Evan Mathis Is Thrilled To Be An Eagle

We had some news being made by the Eagles today and it involved their offensive line.

Eagles starting left guard Evan Mathis had a news conference this afternoon and he let everybody know that he was thrilled to sign a long-term deal with the Birds.  This means the same offensive line which Michael Vick played behind last season will remain intact.

“I’m thrilled to be back with this organization,” he said. “I love the things Jeff Lurie, Howie Roseman and Andy Reid have done here and the team they’ve built … I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Mathis is a great fit for offensive line coach Howard Mudd and his use of smaller, quicker and more athletic offensive linemen.  The journeyman surprised the Birds with level of play a year ago, so it was a good move to keep him here.  He does a great job as a pulling guard and is quite a technician when run or pass blocking inside.
The Eagles signed former Bird Mike Gibson, who plays both the center and guard positions.  He’s been with the Seattle Seahawks the last couple of years.  Gibson was drafted by the Eagles in the sixth-round in 2008.
They also signed Steve Vallos another journeyman center/guard.  These two signings were made to establish more depth in the interior of the offensive line.

Plax would be a great addition to the Eagles for the right price. He had 8 TDs last year and despite his age, I would think he would actually be a bit better this year. Also, Vick is much better than Sanchez.

I would SIgn Burress at $1.5 Million with incentive $$$ for Recpetions,Yards and TD’s.. Maybe have another 500K in Incentive numbers for a total package of $2 Million, but no more than that… Maybe a $3.5 Million for 2 Years is what I would offer to keep him motivated

This may be the best Off-Season the Cowboys have had in 5 years.. Jason Garrett is getting rid of the dead wood and overpriced players from their roster..
and don’t forget about their hiring of new OL Coach/OC Bill Callahan who is a no nonsense type of Coach… Cowboys will be reckoned with in 2012

Tebow can stay with Broncos and learn under Manning, get in some Wildcat/REed-Zone PAckages, Maybe even play as a FB?HB down inthe Red-Zone.. Let’s see how Manning takes a hit before everyone thinks he’s able to play at his old MVP Level.. Broncos let QB Brady Quinn walk and really have no other QB is on their Roster… Bronco’s should keep Tebow and see what he can learn from practicing/watching Manning, it surely couldn’t hurt his development..

Coach AR actually will have little to do with the Success of the 2012 Eagles..
It’s about the Players stepping up and performing from Vick manning up and playing some good ball, and it’s about the others on Offense like D-Jax/Maclin/McCoy/Celek doing the little things to help the Team win and not be as concerned about individual Stats

Paulman I dont think thats the route the Broncos want to go in. I think they wanted to get out of Tebownation and what better way than to do it by bringing in Peyton Manning. Keeping him would only add more heat to the fire. From this point on all we will hear is Tebow vs Manning. I dont think the Broncos want that therefore adding him to the trading block sounds more like a move Fox Elway wants.

The Eagles FO seems to have learned allot from last year with all of the major signings being of in house players thus far. Their focus seems to be on chemistry and continuity. I don’t expect them to make a big FA move until they take care of McCoy. The fact that they didn’t make a major go at Landry is what makes me believe this because had this been last year we would have signed him instead of letting him go to the Jets. With the exception of MLB I get the feeling they are looking more towards the draft than FA. We’ve got a ton of picks in a pretty solid defensive draft class. I say this… If the Eagles get the FA MLB they truly want (if they truly do want one) like Tulloch and the other usual suspects then the 15th pick is going to be spent on a DT (Poe maybe???). If they get someone like Fletcher or the other guys that have been mentioned as lesser potential prospects then I think this might be the year we get a MLB in the first round. I personally hope we acquire a good MLB through FA and take a DT with 15 and then get Mychael Kendricks in the 2nd round… that would be friggin’ awesome!

JAKEDOG – I love your post…

I loved this team so much I use to rationalize that somehow this year would be different under Andy Reid.

This Eagles team will make the play-offs for sure. Reid always gets the team going after a bad season. He’s a little more focused.

But in the end Andy Reid just does not have the moxy needed to guide a group of men over the hump to the NFL Championship.

