It’s Clear That If Reid Returns, So Will Castillo As Defensive Coordinator

I’m sure that if Andy Reid keeps his job and returns for season number 14 as the Eagles head coach, he will keep Juan Castillo at the defensive coordinator’s position.  Reid made it very clear yesterday that he sees improvement in Castillo’s performances and the performances of the team’s defensive players.

No one can deny the fact that the defense has played well the last couple of weeks, but does that mean keeping Castillo in place is the best way to go.  I think Reid is looking for reasons to keep Castillo on board.  Will he be ready to compete and outmaneuver the top offensive coordinators in the NFL?  Not only do the players have to win their battles, the coaches must win their battles as well if you want to win a championship.

I was just on 94WIP with Angelo Cataldi and the Morning Show, this morning.  Angelo asked me whether I thought Andy Reid would return next year and I said yes.  He also asked me whether I thought Juan Castillo would be back as defensive coordinator.  I had to give him a yes answer to that question as well.

If you have any doubt that I was telling the truth check out what Reid said yesterday at his news conference when asked about the progress of Castillo this year.

“I think from a player’s standpoint, I think you see consistency”, Reid said yesterday. “I think what he told you happens, and he’s aware of it, knowing the players, playing to their strengths, and covering up whatever weaknesses they have. I think the part that he’s been consistent, he’s not afraid to admit a problem and fix the problem. He’s not hiding from anything there. The players, he obviously has the trust of the players and the confidence of the players.”

Reid made it a point to tell everybody that both the players and the coaches are responsible for getting the job done.  “I think it’s a combination”, Reid said. “I don’t think it’s the players, I don’t think it’s the coaches, I think it’s everybody doing a better job, and it’s important to do that. We’ve got a good football team that we’re playing this week, so we’ve got to make sure we continue to work and do the right things and execute and put the players in position to execute.”

Finally Reid started the argument for he and Castillo to return next year.

“Listen, I think everybody’s getting better every week. That’s what I think. That’s where I’m at. You guys all know how I feel about Juan, I don’t think that’s new news. But I think it’s important that we all, starting with me, that we all get better every week and play as a team, and that’s the important thing.”

The desire of Reid to have Castillo return as the defensive coordinator could become an issue which separates the head coach from the rest of the front office and could cause problems and ultimately cause Reid to leave.  It’s something worth keeping an eye on.

im sorry but this CANT HAPPEN. if spags is free, we HAVE to welcome him home. Im not trying to rip on Juan… he seems nice…. but we need a coach at the DC position. Im im Jeff, i dont budge on this. Everything has changed over the last feww years…. players, coaches even the D style of play….. last thing that remains is Andy and his power. I can live with Andy but not his power, although ive wanted him out since his D blew the Championship gama against the Cards years ago.

we need new ideas. We need this team to respond positivly toward the coaches… i feel like they have given up on Juan and perhaps andy.

Everyone needs to remember some important issues concerning the Off-Season and going into the 2012 Season

#1) The entire Coaching Staff is signed thru the 2012 Season while Coach AR is Signed thru 2013)
#2) They will all be Coaching 2012 with their jobs on the line including AR
#3) Knowing this, and if Coach AR fires Castillo, who is he going to able to hire when the entire League knows that 2012 could be AR’s Final Season.
What DC wants to pack-up and move his family for a potentially 1 Year Job.. With Coach AR job on the line in 2012, he does not have the luxury of bringing in another New DC and try to implement with new schemes, formations, etc, etc all the while the DC knowing that he could be out of a job after 1 year of Coaching too.. This is why HC’s hate going into a Season with only 1 year remaining on their Contract fueling the perception of a ‘Lame-Duck” Coach’ which makes it extremely difficult to hire a good Staff..

Bottom line, they are all back for 2012 which will be their final Season (Mudd will most likley retire after 2012 regardless of what happens and maybe Washburn too)
I do think that Secondary Coach Lynne may get terminated and that O/C MM may move on as he will get Opportunites to be HC elsewhere

Good points Stevo. I completely agree. Hopefully the front office is not jaded by two good performances which may end up being too little too late. If the Jets beat the Giants this week and the Eagles blow it against the Cowboys, the mood with this team will change in a heartbeat. It’s easy to welcome all your coaching staff back after a great win against a good Jets team.

unless pman you are looking to move from DC to HC- enter…. Spags…. or.. fisher (unless he gets a HC job now)…. or just about any other coach.

