at!

To get to my point, Desean Jackson should get as much as he wants. As far as I’m concerned, they should’ve paid him and Mike Vick first before acquiring additions! And yes, I’m grateful and blessed for our additions, but you gotta take care of home first. I like how Mike Vick is leading by example by being in camp and still performing at a high level, even though he wants an extension. I also feel for Desean, he has definitely outperformed his wack contract! But he should be following Vick’s lead. Sad to say though, this is all Drew Rosenhause! Smh. But I think if Desean wants 60 million, give him 60 million! After all, he is better than Santonio Holmes! Desean gives you receptions and returns kicks, meaning we get touchdowns in more ways than one. So he should be paid in that manner, he deserves it. I know Desean personally and he loves it here! He wants to be an Eagle and become the best QB-WR tandem in the league with Mike Vick! Gotta pay the man!

Side note, congratulations to the big homie King Dunlap for his starting, due to Winston’s injury. He is a personal friend of my little Brother and I. I hate when people put him down and say he’s not good. Well check this….Just like you say Kevin Kolb never got much playtime or you haven’t seen enough of him, the same should apply to King Dunlap. Make us proud big homie!

New coaches tough on players LOL…heard T Cole was even getting tongue lashed…lol

Check out the below article – Daily Journal

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Don’t be surprised if the name on the back of Jason Peters’ jersey is changed today to: #$&%*@$#

And don’t be shocked if the back of Trevor Laws’ jersey today reads a four-letter word that would land most school kids in the principal’s office.

The Eagles’ offensive and defensive linemen discovered Sunday that their new positions coaches — Howard Mudd and Jim Washburn aren’t afraid to sling the venom.

For once, the harshest insults and barbs at training camp aren’t coming from bleachers.

“I haven’t been yelled at so much since [former defensive line coach] Tommy Brasher, my rookie year,” Pro Bowl defensive end Trent Cole said.

Washburn, with his backwoods Southern twang, conjures images of the unyielding drill sergeant popularized by the move Full Metal Jacket. It’s a stark contrast to former defensive line coach Rory Segrest, who was fired after last season.

Few — if any of Washburn’s new protégés escaped a tongue-lashing during the morning session in pads.

It’s all motivation,” Cole said. “Everybody knows what it means. If you don’t want to get yelled at, do it right the first time. That’s how his style of coaching is. He’s trying to get everything out of you.”

In Washburn’s case, the language fits the look and the insults flow naturally. With Mudd, who has a more professorial demeanor off the field, there’s a quick switch from placid to pandemonium. He’s like a dormant volcano that just suddenly erupts.

“Some people can’t take coaching like that,” said Peters, who initially deflected questions about Mudd’s scoldings.

Former offensive line coach Juan Castillo, now the defensive coordinator, never minced words during his long stint on the offensive side, but Castillo rarely dressed down his players in public.

“Howard doesn’t hide it when he yells at us,” left guard Todd Herremans said. “Juan would wait till the media was out of there.”

King Cullen
Defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins, the Eagles’ newest toy for coordinator Juan Castillo, said he was surprised more teams didn’t dial him up when free agency started this week.

Jenkins, who had seven sacks last season for the Super Bowl champion Packers, said he’d use that slight as motivation.

“I didn’t quite get as much looks as you would have though of,” said Jenkins, who has 29 career sacks. “It’s a good thing to some extent because I feel very motivated right now because of that.”

Waiting on Watkins
As most reports suggest, the barrier in first-round pick Danny Watkins’ contract hold-up is the fourth year of the four-year deal.

The Eagles aren’t ready to guarantee that year’s salary, which is the desire of Watkins’ camp.

Mike McGlynn continued to take snaps on the first offense and the team signed veteran guard Evan Mathis off the free-agent scrap heap to fortify the position in case Watkins’ contract hurdle keeps going.

Mathis, a seven-year veteran, has started 22 of his 58 career games with the Bengals, Dolphins and Panthers. He was a third-round pick out of Alabama in 2005.

DISRESPECTFUL….

I also feel that Desean was a bit disrespected by our Eagles. #1, they put Kevin Kolb in a position to be bettered financially before Desean Jackson. They blessed an unproven player in Kevin Kolb before someone who has proved himself since he entered the league and is a Superstar (Desean Jackson). I would be mad too!!! But i’d still come to camp. I would be in camp ballin my ass off, doggin Nnamdi, DRC, and Asante to the point where it almost slaps the front office in the face like, “You got no choice but to pay me now!”

