Eagles Sign Todd Herremans To Three-Year Extension

The Eagles signed right tackle Todd Herremans to a three-year extension for $21 million dollars.  The deal runs through the 2016 season.  Herremans had a guard’s contract and was moved to tackle just before the regular season started a year ago, so his deal needed to be redone.

A tackle is much more valuable than a guard in most NFL offenses.  The guards are asked to block defensive tackles in a limited area because it’s congested inside and most of the tackles aren’t very quick.  If a guard has good size, strength and decent quickness, he can pass block, but a tackle has to have great size and athletic ability.

At the offensive tackle position, each week he’s facing an amazing athlete with a great combination of size, strength and quickness.  Most of the time, he’s on an island and has to stop these speedsters from getting around the corner or bull rushing them.

Herremans stabilized the Eagles right guard situation and he’s even more important in the Eagles offense than most right tackles because he protects the blindside of left-handed quarterback Michael Vick.

This is a side note, but the increase in payment to Herremans for moving from left guard to right tackle, let’s us know that the Eagles had no business using their top pick last year in drafting 27-year old right guard Danny Watkins.  A guard isn’t worth a first round pick unless he’s a great athlete and dominating blocker, who opens up inside holes for a dominant running team. Pass blocking at the guard position isn’t one of the more difficult jobs in the NFL.

The Eagles could have signed numerous free agent guards to come in and do what they ask of Watkins.  Check out how they got Evan Mathis who is playing the left guard position.

Herremans on the other hand has been an extremely valuable offensive linemen, who can move out and play tackle.  He’s to the quick feet and body control to do it.

“We are excited to be able to sign Todd to a new contract,” said Eagles head coach Andy Reid. “Todd’s intelligence, toughness, durability, and leadership are second to none. Very few players in the NFL can play at an extremely high level at both the guard and tackle positions and Todd has done that for us. He has been a big part of the success of our offense over the last several years.”

Great job Eagles, now resign Mathis and Landri.

I think this means good news for Mathis. There is no way they would give Herm RT money if they thought they were moving him back to the guard spot. Look for a solid but fair deal for mathis and now we are set.

as far as watkins goes- Im going to disagree with G here. We have had such trouble on the line for years. Andrews sisters, justice getting killed against the Giants. We had a HUGE hole (or 3) on the line last year and now (assuming we get mathis under terms) that goes away. What would they have drafted at that spot last year that would have been better? I understand that G doesnt really warrant a 1st rounder but either does LB and we may still get just that.

Garry – interesting point there about Watkins/Herramans, and what you do at guard. But your point is a little flawed – Herramans was a guard and tackle in college – a versitle quality lineman – kinda standard. Then he played guard for a while in the NFL, got real good, and now is playing quality tackle. Your point was that guards are not that valuable to draft and are more interchangable..etc… but Herramans WAS A GUARD. Who knows, maybe Watkins follows in Herraman’s footsteps – quality lineman who plays different spots in college. Comes to the NFL, plays guard, develops into quality OL who can be used around the OL.

My point is, that Herramans WAS a guard who can now play tackle. Same may be true for Watkins – also a small school OL from college who Reid played at guard early.

Just sayin…

If Laws & Allen were not early round picks they wouldn’t be Eagles. Can somone please tell me why Trevor Laws still have a job?

Songs, Trevor Laws played well late last year in reserve, and he has a job for 3 more hours until further notification. Got substance?

And did you just write off a rookie before the start of his second NFL season? That’s what every NFL current or formor employee – from owner, to coach to player… .would call STUPID

wow songs – you watch any games – it was actually the guy they brought in to fill in for him till he was ready that got beat – then they shifted watkins in and the O took off – you know – franchise records in yardage – #2 RB in NFL – QB sacks way way down (and many were because Vick rolled outside the OTs) –

here paste this – you just make shit up – you are the ass

so dude – much like your lame ass mancrush on that LB that did not have more then 10 tackles in ANY game last year – had 0 (that would be ZERO) forced fumbles and 1 int and 3 passes defended for an ENTIRE season – as a matter of fact as a starting MLB he AVERAGED 5 tackles a game – 5 – he actually had 2 games where he had ZERO solo tackles – yeah – gonna be a real beast in the NFL – barely eligible to play his freshman year (academics) constant problems with attitude and penalties….

