Maybe It’s Not Recklessness With Michael Vick

I just finished reading  Sheil Kapadia’s Moving the Chains blog on Philly.com.  He wrote an article, “The myth behind Vick’s 2011 injuries”, laying out the circumstances of four injuries which Michael Vick suffered during the 2011 season, which cost him plays on the football field or substantially affected his play.

All the of the injuries occurred while Vick was in the pocket and in the process of completing a pass downfield.

This very important fact directly contradicts the prevailing thinking that Vick gets injures so frequently because of his reckless play.  The facts shoot that claim down during the 2011 season, but I can’t say the same is true in previous years.

The fact that Vick suffered four injuries during the 2011 while completing passes out of the pocket says something completely different but it still doesn’t get the Eagles quarterback off the hook.

The fact is that far too many times he’s been injured, whatever the reason.  Bottomline is that he’s got to stay healthy for the Birds have a good chance to make the playoffs then advance through them to the big prize.

If recklessness isn’t the reason for the frequent injuries then perhaps they tell us that maybe Vick’s body can’t take the constant pounding as well as the other, bigger marquee NFL quarterbacks.

Players get injured for different reasons, but the ones who get injured often are labeled injury-prone and maybe that’s more case with Mr. Vick, than we realized.

It maybe as simple as the guy just has brittle bones.

@ birdo….stated or un-stated, it is the desire of every defense to put the starting qb of the opposing team on the sideline….I doubt that I am breaking any new ground by stating the obvious.

Bottom line…we need for Vick to stay healthy this year. Better line play for an entire year is one way. Better reciever play is another. Vick playing smarter and realizing that sometimes it is a better play not diving for the extra yard and living to play another play.

Maybe its because he’s too small.

Maybe its because he wasn’t wearing a mouthguard when he slammed his head into Herremans. Maybe its because he rarely wears a mouthguard.

I think that concussion in Atlanta with Herrimans accidentially hitting Vick’s head may not have been so severe if Mike had his mouth piece in,—— and Mike Vick may not have broke his ribs running in Arizona but the sandwich hit running like a RB certainly made the injury a multiple 3 game injury

The fact of the matter is that the Eagles have evolved now as a team. The offense should no longer need to score thirty points to win football games and Vick needs to fully understand this. His key to success in 2012 depends on him understanding that every single offensive play is not critical and that it is better to live to fight another down and day.
This offense no longer depends on Vick being the hero. And this is a good thing, because if Vick has to beat Brees or Rodgers toe to toe it is not going to happen. The problem with the Eagles for Reid’s whole regime has been that there has not been enough talent on the team and especially on defense. JJ always had to do more with less and in the big games the lack of talent could no longer be hidden from superior coaches and QBs. This year the team should have a top five defense if all goes according to plans. And this is what it will take to win a championship, not Vick throwing for 4200 yards and running for 800 more.
The Eagles are always going to run into situations where a Steelers/Ravens type of defense is just going to shut them down. Or they are going to face situations where the other team (Green Bay/New Orleans) has even more than their own considerable offensive firepower. To win a title, they will need a defense that can be counted on to hold good offensive teams under 24 points and average offensive teams like the aforementioned Steelers/Ravens down to 17 or less, while at the same time creating turnovers to help out a sometimes sputtering offense with a short field.
If the defense is as good as they hope, Vick needs to be willing to assume the role of game manager as opposed to super star with the understanding that defense and not making mistakes is the key to this team winning a title, not scoring 30-40 points every week. Can he do that? That remains to be seen. But if he wants to win a SB some day he will have to. This team will never be so good on offense that they can just whip people on the scoreboard. AR and MM are not good enough, Vick is not good enough and the supporting cast is not good enough. This team will rack up plenty of yards and points on their way to the playoffs this year. But they will also have their moments where they are mediocre. And in the playoffs they will need to hope their defense is ready to carry them to the promised land because this is not be a truly great offensive team once the competition gets closer in post season play. The offense is ONLY “good enough” to win a title. They are not great and will never be in the conversation with 1989 Niners or 2001 Rams or 2007 Patriots.

Vick needs to learn how to only take hits in the playoffs when you really need and in the 4th quarter of close games.. Honestly, there is nothing wrong with the offense at all and it will be even better this year than last year…

An other thought completely separate is that i think Chris Polk might be able to be an impact player.. He was the best all- round back in the draft and was supposed to be a 2nd round pick. Its strange how he fell since he hasnt missed a game in three years.. and ran 4.45 -4.49 at his proday .. weighing 212 lbs… he actaully reminds me of a better shape jerome bettis..