Pman- you also said the phillies would win about 85 games. and that the birds would NOT go all in this year. and that carolina would be good (last year) and that AR had no power anymore-right before he hired juan and on and on.

If the eagles blow this…… Juan is gone. and if he is not…. many fans may be gone. Do you hear that Banner… doing the same thing over and over (spending money on this team) and exppecting different results is insanity!!!!

lets kep in mind my friends that our front 4 on the D is stacked. We are getting sacks- thats something we have never been able to do at this high a level. AND…. Jim Johnson would have killed to have 3 stud CB’s AND get to the qb. we also have ball hawks at the safety position. Now dont get it twisted….. i think Allen and Coleman need help tackling…. but there is NO reason our D should not be better than it is. NONE. If we had Nnamdi on this roster last year we would have been great.

A couple of things to keep in mind

Overall Defensive Stats as far as “Total Yardage” given up has the Eagles Ranked 10th in the NFL
They are # 1 in the NFL with 46 Sacks year to Date
They have only created 19 Turnovers which is tied for 20th in th NFL and not that good with only 12 INT’s which is rather low for the CB’s they have on the Roster..
They have given up an Average of 22 points per Game which Ranks 19th

They have improved as a unit and you can bet your bottom dollar with 2 Solid performances to end the Season, that Castillo will be back and what’s really telling about his lack of Experience coming into the Season that the Eagles have played well Defensively against their NFC East Rivals probably due to a level of familiarity.. But if Eagles finish 8-8 (which would mean 5-1 in th NFC East, you have to feel pretty good about that moving forward for the future.. )

I believe in Reid and Castillo. The reason I say this is I see more players on defense being beat by the man rather than by the scheme. When players are running free and defenders look at each other with that “I thought you had him” look, that’s scheme and coaching. But I think that is the exception as compared to the rule.

Separately, I remember someone saying it takes about a full season to get better at calling a defense. I think this was when McDermott was the DC. You have to give Juan time to fully implement his version and get used to being the DC. Time is the only option here and he’s done enough to warrant a second year (you can’t jerk players around too much or they will lose interest).

December 20, 2011 12:46 pm

In the last two games, the Eagles have allowed just 29 points, 24 first downs and 445 total yards. They’ve registered 13 sacks, forced seven turnovers and allowed their opponents to convert just six of 28 third-down opportunities.

– Stole this from an article in Philly.com about the D being in synch –

I think any talk about ‘Firing’ anybody is premature at this point – if the D can do the next two weeks, what the D did the last two weeks – just my opinion – Reid and Castillo will both be back – thrown in all the ‘I don’t care’ excuses – short off-season new starters, new coaches, new system – the birds beat up on Romo and the Skins – they will be back –

course for me – would love to see them sneak into the playoffs – maybe see a home playoff game against Detroit – we can really see how well this D will do – might be ugly – ut at least going into next season will have honest assessment

Ahmen Eric T – when you start hearing things like ‘too many missed tackles’ like we heard early in the year – that’s a direct indication that scheme wise – soemone was there to make the play – and ooops – they didn’t

I think Castillo will be back unless the last two games the D just gets pummeled –

oh – stand by for incoming on your ‘warrant’ comment –

GCobb I don’t think there is an answer to that question yet in regards to Castillo. Just because the D played really well against the dolphins and jets (who aren’t exactly superior nfl offenses) doesn’t mean you can just forget the defensive debacles throughout the whole season looking even recently against Seattle. That game alone made it embarrassing to be an eagles fan the way this D and coaching staff showed up. If the Cowboys light up this defense then what? The past 2 impressive wins won’t mean a damn thing and we will be eliminated from playoffs.

I think if we don’t make the playoffs there is no way they bring him back as DC…(bring in Spags and leave Castillo on staff)…if they make the playoffs somehow, someway then I think they will bring him back without question.

Personally, I don’t want this guy coaching the eagles defense. I don’t think he is anywhere good enough as of right now. To me, just showing up in half the games in a season (which it will take to make playoffs) isn’t success to me. You don’t praise someone that shows up halfway in their job, someone who fails just as much or even more than they do as prevail. How is that good enough? Standards must be really low for some people. Didn’t we set a record this year for giving up leads in the 4th or something like that? Come on this should even be a question. ON top of that, has Castillo even scouted defensive players for a draft before since we obviously need someone new here before the draft happens since Reid has shown he is not capable of hitting on anybody on that side of the ball recently, without JJ by his side?

