LeSean McCoy Was The Difference-Maker On Sunday Night

“I’m still getting better, I’m a work in progress,” LeSean McCoy said following last Sunday’s 100-yard day against the Washington Redskins. It was scary to think that the NFL’s 5th leading rusher, 2nd leading scorer, and the man with the most converted first downs could get any better.

On Sunday night, on a national stage, McCoy proved to the football world that he’s an elite back by torching the Cowboy’s number one-ranked run defense.

“Right now, he’s playing as well as any running back there is”, Andy Reid said about McCoy. “That is a compliment to him and the guys blocking around him. The receivers had a couple of nice downfield blocks as well, so it was kind of a joint effort. LeSean is tough to bring down one-on-one. He has tremendous quickness and lateral mobility.”

The former Pitt Panther got off to an early start by running for 95 yards in the first half, 25 more than the average that the Cowboys allowed the entire game.

“We’re going to keep running the ball,” Reid said early in the week, and without the Cowboys showing any signs of stopping it, the Eagles did just that.

McCoy went on to finish the game with a career-high 185 yards on, another career-high, 30 carries. For the second straight game, and the third game in five weeks, McCoy has set a career high in touches. Against the Redskins, McCoy’s 28 carries and 30 touches was a career best. In week three, against the Giants, McCoy carried the ball 24 times and caught the ball three times and averaged 5.2 yards per touch.

Perhaps the more surprising fact is that, for the second straight week, McCoy was able to pick up first downs at the end of the game to run the clock. When everyone in the stadium knew the Eagles were going to give the ball to McCoy, he still managed to pick up 21 yards on 6 carries to keep the clock moving.

“He’s able to create space and make guys miss and it definitely makes our job as an offense easier”, Michael Vick told reporters following the game.

After the game, Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Rob Ryan took all the blame upon himself. After his preseason comments calling the Eagles the “all-hype” team and saying that the Cowboys’ are going to “beat their a**es anyway,” Ryan and his “three bullies” were bullied up and down the field the entire night.

McCoy’s career game helped give the Eagles one of the best advantages a team can have in a game. The time of possession battle. After getting out to an early lead, the Eagles were able to establish the run and run the clock. With 42 minutes and 9 seconds of possession, the Eagles were able to control the ball for 70 percent of the game.

“We get on our blocks pretty quick and aggressive and he just makes his cuts off of us”, left tackle Jason Peters said after the game. “He was just running all over the place tonight.”

The Eagles running back makes the most drastic cuts of anybody in the league. He makes tacklers look foolish because he’s able to cut so drastically that it seems in possible. The fact that he’s able to do it at full speed makes very good athletes look like they don’t belong in the NFL. Check out the picture of Terrence Newman, who was coming free on a blitz and didn’t even get a hand on McCoy as he went by him.

With McCoy’s running killing the clock, the Cowboys were forced into a one-dimensional offense. That offense was one that played to the Eagles strengths, the passing game. With the Eagles utilizing Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel in man coverage, Tony Romo had another bad day and continued his pattern against the Eagles. Whether it be good or bad, Romo, against the Eagles, has had at least one interception in every regular season game he’s played.

With Romo taking the reigns, DeMarco Murray was held to just eight carries. On those eight carries, Murray averaged 9.25 yards per carry. After his 253-yard game last week, the Eagles were determined to shut him down and the 24-0 halftime lead allowed them to do just that.

With two rushing touchdowns, McCoy has moved to 2nd in the league in rushing and total touchdowns, 8 and 10, respectively. He is also the only player in the league to score a touchdown in every game through week 7. With a career-high 12 first downs, McCoy now leads the league in first downs.

The next closest are New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham, Detriot Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, and Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who are all at least 8 first downs behind Shady. Perhaps the most impressive stat is that McCoy has yet to fumble the ball this season despite having the fifth most rushing attempts in the league.

Clearly, McCoy was the difference maker in the Eagles 34-7 victory over the Cowboys on Sunday night. LeSean is putting together an MVP-type season and is establishing himself as one of the true elite back in the NFL.

See, it’s qoutes like the one Andy made today which gives me hesitation with believing in this team.

Andy was asked what have he changed in the last 2 games and his response?

“I didn’t change anything.”

WHAT?

How about mentioning the run balance in the last 2 games which is against your normal philosophy?

How about mentioning the advantages of tightening the wide 9 during run downs?

How about mentioning the quick drops getting the ball out on intermediate routes instead of depending on the bomb?

How about mentioning what was changed in the instant replay department since Andy have never won 2 challenges in one game?

Please don’t tell me that Andy Blelieves nothing have changed because he’ll go back to throwing 75 % of the time and claimed nothing changed.

