Michael Vick Signs Six-Year Deal With $40 Million Guaranteed

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has signed a six-year $100 million dollar contract with the Birds and $40 million dollars of the deal is guaranteed. I think that news means more to DeSean Jackson than Vick. Seriously Vick has to be very happy about getting this behind him, now he can be totally focused on getting the Lombardi Trophy.

“I’m very happy we were able to reach an agreement with Michael on this long-term contract,” said head coach Andy Reid. “It’s a product of all the hard work Michael has done to better himself over the last couple of years, both on and off the field. I’m very proud that he has been able to achieve success again in this league, but he’ll be the first one to tell you that there is a lot of work yet to be done by him and this team as a whole. And there’s no doubt in my mind that he will continue on that path. I give a lot of credit to Joe Banner and Joel Segal for getting this deal done.”

Vick did earn this deal by the way he came here and worked his butt off to take his game to another level. Now he’s got to make this deal a good investment for the Birds by leading them to a championship. They’ve got all the pieces in place for championship run. Vick has got to bring it home.

He was named the 2010 Comeback Player of the Year by the Associated Press, Sporting News, and Pro Football Weekly after registering career highs in QB rating (100.2), completion percentage (62.6) and passing yards (3,018) en route to his fourth career Pro Bowl berth. He became just the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for 3,000+ yards, rush for 500+ yards (676), and accrue a 100+ QB rating in a season, joining Hall of Fame QB Steve Young, who did so in 1992 for the San Francisco 49ers.

In addition, Vick set the Eagles single-season record among quarterbacks with nine rushing touchdowns while ranking second in team history in completion percentage, QB rating and INT percentage (1.6). For his efforts, Vick was named the recipient of the Bert Bell NFL Player of the Year award from the Maxwell Football Club and garnered NFC Offensive Player of the Year accolades from the Kansas City 101 Awards.

A multi-dimensional threat from the quarterback position, Vick’s 11 career 100-yard rushing games are the most by a QB in NFL history and his 4,630 career rushing yards ranks second behind Randall Cunningham (4,928). His 1,039 yards in 2006 were the most ever by a QB in a single season. In addition, he holds four of the top five single-game rushing totals by a QB since 1970, including a career-high 173 yards at Min. (12/1/02).

A former first overall pick of the NFL draft in 2001 by the Atlanta Falcons, Vick starred collegiately at Virginia Tech where he led the Hokies to a 20-1 record over two seasons and carried the school to the National Championship in his first year as a starter in 1999.

Congratulations to Mike Vick and to the EAgles for getting this Deal done..
It’s a lot of money, but Vick has proven himeself to be dedicated, loyal and a true leader and is one of the top Players and QB’s in the NFL and should be paid as such… I guessthe underlining story is that people can change, can improve and in many cases, it’s getting that opportunity to get yourself back on your feet again.. The Eagles took a chance, really stepped outside their normal comfort zone when the signed Vick a couple years back and caught a lot flak for doing so when the did (and yes from me too..) but everyeon deserves a chance or 2 to redeem themselves and now the Eagles and VIck have been rewarded with one of the Top QB’s in the NFL locked up to play for the Eagles for the next 6 Years and Vick is also fortunate to have landed on a very stable franchise and to work with Coaches and teammates that gave a hoot on how he was doing as a person first and then as a play .. I raise my glass to toast Michael Vick, Coach AR and the entire Eagles Staff and Front office as well as Vick’s Management/Business partners… This is a great day in Eagle Nation…

Thanx PW…any Idea how much under th eCAp (if at all) they are.. .
Eagles need to clear some $$$ for D-Jax…
I see J Jackson, J Parker, M Jackson, J Hansen,Buckley, all not making the FInal Roster which should free up about $7-$9 Million .. If they don’t extend D-Jax, it’s gonig to be a festering issue all Season so either do it now (after the final Cuts) or plan to move without him but D-Jax won’t be sitting idly for too much longer..

I believe the Eagles have completely shifted their cap philosophy.

It seems the Birds are willing to spend on “key skill positions,” while filling other holes with draft picks (because of the changes to rookie contracts).

I always understood, though I disagreed with, their reasons for trading out of the first round so many times. They didn’t want to relegate huge signing bonuses and large contracts to unproven rookies. Now, that they can sign high-round draft picks to reasonable contracts, they are investing in proven skill players through free-agency. Unfortunately, they’ve designated the offensive line as a “gap” that can be filled with rookies. Their gamble is that they’ve accurately evaluated the talent and are able to teach these guys quickly. Hopefully, they’re right, because our season hinges on it.

They’re willing to risk the health of their franchise QB by using rookies, but they were unwilling to risk a financial loss in rookie contracts. If Vick goes down, that’s at least $40 million lost. I’m not sure I see the difference.

Congrats to Vick! When he came here, I wasn’t sold on him. And I’m still unsure that he can take us there, though the possibility certainly exists. While he’s certainly matured as a player, he seems to have matured even more as a person, which will serve him well.