get a freakin clue –

Um – Hermanns stabilized the RG??? huh – Hermanns was a College all american as a tackle – he played both tackles as a rookie (Tra Thomas had an injury) With Thomas back the Birds wanted him on the field so they moved him to guard ) Winston Justice was supposed to be back from injury to play RT and multiple folks had a chance to take the RT sport – none could (remember lastyear the non -stop chatter about ‘the blind side’) Ried said several times Hermanns was an option – so they slide him over – what the hell he had to do with ‘stabilizing’ the RG is beyond me –

the key tackaway from this is 1) Hermanns had a great year last year 2) Mathis had a great year and (hope like hell) the birds want to keep him and 3) hopefully this means we have the exact same lineup (Peters, Mathis, Kelce (several all rookie teams), Watkins and Hermanns together for a few more years

the way Celek and Harbor have improved blocking and McCoy running – very potent offense –

I think one of the key issues that prvented Hermanns from moving out earlier was he seems to battle foot issues – hopefully that is resolved – lot more space out at DE

agreed Navy…..stability on this line, in their second year under Coach Mudd, can only make things better for the offense….all around. Obviously Shadey needs to have a strong line, but I believe that the high rate of turnovers from Vick last year will be greatly helped by the line play up front.

Songs i disagree. Watkins did fine after he had time to learn. Im not ready to say our Oline was amazing but it was for sure solid for the first time in many many years. C and RG were new and they both got up to speed at time went on. I see great things for this line if they can lock Mathis up and stop putting KING in Vicks fav throwing lane.

Im telling you- this O will be great if they can land Plax and and bring in a backup RB. Vick needs to slow down and waatch film and andy needs to give his D a break by putting together good drives.

On D- get 2 LB’s and perhaps a FS. Songs- you and I are on the same page as far as bangers goes…. we need some beef. Not sure we are on the same page as how to get there but its all good.

I would sign RT Eric WInston immediately and slide T Herremans back to LG and say bye to Evan MAthis.. RT WInston is a 6 year Pro started 87 of 92 Games for the Texans and at 6-7 305lbs with very athletic feet would be a great fit for OL Coach Mudd Schemes.. He’s 28 Years old with a good 4-5-6 Years of playing at a high level still and could make this Eagles OL one of the Top in NFL with Peters,Herremans,Kelce,Watkins and Winston across the board..

You right Pdiddy,
I didn’t realize they signed him to that large of Contract, good for him, he’s a solid player, a good locker room guy and does a lood of charitable work around the City..
back to sqaure 1.. I think the Eagles will bring in 1 Vetrean LB, maybe a FB and Safety and that’s about it for this Free Agency.. They will address most of their needs thru the Draft and probably try to trade 2-3 Players or package these players withsome picks to move up in the draft..(Samuel,Tapp,Justice all come to mind)
The Quality is good from about 25th Pick to about the #125 Pick and then a big drop off afterwards …

Also,JH, Winston Justice was a 2nd Round Draft Pick from USC in 2006 and not a 1st Round Pick… Where you coming up with him being a former 1st Rounder… Eagles took DT Bunkley with their 1st Round Selection in 2006.. C’Mon , get your act together…

Evan Mathis is out testing the market and the eagles are allowing him to because they want to know his worth according to other teams. Depending on the price he may or may not be back with this team. To be frank , i dont think he returns, this is just my gut feeling, could be wrong tho.. Someone gives him a boatload of money that the birds wont pay him and they ll be forced to go elsewhere, maybe not signing someone off the open market but plugging someone in from the current roster..

I dont know what the eagles will do with Shady, honestly I would wait if i were them because his stock is really high right now and could command a ridiculous amount of money.. he would actually set the market for RBs with his deal.. also depending on what Matt Forte gets may determine it as well.. time will tell.. but since im not them I would sign McCoy now because there is a strong strong possibility that Lesean holds out this upcoming camp if he doesnt have a new deal. You heard it here first..

Reports are that Mario is officially leaving Buffalo tonight with no signed contract in hand, no deal in principle.. He said that he has “other places to visit”…

Not tonight.. my previous report wasnt correct. Mario will remain in Buffalo and plans to return back to the teams facility in the am.

My thought: Not very wise for mario to sign with the bills. Theyre shaky at QB and they always find a way to lose games down the stretch… hes beeter of going to a sure fire contender.. like the eagles, jets, bears, pats etc etc.. but looks as if he may sign with buffalo but anything can happen.. stay tuned.

JH, Mario Williams is expected to get offered the richest contract ever for a defensive player by the Bills who are desperate or someone else…Why would you want the Eagles to offer this guy a contract like that. He is injury prone and IMO has been a disappointment as the 1st overall pick…He is very good but not a great player. If he is looking for money like that I want no part of him. I was really hoping for Red Bryant who is just a huge monster but he resigned. I just don’t think the EAgles will do much with the DE position.

And BTW, for whatever its worth, Jeff Mclane tweeted that Phillip Hunt is up to like 260 and is looking much bigger…MAybe this guy can come in and be a solid role player this year for some depth