Songs, I’m going to tell you something that you should know by now because its common sense, and I’ve told you a million times over. ANDY REID IS A FOOTBALL COACH WHICH MEANS THAT HE SAYS THINGS TO THE MEDIA BY THE BOOK OF COACHSPEAK – translation “TELL THEM NOTHING OF SIGNIFICANCE – EVER”. Why do you care what he says.

If I told you “I am only going to speak jibberish and reveal nothing at all that is truthfull” – and you keep listening to me – you’re a moron.

WHY do you insist on searching for meaning from a person who’s entire goal is to reveal 0 meaning?

You’re going to the wrong place for what you want. Do you go to pats and ginos for health food? Do you go to Whole Foods for cheesteaks? Do you go to a corner drug dealer for yoga classes and a yoga instructer for crack?

Songs, why is it so important for you to hear Reid say what you want him to say? You saw what happened on the field, why do you need to hear Reid say it? I swear, sometimes I think you go take a walk for the games, and then DVR or get all hyped up for the press conferences.

Reid giving a press conference entails a guy doing something he doesn’t want to do, but has to. Just going through the motions, getting it over with. If you were dating a girl who was forced to date you, had no interest in you whatsoever, would you still spend money, energy, and time with her?

silky – your tired lame ‘I know football’ act has played out – your hope (for the worst so Andy gets fired) and change act – stale and as old as the opening on side kick getting returned in 2003…

Again – why are you worried about what Reid sez in a press confenrence – that hesitation you are feeling is proabably an enlarged prostate or serious constipation – cause man you always seem to have something stuck up your butt…

give it a rest.. I don’t even think Reid is calling the plays this year – as for winning the challenge – its quotes like this that give me hesitation with believing in the team – I am sorry songs – paid cowboy schill, everything you have preached (isn’t it jakedog that tells you to preach) this year was blwon out of the water this weekend – oline coach to D Coord – check, watkins – check – jackson vice kelce – check, Short yardage – check – pass to run – check – Challenge flag – check – moving 24 around like the pack did with woodson vice only leaving him in press all the time – check –

how about mentioning what was changed in the instant replay department – well Mr Songs – we went out and hired 8 paid cameraman to have two cameras on every end line and sideline to give us three dimensianal views of the enitre field then we secretly implanted all the footballs with microchips that provide exact GPS coordinates down to the 1/1000000 of a micro inch and hired 6 people to instantly review each play – and then inserted a buzzer that tickled my ;left testicle when I should NOT review the play – that’s why I let Marty call all the plays – me left testicle was getting tickled all game – I was really disappointed those two times it didn’t tickle me so I threw the flag – than god I was right –

or – the refs calls were so freakin bad he was actaully mouthing the words go ahead and challenge (shot gun formation wide rcvr screen – forward about 5 yards…… maybe….) so I just dropped it –

No better yet – Harold Carmichael came up and said no cheeseburgers – better yet – dollar menu cheesburgers – al lyou can eat if you do throw the challenege flag – all those burgers – I had to –

dude – you have been right on NOTHING. But please – please keep making those predictions – the worse you prdict they will do the better the team does – can we get your early Bears – Eagles line?

McCoy had a great game but the real stars of the game was the Offensive Line in my opinion and in particular LT Jason Peters.. When he crashes down on the DE to the right side, there is a huge hole that Paulman could run for 8-10 yards.. around the left side… There were some gashing holes by all the O/L and the Cowboys were supposed to be the #1 Team in Rushing Defense.. It didn’t seem like they came to play at all (except for D Ware) and when MLB S Lee went out, it was great to see the Eagles exploit the old, aging replacement LB K Brooking who should have retired after last
season.. One last thing, Did All-World Jay Ratliff even make a tackle or play last evening.. Center Kelce and Guards Watkins and Mathis took care of him pretty damn good, don’t you think… I think this OL of the Eagles is really starting to jell and could be one of the best OL in the NFL and I am not kidding, look around the NFL, just about every team has issues along their OL and the Eagles group is getting better and better and more confident as they play together… This OL could potentially have 3 Pro-Bowlers in LT Peters, RT Herremans and Center Kelce..