@Vinnie – I dont think Vick missed any games because he lost a tooth or bit his tongue…wtf does a mouth guard have to do with him missing games…

Bottom line, Vick is the key…he stays healthy the Eagles will have a chance to win every single game…and of course he has to make better decisions, throwing, when to run, when to get out of bounds, when to just throw the ball away…but that being said, we’ve all seen Vick escape sacks and make nothing out of something to extend a drive, that ended up leading to 6 points…its tough fellas, but most def overall the Eagles and us fans need our QB to be on top of his game in 2012.

Vick do not get roughing the passer calls in the pocket or get protected like stiff QB’s. period.

Manning can get inavertly grazed on his helmet and out comes the yellow hankies.

There’s a code amongst refs not to protect Vick even if he’s in the pocket.

So, come on with that claim he hold the ball too long. I’ve seen QB’s hold the ball waiting for their guys to come clean before….now I must admit Vick should know when to give up on a play and throw the ball out of bounds instead of fighting for a few yards on the ground.

He must play with the knowledge that the refs will not call roughing the passer. McNabb got his injuries “in the pocket”.

Randall got his knee tore up …”in the pocket”.

Hell, Brady got his knee tore up “in the pocket”.

So, I’m not going to blame Vick’s mobility for injuries.

THE O-LINE TOOK THREE STEPS BACK.

People keep glazing over the obvious here…if the QB has less than 3 seconds, in many cases, to get rid of the ball the O-Line isn’t doing it’s job. The O-line play hasn’t been great over the couple of years, but last year it was particularly poor. It was responsible for Vick’s injuries and McCoy rarely having a hole to hit. Hopefully an extra year improves it, but it’s looked pretty bad. The only saving grace was players that knew how to improvise when the often broke down.

NFL QBs have an average of less than 3 seconds to make a decision and release the ball. That’s league wide average.

Under Pressure: Splitting Seconds

by J.J. Cooper

When it comes to sacks, quarterbacks often get a free pass. Unless you’re Ben Roethlisberger, few quarterbacks ever get blamed for their tendency to hold the ball too long — the offensive line takes the heat.

Just ask Jay Cutler. Admittedly the Bears’ quarterback has had plenty of problems with a leaky offensive line, but he also has created many of his own problems by holding the ball too long. In the past two years, more than half of Cutler’s 82 sacks came when he held the ball for more than three seconds. His percentage of “long sacks” is sixth-worst in the league among quarterbacks with 200 or more attempts. It’s not just offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s protection concepts and poor offensive tackles that have given the Bears pass protection problems.

Roethlisberger, Michael Vick, Colt McCoy and Joe Flacco join Cutler in picking up plenty of sacks that really shouldn’t be blamed on the offensive line. Every week during the season, Under Pressure will take a look at sacks around the NFL. Since 2009, I’ve been timing each and every regular-season sack in the NFL from the time of the snap to the time of initial contact on the sack. By doing that, we can find which quarterbacks are getting sacked before they get a chance to make their reads, and which ones are holding on to the ball too long.

So how do we determine a quick sack versus a long sack? Over that two-year-stretch, the average time of all sacks is three seconds, but a more accurate representation may be the median time, which currently stands at 2.8 seconds. After all, a couple of extremely lengthy sacks can adjust the average time up, but there is a pretty fixed limit on the lower end of how quickly a sack can happen — there are 64 sacks over the two years that took six or more seconds. There are only two sacks that were recorded in less than one second.

The median sack time has hovered between 2.7 and 2.8 seconds throughout the two years of the tracking.

Unless a quarterback falls down or drops the ball, a sack of 1.7 seconds or less generally involves a rusher coming completely free. On the other end of the spectrum, once a quarterback holds the ball for three seconds or longer, he’s had time to make his drop, survey the field, and work through his progressions. If it takes longer than that, either the play has broken down or the quarterback is trying to buy time because the play has not developed as he had expected it to.

There are limitations involved with just timing the sacks. Ideally it would be better to time each and every pass attempt for every quarterback, but the amount of turn-around time makes that impossible to do on a weekly basis. Doing this would give a better sense of the benefits or downsides of quarterbacks holding onto the ball. And it would give a better sense of how much holding the ball longer affects a quarterback’s sack rate.

While it has not been possible to log each and every pass attempt around the league, over the past offseason it was possible to log the time of pass for all of Steelers pass attempts in 2010. Since Roethlisberger is considered to be prime example of a quarterback who creates big plays by holding the ball and escaping sacks, his statistics are useful.

