If Lurie Was Telling The Truth, Reid Will Be Gone If He Doesn’t Win Next Year

Andy Reid will remain as the head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said he’s not afraid of firing the team’s coach and pursuing the next coach to lead this team, but he doesn’t feel that it needs to happen this year, because he’s confident 2012 will be a much better year for Andy Reid and his players.

“If I didn’t think next year would be substantially better, I’d be standing up here announcing a coaching change,” Lurie said.

If Lurie is telling the truth in that statement, Reid will be gone after next season if the team doesn’t have a great year.  It’s too bad he wasn’t more specific about what he meant by “substantially better”.

This is what I expected.  The Birds can get rid of Michael Vick after next season if he doesn’t play well, so they say good-bye to both Vick and Reid if things don’t get “substantially better” next season.

According to the Eagles owner, he took a step back from the team’s awful 2011 season and assessed head coach Reid, his staff and the team’s roster.  Lurie said he looked for the characteristics which would help this team be successful in the future.

“You have to have the anger, motivation, dedication, the focus and the talent”, Lurie said. “My answer to all those questions is yes. That’s why I want to see our team coached by Andy Reid and I can’t wait to see that team play. I wish that was next week, not next season. There is no doubt in my mind that if our focus is on winning a championship next year, the best coach is Andy.”

Lurie spent quite a bit of time explaining why Reid comes across so guarded in his news conferences.

“Fans get Andy Reid that is in press conferences when his goal is to defend players,” said Lurie. “When you can sacrifice your popularity with the fans for the players, it wins over the locker room.”

I respect Lurie’s decision to stay with Reid, I don’t buy everything he had to say yesterday.

Lurie said Reid has the fire in his belly but I’m not sure about that.  I’m also not so sure that the players still hear everything he has to say.

“No coach lasts forever,” said Lurie.

I agree with keeping Andy. But there has to be change somewhere, or the result will be the same.

I would believe that because the team has an option to be free from Vick after next year, combined with Reid only having one year remaining past next year, that Lurie just put off any difficult decsion until next season…he can do that because it is his team…the stadium is sold out and it should not lose any substainial money by just staying the course. If things go badly he can make dramatic changes and allow a new coach an option of changing the qb if needed. It makes sense. Jeff appeared to be pretty honest during his press conference, but as with any public statement, he probably couldn’t say everything he would have like so as not undermine others in the organization.

The fire Reid has in his belly is from the four bacon double cheeseburgers Juan brought him from Five Guys. He doesn’t have any fire and his team reflects that. Thats why we all have to consider the fact that guys like Cowher and Fisher would not really have any interest in this job. Too many players on this team with no guts. They would have to gut this team.

exactly, where’s this so called fire, anger. only anger i see is players angry at the fans, Lurie didn’t talk, act angry either, that press conference was like someone pissing on your back and telling you its raining

I wonder who the coach will be in 2013? This team won’t make the playoffs next year with Juan Castillo calling the defensive signals so Reid will be done. I do feel confident in saying there are not any excuses that will work next year. Win a playoff game or its over. No excuse.
If Vick gets hurt, you should have had a better back up. No excuse. If Shady gets hurt, the QB and the defense should have been able to carry you to 10-6. No excuse. There are no excuses. If you get in as a WC (#3 — #6) you are playing another WC team. You’re not playing a 14-2 team. No excuse. If you get in with a bye, you are now playing a WC team the first game. Definitely no excuse.
I know people want to believe that if he doesn’t win the NFCC next year he’s gone. That is definitely not the case. But he MUST get into the playoffs and win a game or its all over for the fat man. If he does that, he will be signed through 2016.
Scary thought. Myself, I either want him to win the title or fail miserably because I don’t want four more years of Reid. Winning a playoff game or two is just more of the same. And this newest window will close in a couple more years with Reid still here and still no cigar.