I think the defensive coordinator not withstanding, the wide 9 is not a championship defensive scheme and that is one of the reasons Spags passed on the pitiful offer that Reid made him.

During Andy Reids tenure we have had…

Our 2nd best defensive coordinator of all time Jimmy Johnson (Buddy Ryan)

Our best safety of all time: Dawkins

Our best cornerback tandem: Troy Vincent & forgot his name (tall notre dame guy)

Our best tackle tandem: Runyan & Tra

Our all time best QB: McNabb

Our all time best guard: Shawn Andrews (yes he was dominate before he hurt his back)

Our 2nd and 3rd best backs of all time: Westbrook & Shady (wilbert 1st)

Our most dominate WR – TO

Our all time best kicker: Ackers

Yet… nothing but loses in the NFC championship game AT HOME.

To perenial loser TAMPA BAY. A team with no championship history. Whose fans use to put bags over their heads.

As much as many of us complain about the front office, the best talent in Eagles history has come through the door during the Andy Reid era, and for that I give him all the credit. But his lack of flexibility in making halftime adjustments and his lack of calm under pressure means that he can’t win a superbowl.

Belichek looks concerned and thinking in a close game.

The Giants coach looks frustrated or angry.

Put the camera on Andy Reid and he looks nervous. Scared even.

Now that I have had time to get over the sting of Jeffrie Loser letting Andy Reid come back for a 14th season, it was probably a good idea. So when you finally fire him, the pitiful excuse of a lockout will be off the table.

Losers always find an excuse.

Winner just do it.

They keep failing and making adjustments to get better.

Like Edison, they don’t view their failures as failures but learning experiences on their way to winning.

Keeping a man that could not do in 13 seasons what most Superbowl winning coaches do in 4 or 5 seasons is ridiculous.

No dangerous kick-off returner. (unless you count reno mahe)

Trotter showed the value of a good hitting linebacker, but the Eagles don’t seem to be able to get another one.

Programs like Alabama had winning coaches after Bear Bryant.

But not championship coaches. So the FIRED their winning coaches, because anything short of a championship program was unacceptable.

Kentucky basketball FIRED tubby smith who won a national championship but had settled into just winning. Kentucky is back to winning National championships again.

All the Steeler coaches have won a Superbowl.

The Giants have won Superbowls with different Coaches.

Greenbay multiple coaches won superbowls.

Cowboys multiple coaches.

49ers multiple coaches.

Some organizations simply demand a championship program.

Not just a winning program.

But to listen to some of the pansies on this site, we are just asking too much to demand a superbowl.

Well being made the laughting stock of the NFL for hiring an offensive line coach to be a defensive coordinator was the last straw.

Andy Reid please reference Cee Lo Green’s biggest hit. The clean version.

*Eagles Update*
-Not appearing that Plaxico to the Birds will happen. According to two sources in the know, there is dwindling interest from the Eagles and both asked the question, where would you put him in the order of wrs? He would have to play special teams and they dont see Plaxico wanting to do that. So Plaxico to Philly isnt looking like its going to happen..
-Tebow to Philly will be looked at by the Eagles.

My Thoughts- Sad news if true about Plaxico.. i would put plaxico as my #2 or 3 and not make him play special teams.. cmon hes 35yrs old.. they said plaxico wouldnt be okay with being a redzone wr only too.. i recall in jerome bettis last 2 years, he was a redzone rb only and they ended up winning the SB his last year (the steelers) so it can happen but it may not happen.. Tebow to philly would bring too much negative attention even though bad press is good press, i think the birds are trying to fly under the radar this year and stay out of the public eye after last years “dream team” fiasco started up by exiled QB vince young… do i want tebow on my team? Yes i do. I want the birds to trade for him and allow him to play behind vick and learn the offense.. there would be packages for him specifically, and in the redzone he would be a unstoppable force.. i want the birds to look into this winning QB and trade for him.. watch tebow be the one to win us a championship, not jaws not randall not don not kolb not vick, but tebow.. would be something if any of this ever happen..

