Reports: Eagles Close To Signing Trent Cole To Extension

According to numerous reports by both CSNPhilly.com and Philly.com, the Eagles are close to signing defensive end Trent Cole to a similar three-year extension much like the one they just inked right tackle Todd Herremans to yesterday.

Cole and Herremans share a lot of things in common in that both were mid-round picks who have blossomed for the Birds.  Cole had an injury-plagued 2011 season, but he still got to double digits in sacks, 11.5.

Cole will continue to be teamed up with Pro Bowl left end Jason Babin to form one of the best pass-rushing pair of defensive ends in the league.

Clearly, the Eagles free agent strategy so far has been simply to sign some of their top players to extensions.

He wears down mid season and I believe we need to get a new right D-end in here to give him some competition because his time is really almost up I.M.O.

Dont like the move at all. He is a 8 game a year player before his annual dissapearing act. Dont understand the rush or urgency to resign Cole. There are Babins and Mario Williams available every year. Cole has been on the decline every year for the last 3 years. I cant recall 1 game changing sack he had this year.

WR Robert Meachem signs with the Chargers 4 Year $25 Million Deal

CB Carlos Rogers Resigns with the 49ers
CB Cortland FInnegan signs deal with the Rams and are apparently close to landing DE/DT James Jones from the Titans as well to reunite them with Fisher & CO… (Rams did release DE James Hall and DT Fred Robbins who are Veteran players who coupld probably help someone on a rotational basis)
Redksins signs 5 Year $42.5 Million Deal with $20 in Guaranteed $$$ and a $11in bonus . They also signed under the radar Free-agent Josh Morgain who is an up and coming possesion/intermediate WR who had 2 pretty good seasons with the 49ers and then was injured early last season and missed 12 games in 2012.. Could be a real 3rd Down type of Target for RGIII

WR Reggie Wayne re-signs with the Colts which was surprising..
Many thought that with Dolphins trading WR B Marshall to the Bears that theye would come in to sign WR R Wayne, TE D Clark in preparation to sign MAnning

WR B Marshall by the way was traded for 2 3rd Round Picks (1 in 2012 and 1 in 2013) to the Bears which sounds like Steal for the Bears though Marshall has had offf-the field/maturity issues but gets to reunite with QB J Cutler..

I think it’s great that the team is extending their own players but I think they need to sign Plaxico Burress before another team signs him. We need a 6′ 5″ red zone receiver

I know we’re all a little bummed that we’ve been talking about free agency since the end of the season and so far, it’s been extremely anti-climactic, but if you look at all the teams making big moves in free agency this year, there is a common theme among them all; none of them made the playoffs last year. To go a step further, these teams were terrible last year. At the end of the day, the best teams (Steelers, Giants, Patriots, Saints, Packers, etc) are ALWAYS quiet in free agency. Although it’s not very exciting, I’m kind of glad the Eagles are taking care of their own. Continuity is huge in the NFL. I think if they can just get a guy like Tulloch or Fletcher, we’ll be good going into the draft.

Umm, Cole had 6 sacks in his final 5 games last year. He had two huge sacks against Dall and Mia to kill drives in the 2nd half of those games. Cole has more sacks in his last three years than any other three year stretch in his career. Last year was the first time he looked fresh late in the season and you guys are talking about this 3 year extension being a bad thing.

Go look at Kapeida’s snap count break down over the years and you’ll see why Cole wore down. He was playing by far more snaps than most. Last year was the first time he played a reasonable amount of snaps. The new Dline rotation will save a few years on the back end of his career. Good move to take care of your own home grown talent first in Cole and Herremans before paying for someone else’s prime players.

KUDOS to Trent Cole! Gonna pass Clyde Simmons this year and will probably end up only behind Reggie White in Eagles sack totals.

To BTC, I am not bummed for I was not expecting alot of activity this Free-agency period.. The Teams that made the Playoffs don’t have as many holes or weaknesses therefore are not goign to pursue too many in Free-Agency..
Teams like Ravens,Steelers,Packers,Patriots & Giants typically don’t enter the Free-Agency Sweepstakes which is probably part of their success where they build thru the Draft, then add a few pieces, work the undrafted lists and just plain do a better job of coaching and developing talent that best suits their schemes and philosophy which is why they are competitive year in and year out and the Eagls found out the hard way when you add 6-8-10 New Free-agents plus 6-8-10 new Draft picks that it’s hard to build team chemistry and team trust with 20 new players on your roster.. Last Season was proof positve of this ….
But look at 49ers, they are making some moves signing WR Moss, CB Parris Cox and re-signing CB Carlos Rogers, appears to me they are bein agressive in adressing their needs..