Two more things. I’m going to keep saying this until someone starts running with it. Johnny Lyne sucks. How many years did people keep saying this is the year the Niners will win the NFC West and it never happened. Why? Not just Alex Smith. The defense sucked and gave up too many plays. So we bring a two time failed DC in here to coach our corners. Three PBs that combined for six picks and did not even get a whiff of Hawaii this year. Lyne needs to go. He’s a failure as a coach in this league.
Second, Mike Caldwell is a bozo too. He sucked balls when he played WILL here early in Reid’s career. Fire him and let Juan have that job. What do you owe Mike Caldwell? Mike Caldwell should scrub Andy’s underwear because he let him play here when he sucked and then gave him a coaching job. Bye Mike! Now you don’t have to fire your precious lap dog Juan. He can be LB coach at his old salary. If he manages he can still be DC someday somewhere.

@jbird…the secondary was certainly not a “dream” this year, but I wonder how much was Lyne and how much was Castillo drawing up a poor plan. Nhamdi stated that the group (or at least he) did not have confidence in the calls that were coming from Juan early in the season. Not sure who is at fault, but Nhamdi and DRC didn’t play anywhere near their previous performances. This was a supposed to be a strength of the team, but turned into a liability.

Love the spags stuff. Hope they can keep washburn. Move Juan over to lb’s and get someone in here that has worked with CB’s. Trade our 3rd RD pick for a MLB on another team that is good. Use FA to bring in a FS/SS. Let asam walk if we cant trade him. Draft DT or 2 in the first 2 rounds. We need a few lockerroom leaders. I few good hungry guys that can teach the rest how to takle. If most of this happens we have LOTTSSS to be hopeful for.

Good list Rev. You think Spags & Washburn can coexist? I agree with needing some leaders..I think Jenkins is a leader on the DL, but we need a backer & safety who are good leaders and put fear into any receivers going over the middle.

oh green fan – there you are – and Stevo too – my two new best friends – um – your attention to the previous two psots by JBIRD – now – am I being anti fan if I were to place any negaive comments about the previous tw jbird posts – already predicitng the demise of the team – I mean – clearly – he is just exprssing his … um opinion – he thinks Reid is over weight – Caldwell should run a part time laundry, but I am sure it is just his ‘passion’

hopefully I turned down my anti-fan narcissim enough for you ladies

again Stevo – take a look at Spags and Castillo’s first years – maybe if the birds didn’t have what 40 turnovers or the O could have scored a bit more – the eagle could have eeked out 10 wins (hell we lost 5 leads) then would Castillos better rankings be ‘real’ or the ‘meaninglessness’ of the games cause I don;t think the schedule actually changes depending on the stadnings – that’s just the game shown late noght Sunday right….

love the – ‘trade a 3rd round for a MLB that is good’ attention – all GMs in the NFL – we are the Eagles and we don;t really need this 3rd rounder – so if you want to give away a ‘good’ one – we can swap –

anyone know any teams with 2 ‘good’ MLBs so they can trade one for a 3rd rounder

I’m sorry, was that an opinion I just picked on – sorry couldn;t help myself

Navy…I love the MLB for a third round pick comment too. I was like huh? Maybe that same team will give us a PB safety for a fourth round pick. LOL! Hey a third and a fourth for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
Why do feel my assessment of Lyne and Caldwell are negative when they are absolutely true. Not opinions but facts.

Stevo, just curious – why do you refer to the CB on our team who’s first name starts with the letters A-S-A-N (plus to more), as ASAM, when we have another who’s last name begins with the letters A-S-O-M?

What’s the deal with your nickname. Why not call them Asante Samuel and Nnamdi Asomugha? Or Asante and Nnamdi?

If linebackers are flat out not starters…how is it the position coachs fault there not? I dont get that.Rolle and Jordan are back-ups on a C-ship team.

The Niners have a starter behind Willis who we might be able to get. And they will be in the draft slot to get the AZ kid.

Hey, if you can Reed and Lewis for a 3 and 4 – give them Reid, Castillo and Winston Justice, Casey Matthews and Coleman just for being nice

I (despite my reputation) do not know enough about Caldwell and the LBs – they started very slow (duh right) but definitely got it going later in the year – which I think is to be expected as younger players..