bsm…I feel your frustration man. I agree with you that this should be a playoff team since they are bringing back the entire offense. But an average defense and mediocre STs with suspect coaching (in game time) does not make me feel that this team can make a deep run.
They really are dillusional about their defense. And they are putting lots of stock in the late season preformance. Those four teams had no offense, no QB and no running games to speak of. Our run stats on D were terrible until those last four games and then we finished looking ok because those four teams couldn’t run to begin with and then fell way behind and had to abandon any running game they had. The run defense still sucks. Fool’s gold that Reid is apparently lining up to buy.
The pass rush was the only real strength of this defense. And even that was over rated. No sacks against the terrible Bears O line? Really? No pressure? They had lots of sacks in some games and then little pressure in others. Their pass rush is inconsistent as ever. And we were bad with take aways. For a team that had more sacks and hurries than almost any other team in the league, why were there no take aways? So the success of the D line is actually relatively hollow. The take away stat is weak overall but in light of the pressure applied, the take aways were horrendous.
The coverage will be better. Nnamdi will be better with a coach that has a clue. Nate Allen will over achieve if he stays healthy. DRC will be fine if he starts. But they have to get rid of either DRC or Assante because they are useless in the slot so it makes zero sense to have all three corners. Coleman is not going to get better. He is only ever going to be an average player whether he gets ten FULL off seasons or not. Thats not going to make a difference and the same goes for Jarrett who is just not an NFL starter. But overall I think this is a good secondary this year. Take aways should be up, especially now that Juan seems less afraid to blitz some.
The run defense and LB coverage will be our undoing in the post season. Teams will play ball control and blitz the hell out of Vick to disrupt the offensive flow. They won’t be ready for it. And we lose a competitive game in the second round of the playoffs.
So unless they start doing something to make the run defense (i.e. LBs & DTs) better and Vick gets much better in blitz recognition and hot reads, they will not get too far. And the receivers need to recognize the damn blitz too. Let’s not hang this all on Vick. The line can handle it. Vick is getting better. But the receivers suck at difusing the blitz and that has to get better. Their WR coach sucks too by the way. But no one ever mentions how weak he is.

Kind of consistent with their thinking. Plax would help the Eagles now, and you can make a GD adjustment on special teams to cover up for him being the 3rd WR. Tebow will be no help in the near future, but that is the guy that they are interested in. He makes zero sense here. This offense needs a true passer and he is not that guy. He doesn’t have the arm strength or the accuracy.

Speaking of LBs and DTs, they need three upgrades in this area and so far they have done nothing but re-sign Dixon. That may help but Washburn would have to use him. He was nicked up all through camp last year so a full off season to learn the wide nine should benefit him IF he can stay healthy. Health always seems to be an issue for Dixon though. I really don’t see the harm in signing Fat Albert. I mean the reality of the situation is this. Even playing with half ass effort, he plays the run better than any DT on this team. For that alone, he is worth a look in a couple weeks once he realizes no one is shelling out millions for him ever again unless he can shows that he can play again. Other than that, there is nothing in FA. But I would like Landri back if they don’t want to pursue Fat Albert.
As far as LBs go, I am not screaming for Tulloch or Lofton. I would have been fine with Conor. Hawthorne would be an improvement as well. Lawson could help. I just want one good LB in FA. I am not looking for a star. But all the scrap heap can give you is competition. Leber could not improve that position. These one and two star FAs will not benefit them. They need a guaranteed starter. They can get a SAM in the second or third round, but there is only one MIKE that can help us as a rookie and it doesn’t look like he will be there at this point. SO, DT, SAM or MIKE needs to be addressed with a FA. Just one would be fine. Two would be better. But please, I would settle for just one. PLEASE!!!!!

