Superbowl XLVI Should Be Remembered As “The Mediocre Bowl”

Once again Eagle fans are forced to watch the rival NY Giants celebrate a Superbowl championship. On Sunday night mediocrity reigned supreme in the NFL as the 9-7 Giants became the first team in NFL history to win a Superbowl with that record.

The Giants finished a measly 1 win better than the Eagles in the standings and found a way to hoist their 2nd Lombardi Trophy in 4 years. At one point during the season they were 7-7 yet they are the ones planning a parade for this week. It’s absolutely sickening to see this as an Eagle fan.

I’ve gone back and forth all season about just how far the Eagles really are from holding a parade of their own and after tonight’s Superbowl it’s clearer than ever before that anything can happen in this league. Superbowl 46 was downright atrocious to watch not only due to the fact that both participants are hated in Philadelphia but because the game itself was boring and had very little excitement. Both teams looked flat for the most part.

The Patriots team that came into Philadelphia in November and put on a show was nowhere to be found in Indy. This New England team was downright beatable and the Eagles could have easily handled them. The Rob Gronkowski injury had a lot to do with the ineffectiveness of the Patriot offense but regardless Tom Brady didn’t look himself all night and the Eagles could have easily handled that offense unlike in November.

The Patriots defense looked mediocre at best in Superbowl 46. Without a doubt in my mind the Eagles offense with all the weapons they have would have put up at least 30 points on them. They looked nothing like a defense you’d expect to see in a Superbowl and it’s absolutely mind boggling they got to this point with such an average unit.

The Giants were just as average as the Patriots in this game. Once again they had luck on their side and happened to step up at the last possible second to pull out the victory. Eli Manning was clutch in the end but for the most part didn’t impress for the duration of the game. His stats say otherwise but he really didn’t make any impressive throws until he hit Mario Manningham for a 38 yard sideline catch late in the game.

For everyone out there that wants to anoint Eli as a Hall-of-Famer after this one go for it but in my opinion he had himself a good season and proved to be a clutch quarterback and needs to perform like this for a number of consecutive seasons before he’s a legit hall of famer to me. The Giants defense caught Tom Brady on a mediocre night and the Patriots offense didn’t have Rob Gronkowski to utilize. Eli has 2 Superbowl MVP’s but for those of us who look past the lens of network coverage Eli’s first Superbowl win can be credited to the Giant defense.

Superbowl 46 should be labeled as the mediocre bowl. Unlike the game played 4 years ago between both teams this one didn’t have the excitement as that one. Both teams looked flat and didn’t put up the points many of us expected. If just a little more time was on the clock Tom Brady would have driven the Patriots down the field for the winning touchdown. Brady lost not to the Giants but to the clock.

The bottom line is after watching this game I believe the Eagles are right there for a run at the title next season. Think about it we just witnessed a 9-7 team win the Superbowl. What business does a 9-7 team have being labeled a champion? 9-7 is average and should never be a champion. But after tonight it just proves why not the Eagles? Why can’t a team that finished 8-8 win it all the next season?

To me it’s just mind boggling to see this happen and the fact the Eagles only finished one game behind the Giants and also beat them in NY with their backup quarterback who was atrocious in that game says to me that the Eagles are right there. The Packers and Saints are still the class of the NFC and now I’ll put the 49ers in that group as well but the Giants are just a mediocre team that caught everyone on a bad day on their way to the top in 2011. If the Eagles stay healthy next season and the coaching staff somehow finds a way not to lose games this team can be right there.

Immediately following the game Brent Celek tweeted “I’m sick about this” and he should be. Celek knows just like the rest of us the Eagles squandered an opportunity this season. They blew 5 4th quarter leads and lost games they had no business losing. He realizes this easily could have been them and is upset about it.

The Giants aren’t that good and the Eagles know it. As I said in an article a few weeks back maybe the Giants winning it all wouldn’t be such a bad thing because it will wake everyone in the organization up. The sickness being felt by Brent Celek hopefully is being felt by the rest of the players and the coaching staff because if you aren’t angry and motivated after watching Superbowl 46 then I’m not sure you need to step on the field in 2012 as an Eagle.

