NFC Wild Card Playoff Stone-Cold Locks

It’s playoff time in the NFL and the Detroit Lions have the unenviable task of going to New Orleans to play record-setting quarterback Drew Brees a hot Saints team. In the other battle, the Atlanta Falcons will fly north to play the New York Giants in North Jersey.

DETROIT at NEW ORLEANS:  THE PICK, NEW ORLEANS -10.5

The Lions find themselves in the playoffs for the first time since the 1999 season, and it can be owed mostly to the play of Quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Saints however, have ended up where everyone expected them to be. A three seed in the NFC, hosting a divisional round playoff game as a double digit favorite.

These two football teams are meeting for the second time this season. Back in week 13 the Saints hosted the Lions on a Sunday Night and won by a score of 31-17. The Lions beat themselves in that game, as they have seemed to do in almost every big game they have played this year. Detroit committed 11 penalties for over 100 yards, and discipline seemed to be an issue all season for the Lions. Because of their undisciplined nature, the Lions don’t seem ready for the big stage just yet. Detroit was winless against teams with winning records this season, and they were also 0-5 to the spread when playing teams that finished with a record above .500 .

The Saints on the the other hand are battle tested and primed to make noise in the playoffs. The Saints were perfect at home this year, both straight up, and to the spread. Detroit on the other hand has failed to cover their last four away from Detroit. Home field will prove to be huge in a game like this. The atmosphere in the Super Dome is always electric, and could slow down a potent Lions offense that has struggled in pass protection.

Gregg Williams likes to call an aggressive game, and the Saints defense should be able to pressure Stafford all night. I like the Saints in a blowout this week. The Lions might have a bright future but their just not ready to go toe to toe with a heavyweight like New Orleans just yet. Lay the points with the Saints.

ATLANTA at NEW YORK GIANTS:  THE PICK, NEW YORK GIANTS -3

The Giants secured a playoff berth by winning the NFC East title with a win over the Cowboys last Sunday night, while Atlanta beat up on the Bucs to acquire the five seed in the NFC. The Falcons still have a lot to prove, as they have failed in the playoffs under Mike Smith, and they have also been a much different team at home than on the road.

The Falcons have been very pedestrian away from the Georgia Dome. They posted a road record of 4-4, and a 3-5 mark to the spread. But Match ups will likely determine the outcome of this contest.

The key to this football game will be the Falcons Offensive line against the Giants Defensive line. I like the Giants pass rushers to constantly pressure Matt Ryan. Ryan has been hit pretty frequently this year, and that shouldn’t change this week. If Ryan is given time though, Atlanta could do some damage. Their receiving core has a huge edge over a suspect New York Giants secondary. White, Jones, and Gonzalez are legitimate weapons that can torch a defense if given time to work, but ultimately I think the New York front four will take this game over.

The Giants have proven that they can play well in big games like this one, but the Falcons just can’t be trusted, especially on the road in a game of this magnitude. If this game were in Atlanta the outcome would likely be much different, but it’s not. Take the Giants to cover the three at home.

How many teams go 5-1 in their division and don’t win the division. Another record for Lourie and his Eagles. 9-7 would have won the division and with the schedule the Eagles had (all teams combined slightly over a .500 record).
This was as pathetic a season as the Eagles ever had.

it was either last year or the year before the Raiders went 6-0 in Divison and did not win the division or make the playoffs –

‘Most pathetic season’ a little dramatic don’t you think – you must be young!

Hell I can think of at LEAST 3 seasons MUCH more pathetic then this one – Rhodes last year at 3-13 was very, very, very sad. 2005 – the SB hang over was very very bad – could anything else have gone wrong – and most of that was self inflicted – The year the team under Kotite started out at 7-2 and then the birds TANKED – and I do mean TANKED the last 7 82 the strike year was bad –

the 72 Ed Khayatt year was bad – we won 2 games and one of them was becuase Tom Dempsey kicked 6 FG to win 18-17

hell the entire 70’s before Vermiel – games were blacked out – had to listen to Merril Reese on 610 AM radio (remember when WFIL was the big radio staion)