As long as we are in the mode of signing our players, I say GET MATHIS SIGNED.

-Look for an experienced vetreran LB.

-Maybe go after Plax at the right price.

-Look for a Free Safety in FA.

-Get ready for the draft.

-Look at extending Shadey and work on longer term DJax deal.

I have to wonder what D-Jax thinks about all this. Eagles working quickly to sign guys like Cole/Herremans while virtually leaving him out in the cold.

I just don’t understand.

Are they trying to send him and the rest of the players a message?

schiller

March 14, 2012 10:06 am

birdo – I guess that’s a reasonable question to ask, but “out in the cold” with close to 10 million this year? You should slap yourself for even saying that. He’s making 9 mil + this year, and will get another pay day at least that much next year unless his career is over, in which case he’ll have a lot of money, fame, and a life ahead of himself.

Boo FRICKIN Hoo.

He played poorly last year on his own account, he even admitted it. And he needs to mature. Why are you still hot and bothered about it?

I think D-Jax is content knowing he’s guaranteed $9.4 MIllion in Salary for 2012.. Then has an opportunity to be a true “Free-Agent” and get the kind of deals that V-Jax/Colston and others are getting.. This couldn’t play out any better for him and his agent … There is little incentive for him to accept a long-term deal with the Eagles unless he truly wants to remain and play his career in Philly which maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t..
Since they Franchised him, there is no rush and have until late August to make a long term deal with him…Take care of other teams needs, I am not sure I understand why he would be concerned Birdo and about to make 5 times what he’s earned the last 4 Years…

Bucs Sign Guard C Nicks to a 4 Year $47.5 MIllion (with $31 in guranteed $$) which is insane for a Guard. TB Bucs also signed under the radar and very good CB Eric Wright along with WR V Jax & MLB Lofton , so you would have to think the TB BUcs with new HC Schiano are making some nice moves even though they overpaid for all of them….
The Eagles Front Office probably does like the numbers that Nicks received for this just increased Mathis’s value by a few million over the terms of whatever deal they are discussing..

greenfan
greenfan
March 14, 2012 10:34 am

Agreed Pman…..this will raise Mathis’s asking price. $31 million guarenteed is crazy for a Guard. TB was so far under the cap, they are spending money like crazy. I like Schiano, and think that team underperformed for Morris last year…another NFC team getting stronger.

Franchise Tag is what it is. Players want a long term commitment period. The money is good at 9.5 million, but if they get a career ending injury…..which Jackson is one concussion away from, it’s over for him. That 9.5 mil or whatever he’s getting will be it for him.

I’m not saying thats chump change, but in a time where tens of millions of dollars are being thrown around to play football, you would think a guy in his prime that is one of the faces of the NFL would want some of that pie.

The Franchise Tag is universally looked at by the players in a negative light because their is no gaurantee to getting paid AFTER that year is up.

If Jackson plays in midnight green this year, he’s going to get paid that is great…..but anyone that thinks hes going to go out there and ball harder than he ever has before at the WR position with HIS size is fooling themselves. He’ll probably dog it worse than he did last year if he knew he didn’t have any gaurantee from the team that he will continue to collect a paycheck after the 2012 season.

schiller

Paulman, It is true that most of the teams spending big this year so far are teams that did not make the playoffs and who have a lot of holes…However, That is exactly what the Eagles are. The Eagles are not GB or NO or NE or even BAlt. They were a bad team last year with some really bad players who were starting for them over the period of the season. IT would be a major mistake for the Eagles FO to just assume they don’t need a quality free agent at the linebacker or safety spot (even the corner spot if you ask me)

No granted it hasnt been even 24 hrs of free agency yet, and most of the guy that are gone I knew the EAgles wouldn’t be players for anyway. Tulloch is still out there do the EAgles prove me wrong and finally show some value in the position by signing the best one in the open market? I doubt it but well see what happens soon.