As for Lyn – Paulman ahs been stating he thinks he will be the guy that gets fired off the D and replaced

so ‘opinion’ wise no issue – more of the ‘clean Reids underwear’ Reid is fat – Bozo – sucked balls – while I agree Caldwell was not the best player as a will here – the linebackers did improve as the year went on – so how do we account for that – so you may be right – he may need to go – but I kind of lose the thought process at ‘precious lap dog’ Juan

hey – you hear the story that Reid actually had a list of a bunch of other DCs that he wanted to bring in that for whatever reason didn’t work out? Castillo really wasn’t his first choice – Think I red that in Philly.com..

and I will do you one better – hold me to this – must win the division and be at least the NFCC game next year – big push – no excuses – especially if no changes in the staff – the O and D changes are typical inter-season stuff so… is it draft time yet?

Erock – I think LB is going to get lots of attention this offseason – LB, DT, WR, OL (guard center) and S – hoepfully somewhere in there we find a guy like Brian Mitchel who can be a full time kick/punt returner – he can have Chad Hall (and I think Chad Hall spot)

I had asked earlier – should we take our rather large # of picks and bundle them all up to move as high as possible in each round to get at the most 5 picks – or keep all the picks –

Erock

Move up and get that AZ kid if you know hes targeted. Our offense needs no starters.I think we can win a title with this offense. But our backers are offensive.Safety,i think based on Allen being a #2 pick they’re gonna stick with him. Coleman,i dunno…i could see them bringign in a guy to take his spot. Then you have Jarret. Thats two guys you picked in the first 3 rounds. Cant give up on em yet.Get a d-tackle too. Dixon is no lock to be healthy all year. I loved what i saw from Landri.

Free Agent LB’s this Off-Season that I am aware of so far..

OLB Lawrence TImmons from the Steelers (a beast, would be a great pu)
MLB Steven Tuloch from the Lions (knows the Wide9 as I stated last season)
MLB Dan Conner from Panthers (a Penn State Alumni..good player)
MLB Jon Beason from the Panthers (Coming off 2 back to back seasons of landing on the IR for Season ending injures so he may be done)
MLB EJ Henderson of the VIkings (Has Torn ACL in 2010)
MLB Curtis Lofton of the Falcons (has improved every season)
MLB Joe Mays from the Broncos
OLB Q’well Jackson from the Browns (history with injuries)
OLB Rocky McIntosh from the Redskins
OLB David Hawthorne from the Seahawks (underrated)
OLB Xavier Adibi from Vikings (under the radar player)
MLB Larry Grant from the 49ers (will be in demand, very good players)

Eagles need to let DT Trevor Laws & DE J Parker walk in Free-Agency,
Aslo release OLB Fokou… Resign DT Landri and Dixon
Eagles need to sign at least 1 Veteran LB and Draft 2 LB’s in a very deep LB Draft.. Eagles also need to Draft a big DT and maybe add a developmental DE in the later rounds

1 Think to keep in mind is that the Steelers resigned LB’s Harrison and Woodley to big deals over the last 2 Off-Seasons, they may not be able to spend the big $$$ to keep Timmons though I am sure they would want to..
Dan Conner from the Panthers would definitely be one to target..
Larry Grant from the 49ers is WIllis’s back-up and will be a Free-Agent…
sp no need to trade for him..

Funny how the posts so quickly become far more about what others posted than the article.

Anyway – If my goal, like seems to be for Lurie, was to look at next season in a vacuum with no regard beyond it, I agree the best chance the Eagles have at winning an SB next season is to stick with Reid. I also think that even though Reid gives the best chance at winning an SB next year, chances aren’t good enough to justify another year of the same crap.

I’d much rather begin building a championship team, which requires a coach that CAN win the big one, now. I think there’s enough of a foundation of decent players to get a head start without a complete rebuild.