Im going to enjoy this past win and look forward to beating the Cowboys. Even if we are eliminated before the game even happens, nothing would make my Christmas more than beating that crap out of that team and Romo and ruining Jerry Botox Jones holiday. Being able to cause the Cowboys to miss the playoffs would atleast be something positive about this season if we don’t go.

they beat the dolphins and the jets.

im not a hater at all but i have to think…. to hope…. that the pats game stuck in Jeff’s grill. my friends, would this D be redy to stop a power running or a high octain passing playoff team? I know he has learned but lets not forget about leaving a young FS on Fitz.

I also refuse to believe anything Reid says in any press conference he does. Again if the Cowboys just blow us up on defense then what? what will the last 2 games really mean then?

I think its pretty obvious that if Reid doesn’t win a superbowl next year he is gone. If he wants to directly tie Castillo to that then so be it. He will have to live with it.

Um Stevo – I thought the Jets had a power running game??

Didn’t Miami just ring up 30 on Buffalo – And didn’t Reggie Bush run for about 200 yards in that game – sorry man – same old cliches – very little fact checking –

How about – ‘The Eagles defense has played two excellent games!’

For all you challenege flag haters – – Andy Reid won another replay challenge in the second quarter when a LeSean McCoy fumble was reversed. He is 9-for-11 this season on replay challenges.

The Jets converted just two of five red-zone opportunities into touchdowns. In the last two games, the Eagles have allowed just three TDs in eight red-zone tests. In the previous five games, they gave up 12 in 16 opponent trips inside the 20.

The Red Zone and turnovers – turnovers still SUCK but RZ getting better

See Pheags – I am the optimist, and the joyful thought of watching Romo cry like the little bitch he is, makes me hope the Eagles destroy him, then – hopefully – with the season on the line – the Eagles get that shut out against the skins – so the ‘trend’ for just about every aspect of this defense is positive –

you are correct though in saying if this D gets blown up in the last two weeks – all that crap from the beginning of the year will be taken into account

If Spags gets Fired by the Rams (a strong possibilty) he will get a buyout of his Contract and probably take the 2012 Season off to recharge for he will be highly compensated to sit out the Season so there’s no given he would accept any Coaching Job and not a step back to a Coordinator’s Level.. Why would he.. Just to make Eagle Fans happy, C’Mon Guys..
Coach AR will be back in 2012 as will DC Castillo.. Book It Santa…

Paulman have anyone of your so called predictions ever been right? Just asking…come on man, are you and Spags best friends or something for him to tell you any of that.

And no i don’t think making Eagles fan happy would be a reason. If he is let go which I think he will, if your him why not go back to something your good at like coaching defense which can raise the level of faith people around the NFL has in you again, and then take over for Reid here when he is let go after next year. Seems at least somewhat logical to me.

Navy, yea I get you. I would love to always be an optimist when it comes to this team and believe they will somehow make the playoffs…But were 6-8. 6 and freaking 8. It boggles my mind when someone can come out and say that they believe in this defense and castillo right now. Like my god, i would worry about that guy for life in general in hoping that his standards are higher in the rest of his life then they are for his football team. To me you can’t just forget you know about the whole season and the embarrassing performances this team has put out as a whole. I don’t know why Reid was talking about consistency because thats the last thing this defense is which is important in the NFL. But like i said Im with you about the Cowboys, I cant stand that team and even if were eliminated before the game I would still hope that the eagles would not let down and go all out to destroy their season. Its the least they could do for us and their own selves.

i think Philly would be a perfect fit for Spags for several reasons.

1) he would want to get right back into coaching.
2) Philly pays its staff better than anyone,
3) If he comes back and does amazing with this stacked lineup, he looks like a king.
4) If the whole thing falls apart.. he might be in line here for the HC job.

it would seem to make perfect sence… so…. it wont happen.

