Lurie: “Whether or not (Castillo) was put in a situation….. to fail is for you guys to decide”

One of the most important decisions which needs to be made going forward for the Philadelphia Eagles is the future of defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.  Yesterday Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said that he would leave that decision up to head coach Andy Reid.

“If I have to tell my coach what to do on offense or defense, I got the wrong coach,” said Lurie.

The owner avoided totally admitting that Reid’s decision to make Castillo the defensive coordinator in a year when there was lockout which created an abbreviated off season was a mistake.  He went so far as to say that it wasn’t even his job to make that assessment.

“Juan Castillo is an incredible man and coach,” said Lurie. “Whether or not he was put in a situation where he was set up to fail is for you guys to decide.”

That’s not for us to decide, that’s really for Lurie and his front office to decide.  The part of the news conference in which Lurie was supposed to address the hiring of Castillo was really a side step.

Everybody has their opinion about the Castillo hiring but only Lurie has the power to do something about it and he refuses to do anything.  He’s passing the ball to the media.  All the media can do is give their opinions, but Lurie is the guy who makes the call.

can’t wait to see how annoyed everyone gets when castillos stays, this bs story that came out about spags returning here to be the DC to me was always BS, and castillo will return, if reid stays, castillo stays

G:

I agree, with a caveat. He’s made the decision to keep Reid. It’s up to Reid to decide whether Castillo stays. He’s trying to keep within delegation and chain of command. He side-stepped it because Reid has to answer the media for it…at least, Reid has to endure the questions he won’t answer.
I have always liked Lurie. I frankly don’t understand some of the vitriol directed his way. As a commander, he has set the plan and chain of command, he delegates and lets his subordinates implement the plan. As a community presence, his team is a world-wide example. He has been an outstanding asset to Philadelphia.

That lack of backbone is why the Eagles deserve what happened to them this year.

As soon as Reid floated the idea of Castillo as defensive coordinator to ownership Banner. Banners should have told Reid to “tell me more” while he pressed the red button under his desk with a direct link to the guards at the Psychiatric Ward at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

BSM, LMFAO! Or how about when he pressed that red button, an ejection seat opened up under his seat & shot his @$$ in a bottomless pit! LMFAO! What a total cluster f^#@ & cruel joke, this organization has become! It’s a crying shame!

too good BSM….I would love to of had a video of that meeting…with a close up on Banners face….”you want who?????”

He said that he interviewed Juan at like 2 or 4 am. I can’t help but think that Reid made this move because they fired McDerrmott after Reid said that he would be back and while he was on vacation. Casstilo did make progress through the year, but the decision certainly cosat them a chance at the NFC East championship in a year when all of the team performed poorly.

groundhog day.

Guys, what did you expect?

There’s no room for optimism with this team anymore. Who would be surprised if an offensive lineman or another defensive lineman who turns out a bust gets picked in the first round again.

Really….did Watkins show anything that warranted 1st round attention?

You guys can get pumped up about next season if you want but this team is stuck at go.

We’ll improve to 10-6 with a wild card first round exit at best.

Thank god they we at least have the ‘Wing Bowl”

I agree with nsidious. Yes he side stepped the question but that’s because he gives that responsibility to Reid to answer those questions and endure them. So if he’s decided that anything regarding personnel he’ll leave Andy to answer those questions then he did exactly as he’s always done. I mean honestly, what did we want Lurie to slam a coach that’s still on his staff while at the same time slamming the decision of the coach he just praised? Let’s be realistic now. Now, I’m not saying I agree with his stance, but it is his stance and I respect him because he doesn’t over step the people he delegated the responsibility. Even though he’s the owner he realizes that I don’t need to “flex my muscles” to the public. When they come into my office, they know they answer to me.

Songs, if I remember correctly, the guy you and many wanted the Eagles to draft in round 1 last year was Jimmy Smith. He started only 3 games, and had pretty average stats (nice 2 ints though). But would you say that HE merrited a first round pick? I’m curious, I know that in order to merrit a first round pick, by your standards, the guy has to win MVP, a superbowl, break some records, give you head, solve world peace and fix our economy, but I”m curious if you’d rather they had drafted Jimmy Smith. Watkins turned out to be a regular starter in his rookie season and seems to be a reliable starter for the forseable future at a position that had no reliable starter on our OL.

I think Iwas having a discussionwith Stevo about this earlier – but doesn’t his go along with having harmony on the staff – all working towards a common goal? There was some discussion about wanting coaches that will – I think the quote was ‘get in peoples faces’ So notice the boss – the man at the top – doesn’t do that. He simply states – this is my decision – pass it down – the HC then states to the O and D Cs – and so on – why would anyone want to interject people into the organization that would be a disruptive force vice a unifying force?

I have a rhetorical answer (Green F you knew I would) but curious to hear other thought on the matter

oh christ schiller – songs predicts, wants and asks for 17 things every week and when 2 of them become right a month he celebrates – Shawn Andrews broke hi leg his first year – and the next 3 years was the most dominate guard in the game – Watkins became an integral part of probably the eagles biggest strength (the O and D lines) for a team that had the #2 rusher in the NFL – Have to be careful becuase he is expressing his opinion and Green fan does not like it if I act as the anti non fan

Navy- what I meant is that juan is just trying to figure out what’s going on. We need a coach that can say- “andy my guys are dying, could we run once?”- not- “andy, how many hours you work this week?”

Lourie praised just about everyone associated with the Eagles. They are excellent at what they do. 8-8, no playoffs, no super bowl, no common sense.. This coming from a man with a half head of permed white hair with dark black eyebrows from new england. Makes sense tro him? Why did he even speak. It’s better to be silent than to speak and remove all doubt.

Sorry, Schill …I have never stated once that the Eagles should have drafted Jimmy Smith in the 1st round. So your memory does not serve you correctly.

I gave up on Eagle’s draft day from the time those losers traded out of the 1st round twice and picked Kolb.

After that they proved smarter than everyone bypassing Earl Thomas to pick up scrub ass Brandon Graham…and then a 27 year old fireman for a 1st round when it rare we keep players past 31?

So excuse me if there’s no hype for the draft in Philadelphia anymore. We’ll pick a bum 9 out of 10 times even if we move up to get the bum.
