“Don’t Hate The Player Hate The Tweets” – Evan Mathis Exclusive

When Jeff Lurie came out this past week and told the media Andy Reid will be back for a 14th season, like many fans I was upset. According to his twitter account Eagles Guard, Evan Mathis believes fans like me, were idiots for wanting Andy Reid gone.  Sure, it is bad PR to call fans idiots, but as a fan I think it is cool that he at least responds to us, he interacts with us directly he eliminates the middle man (the media). I was able to contact and interview Mathis about his Twitter interactions with the fans to find out if he really was at war with us, or is he just a dude having his fun with the fans.

I definitely have fun with it, I’m not going to get offended by anything anybody says, I wouldn’t call anything a war though. If they want to really talk about their problems that caused such super sensitivity by being called an idiot then I’m always willing to lend a shoulder to cry on.” Mathis told me. “For those that do want to argue, they need to understand how much [crap]-talking experience I got in middle school. What started with Yo Mama jokes proceeded to get real.”

As one can imagine provoking the Philly Sports fan may not be a good idea, we do not take well on receiving criticism from national media members, and especially from our players, as a result we get pretty venomous. Mathis has returned fire at individual fans this past week by directly going to their twitter page for his ammo.  He pointed out to one Tweeter that the man looked like Sloth from the movie Goonies, and to another fan how the man leads just a pathetic life. Mathis has engaged the fans with a “if you are going to mess with the bull deal with the horns mentality.”

There are some fans who respect Mathis for his approach, other fans not so much. “There’s not many that don’t take it well getting insulted in return.  A lot of them respect getting outwitted and some respect the fact that a player is communicating with them. There’s some that keep taking shots but then I read their timeline for some psychoanalysis and they are just angry souls overall” claimed Mathis. Not all of the hundreds of fans to Tweet Mathis fell victim to his insults some were able to “out-twit” him, and Mathis gladly admits it.

Somebody told me I sounded like I had balls in my mouth in a radio interview.  I’m a bit of a mumbler and usually get a bit nervous on radio and TV so I know I can sound really ogreish at times.” Mathis admitted On the surface it may appear that Mathis is a punk who picks on fans that are less fortune it than he is, and based on what has come out in the media and on his Twitter account in the past week one could see how people draw that conclusion.

However, prior to his Andy Reid tweet Mathis rarely posted anything serious to his twitter account. His Tweets consisted of his dream of marrying Katy Perry, and various random thoughts. “Kobe’s wife leaves him and he tears a ligament in his wrist. That joke tells itself.” Mathis Tweeted on December 21st. Mathis doesn’t hate the Eagles fans, he was quick to point out that they are far more passionate than the fans he dealt with as a Colt.

He also seemed like a guy who does not want to leave Philadelphia anytime soon. “I aim to be the very best at what I do.  Having me on this OL will do nothing but increase our chances of securing the Lombardi Trophy.  I would also expect [the fans] to expect me to support the man leading us.  Would you want a team full of guys who didn’t respect their coach? Would you cheer for that? Jump on board with all of us, full speed ahead, it’s ride or die time.

In my opinion from talking to Mathis he seemed a lot more gracious towards the fans than he did on Twitter, but then again, that is the danger of posting your thoughts when you only have 140 characters to do so. “Understand that I have nothing against the fans, I’m abrasive in my tone at times and I can also express myself like a raging caveman at time” Mathis said.“That’s the mentality that makes me an offensive lineman, I have an undying passion for this game and it bleeds into the real world.”

The last question I asked to Mathis, I believe was the most important question to be asked to Mathis during the past week, Has Andy Reid commented on your tweets, if so, did he ask you to do a better job? “No, I haven’t talked to him about my tweets.  Do you think I need to do a better job? I’m always open to constructive criticism” Mathis responded.

Mathis is a down to Earth guy. I always enjoy reading his tweets. I enjoy reading most the the Eagles players tweets. Mathis and McCoy are probably the best tweeters the eagles have. Graham was good for a wile, but then got run off of twitter. It’s nice to see these players interact with the fans.

who cares…he is trying to finally stick around a team for a couple of years so he continually kisses the bosses ass….we all know somebody at work like that….if he and some of his fellow players played half as tough as he talks to the fans we would be talking about the playoffs right now instead of his stupid twitter postings…really, who cares about the guy

I don’t follow twitter – for any reason. But I gotta hand it to Mathis for being ‘real’ here. I like that he’s defending his coach – Reid will be his coach until he isn’t – for what ever reason – and as Mathis alluded to, It’s inarguable that it’s best for the players and fans to support him – when I say best, I mean in terms of what will create the best chances for success.

Greenfan – I hear you on the ‘butt-kisser’ analogy – sure we all know the suck-up at work etc… but do you disagree that a sports team is a little different here? Andy is his coach, not his boss. Lurie is his boss. You could argue that Roseman is his boss. Sure Reid has a lot of say in player personel…. but Reid is his COACH. A professional football coach is more than just a boss.

This only makes me like Mathis more.

Wait – Offensive Guard – calls Philly fans idiots, refers to them being sensitive, ‘shoulder to cry on’ cocky, self centered, supports his coach, abrasive in tone – asks why would you want people around who don;t support coach, expresses self like ragin cavemen –

jump on board – full speed ahead – time to ride –

that’s it – I had heard a rumor that I had a brother that I was seperated from at birth

Pman – look at Mathis picture – are we close enough we should get a DNA test?????