October 31, 2011 10:43 pm

No – No – no Pman – clearly you did not read the post of Mr Nuance – Drummer Winslow – who – I guess with all the highlights on the web these days – called Kelce a and I quote a ‘Turnstyle’ perhaps there are some new fangled turnstyles in Philly these days that take all pro nose guards a drive them off the line of scrimmage – after all we have many on this site that make up new meanings to words – perhaps when one eagle fan says Kelce is a potential pro bowler and another calls him a turnstyle – they really mean the same things? Maybe its in the nuance? Ratliff made one tackle – one – there was no penetration – no push in the center of the line – for the last two games, any pressure has come around the tackles – probably the reason the eagles are using that two TE set where the TEs line up outside the tackles and block first then release –

But hell yeah – that O Line is looking very, very solid – how about that 1st rounder Watkins – again – no pressure up the middle – lots of time to pass.. very good showing for the O Line –

I watched the game again and focused soley on the OL and came away very impressed.. All 5 of them working in unison I thought did a hell of a job and yes quietly both Kelce and Watkins are forming quite a nice duo for the interior..
I aslo thought that both Celek and especially Harbor had real strong games too in run blocking on those lead blocks, where they pull the guard who then can g oout and nip off a LB.. This is why McCoy is averaging 6-7-8 yards last evening.. lot’s of times, he wasn’t even touched until he was 6-7 yards down the field.. and then other times, McCoy just made some fantastic cuts and rand for daylight, shedding would be tacklers off of him and the real funny thing is, that McCoy on at least 6-8 occassion raan or cut right into a tackler for a short gain instead of following the hole and at play call and still ended up with 185 yards.. amazing stuff.. Cowobys Defense looked just liked the like the Eagles did the first few games, unorganized, unsure where to line up, poor communication (Didn’t help with signal caller ILB S Lee hurt) and just plain poor tackling and the inability to shed tacklers (besides Demarcus Ware)

Shady is the best player on this offense. Was at the game and there was nothing like seeing him shake the shit out of Jay Ratliff, Anthony Spencer, and Ware etc…he is just simply amazing and is only 23 years old. Honestly, if i started an NFL team today im really not sure if I would take a RB over Shady right now. The eagles will be a force in the next 4-5 years with this kid.

I said that this team will make the playoffs if they sweep Dallas. Great start to that and i have faith that they will beat them again on xmas…The cowboys do not give us the problems they once did…Ratliff is nowhere compared to what he used to be…their O-line use to kills us because they had so much size over us but that is not the case anymore…and their secondary is lame.

I must say though, people need to start giving Brent Celek some props for what he does…just because he doesn’t catch a ton of balls anymore people like to get on him but fact is this guy has turned into a really good blocker…how many times did he knock Ware out of the lanes one on one for Shady last night…this guy is good and some fans are too stupid to realize it just because he will never catch 70plus balls again.

some philly fans too stupid – naah – come on man –

Pman – it was Mudd that compared Kelce to Saturday – did you notice on the MacLin screen for the touchdown – Kelce drove #35 thru the back of the end zone and was 5 yards into the end zone when Maclin scored – Peters gets a lot of credit for caving in the CBoys DL – but Kelce got Ratlif moving –

No need to get personal with each other. It’s only sports boys & life is too short. Remember that. Sometimes, it gets a bit out of hand on here. People need to get perspective, humbleness & humility on here! When tragedy strikes, it changes your outlook & perspective of things, that are important in life. Just because our opinions differ, don’t make one side more right than the other. I’d like to think that we are all great fans on here. But some are more, realistic, pessimistic, optimistic, blindly loyal, or critical than others. That’s why it is great on here, we get to vent our frustrations, with each other, but the personal attacks, are childish, uncalled for, & unacceptable. Just saying. Have a nice day.

Thank you D-Car well said. With that being said, I admit that sometimes I tend to be very negative when it comes to this team. Honestly, I didn’t think they had a chance to beat Dallas but they proved me wrong by playing 4 solid, impressive quarters of football on both sides. I know its just one game (well 2 if you count Washington) but I have to give this entire team credit for what they did. As for the rest of the season I am going to take it one game at a time and I agree that there are more important things in life that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

We can talk about Andy Reid not winning a SB, but we can look at another point of view and talk about Andy Reid being one of the most successful coaches in the past decade. We can all point out flaws and what ifs all day long, lets deal with the now, and right now the Eagles are looking like most of us expected. Lets just take it one game at a time as the Eagles coach would say.

I’m looking at the Giants schedule and they have a hell of a schedule. We get a win next week fellas and the Giants lose, its a brand new season gentleman!

Reed…I praise Vick and McCoy knowing what we can do if Coach Reid run the ball.

This is nothing surprising to those who have been calling for Andy Reid to run the damn ball.

So, as far as I’m concerned Andy Reid gets no praise until he lives and dies by the philosophy exhibited on Sunday…..Period.

Juan Castillo did a great job this Sunday which is a direct result of having a fresh defense and that’s only possible if Reid Runs the ball and controls the clock.

I also give Juan credit for his 5 lineman alignment with only Chaney in at Linebacker whick masked a poor linebacking corp.

Again…with the great win over Cowboys it can be all for nothing if the Eagles faulter within the next few games.