I really wanted Red Bryant here tho, that guy is huge and would be a plug on the line with jenkins in this wide Nine shit

pheags88

March 14, 2012 11:47 am

Again, I would rather have an A draft on defense than a big splash in FA. But Reid has shown he cant even draft a C level draft on defense in the past 6-7 years so I think we need at least one stud in FA at linebacker or Dline…to be playoff worthy this year.

BTW, screw Carl Nicks or overpaying a lot for MAthis…give me ben grubbs and you got the best line in the league.

Signing Tulloch, Plax, and Tolbert would make this team MUCH BETTER. and would cost all together what Nicks prolly just got

Pheags,
Here’s the issue, It’s not what you, I or other fans think, I strongly believe that the Eagles Front Office & Coaching Staff believe that they are not very far off (I am not saying that I agree or disagree) But this Franchise thinks and has publicly stated that they are close and only need a few tweaks here or there and if they protect the ball better, that they will be in the thick of the playoff race , so for the Fans who were expecting some big action or big names this Free-Agency, it’s very unlikley to happen which has been very consistent theme in what GM Roseman/Coach AR have stated all off-season that they have a very talented roster who are all going to work hard with a full off-season workout regimen and be a better team for it….
This is what Coach AR and GM Roseman have stated numerous times

Actually Vinnie the Birds traded Justice & our 6th round pick to Indy for their 6th round pick….we moved up about 13 places.

Paulman, no doubt thats true about the FO. And thats prolly the reason why we have no SB. Making big mistakes on personnel on this team will happen to everybody…however just man up and admit it and fix it the next year instead of just keep doing the same thing in throwing the same below average players out there the following year after year to just fail again and again.

BUgsy Tolbert would be a beast here and actually perect for Reid since he can basically do it all. The back up RB spot needs to be sured up. If Shady went down for a couple of games Tolbert could easily handle the load…I think the problem is that if you bring Tolbert in or a guy that will command some millions…The Eagles know Shady will have a problem with it. I really think Shady will hold out if he doesnt get his new deal.

And Paulman, Yes it does not matter what most fans like us think…however, when you think about we can be pretty smart sometimes…We knew McNabb was done years ago yet they kept him here too long…everybody outside of Philly told us we were stupid (didnt Deion say that was the worst trade ever i believe)..all we heard was be careful what you wish for Eagles fans blah blah blah…Yea well they were clearly wrong. Same thing when we were begging for WRs and we finally got TO then all we did was go to the SB that year.

I think they will add a MLB & FB (there have no proven FB on the Roster)
I do like RB Michael Bush but I don’t see the Eagles paying much for a back-up RB who will see limited action.. but Bush would be great for short yardage/red-zone to help save McCoy from taking too many hits in my opinion..

Two of their own down, and 2 to go who aren’t necessarily their own in Mathis and Landri. Unless these two guys price theirselves out of here, it would be really wise to get deals done with them. Derek Landri isn’t a sexy name, but when he’s in the other teams backfield MORE than any other player on the defese, leading the team in TFL, and played about the least amount of snaps, that speaks volumes. I couldn’t believe they cut Landri in the fist place, and they had a horseshoe up their butt in getting him back. Then to be as dissruptive and productive as he was, what more do you need to see? And Mathis now, in over 1,200 snaps, hasn’t given up a sack. And that’s him downfield blocking for Shady too. The guy always had talent as his 3rd round selection out of Alabama shows, and he was actually graded out as the top G in the NFL by Pro Football Focus. And Jaws said he watched every snap of his this past season and he was by far the best G he’d seen. And with these two you KNOW what you’ll get. How many FA’s came here and didn’t play as well as they had earlier? Why take a chance and role the dice, especially when you don’t have to? Neither of these guys are highlight reel players with big names, but when the balls snapped, your glad they’re on your team

Last year was the first time he played a reasonable amount of snaps. Quote from the Latin king. I wonder why the Eagles didn’t address this in the last eight years? Winston Justice was traded along with a sixth round pick for a sixth round pick. I guess our new offensive line coach is not as enamored with WJ as Juan was. If you read his eagles bio Winston Justice has developed into one of the most dependable offensive lineman on the Eagles