If all the Eagles do is draft a LB early that can be a starter, I don’t know that this will be enough to improve the defense a great deal. They have four picks in the first three rounds. I am positive one of these will be a LB no matter what they do in FA. But one rookie SAM LB will not solidify the defense. And if they pick the wrong guy again, the D is screwed. Even if they get someone pretty decent, it is too little if the DTs are going to be the same and Chaney is going to play in the middle. Now I think they will likely draft a DT in the first so they will probably get both a DT and a LB in the first four picks. But these are rookies. How much is the DT going to play? Is he going to take snaps from Patterson? Or are they going to make the kid ride the bench behind a guy that has been nothing more than average and durable throughout his seven year career. They tend to be too loyal to certain veterans. That is what concerns me about a frist round DT. I don’t know how much they let him play. My hope would be Wash has most say on this because I think he is going to put the guys out there that play best and not the guy that is a favorite.

PLEASE, stop with the Plax & Haynesworth crap. Plax is not going to replace Maclin. What are you going to do play Maclin on ST’s? Come on. You are not going to waste $$$ on a 35 years old WR, to just play him in the red-zone. Haynesworth is not better than what we have. I’d rather have a healthy Dixon, & for them to draft Poe, Brokers, Still, or Worthy. Haynesworth is a fat, lazy, waste of space, cancerous, pig, in which I want ZERO parts of. No “k” in “panic” Schiller, your slipping..
I think the Eagles Front Office believe that even with an 8-8 Team, with a full off-season and improvemnts in the Schemes,Coaching and better Seasons from their Star Players (Vick,D-Jax Maclin & Asmo) ..That the Eagles will be a Playoff Team and then anything can happen..
I still sense a feeling and attitude of “Denial” from the Ownership to the Front Office to the Coaching Staff and yes, even to many Players and Media, that the Eagles are a Good/Playoff Team and if they simply cut the Turnovers down and get a full Off-Season of Workouts, that they will be in thick of Playoff Race…
I don’t buy into the Coroporate Eagles stance.. I simply believe that the Eagles are not as good and talented as they think they are and that their Roster is above Average and their overall Coaching is Average.. I see many Teams in the NFC Improving their Rosters, Upgrading their Talent and have Superior Coaching like the 49ers,Packers Saints & Giants and then look at Teams like the Lions,Redskins,TB Bucs, Panthers,Seahawks,Cowboys & Cardinals who are out there at least adding talent to improve their teams chances …Meanwhile I see the Eagles and Falcons both sitting still and not improving their rosters with any outside, addititional talent…Let’s see how it works out…

March 20, 2012 11:09 am

DCar…..first on Plax. You don’t need another WR on STs. So forget that he can’t play STs. Also, he helps you on third downs as well as the RZ. I bet he can pick up a blitz better than the guys we have. Our WR coach apparently doesn’t stress blitz recognition, while I’m sure in Pitt and NYG, Plax learned this in his career. Now do I want to give him 3-4 million for forty catches and six TDs? Absolutely not! But I would give him up to two million to convert twenty first downs I would not have gotten and to turn 5 FGs into TDs. Thats twenty extra points! Thats at least two, maybe even up to 3-4 wins. And who knows how many points the converted third downs could be worth? Avant is not that valuable in the way that Plax is. I would take snaps from him to get Plax for a year. We over value Avant. He makes mistakes and drops balls in key spots. Do you remember when Kolb hit Mr Great Hands right in his hands in the end zone on a pass that could have beaten Wash in 2010? I do.
And everything you say about Haynesworth is absolutely true. And Randy Moss was the same thing before he went up to New England five years ago. Sometimes you have to take chances. You need a little luck to win the SB. And Wash getting Fat Al to play a little and keep his mouth shut could be some of the luck we need to come up with a solution where none previously existed. Meaning a DT that plugs up the middle. Cox is not that guy. Cox is Corey Simon at best. That doesn’t greatly improve our run defense if you recall.
And I agree they are dragging their feet on FA. They need to go out and talk to a Hawthorne or a Lawson and get something done before they are left with dogshit like Ben Leber because that is no use to us. And the fix is not all in the draft.
And one more note DCar, there is nothing that can be done at safety. The FA list sucks and so does the draft. And they are not going to pick anyone before the fourth or fifth round so safety isn’t happening. Its Allen and Coleman. Settle in with that idea because its all you got.