thanks for the um…. memories

**Breaking Eagles News***
Eagles sign former WR/Returnman Mardy Gilyard (formerly of the SL Rams)
who was a 4th Round Pick in 2010 from the University Of CIncinnati..
He’s 5’11 195 lbs and fast.. He caught 204 passes for over 3,000lbs with 25 TD and a 3 Year player for University of Cincinnati.. He was an explosive player in the Return Game on both Kick-offs and Punts while in College and returned 16 Kickoffs for a 23 yard average in 2010 during his Rookie Season.. He was hurt a big in this 2011 in sUmmer Camp with some hamstring issues and did not make the final cut with the Rams.. He is mostly a Deep,Straight ahead speed type of Pass Receiver more than a Route Runner and will need to improve in this area but can definitely help out in Special Teams and compete for that 5th WR Spot most likely between Chad Hall.. A very goosd pick-up on a young player with some real potential and the Universisty of CIncinnati has been very good for the Egles with Trnet Cole, Brent Celek, Jason Kelce and hopefully with Mardy Gilyard..
I wonder if this signing is a pre-cursor of letting D-Jax walk where the Eagles may plan to Draft a Big WR with one of their 1st 3 Selections in the Draft (#15,#45 & #47 within the Top 2 Rounds) and my guess is that it is..

Why no story about this on G.Cobb .. C’mon Man…

Also to answer Navy’s Question, It was last Season the Raiders went 6-0 in the AFC West but still finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs behinf the AFC Divsison Champs the KC Chiefs in 2010

Detroit needs a running back and a few pieces and they are Super.

Lions need OLB, CB and Safety as well as RB and OL help..
They are still a year or 2 away I think from seruioous challenging the Packers for NFC North supremacy, but they will win their share of games over the next could of Seasons.. Remember they lost 2nd Round Pick RB Mikle Leshoure to injury in summer camp and really did not have a healthy DT Nick FAirley for an entire Season, they get those 2 players back plus RB Travis best, then add some OL and Secondary help, they will be a very good team that is explosive offensively and can beat you up at the line of Scrimmage Defensivily so they kind of have the best blueprint for success..

Not to change the Subject
If anyone is interested, check out the Arkansas vs Kansas State Game and check out the 2 WR’s from Arakankas that will be in the upcoming 2012
WR Jarius Wright or WR Joe Admas (who also returns Kicks) and both are projected to to mid-late 3rd ROund to mid-late 4th Round Selections..
Both these guys acan fly and run a 4.35 40 time
JArius Wright is probably the more accomplished WR at this stage of their development while J Adams is a better Return man..
Wright is 5-10 185lbs while Adams is 5-11 and about 190lbs… I see some potential in both thiese kids and especialyl Adams.. Maybe a diamond in the rough as WR for a year or 2, but can contribute right away as a Return man and hes at 190lbs and little stronger than defenders and people think…

Paulman, They fired the wrong coach, this can only mean Castillo stays, i bet a lot of people on this site is gonna be happy, Castillo and those great D stats gets to stay, but why wouldnt he, look how good the D looked the last 4 games playing against such great QBs like Matt Moore,Mark Sanchez, thats 3rd string from Dallas whos name i cant remember, and Mr. all world himself, Rex Grossman, i guess its a no brainer to keep him.

There is no doubt in my mind that Castillo remains, I am not sure as the DC depnding if SPags comes on baord or not which as long as DL Washburn and his Wide 9 are in the Philly, the Spags will go elsewhere… The only hope I see is Jeff Fisher taking the Rams Job, then getting his old buddy Washburn to go to SL as their DL Coach, which theEagles would proabably allow if they could in turn secure Spags (Though the DL Cole,Babin won’t be happy)
If this scenario does not play out, then Eagles will get a new Secondary Coach and the rest will most likley remain intact…

**Rumor Mill**
COlts to hire Eagles DIrector of Player Personnel Ryan Grigson as it’s GM to replace Polian… Grigson has spent 9 years with the Eagles in various Scouting Positions and is 2nd in command under GM Roseman..
Grigson first hire in INdy will be O/Coor MArty Mohrnewig as the Draft QB A Luck with their 1st Pick and want a QB Friendly Coach to help groom him which MM has an excellent reputation in this area.. The EAgles being to scramble to fill out positions on their Staff and many around the NFL know that Coach AR is most likely in his fainl year in Philly.. This could turn out to be a bigger problem than many thinkh for it’s diffcult to hire a Good Staff when th eword is out that you are likely in your final season as a HC.. Most Coaches do not wna tto uproot families and move for what could be a 1 year positoin/job on a team/organization that may be falling apart little by little…

I don’t belive SPags will come to PHilly as long as DL Washburn is here..
Spags is not a proponent of the WIDE 9 and would not be a good fit for his System.. Unless Fisher takes that Rams position (Which I believe will be announced tommorrow) and hires Washburn with to take to Rams, I see very little possibility of Spags joining this Staff and again, everyone has to remember that Coach AR is in a a “lame duck’ situation with 2012 very likely his final Season as HC of the Eagles, So probably not many Coaches who have other options and opportunities are going to be jumping for a chance to go down with and in the AR ship… This is my take on things..