What was found was that in Roethlisberger’s case, his sack percentage (the percentage of pass plays that results in sacks) goes up significantly the longer he holds the ball. Roethlisberger’s sack percentage doubled when he held the ball for longer than three seconds — seven percent for passes of 2.1 to 3.0 seconds, 14 percent for passes that took between 3.1 and 4.0 seconds. Interestingly, his quarterback rating, yards per attempt and first down percentage all dipped when he held the ball for more than three seconds, so it’s difficult to say that holding the ball longer really pays off for Roethlisberger.

On the other end of the spectrum, when the Colts lost Peyton Manning to a neck injury, they not only lost one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but they also lost a quarterback who could make their offensive line’s potential weaknesses seem to disappear. Over the past two years, Manning has been sacked only 26 times. When you look at sacks that are created by a quarterback holding the ball too long, however, Manning is even more exceptional. No other quarterback can top Manning’s four sacks of three-plus seconds in 1,250 pass attempts (0.32 percent of attempts).

Minimum 100 Pass Attempts (passes + sacks)

But if there is any good news for Colts’ fans, it’s that Indianapolis has replaced Manning with another quarterback who also knows how to get rid of the ball. Of quarterbacks with 200 or more attempts in the past two years, Kerry Collins is second in the NFL in sacks that took three or more seconds (0.80 percent of attempts). Collins may not have Manning’s passing ability, but he should be able to stay out of needless sacks.

Didn’t Eagles RB L McCoy come in 2nd in rushing yards in the NFL Last season.. The Excuses people come up with to protect Vick… He had a poor 1st half of the Season last year.. I support him moving forward for he still gives the Eagles their best chance to win in 2012 but when it’s all said and done in 2012 about this Eagle Team, I don’t want to hear about Nate Allen, Brandon Graham Matthews Jr or Danny Watkins, the Eagles fortunes lie directly on the shoulders, legs and more importanly the brains of Mike Vick.. He has all the God-given Talent that’s required to be a Champion, but no more excuses, it’s now time to get it done in 2012 or the Eagles need to move in another direction at QB and this is about as plain and simple as I can put the 2012 Season …

Vinnie, WTF, keep it short & simple, goodness gracious!
Listen it took more than half the season for the O-line to get any sort cohesion, & by then they got Vick killed. Why do you think most of ripped Reid & Co. all year. If it wasn’t the LB’s it was the Safeties, if it wasn’t the safeties it was the o-line. Their is nothing new or groundbreaking about this. Old story. The line sucked early, he took too many unnecessary hits & he doesn’t know how/ admittedly refuses to slide, or go out straight out of bounds. If it happens again, in which inevitably, he is due for his annual DL visit, the O-line won’t be the blame this time. He needs to go out of bounds & freaking slide.

So like i said SONGS he holds the ball too long, other qbs progress quickly to the next read or check down, the fact that u said u have seen guys hold the ball waiting to come clean blah blah blah, i have too, ive also seen the avengers, and flying monkeys in the wizard of oz, but he holds it too long and hits are extra violent on him on occasion, but if he gets rid of it earlier they dont happen. Every qb holds it longer on occasion, but he does almost every play.
I do agree he gets liberties taken on him, and that doesnt help, but watch the elite qbs and see how fast the ball is out of their hand.

peli
peli
May 8, 2012 7:23 am

Its this simple, they dont mix up playcalling, teams gear up for the pass, vick holds the ball too long, and vick isnt big. Put it all together and it equals vick being injured, a defense that wears down in the second half of the season and games, and for good measure, throw in two wasted timeouts per game. I dont see them ever winning with reid unless he has a change if philosophy. Maybe hes running a 13 yr con, and in a very importamt postseason game when noone expects it he’ ll run the ball on consecutive plays more than once. Shhhhhh dont tell anybody.

vinnietheevictor
vinnietheevictor
May 8, 2012 10:16 am

It boils down to an even simpler equation.

Vick takes unnecessary hits every year.

He is double the league average at taking sacks over 3.5 seconds. If he would just drop to NFL average, he’d cut, himself, 12 unnecessary sacks a year (that’s based on 400 pass attempts)

Now…seeing that Vick takes late sacks at 2x the league avg…I think its safe to assume (and I hate assuming, but what can you do) that he also takes a lot of “last second” hits due to his proensity of taking a long time to make up his mind. Too bad that this hasn’t been charted. How many unnecessary hits is that? 25? 30? Lets go low and say 24- twice his long sacks

Now, Vick scrambles an average of 100x a year. Ho many times does he get punished when he does? 50% of the time? 75%. Lets again go low…50 hits.

So over the course of the year

12 unnecessary sacks + 24 late release hits + 50 scramble hits + small man = trouble.