@Paulman b4 this deal the Eagles were about $1 mil under the cap, they’re right around $3.5 mil under cap now, and can use that tag on someone else.

Drummer, I respectfully disagree with your analysis. This was a unique year in the NFL – can you disagree with that? This was them taking advantage of an opportunity, not shifting their philosophy/policy.

And really, “it seems the Birds are willing to spend on “key skill positions,” while filling other holes with draft picks” – um, that’s always been the case. They have always spent big on OL, DE, CB and QB. See Runyan, Peters, Andrews, Kerse, Howard, McNABB!!!!

eaglesinoak – they cannot use any tags until next year. When you use a tag on a guy, and then renegotiate with him in one offseason – that was you using your tag. It’s not renewable.

I also don’t think you can franchise a guy who is under contract. You can’t franchise Desean until next offseason starts.

eaglesinoak – one more thing, uh, franchising Jackson would mean paying him way more than 3.5 mill this year. That then, would put them OVER the cap.

If anybody (Paulman) thinks the eagles will cut Jackson and leave us with only a rookie center, they are truly clueless.

To Dixue,
Eagles would have McGlynn who started 15 games at Center last Season as the Back-up.. Jacksons has played in 2 1/2 games in 20 months.. They wil lnot keep him as an aging back-up player at his Salary level..
2 Things about Franchise Tage
#1) D-Jax is already under Contract and Franchise Tag applies to only Free-Agent
#2) Since the Eagles had declared Vick with their Franchise Tag and now have a settled a contract with him. They will not get another Franchise Tag until next Off-Season..

The only way I see the Eagles being able to extend D-Jax this Season with a bigger contract is to now shed some payroll so older veteran players (who are not starters seem to be the likley ones to go.. (J Jackson,J Parker,J Hansen for sure) Release Injured players once they are medically cleared like M Jackson, V Abiamri and then maybe a couple of surprise cuts like a .. T Laws, W Justice, and maybe even a Donald Leewill have to be on the table.. Now if the Eagles have no intention on extending D-Jax deal this year, then some of the cuts would likely not have to happen..

Think out of the box with a couple of Wildcard players who could see a Trade

#1) WR – J Avant – with S Smith getting closer and closer to being ready to go, he could become that #3 WR in the Slot and would creat a whole lot more mis-matches out on the field along with D-Jax & Maclin than Avant ever would .(then you would have Cooper as the 4th/Red-Zone Target WR and could allow that 5th WR (Hall/Moss/Higgins) also return Kicks/Punts

#2) TE Brett Celek could be traded and utilize Harbor and Lee as the main TE’s, Harbor as your pass-receiver and Lee as your BLocking/Short-YArdage/Red-ZOne TE and maybe this even allows for a C Ingram even make the squad

both hypotheticals of course as both players are popular with Teammates and the Coaching stff so very unlikley of ever occuring.. but if the Eagles had to free some Cap Space, this would allow some options from positions of strength and to maybe acquire a Top LB..

Celek/Avant to the Bears for LB L Briggs and a Draft Pick .. I would do in a heartbeat…. Eagles then would have Briggs and FOkou as OLB and slide Chaney back to the Middle which would be a major upgrade..

Also VY and his $3.5 Million Salary.. If he can’t beat out 2nd Year Kafka, to be the #2 behind VIck, Do the Eagles need to even keep him around??.. I bet the Seahawks/49ers would love to have a VY right now the way thier QB’s have played this Pre-Season.. … Howie has to think of these things all the time..

Reuben Frank, is the biggest Eagle butt kisser, & clueless person that there is! He is worst than Spadaro & Eskin! He is wrong on everything & acts like he knows everything! I don’t trust or respect anything that clown has to say! Jackson ain’t getting signed before the end of the year. If he is, i’ll eat crow on here! It won’t be the first time!
IMHO, it will be a hug mistake, if they sign him more than 3-4 years, $7.5-$8.5 per. Just saying.

Paulman, don’t forget that any vet the Eagles trade or cut, any proration for dead money will be moved into next year, not this year–however, they don’t owe millions to anyone whom might fall into this category–we’ll look at some obvious candidates; I’ll list how much the Eagles save this year and what their proration is–
Parker–3.5M (800K)
Teo Neshaim–450K (185K)
Hanson–1.8M (455K)
Avant–1.25M (710K)
That’s about 7M they’d save–if they realized your trade of Avant and they’d probably be hit next year with just under 3M in dead money.

Schiller the Eagles have not always filled holes with draft picks. For years, Reid wouldn’t play rookies at all — that is, until the Giants won the Superbowl with 7 rookies. What they had done was recruit free-agents with a history of injury, at bargain basement prices.

drummer – fair enough, but there were changes at GM too am I wrong? That could be a big part of the philosophy shift too. Its easy to lump everything into Reid’s basket.