Jbird- I agree on your Plax comments, but it doesn’t just have to be 3rd downs for him either. They play 3 WRs all the time. It has to be the right price, but I think that he could be very effective in this offense.

I have to disagree JBird
Haynesworth is toast and has no shot at returning with the Eagles or probably any other NFL Team for that matter..Fletcher Cox is a much different player than Corey Simon.. Cox is longer, leaner and more explosive and penetrating.. Simon was more of a clogger , a stay at home and hold the fort down type of DT.. I would compare a Jerel Worthy/Devon Still to a Corey Simon.. Fletcher Cox is a different animal all together and makes his living pentrating the backfield and plays more like a DE in a DT’s body in my opinion..

March 20, 2012 11:34 am

Paulman…I totally agree with your assessment. Over the last eleven games (post 1-4 start) they were a 10-6 team. Definitely not one bit better than 10-6. And its the same team. Giving raises doesn’t help that. Not giving them could have hurt. But the money didn’t help. Its still a 10-6 team. Or is it?
This year the schedule is brutal. So unless some teams like NO, Det, Pitt and Balt really take a step back, 10-6 might be reaching for this roster. So I would argue that with the same roster against this year’s schedule, they may still be 8-8. Improvements have to come and giving out raises did not make the team better.
And who says Peters and Shady do what they did last year? This is not Anthony Munoz and Waltyer Payton here. Those were career years. You can’t expect that again. They will be good, but I doubt they will be terrific again like last year. And then there are injuries which were not a big factor last year. They need improvements just to break even. Maclin needs to break out (sixty catches will not do) and Celek needs to play well ALL year not just half. Things need to happen for this team to hold their ground. And there really is not improvement hiding on the roster. I challenge anyone to tell me who is going to be a difference maker on this roster next year that did not contribute much last year. Its just not here. They need to get some FAs. Continuity and a full off season will not make this a serious contender if they even contend.

Jbird – haven’t 10-6 teams won the superbowl lately? I see 0 reasons why 10-6 isn’t good enough to win a superbowl.

Also – the same team? You’re saying they won’t sign or draft anyone now? Does the NFL regular season start later today?

And tell, which major changes to their roster did the Packers and Giants make before their SB wins? — don’t waste your effort – there were none.

To Jbird,
DT F Cox would get 20-25 Snaps a game his Rookie Season and be ready to be a Starter in 2013 as C Jenkins plays less snaps.. Mike Patterson had a very strong season last year (probably his best as an Eagle) and I could even envision F Cox taking some snaps at DE on occassions..

Schill…..Come on MAN!! How can you make comparisons to the Giants and Packers. This “win ten games and anything can happen” mentality is EXACTLY why the Eagles have not won anything. They always play for the tournament instead of playing for a title. And don’t dare compare them to the Giants or Packers. Does Vick look like Eli or Rodgers to you??? Apples and oranges bullshit comparison. You made no point at all with that comment.
I’m not saying they won’t sign anyone. Just saying they need to get moving on it and get someone that is a good solid starter in FA BEFORE the draft. And what have you seen the last two years to suggest the draft will add significant impact next year?? Nothing. Even Shady and Maclin were small contributors as rookies. D Jack a little better. But who was the last rookie to come in here and play really great football. The draft is not the answer. It can help incrementally, but its not the answer to making a deep run. They will need a couple FAs to do that and they need to get busy on it.
They need a FA starting LB no question about it. And they really need to address the kick return issue. The defense as it stands is average and the STs are mediocre. And even you (through your green tinted glasses) really can’t challenge that analysis.

Paulman…yeah that doesn’t help me much this year. Thats the whole point. They need to add a couple FAs that can help today. Tomorrow is great, but we need help today and F Cox is not going to give me that in any season altering way. He is a nice player and I would be cool with that pick, but we need a player in FA to improve the starting line up for 2012. If I could have any two of Hawthorne, Lawson, Burress, Ginn, Lofton, Tulloch I would be happy as a pig in shit. Just give me two of those guys. If I could pick I would take Hawthorne and Ginn. I know it doesn’t help the RZ, but I’ll take the run support and field position over a higher TD%.