Stop being so sensitive guys. I mean sure I’m such a sissy that I have to complain if fans want to express their views with a sign, but that’s just because the fans are too sensitive.

Seriously stop being so sensitive, I mean sure I break down in a crying fit of Twitter drama if anyone disagrees with me about who should coach a football team and lash out by insulting the intelligence of millions of strangers….but you guys are really, really sensitive and….it’s making me upset and emotional again. STOP IT, LEAVE COACH REID ALONE!

hate twitter and don’t like Mathis’ comment, but we need to resign him.
After going from team to team throughout his career, he had a really solid year.

See the comment from Pro Football Focus…they ranked him in the top ten offensive players this year. They said:

Evan Mathis, OG, Philadelphia Eagles

“If you’ve been with us here at PFF for a while, you are probably well aware of Evan Mathis. If you’re not, you may still not have any idea who he is. Mathis was the best guard in football this past season. Lining up at guard next to Jason Peters, he helped form the best left side of an offensive line in the NFL for the Eagles–and he did it all being thrust into the lineup late in camp as the Eagles shuffled positions. Mathis played 1,024 snaps this season and did not allow a single sack. He allowed just 15 total pressures on the season (less than one per game for the mathematically inclined) and his +20.4 run blocking grade was almost three times better than the next best mark of +6.9 posted by All-Pro Carl Nicks.”

Sign the guy and tell him to get off twitter

Paul, wouldn’t that be bad advice for Navy to pose as Mathis in Philly, given Mathis’s relationship with some fans? Let’s keep Navy safe….

MAthis was solid – it was good to see the OL come togther and good to hear Mudd is coming back – some of our (historically) best O Lines had great continiuity.. If nothing else gives the team hope for next year – the O line should

im curious to see what the birds do with Djax but i would be open to them using the tag on Mathis if needed. He’s smart tho- i would expect that tag to turn into a 3 year reasonable deal fast.

as far as twitter- I dont care about what players have to say. Their job is to play. They are pawns in a game and they are only people. Sadly- many of them are unaware of real life and should not be counted on as role models.

schill appreciate you looking out for me – but if I read the story (yet another about the ‘passionate’ fans of Philly) about the incident at Geno’s – there would have to be multiple people and they would all have to be much larger then me – As I don’t plan on pissing off the entire Eagle O line – I should be safe

Howard Mudd told the team before Sunday’s game that he plans on returning as the Eagles offensive line coach, several players said.

“I didn’t know the cat was out of the bag,” Eagles tackle Todd Herremans said. “I like Howard. I like his methods. He’s a good personality on the team. I’m excited for him to come back because I think we can just get better and better.”

I believe Mudd returns in 2012, but one thing is for sure, they need to get an understudy to work with him for 2012 will most likely be his final season in football so moving forward, there needs to be an Coach that’s learning whis methods, techniques…
I was thinking that if Eagles do hire DC Spags, then emaybe they would give Castillo some Title to keep a position and job, but with the intent of really having Castillo work with Coach Mudd and back over with the O/Line.. anyone like this Idea…

Wow, Navy, that is perhaps the best news for the Eagles since they drafted Shady (as a Pitt alumn, I “oops I crapped my pants” when I saw that). Paulman, I love the idea of looking for a Proteje for Mudd to carry the torch. Any ideas? (please don’t say juan…)

Schiller,
As far a who currently is on the staff, TE Tom Melvin could be an in-house to learn and maybe be groomed with Mudd since the TE coach and players do work closely with the OL.. Melvin has been with the Eagles for 13 Years and 10 as the TE Coach and you have to say that he’s done a pretty good job with players like Chad Lewis,Celek and though LJ Smith had a ton of talent, It just never worked out for hime and he’s out of Football I believe now
I don’t know if Melvin aspires to move up and coach a larger group..
I don’t know a lot of OL coaches.. Most of the good ones stay employed pretty quickly but the Former HC of the Dolphins Tony Sporano who was the OL Coach for the Cowboys under PArcells has a very good reputation.. He;s out of work right now and maybe could be added to the Staff…

Mathis would fit in here with us, with the ball breaking & name calling. Who cares what he said, he’s the nitwit idiot. They should re-sign him though. Seems like he built good chemistry with Peters. Unless they plan on getting a stud LG, or RT, giving them options with Herremans.

Mathis’ sorry behind couldn’t keep a starting job in Indy, so I guess he decided to kiss the boss’ a$$ this time around. I hope Castillo goes back to coaching the O-Line…at which point the interior of the line will be reconstructed into something that won’t get Michael Vick broken ribs and countless unnecessary hits. It sounds like it’s all going to depend on whether Reid can get Spagnoulo to be the D-Coordinator and convince Castillo to go back to coaching the O-Line. I suspect that’s why Castillo wasn’t allowed to make any comments after the final game. It would be ridiculous to put Castillo out on the street.

Scenario probably plays out something like this
Jeff Fisher takes the HC position of the SL Rams, he hires away DL Washburn from the Eagles… The Eagles allow it since they want to hire DC Spags (who will not work with DL Coach Washburn and his Wide 9) so everyone ends up happy… Castillo gets reassigned elsewher on the Staff.. maybe LB’s Coach or take over the DL or go back on Offense and learn under Mudd who won’t be coaching too much longer…
