Hurricanes Claim Nodl off Waivers

This had to have been one of the easiest decisions for Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford.

His team is sitting in 14th place in the Eastern Conference, having won 3 of their last 10 games.  The team has a brand new NHL coach (literally) in Kirk Muller. Their penalty killing ranks 22nd in the NHL.

If only there were a player available who is not only an excellent penalty killer but has also shown the ability to score goals in the NHL?

Enter Andreas Nodl, placed on waivers by the Flyers yesterday in an attempt to “gauge interest.” Most general managers pick up the phone when trying to gauge interest in a player, with the desired result being something of value in return, but this was the quicker route of making roster space, I suppose.

Nodl had been snakebitten in the 12 games he played this season, only tallying 1 assist. He finished the 2010-11 season with 11 goals and 22 points.

The impact of losing Nodl can be mitigated if Brayden Schenn can replace his penalty killing minutes and if Zac Rinaldo can play defensive hockey on the third line, but both scenarios remain to be seen.

Nodl was practicing with the Flyers this morning before news broke. He was one of six remaining forwards from last year’s team including Danny Briere, Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, James Van Riemsdyk and Jody Shelley.

The Hurricanes play tonight against the Florida Panthers.  No word yet if Nodl will play.

In related news, Sam Carcidi is reporting that the Flyers intend to test the waters with Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon as the 5th and 6th defensemen for the time being.  With Nodl off the roster, the Flyers now have space to bring on an additional contract if needed (whether it be through free agency or trade).

Go get big Bobby Ryan from Ducks who’s been having a rough time filling the stat sheets this season (Homer can work out a trade), then coming back east would reset his game and he’d be playing with a Jersey guy. We can then use Bourdon to fill in ’til Pronger comes back….. daydreamin’ !