Let’s Face it, Eagles Season was over about 3 months ago by in early November after those back to back home losses to the Bears & Cardinals to
to fall 3-6.. It doesn’t matter how you get into the playoffs, but you have to make the dance and we have seen the few Seasons, teams the NY Giants,PAckers last Years, Cardinals a few years back and the Giants in 2008 get hot at the right time and carry it to the Super Bowl.. The only real positive to this Season is that this SUper Bowl just proves to the many good Teams in the NFL, that ir you make the Playoffs you have a chance and that there is a fine line between winning and losing, Turnovers,Penalties and Negative plays will kill your changes.. and in the end, playing physical football and especially down in the trenches does matter and does make a difference as the Playoffs go deeper.. So going into next Season, many NFC teams like the Packers,49ers,Saints, Giants,Lions and even teams like the Cowboys,Falcons,Bears,Seahawks and the Eagles are going to think they are not very far off with a few tweaks and upgrades to their Rosters

It is amazing how impartial you are. You should be fired for this article. The game may not have been the greatest ever but when a game winning TD is scored with less than 1 minute to play it is far from mediocre. I am an Eagles fan and I can say that more than one game separated the Eagles from the Giants. What separated them wasn’t 5 blown 4th quarter leads it was Vicks inability to protect himself and the ball. There was nothing down the 4 game winning streak meaninigless stretch that suggested otherwise

don’t worry about — Joe Banner has the gold standard plan and Jeff Lurie has instructed him to give it to Howie and Andy

Tough to watch this entire playoffs this year. Probably the toughest ive had in my life. But as i watched the giants play it was very inspiring. A team battling from the bottom to reach the top. Will this be of help for the eagles? Im sure it is encouraging knowing that if you make it into the playoffs you give yourself a chance. This year for the eagles were way too many missed opportunities, and way too many turnovers. The giants just dont turn that ball over, there a very disciplined well coached team. It pains me to say that but im an honest guy. The eagles are not far away but they do need to make adjustments to there overall philosophy if they want to be where the giants are right now.. Run the ball more and have balance, and you cannot turn the ball over, you have to take care of that thing. The defense has to cause more turnovers and play more disciplined. And it helps that the giants have a system there on both defense and offense that they dont deviate from. They have pretty much the same players from there SB year on that dline with the addition of Jason Pierre Paul, so they have 3-4 pass rushers coming at you every play that can stop the run too.. No wide9 needed. Thats what i want to see from the eagles. The giants have what the people want and thats not just the rings, its the overall team concept. But the difference between Reid and Coughlin is that Coulin was and is willing to make the proper adjustments, if that involves him off the field with his attitude or on the field with the way he runs that team and calls plays.. Will we see a new andy reid and philosophy? Maybe.. if not we ll be right here again next season wondering what if all over again.

Maybe after the 2012 Season Zero Superbowls,
We as Eagles Fans are stuck with who they have (Caoch Ar,MM & JC) and a GM in Howie Roseman and that’s just the way it is..

Reid would have been crucified for the challenge late in the 4th on an obvious catch (though Bellichick will get a pass) the cost NE a very important TO.

Or how about the terrible decision at 2:09 to go to send an all out blitz against Manning??? Good Qbs invite the blitz!!! This might work against Vick, but not against a QB who knows what he’s doing….Manning converted the first down.

Nice coaching Belichick, Good thing You’re not the HC of the Birds…….we’d be calling for your head tomorrow…..

Pattriots will start to hear the heat up in NEw ENgland
2 Years in a row they failed to upgrade their DL and WR corps
The are 0-2 in their last 2 Super Bowls (2008 & 2012) and they were 1 & Done in the last 2 Playoffs Seasons .. Clearly Brady needs some more playmakers on the outside to help spreadt the Field.. and some WR bigger than 5’10
Their TE’s are dyanmite but they need on Defense and really need to upgrade their Center who was getting blown off the ball a good part of the game Giants DT #97 (Linval Joseph) and #91 (Justin Tuck)

I guess the eagles season should be called the mediocre season then.Giants turned out to be the real dream team.Giants defense is better than the eagles.Maybe that is why the patriots offense did not do more as the giants did not have an offense line coach running the defense.