I truly believe that if they can get DJax resigned and happy within the next few weeks, that even he will agree that the wait was worth it – especially if it meant being able to get all those other guys.

Schiller, thanks man, glad to be back! You’ve got a point though. The wait would be well worth it. Plus Vick said he was putting his contract negotiations on hold until the team has all they need. Then he said he will put it God’s hands and play until that happens. That’s how Desean should look at it. **** Drew Rosenhaus! That man is the worst! He’s trying to destroy the mind of Desean Jackson who is only 24 and trying to make him Terrell Owens. Ugh!

August 1, 2011 11:38 am

Diz – Amen re: Drew ^sswipe. And I agree it would be great if Djax had the same mentality as Vick – BUT – two completely different situations. Djax is in his rookie contract. Vick was franchised and he signed the tender – that means that if they do nothing for Vick’s contract (fat chance!), he’d make 16 mill + this year! Vick is actually due to make less in salary (signing bonus would sweeten it) if they restructure him and there’s a deadline sometime in September for that….

Can’t really compare the two…

The Eagles have always locked up young talent that they drafted before they become too expensive.

There is something fishy about their lack of concern to get this kid signed.

Not just this year, but they could have given him a bonus or something a long time ago.

Their actions indicate that they don’t value him as much as maybe some of the fans do.

The Eagles have opened up the bank on these free agents so they have money to give him if they wanted to. The question is, why don’t they want to?

Could it be that he’s the size of a High School player?
Could it be that he can’t take a hit?
Could it be that he got alligator arms down at the goal line last year?
Or could it be that he looks for a place to fall even with open field?

Vick and McNabb maybe number one and two in the league for throwing the long ball.

Desean is a talent, but he is not an elite WR.

How many one handed catches or balls has he snagged out of the air?

He is great at what he does. But he is limited.

Fitgerald, steve smith, randy moss, all of GB wrs, and that kid that torched the Eagles for a couple of hundred yards last year. They are all more consistant.

Trick pony guy is O.K. for the regular season, but we can’t have a disappearing act in the playoffs. Andy Reid playcalling is bad enough but once the playoffs start the dumb coaches are gone and his goofy play calling does not match up with the supeior coaches. So games like the Redskins game don’t happen. Smart coaches know how to rough up the pee wee WR and take him out of the game.

We all agree that DeSean Jackson deserves a raise. The Eagles have been willing in the past to give those raises to explosive players like Westbrook and a proven player like McNabb. Jackson is both proven and explosive but the Eagles don’t seem to care.

He might get a raise or the Eagles may shock the world and trade him.

Howie said he was not done yet. Don’t be surprised.

Ever since that blind sided hit against the Falcons, people keep saying Desean can’t take a hit…why? He’s never really missed a significant amount of time. Calvin Johnson’s actually missed more than Desean! So have many other big name recievers such as Andre Johnson and T.O. etc. The hit that Desean took would’ve knocked out probably any reciever especially if it was late and blindsided like Desean’s. That guy is the toughest little guy in the NFL, maybe the toughest period. Many of you all put Desean down rather than cheer for him and talk about his positives. Knock off all the negative talk! Some people kill me with the “Come to camp and prove it” attitudes…DeSean Jackson doesn’t have to prove anything at this point, some journalists say he’s “Top 10”, but in fact he’s the most lethal WR in the league when it comes to scoring. There are a lot of receivers that put up yardage numbers, but I haven’t seen any of the other top receivers blow by a secondary with perfect coverage and leave 20 or 30 yards between themselves and the closest defender. I’m not talking about busted coverage situations or clearly slow footed DBacks either. They need to just pay the kid for what he’s already contributed.

Dizzy,
Vick’s already been paid–he signed his franchise tag giving him 16M–however, it was in the papers the first day of camp the Eagles were already negotitating with him on a long term deal; Jackson should get, as someone else said, the same as Holmes–in fact, Joe Banner has even said that as soon as he gets into camp, they’ll start negotiating a deal with his agent. Holding out when you already have a contract sends the wrong message to younger players–“I have a contract, but I want an extension, and the heck with the team…” He hasn’t started doing situps in the driveway yet, but he still shouldn’t have held out.