Anyone have any idea why as a Qb or Offense you want to have long counts..
Falcons QB Ryan are playing right into the hands of the Giants Defense and Crowds… A way to lessen the crown noise is for quick snaps, You can;’t expect you OL to be down in their stance for 20 seconds and then come off the snap count quick enough to block the Giants DL.. Just stupid play calling.sanp count adjustments by Ryan who I think is a good QB, but not an elite QB (of couse unless he’s facing the Eagles Defense)
How come and average Joe like myself sees this from the TV set and their Coachign Staff doesn’t …. Assanine..

Anyone see the Falcons/Giants Competing against with the Packers or even the Saints or Lions… Just another Tier that the Eagles are dropping and even in when they are not playing on..
Talk about terrible play calling, You have Ryan do a sneak when the guy can’t move and yo uhave a 245lb RB in M Turner… Falcons suck on the Road..

I had a feeling these Sunday games would suck and be one-sided.. Falcons are kind of going the same path as the Eagles.. They win 10-11 Games every year, make th eplayoffs, play well at home but never show up against the good teams when it really counts and especially on the road just like the Eagles who don’t even play well at home any longer…

Giants match up very well versus the Packers, I expect it to be a close game and be anyones game late in the th Quarter… The PAckers have not played all that well down the stretch but do get WR Greg Jennings back…
A blowout is very unlikely… both NFC Games next week are the 4 best Teams playing the Best Ball right now and both should be good games..
The Giants come off of 3 Games in a row where the dominated the line of scrimmage verus the JEts,COwboys and Falcons, so they have to be feeling pretty good about themselves and also have a healthy RB Bradshaw, WR Nicks and Manningham adn a Healthy DL Tuck and Unemyura… I like the Giants chances real good versus the Packers and they will not be intimidated playing up in Lambeau Field like other teams can be…

Falcons have talent but are soft when it matters most (like the Eagles). I don’t know where Spags will be next year but I’m pretty sure he wont be going to the Giants after that defensive performance. Fewell just saved his job (if it was even in jeopardy to begin with)

A couple of DC positions are open right now..
The SD Chargers comes to mind by I expect Jack Del Rio to accept this job.
Then you have the KC Cheifs (who promoted DC R Crennell as the HC)
The Tampa Bay Bucs and Jacksonvilel Jaguars HC are open and I imagine their DC’s positons too…
I think the Indianapolis Colts are going to hire Eagles Director Of Player Personnel Ryan Grigson (2nd in command under Roseman) this week as their GM, then I think Grigson hires Eagles O/C MM as the Colts HC who in turn hires Spags to lead the Colt Defense..

I’ve always been envious of the kind of team that the Steelers have been for decades, stuff it down your throat, and grind it out offense with a tough, often very tough defense, like the Buddy Ryan defenses of years ago. I love Polomalu, he’s still amazing player but, James Harrison is a dirty player and I can’t condone his cheap shots. There was absolutely no reason for him to go low, for the knees, like he did on Decker. Cheap ass player with dirty shots that is disgusting. Crap like that makes me want to see them lose. Yeah, I know Andre Waters had a reputation BUT it was a different game then and his reputation was far worse than his play regarding “dirty” plays. He was an incredibly hard hitter but I didn’t think he was cheap.

Football is too soft nowadays; stop being media fed into what’s called cheap shots and dirty plays MTC. If you really watched buddy ryan’ guys in the 80’s you wouldn’t be so soft on harrison. Football hasn’t changed, the money grubbing media mogul and commissioner are ruining and changing real football. I live to see the 85 bears, Bills, and boomer Esiason/’Icky woods play real men’s football. This stuff today is for pansies and because of the protection of Brady and Manning etc. Bill Romanowski, ronnie lott and lawrence taylor; I miss those guys. like lawrence taylor would say to a qb he just sacked and destroyed: “son’ ya’ll gotta do better than this” or “lets go out there like a bunch of crazed dogs”! Football today is for you new late blooming pansies.

I don’t think Football is too Soft…Philadelphia has become too Soft like the former Gov Rendell said…
The Steelers,Ravens,49ers,Giants still play Physical Football as the Broncos & Titans and as Arizona is beginning to do… It’s just since AR has coached the Eagles, that they have become softer and softer each season and now 13 years later at the helm, The EAgles are a reflection of their Coach which is small, fast, rely of gadget and trickery instead of simply beating the man lined up in front of you..

