Mikell: Spagnuolo Open To Returning To Eagles

Philly.com reports that former St. Louis Rams head coach and former linebacker coach of the Eagles, Steve Spagnuolo is open to coming back to the Birds as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Spagnuolo was fired earlier in the week after coaching the Rams for three years.  He could shut it down if he wanted to and just collect a check but Rams safety Quintin Mikell says Spags wants to coach.

“He said he wasn’t sure if that was in the cards,” Mikell said Wednesday during a phone conversation. “At the end of the day I feel he’s a really good head coach, but I think he missed being involved in the play-calling. As the head coach you’re not as involved. It’s a different type of job. Maybe he wants to get back to play-calling.”

Mikell was the source of the report because he says he talked to Spags after he was fired from the St. Louis job.

I think Jeff McLane of Philly.com makes a correct assumption that the longer Andy Reid takes to speak to the media about his coaching staff, the less chance that current defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will keep his job at that spot.  You can bet that Reid is currently burning up the phone lines talking to available coaches.  Reid will likely avoid talking to the media until he has his staff in place.

Espn’s Around the Horn show question today is should Andy be fired? 2 said yes and two said no…..Placke guy said well i guess Mcnabb wasn’t the problem, other one said 14 years is a long time, one said we won 4 straight but that was easily questioned cause they were weak opp. other said well it took Cowher 12 years….But the diff is Cowher did win 1 could have stayed and won two in a tough div…big diff so not everyone outside of philly likes reid…..but i will give him 10 more years we should make playoffs one of these years and win a game lol

I do not care who is the DC. Just be right in whatever decision the club makes. It must result in a better D next year. I personally could not care less which guy it is, as long as he does a solid job.

Lurie said he wasnt extending Reid which makes him a lame duck, if Reid is wise he’ll scoop Spags up to save his job, if you remember, Spags did just that for Coughlin.

Spags to be named DC next Monday and J Castillo will moved to OC as
Coach MM takes the HC Position for the Indy Colts..
Now before everyone panicks about Juan, he will be the O Cin Title only as Coach AR will actually handle the game planning/playcalling duties for the Eagles Offense for Coach AR knows his job is on the line for 2012

C’Mon Jake, there is nothing else to talk about with this Eagle Franchise..
I have some friends out in Indy (I lived there from 1987 thru 1993) who told me that Colts Owner Irsay really likes Coach MM and with the Colts most likley Drafting QB Luck with the #1 1Pick, that they want to hire a HC who is good with QB’s which is probably MM’s biggest strength.. It wold be a good move for the Colts and for Coach MM

Its so simple. Reid is waiting for Fisher to be hired. Washburn will go back to being his D-line coach. Castillo to D-line and Spags to be D-coordinator. You guys think too much. And no way this front office brings in Polian, wake up.

Fisher goes to the Rams over the Dolphins, and then hires DL Coach Washburn, DC Chuck Cecil and Secondary Coach Tim Hauck all go the Rams

Eagles HIre Spags as DC and move Castillo to DL Positions Coach
Secondary Coach Lynne gets let go and is replaced by Castllo’s son who graduated from Iowa as a CB and is a hard worker

Rams have the #2 Pick, Have Franchise QB Bradford and $$ to Spend for Fisher to upgrade his Roster in a hurry signing WR D-Jax thru Free-Agency
Rams go to 2 Super Bowls 2014 & 2016 while the Eagles go about 9-7 every Season and lose in the 1st Round of Playoffs..

Rams also hire Bill Polian/Chris Polian to be their President/GM
The NFC West becomes the dominant Division in the NFC with 49ers/Rams and even the Seahawks & Cardinal playing consistent FOotball while the NFC EAst becomes the laughing stock of the NFL with Redskins,Cowboys & Eagles all struggle for the next 5-8-10 Seasons…The Giants start their run off 6 Consecutive NFC East Division Titles
The NFL decides to force the next Owner of the Eagles to relocate the Eagles Franchise to Los Angeles…

Interesting thought there Pman…would Washburn leave to go back with Fisher?

Is there anyway that the Eagles would look to prevent that contractually?

paulman

In a heartbeat he would, those fellas have been very close for years..
If the Rams have 1 Strength, It’s their Def//Line.. Playng on that fast surface in the Dome with DE’s Long, Hall & Quinn, I could see the Wide 9 being very effective for their front 4 plus a a solid MLB in Laurenitis …
As far as Washburn’s contract obligation .. If the Eagles were to Hire Spags as DC, I think Spags would prefer to see Washburn leave and take his
Wide 9 somewhere else since it really does not fit what Spags likes to do..

Lots of moving parts to this Offseason as usual, with every Coaching/GM move or opening has ripple affects on other teams as far as past relationships, creating new opportunites,Coaching staff changes…etc, etc
I love this time of year for over the next month, you can actually call this time a “Free-Agency Period for Coaches and Football Executives”
Seasons Over, Coaches Fired, Contracts come up, College Bowl Games are over so some College Coaches get into the mix..

Gee Paul…if Washburn leaves do you think AR would bring Seagrest back??

I really hope that isn’t even a thought….don’t know what to say if something like that were to happen.

Pman, you’ve lived a lot of different places and reside in NC now. Can you prove you’re from the Philly area or do you make 12 posts a day on every NFL team’s local blog site. I may have some of my people in NC start sniffing around.

Born in Brooklawn,NJ, Grew up in Voorhees,NJ (next to Cherry Hill/Marlton)
Went to Rutgers-Camden, graduated Fall of 1985, Moved to Indianapolis,In
Fall of 1987, then Moved to Charlotte,NC Spring of 1993, Moved to Altoona,Pa
fall of 2000 which was a huge mistake and the worst area I eve lived)
and finally Moved to Boone,NC Summer of 2005 (the nicest area if have lived)

Since I have moved around may be the reason I have a different perspective than fans living in the “Philly Bubble”, also the fact I lived in INdy just when the COlts came to town and then again in CHarlotte jsut when the Panthers Franchise started that has given me a different perspective.. I’ve seen thousands of fans who had no pro teams love and support their teams from scrtach no matter how good or bad.. Fans elsewhere, outside of the Big Cities out of the Northeast, don’t feel their Teams and Players “Owe’ them anything and for the most part, are just happy they Pofessional SPorts to follow and support..

I’ve just gotten the paperwork back regarding Pman. It’s from the same firm that does the Eagles scouting on college players.
To paraphras, it says Paul Mancini is smart, good looking, well liked man now residing in Boone, NC.

I now know the reason for the poor drafts over the last 2 years. The Boone, NC location may be right, but everything else is crap.