There’s no onther way to slice it. Here’s a 5′ 10″ 200 lb drippin gwet guy taking at least 90 unnecessary hits every year. (an extremely low estimate)

And we wonder why he gets hurt every year?

This is what happens when you have an “Athlete” playing the QB position and not a true QB..Vick is not and will never be a Pocket/Traditional QB for it’s not his game or who he is and I am ok with this for he brings other dimensions and skills to the Position that many other QB’s can’t, but in realizing this, I also understand that he will incur more hits and unfortunately, more opportunites to get injured, but that’s part of the high-risk, high-reward when you have a QB of M Vick’s skill set playing QB for you and we can all debate until the cows come home on whether he is or isn’t a legitimate QB.. All is know is that he is the Eagles Starter and gives the Eagles their best chance for winning in 2012 with him running the Offense, So as a fan, I support him 100% for I want to see Eagles succeed.. Now if Vick does not play well nad duplicates his errors, turnovers, negative plays like he did the 1st half of the 2011 Season and gets hurt and misses games, then I would think the Eagles will address the QB after the 2012 Season.. Right now, he is the man and I believe he actually will have a very good year..

LOL…Vinnie you are a true clown! The only topic you ever discuss is Vick….are you an Eagles fan? do you root for the opposing defense when the offense takes the field? wish for a big hit on our QB? do you have thoughts about the Eagles team as a whole? do you have an evaluation on the draft? do you expect defensive improvements in 2012? what do you consider the Eagles weakest defensive position? do you have an evaluation about how each individual on the O Line performed in 2011? how about an evaluation about how the O Line adjusted to Mudd’ system?
Get off Vick’s *$%# for once….

Totally agree, all valid points, one thing that the majority actually agrees on!

Writing about Vick is more fun. 2 reasons. 1 its the most important position on the team and will have a much greater impact on W/L then who the strong safety will be. 2 – there are so many people in here on Vick’s nut sack and they get all beserker riled up. How much fun would it be around here if all we did was talk about whether or not our LB can cover TEs?

But ok then. I think the Eagles’ are an improved team over last year. I was not a fan of all the free agent signings and did not buy into the “all-in” hype when it happened. Free agent acquisions don’t have a very good track record in the NFL, and at least take 2 years to acclimate to their new teams.

Much more impressed with what the Eagles’ have done this year.

I wanted the Eagles to come out of the first 4 rounds of the draft with DT, LB or CB and QB. They came out with DT, DL, LB and Qb. Fantastic. Very intruiging players added in later rounds and as free agents, but who really knows.

The front 7 of the D is potentially very very good. I like the D line rotation, but am only cautiously optimistic as there are question marks. They will be playing Cox (a rookie) and Jenkins (injury history) a lot. I hope that holds. The DE’s have potential to be completely dominant (at least in terms of terrorizing QBs) but again there are questions as to how much the rook from Marshall and Graham (off microfracture surgety) can contribute. Without them, Babin and Cole wear down. I think the LB crew is greatly improved.

I am not as sold on the secondary. Love the dumping of Asante, as I despise selfish players like him. Not sold at all on DRC. Lazy. Head doesn’t seem in it, though it is a contract year so he might juice it for one year to get a big payday. Asom says all the right things, but not entirely sold on him. Think he was best player on shitty Raider secondary and that inflated his value. Safety is a complete question mark…no one here knows how that will turn out at all, though I’m not as down on Allen as others in here – I think he can turn into a ball hawk out there.

Secondary weaknesses will be camoflauged if front 7 wreak havok like they have potential to.

On O. I’ve stated many times that the Birds are building something special on the right side of the line. Mathis/Watkins/Herremans all under 30 and have that side set for next 5 years. Everyone so down on Watkins early – stupid. Loved the pick. Don’t sweat on the Cdn boys. He’ll be very solid. Only going to get better. Kelce is solid. Peters injury is going to affect team a lot more than people think. LT 2nd most important player after QB. Maybe Mudd can work some magic, but Buffalo supplying 2 probowlers? Doubtful!

Wrs: Desean is selfish. I would have let him go. Maclin is solid. Love the addition of McNutt, but never expect much from rookie Wrs. He’ll get a year to practice with Foles and the two will step in in 2013. Avant had a down year. Hopefully be back to his mean.. Eagles still haven’t really addressed that both QB and wrs are shrimps and theis affects redzone. Still, do not want anything to do with Plax.

What’s to say about Lesean? Celek is solid.

So there you go. Eagles’ putting together a young team that has potential everywhere. Unfortunately, they’ve got a blind man driving the caddy.

Potentially dominant team isn’t going anywhere with Vick at the helm, despite how much so many of you want to believe that this will be the year. That this time it will be different.