Rocko – I love hard-hitting football and I don’t buy the media crap any more than I condone an obvious cheap shot at a players knees or head. When I see a player take two or more steps and going for head or knees I call ’em like I see ’em. CHEAP. Beat the opponent in the ground with a clean shot. If you happen to knock the player out of the game with a clean shot then it must’ve been one hell of a hit and that’s football.

I will say that I think too many rules have been changed that hamper the defense and heavily favor the offense BUT, I completely agree with reasonable changes to try and keep these plalers healthy. That doesn’t include BS calls when a defensive player barely swips the QBs helmet and gets called, that’s crap too.

Noway. They understand the players didnt make the plays. Tebow showed great poise. Man he is cool….and tough as hell to take down.He learns to read the multiple layers of offense in fornt of them they can get to the title game in 12′.

Tomkat brings his squad down to earth. Mendenhall and Clark out for the Steelers killed em.Clark is a top shelf tackler with above average coverage skills. Mendenhall is a great bounce runner, even know the Broncs played the edge well, none of the Steelers backs could pop one.

Bunk was playing some good football, more of an indictment on them not playing great defenders in position.I.E. #24 in cover 2 or a loose 1. Bump and run every down next year for him.

Local vs. Nat’l Media

someone asked about examples of differences between the way the Ar treats the local / national media. 2 quick examples:

Reid’s interview with NFL Films last year. Pleasant and full of humor (remember the old footage of AR at the punt, pass & kick). Expanded answers during exchange.

Reid’s post game press conference after final game of season, and why they view him as arrogant (borrowed from Ray Didinger):

It is when Reid is asked, for example, why the Eagles missed the playoffs and he says: “We were 8-8 and the other teams, they weren’t. They had a better record so they made it.”

It is when he is asked, as he was Sunday, when he would start thinking about his future with the Eagles and he says: “I’ll think about it when I want to think about it.”

It is when he is asked a direct question about something that happened in the game, a fourth down decision, a red zone call, something very specific, and he says: “I’m not going to get into all that.”

Most who know AR say that he is personally a nice man. When you listen to him on his radio show, he can show glimpes of this along with humor, but is too little when dealing with anything local.

So back to Big E…I agree with you that AR deals differently with local vs. national media, and thus they treat him differently in their coverage evaluation of his performance. Some on here believe that it is crazy that AR’s job should even be in question, however if you have paid attention to many of the national shows, they have even questioned it during their panel discussions…be it Mike & Mike…Around the Horn…Fox NFL coverage…whomever, they are also asking the question, so is the local media so wrong for having asked the question earlier?

perhaps my cross dressing (and hey, those things are OK) drama queen with the small IQ and even smaller understanding of the world of football – sugar bricthes you are the one that developed the man crush on me –

I am sorry – did I tell you something was off limits – really – I just find it amusing when folks that clearly can’t or won’t serve think it is cool to throw out comments typically directed at those that do – for example ‘squid’ is somethng typically an Army, Air Force, or Marine would say to a Navy guy – Jar Head is what you call a marine – Grunt or Troop for the Army – so here comes some no serving douche thinking he is ‘part of the crowd’ like we are going to sit arounf the VFW and swap war stories – like you actually did something?

as for you being tired – I do not give a rats ass what you are tired of or how tired you are or anything else about you, find a rock, crawl under it and rot – don;t like my posts, don’t read um,

I have made my position clear for years – you (or anyone else) prints stupid shit (like Reid gives special attention to the national media, or Reid only won becuase he had Rhodes holdover players)), I will print a response – thought I made that clear – by as I see by your post, you have a very difficult time actually reading words and then comprehending the meaning of those words – becuase if you read – I would have infomred you that in THIS generation – your cross dressing tendencies not only would have been accepted, but possibly encouraged, my generation, they would have been frowned upon – but I guess the reading comprehension is what tripped you up on those standardized tests huh –

and really jack nut -‘enlightened’ I said no one cares – I see we clearly need to get you that dictionary – either that or you have very selective reading (very typical in teenagers – any see/hear what you want)

dude – you can say or think you spin me up, get me going, if that makes you feel better and gets you through the day – I enjoy ball breaking, and all though you appear to have tiny testicles, I got no problem ball breaking with you –

now again – quit acting like a whiny sniveling little gnome – grow a pair – man up.
