Eagles Pro Bowl Tackle Jason Peters Ruptures His Achilles Tendon

Eagles Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters ruptured his Achilles tendon and will probably miss the entire 2012 season.  This is awful news for the Eagles and the only thing worse than getting this news is Andy Reid getting a call from Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy or DeSean Jackson.

Peters has been called the best offensive tackle in the game by numerous NFL experts.  His power and athleticism is unrivaled by other league tackles.

Unfortunately a few weeks ago, the Eagles traded tackle Winston Justice to the Indianapolis Colts for a bag of peanuts.  Reid says King Dunlap will be able to step in and do the job in place of Peters.  Dunlap has gotten better over a number of years, but there’s no comparison between his ability and what Peters is capable of doing.

I know the Birds will try to find a way to get him back for some of the season, but I don’t see how he could get back for any of the upcoming season.

Disaster. Now AR gets to do what he likes best and that is draft an OL in the 1st round.

This really sucks. I just don’t see King Dunlap getting the job done. Very good chance they draft an OT in round 1.

*Eagles News*

I hear Eagles bringing in Bills FA left tackle demetrius Bell in this weekend. Top FA left tackle out there. Son of Karl Malone.

My Thoughts– sad news. He was the best Tackle in the game a year ago and i just knew hed have another breakout year. Keep this in mind, the season is far from starting and a injury like this takes 6 months to heal. He can still come back for the season maybe around the middle of it. So lets not lose all hope for the year. They may bring a guy in the next few days here so if so they wont have to draft a guy high and could go defense all the way.

Bell could be a decent fill in here. I would have a little more confidence in him than Dunlap. Bell went to Green Bay about a week ago, I thought they would sign him but not sure why he is still available. Either way this is a big loss. Prob a good bet Peters starts season on PUP if not IR.

Demetrius Bell is visiting Pitt right now. Philly is afterwards. May not have a chance to sigh him… Marcus McNeil???

Lets just hope he doesn’t sign with Pittsburgh. I have all the confidence in the world that they sign him if he gets here. Bell, I like MUCH BETTER than Dunlap

Well… now we know what the Eagles will want for Asante. Yes this sucks, but there are opportunities in FA and in the Draft. This may alter the Eagles plans, but they are still well positioned to overcome this hurdle. There are a number of positive scenarios under which the Eagles can fill this void. In the past two years the Eagles have made some really good player moves having landed players no one thought we’d get. I’m inclined to wait and see what develops. The positive side to this story is that this could have happen in preseason or worse, the actual season when there would have been very little they could do about it but having happened now give the team plenty of time to address the situation.

Dammmm, I thought we were all set. Well at least this didn’t happen during the season, hopefully we can get someone in FA or the draft, but this really hurts.

“I went in search of a few stats to back this up and I wasn’t disappointed at all. PFT analysed all starting left tackles in the league towards the end of September. So midway through the season and for Bell this was based on 4 starts before the injury. At that point, the Buffalo Bills QB had dropped back 114 times, and Bell had no sacks to his name and just 3 pressures for a pass blocking efficiency rating of 98% which was good for best in the league. ”

if we can get him i thin he can get the job done

THIS TOWN IS REALLY CURSED. NO IF ANDS ABOUT IT. WHAT ONCE WAS THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE NOW HAS A REAL LIVE NEGATIVE VIBE COVERING THE CITY AND KARMA IS COMING BACK TO BITE THE TEAMS OWNERS AND FRONT OFFICES IN THE ASS. DO THE FANS RIGHT, IF IT WASNT FOR US LOVING SPORTS THE WAY WE DO YOU WOULDNT HAVE THE CASH FLOW YOU HAVE.

PLEASE DONT FORGET FELLAS THE EAGLES ARE PAYING PETERS A CRAP LOAD OF MONEY AND HE IS STILL SIGNED TO A CONTRACT AND IF THEY GO AND DRAFT A FIRST ROUND OL MAN THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY HIM FIRST ROUND MONEY AND GIVE HIM FIRST YEARS. BUT WAIT THEY STILL DIDNT PAY SHADY McCOY. IF THAT ISNT A RECIPE FOR DISASTER.

scramz, paying a first rounder at the #15 spot is not a problem at all. they will get a 4 year contract worth $10 million, that’s hardly something to worry about. that’s not $10 mil/year, that $10 mil total, about $2.5/year.

This blows!!! Best O-lineman we’ve had in a long time.
JH, in no way, shape, or form, will he be back midseason. It is a 9-12 month injury for most. He is a 330 lb+ offensive lineman, that needs to use his legs to push off, & back peddle. You do realise that you can’t even fully bend your foot towards your body for 7-10 months, right? NOOO! Of course you don’t. Where do you come up with your idiotic thinking!? He is done for the year, maybe for good here. Sad but true.

There is probably 1 LT in this entire who can start Day #1 and that’s USC matt Kalil who is prjected to go at #3 to the Vikings who have said publicly that they would be willing to listen for offers for this pick.. maybe the Eagles can offer their 1st (#15th) their 3rd (#89) and CB Samuel to move up to #3 whoch stil lmay not be enough..
The other Top OT’s in the Draft ,
#8th Prospect) Riley Reiff from Iowa (6-6 318lbs) is strictly a RT who does not have the athleticism to play LT per most Scouts
#18th Prospect) Jonathon Martin (6-5 312lbs) has some real potential to be a very good LT and may be the most athletic OT in this Draft Class but probably not out of the gate in Year 1 per most Scouts , He only benched pressed 225lbs 20 times and did not have a very impressive Pro-Workout day and there have been some questions about his work ethic/attitude/maturity.. ..