Remember Steveo,
Most Coaches and Teams have Clauses in their Contracts that if a HC gets terminated, that they would recieve a Buyout Package as part as their Severance and that in many cases precludes that Coach to accept another job unless he wanted to forfeit pay and buyout package.. Many times that Buyout packages is worth more $$$ than a new offer would be for a Coach who was terminated for have a failing record which is why you see Coaches sit out a year or 2 so they can collect their Buyout Deals which is generally higher than a new offer would be abnd especially for a little know Coach like Spags who is not going to command a lot of HC Offers anywhere…

Good point Rev…that Seahawks game was late in the season and put us in a deep hole. Not to be making excuses for the teams current position, but with respect to that Seahawks game, I think the NFL is run by a bunch of idiots. There is no way that the Eagles should have been forced to travel across the country and play a Thursday night game. What, did that one whole day to actually practice that week??? Again, we sucked up the joint, but I believe it would have been a different result if the Seahawks were forced to travel to the Linc and play on a Thursday night. Thanks for making me remember that Rev, it was bothering me!!

paulman
paulman
December 20, 2011 2:14 pm

Thursday games should be relegated to Division Games so there is short travel and also when playing Division rival, the prep-time/game planning is not as exhaustive since you know your opponent pretty well since you play them twice a year every Season..
Have the Jets/Pats – Eagles/Giants or Redskins – Packers/Bears
Falcons/Saints – Steelers/Ravens- Chargers/Raiders, TB Bucs/Panthers.. Colts/Titans ,Browns/Bengals,Broncos/Cheifs, etc,etc

paulman

they (and whoever their opponent is) should not play any other Thursday games

4 Lead Changes alone in the 4th Quarter…
Romo has a Joe Pisarcik moment and fumbles the final snap of the game in a knee-down situation to be scopped up by Babin who as getting tackled by Miles Austin laterals it back to Casey Matthews who rumbles, stumbles and bumbles his way into the End-Zone as the clock expires…
Matthews is carried off the field by DC Castillo and others as Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones appears to have a Heart Attack on Live TV and falls to the field next to Coach J Garrett as he gets trampled on by departing players, cheerleaders, media people and officials..

Navy, I hate the Cowboys with much indignation…But, do you know what I hate more?

A coach that continues to underachieve and hold the most loyal fans in limbo.

If he would have told the fan base this season would be sacrificed to allow the coaching staff as well as the new pieces the gel, his ass would have been ran out of time. But, now he’s giving us this BS as an excuse now. He’s making damn excuses for Juan Castillo so we can waste another season last year, silmilar to McDermotts 2nd season, again after using his 1st year inexperience excuse. Then he fired him!

Can’t you guys see or you’re so hopeful that you’d except a piss ass season praying the math fall in place for an opportunity to get bounced out of the wildcard round?

I’m not buying it.

Remember how you were felt when the Eagles blew the Cowboys out earlier this season?

Yeah..The press claiming the Eagles are finally coming around. Remember? Juan is really improving …remember?

We’re freakin 6-8 fighting to get to .500 with 2 games left.

Hell, I’m cheering for the Giants so the plug can be pulled on this frailed team on life support.

I’m willing to lose if it mean a change in our picking players in the draft along with serious change at the coach position after this season.

hanging on will only give us another year with these losers running the team and another year to excuse off …when Juan get his ass handed to him by the top offensive minds next year.

You all need to get comfortable with AR and Castillo. Unless they lose the last two games and get made to look like they shouldn’t be in the NFL (like they were in the beginning of the year) they’re coming back. I’m not sure how good or bad it will be, but I know the Eagles need to re-sign Jackson, Samuel and get a GM that knows how to draft real defensive talent.

If the Eagles get into the playoffs they need to sign Donovan McNabb since Young won’t be able to carry the load if Vick gets hurt. Either way Eagles should sign Donovan McNabb as the back-up to solidify the QB for next year.

Get used to the fact that D JAX won’t be back, & Samuel will be released, if he can’t be traded. Sign Bowe, Colston, or V Jax instead of D Jax. Get some good, big LB’s, a good Safety & a stud DT to replace Patterson. Maybe replace Mathis, & we can be right back in the thick of things. I am resigned to the fact that Lurie & Banner don’t have the balls, or care to fire Andy & his staff, so I gotta hope we make good personnel decisions, instead. But as long as Rosebud is making those decisions, I don’t think that can happen either. Man, the pains of being a Birds fan. SWEET, JESUS!!!

D-Jax, VY, Steve Smith, Jamal Jackson, W Justice & Ronnie Brown will all be gone from this Eagles Offense and Team for 2012
Re-sign OL Mathis and Dunlap *(draft another C/G and OT in mid-late rounds)
Go out and Sign Free-Agent WR Robert Meachem from the Saints
(Saints will resign Coltston instead but cannot re-sign both)

There will be plenty of serviceable back-up QB around and chances are, Kafka will be elevated to the #2 QB behind Vick and then Draft another QB to start grooming.. Also lots of back-up RB’s in Free-agency around too