@Pman…you think Connor is big enough to play in the middle? He is tall enough (what, 6’3″?), but always looks kind of slender. I have watched him since he was a freshman in high school…really like him, but not sure if he is big enough to play inside or athletic enough to play outside. He had around 75 tackles this year, but Anderson was really the beast on the Carolina LB corps. With Beason’s 2nd injury, do you think they would let him go?

paulman
paulman
January 4, 2012 9:32 pm

I think Connor would be better at the Will position which he has played all 3 LB panthers due to their recent injuries to MLB Beason and OLB Thomas Davis the last 2 Seasons for the reasons you mentioned .. Not strong enough up top at the point of attack that yo ureally need that MLB to be.. Connor is very good in pass coverages and open field tackling which are proabbly his strengths..
As far as Beason, It depends on his Health, he signed a big contract a few years back and has not really played to earn it. so maybe he gives the Panthers a hometown discount.. and your right James Anderson is their best LB and one of the best all-around OLB in the entire NFL in my opinion and I posted a few times last free-agency period for the Eagle to check him out and try to get him, but Panthers gave him a pretty good deal..
Panthers also have 2 other young LB who played well this year a kid names WIlliams from USC and even J Senn who filled in.. They need help at DT,CB,Safety.. I think the Panthers could be a potential team to land CB
A Samuel either thru a Trade or if the Eagles release him, thru Free-Agency.
as are the Cowboys and TB Bucs

Or we’ll all have to wait until they do improve. I don’t know how old you are or anyone else on here, but we’re all likely to see good Eagles football and a even a superbowl or few from them in our lifetimes. Bound to happen soon. I think next year is going to be improved – and I do think we can improve with nothing more than a moderate FA period, a half decent draft and more time. We’ll see. I”m gonna be a fan and watch and hope and support in the interim though – I shouldn’t have to explain or (to use haterspeak for a brief moment) “make excuses” for that though.

I think Eagles Sign LB Steve Tulloch, WR Robert Meachem & QB Jason Campbell in Free-Agency in March leading up to the Draft
I think the Eagles Resign only DT D Landi and OL Dunlap from thier Free-agent group

I also think the following players move on from the Eagles
(D-Jax,VY,R Brown,S Smith,E Mathis, J Jackson, O Schmitt, J Parker, T Laws,M Fokou)
A Samuel and W Justice get traded for Draft Picks

Eagles then Draft the Following

1st Rd (#15th Overall) – OT Jonathon Martin (Stanford 6-6 305 lbs)
Martin becomes the Starting RT fro mDay 1, This allows the EAgles to move Herremans back to LG as the Eagles do not resign Mathis who wants too much $$$..
2nd Rd (#45 from Cards) – SS Mark Barron (ALabama 6-2 220 lbs)
2nd Rd (#47 Overall) – MLB Vontaze Burfict (Arizona 6-3 250lbs)
3rd Rd (#79 Overall) – CB Trumaine Johnson (Montana 6-2 205lbs)
4th Rd (#101 from Bucs) C/G Mike Brewster (Ohio St 6-4 300lbs)
4th Rd (#111 Overall) – DT Kendall Reyes (U Conn 6-4 300lbs)
5th Round (#143 Overall) – WR/Returnman Joe Adams (Arkansas 5-11 190lbs and 4.38 Speed in the 40, becomes full time return player and 5th WR)