The the other Top OT’s are looked probably 2nd-/3rd/4th Round elections in a very limited OT Draft Pool and 2-3 year Projects.. The Best of the Rest

#32nd) Mike Adams – ( Illinois – 6 7″ 323lbs) Solid rush blocker, but needs work in pass blocking and doesn’t use his size and arm span to his advntage yet
#54th) Zebrie Sanders – (Florida State 6 5″ 320lbs) – Moved from RT to LT his Senior Season and struggled a little bit after a great Junior Season at RT. He ‘s very Smart, Coachable and a well rounded Player..
#71st Bobbie Massie – (Miss State 6-6 316lbs) May be the best athlete outside of J Martin, played on a run-dominated team in Miss State some there are questions about his Pass-blocking skils but is long, lean and alot of Scouts have him rated as the 3rd Best Pro OT Prospect behind Kalil & Martin and ahead of the others and played RT in College and could be a good one under the tutledge of Mudd.. (2nd Round is probably too high and with the Eagles 3rd Round pick now later in the round due to trade with Texans may be too late to get him at #89)
#75) Mitchell Schwartz – (Cal 6-5 318lbs) , Smart, experienced LT who played in a very 51 Games at Tackle for a very Pro-Like System at Cal.. Many scouts have him rated better as a RT or even Guard in the Pro’s due to his lack of Athleticism. he started 35 games at LT, 15 at RT while in College
#84) Brandon Mosley (Auburn 6-6 314lbs) Samrt, tough agressive player who was recruited as a TE for Auburn, but converted to OL his Freshman Season.. Is pretty atlhetic with good foot movement and has some speed to get downfield and make blocks on screens and draw plays, has played in the wide-open pass offense of Auburn so a fast pcae with a lot of passing is not new to him at all..could be a great pick in the 3rd Round..
#103rd) Matt McCants (UAB – 6-6 308lbs) Raw and has only been playing Football since 2008, but has a lot of upside and athletic ability to go with his long reach and natural strength.. With proper Coaching and a good start with his Pro Conditioning and Strenth PRogram, could be a real diamond in the rough per many Scouts.. Projects at RT but could develop into a LT in 2-3 years time
#112th) – Tony Bergstom (Utah 6-5 315lbs) Mature and experienced player with 37 Career Starts at mostly RT,. He did a 2 year Latter Day Saints Mission and will turn 26 in August which has hurt his ranking but is a player who could proabbly come in a play RT from early on but may just not have the upside as other younger, more athletic prospects have)
#121st) Jeff Allen – (Illinois 6-4 307 lbs) Most see him as an Guard at the NFL level due to his shorter arm-span, but a versatile solid player
#133rd) Nate Potter – (Boise State 6-6 303lbs) Very experienced starting LT over 35 games at Boise State and named All-Conference for 2 Straight Seasons . Potter is a little more athletic than people give him credit for and has been a leader on that Bronco OL that plays with a very fast-paced with many no-huddle situations so his conditioning is excellent for a big guy.. Lacks lower body strength and could work on his Straight-ahend rush blocking too.. Reminds manyScouts of Patriots Top pick of Nate Solder from a year ago and was an All-Academic Athlete too so you know he’s a bright kid. (I think he could be a great fit in Mudd’s system.)
#145) Matt Reynolds (Brigham Young 6-5 302lbs) 39 Consecutive Starts and is another player who did a 2 year LDS Mission so he is a little older and will turn 26 this Summer, but is mature, smart, natual leader type who projects as a RT and even a Guard at the Pro-Level

I dont believe one bit only 1 college player can start at LT in the NFL. Hell the Eagles started 2 rookies with no offseason last year. So your telling me King Dunlap would be a top 15 pick in this years draft? He has started for us already. Some players in the 1st round suck and some in the 5th round become starting centers right away. Bell was a 7th round pick wasnt he?

paulman
paulman
April 1, 2012 8:41 pm

Bell was not that good either..
Kalil is stud who can start from Day 1 at LT..
Rieff and Martin are probably RT as most Scouts have stated.. Martin has the athleticism to be a LT but may struggle if he’s trhrown in right away his Rookie Season..
I am not sure what relevance you are making about Dunlap being a 15th pick if he was in the draft,, Dunlap has been with the Eagles for 4 Years now.
Playing interior OL is a whole different program than OT which is why the good ones are at a premium.. It’s like a CB, you are out there 1 on 1 and on an island and amy mistake or poor decision is seen by everyone and usually gives the other team a big play — CB it’s giving up a big pass or a TD, for OT its a sack, fumble, or a loss of yardage on a running play…
This Draft is not very deep at all at the OT Position as in past years..
Wonder if the Eagles have thought about D Watkins at RT and then shift Herremans at LT… Watking played OT in College and was a 2 Year Starter for Baylor..

paulman
paulman
April 1, 2012 9:12 pm

By the way Dag,
I am talking about a Draftee starting at LT from Day 1 at the Start of the Season
for an NFL Team, some of these rookies OT’s may start at RT of by the midddle or end of the Season on poor teams or by neccessity due to injury.. but this is not a very NFL Ready LT Draft pool outside of Matt Kalil.. It just isn’t..