When FAT ANDY gets 5 superbowl rings then he can make the so called mistakes that belichek made…

Eagles owner Jeffrie Loser is to blame for sticking with Self destruct Andy Reid and expecting a different result after 13 seasons…

The Eagles would not have been able to beat the Patriots or the Giants on Sunday. Who on the Eagles would have made the catch that Manningham made? Would the Eagles have gone almost the whole game with no turnovers? Not likely. Or how about the stupid string of penaltys the Eagles like to get.

Like Andy Reids children, the Eagles are simply not disaplined enough to win the big game. What type of team does Andy Reid think he is coaching when he feels his players are so weak that he has to “protect” them at the press conferences.

Get some darn MEN who don’t have to print “heart” on a T-shirt, but can display it in a game.

Eli displayed heart on the field. He got wacked in the SF game and threw a pin point clutch pass in the Superbowl.

A team is a reflection of it’s head coach. The Giants have a tough head coach who is in shape and a disiplined martial arts expert. We have a fat overweight, drug dealing KingPin.

The Giants are the LUCKIEST and WORST team to EVER win a Super bowl. I never seen a team get EVERY single bounce throughout the playoffs and when does Welker ever drop a pass. What everyone just witnessed was someone from above wanting the Giants to win.

I have never read a more one-sided article….give it up…

Eagles are nowhere near the Giants

The Giants win big games
5-0 in NFC champ games
4-1 in Super bowls
.900 winning pct

Don’t cry over lucky plays either…

Luck is the intersection where preparation and opportunity meet.

Eagles need a real QB and new coach – until then they are a. 500 team

goforit, we need an entire FO, new coaching staff, QB, #1 WR, entire LB corps & a strong safety. Other than that we’re good to go. F^#@ the Eagles. I’m still disgusted at that snooze fest of a SB, that was played. BTW, did anyone else think, everytime Madonna opened her legs, a dust cloud would poof out. What a waste of 4 HRS. The commercials sucked too. At least my party was awesome.

I remember the Miracle at the Netherlands 2 and it still has a bad taste in my mouth but the emotion here in NY was damn we got our butts kicked and the Eagles deserved the win. I put credit where credit is due and for the most part the Eagles are always kicking our butts. But not one Philly beat writter is willing to say the Giants proved they were the best team this year when it counted. For that, I will always be a Philly hater. I respect a man when a man knows to give his rival its due.

this article is pure trash, the giants are a better team, better organization, the posters here talk about whiny bitches, this author sounds like the biggest puss eagles fan ever, wake the f up, the giants have a dominating defensive front, good, young receivers and now a hall of fame quarterback, stop your whining, aspire to the giants model of winning super bowls, instead of being the “gold standard” of a business model, screw you jeffrie lurie, with your liberal, progressive ideas you have failed in your promise to the fans of multiple championships, sell the team, you made millions, your stewardship has failed, failed miserably…

Listen to the d-bag Giant fan looking for people to wax poetic about your squad. They did enough when it counted and got it done, wtf do you want a Philly sports writer to send you a copy of a pre-draft? Congrats bro. And send me a link to your Giant website…Im less interested in that then watching your parade. Congrats bro. We had one too a few years ago.

Observations
That defense for the Pats was a joke.
Bellichick shoulda ran more.
Eli has elite pocket poise and great off balance throwing ability.
Victor Cruz is gonna be a problem for a few years. Draft another corner.
Welker is a great wide. But losing Gronk killed them…flat out killed them. They had noone making great plays.Giants corners played well.

Pats d….who are there pass rushers?Russian dude and Mark Anderson..from the Bears? That dude. They looked horrible.

Look they played great. But the knock you out brand of NFC East style of ball is back. Thats gonna win it for you now.Pack did it,Steelers,Gmen…Saints played angry that year.

Anyone once you get to the ship can score points.Dont tell me our back isnt elite and our q can play hihg level. Oline…stout.

So fix the d..or tweak it. But the Giants d balled out.Ears pinned back…head on fire.

GIANTS beat EVERY powerhouse that stood in their way, and as you may or may not know, the NFC was not even debatabely the powerhouse conference this year, and we beat the absolute BEST teams in the NFL to get to the Super Bowl, excluding Atlanta who isn’t a push over either, but according to G Cobb, i’m sorry, we just caught all of them opponents on a bad day, i’m gonna go laugh at this garbage, GCOBB, get a tissue pal, and maybe a new job too while you’re at it….GMEN!!!