Eagles have 3 Selection in the 6th Rd to use on a FB,TE & RB depth

That’s it from “GM in Training” Paulman

Paulman….I stated last year they needed to keep Bradley just for continuity. I know he did not do great with Ariz but I can’t imagine he is not better against the run than Fokou or anyone else we tried at SAM. And he is a leader. Then I wanted either Many Lawson or McIntosh for WILL. Chaney in the middle. Like the Eagles I over valued Chaney myself. I was wrong and so were they. They relied very heavily on Dixon, Chaney and Allen based on very scant evidence and experience. Leap of faith that cost them. But they also neither resigned Bradley or pursued a FA. Did they really think Jeanty would play SAM? They just had no plan for LBs. Andy took forever to get the WR thing. Does the LB thing finally sink through his thick skull this off-season? That question is one of the four or five that will decide his fate this season if he does not get it right.
1) Keep Castillo or change again to someone like Spags? If Spags comes here we should rejoice over more than a DC. I really believe he won’t come unless AR tells him look, “after 2013 I’m done. I’m either moving upstairs or changing my address but after 2013 I’m out win lose or draw. And you will be in line to be the head man”
2) Come to terms with D Jack or let him walk? I really think the franchise tag is absolutely out of the question. It cripples your cap space for a guy that catches 60 balls and drops 20 for a thousand yards and a few TDs. Not 1200-1500 yards and ten TDs. A thousand yards and a handful or so of TDs. There are FA WRs that can take his place. I can’t believe Bowe would prefer KC if he got an offer.
3) Is he going to aggressively pursue LBs? Not half ass Shawn Barber, Nate Wayne, Takeo Spikes moves. I mean really go after a PB player. He needs more than one pretty good FA LB and more mid to late draft picks and prayers that Mathews and Chaney will come along. He needs one stud and another that’s pretty good.
4) Does he have a contingency plan at safety or is he going all in with Allen and Jarrett just because he drafted them high? We have three safeties on this team and one of them is hurt and needs surgery. So a safety is needed. But what will he do? Will he bring in a journeyman back up? Will he draft someone in the fifth round? Will he bring in a stud FA as a rental on a short term deal (1-2 years) rather than risk Jarrett and Allen not cutting it and being stuck with no back up plan?
5) Renegotiate Samuels contract or waive him if he won’t take a pay cut and you can’t trade him? I wonder what Chicago would think of Samuel for Briggs. They are both older and the Bears need a CB more than a LB. Their LBs tend to be successful within the system and they have a weakness on the corners.

If I was GM I would:

1) Hire Spags and make Castillo LB coach
2) Let Desean move on and use the dollars to get Maclin and Shady extended plus sign a veteran WR like Meachem. Bowe would be nice but too much cap space and we need money to solidify our core of youth and improve the defense rather than give Bowe $8-10M.
3) Try to trade Samuel for a veteran LB or waive him. Sign Grant at MLB in FA. Draft another LB with one of second round picks.
4) Sign the wildly inconsistent Michael Griffin for big dollars for two years with an option to cut him after one year. Like the Jenkins deal. We did that because he had health history and he took it because it was a fat deal. We do the same thing with Griffin based on inconsistency. This guy has been an absolute stud for much of his career but he has also been mediocre and disinterested. He is the best safety in FA next to Landry and Landry ain’t going nowhere. Just for fun and to make us all feel good, (if Denver unloads him), sign Dawkins for one year for leadership and a one more chance to get the ring he deserves and to retire an Eagle like he always should have. Trade Coleman for a low draft pick.

Paulman….signing Mathis is the best route. He can’t demand that much. He wants to stay here and he has been hurt much of his career. He won’t get $4-5M anywhere and his agent knows that. Plus Harremans wants to be an OT. They make more money and his contract is up soon. He does not want to be jerked around. You honor his loyalty. Its the position he wants. He did a good job and he has been a good soldier for years. Let him be at RT. Its the right thing to do.

OT J Martin just announced he’s coming into the Draft and he’s 10 Year Pro-Bowler Type from many observors.. Draft him with 1st Pick, start him at RT,
and slide Herremans back to LG (where I think he’s best suited for) and then you can have Martin eventually take over for Peters at LT in a few years when Peters retires and the Eagles would most likely have a Right-Handed QB by then. Herremans started out well at RT and had a overall solid Season.. but I do think he regressed a little and tired out towards the end of the season and has a difficult time with Speed Rushers .. I prefer Herreamns at LG and paired with Peters at LT make an awesome side to run on..
As far as Mathis, this is the one big chance he’s been waiting for, to start and play healthy free on a decent team so he can get exposure and become a Free-agent and look to cash in for the Money..I think Mathis had a nice Season, but not worth overpaying to keep him and the chance to get a Starting Type of OT for the next 10 Years with the 15th Pick may be too much to overlook for Andy

Burfict had a down Senior Season, had run ins with his Coaches and a couple of off the field issues raising some character flaws and has dropped to the 3rd or 4th Rated MLB in many prospect rankings..
Aslo take a look around the NFL and there just are not many teams really who need a MLB as a priority, so Burfict being presently rankled as the 3rd/4th MLB puts him in mid 2nd Round which could allow the Eagles to get him

My Prediction is that the GIants select Kuechley and the Lions/Ravens Select Hightowter in the 1st Round…
