Report: Eagles Close To Signing Veteran Safety O. J. Atogwe

The Eagles are close to signing veteran safety O.J. Atogwe, who played last year with the Washington Redskins.  It’s common knowledge that the Birds have question marks at the safety position.

Third-year safety Nate Allen looked very good at the OTA’s.  He seems to have all his speed and mobility back, while former ninth-round pick Kurt Coleman is starting beside him.

Coleman is savvy but undersized for an NFL safety.

Atogwe, who is 30 years old, would definitely bring depth to the position. and played 13 games for the Redskins a year ago.  He signed a $26 million deal with Skins prior to the 2011 season after spending six years with the St. Louis Rams.

Don’t put a lot of faith into Otogwe..He’s failed to play a full season the last 3 Seasons in aRow, from Neck, back, knee, ankle to shoulder injuries.. WHen Healthy is pretty good player, but hasn’t been 100% healthy sinc about 2008-2009.. SHould have been able to pick-up his relatively cheaply but would not be surprisd to see COleman beat him out as Starter opposite of NAte Allen..
I would guess to say that Safety J Jarrett’s prospects of lasting in the NFL beyond the 2012 Season is pretty remote as he was just a poor Draft selection ans simply does not have the foot speed or size to play th NFL Game.. and It’s not his fault the Eagles reached 2-3 Rounds ahead of what most conventional wisdom of the Draft Guru’s analysis stated about Jarrett’s prospects …when the Eagles Selected Jarrett in the 2nd Round in the 2011 Draft.. Yo don’t hit on every pick to make such an error in the 2nd Round (50th Overall) is a vert big blunder.. Who cares when you miss with your 5th 6th ROund pick, But your Top 4 Rounds should all be solid players who are NFL Cailber Talent wise

Paulman, you talking about Coleman beating out someone opposite Allen, when it should be Allen challenging to stay on the team. Wasn’t Coleman our best Safety last season?

What’s this job security with bum ass Allen?

A matter of fact this move proves the Eagles are not banking ob Allen playing up to his draft position.

I’ll take Atogwe on crutches before every safety on our team.

Ain’t goingto happen Songs.. Allen is a Startr and Coleman will beat out Otogwe who had a real difficult time picking up the Redskins Schemes last Season.. I am not sure that Otogwe has the smarts to even get on the field and compete with Coleman for the other Starter Spot.. Otogwe is simply insurance in case wither Allen/Coleman gt injured for Jarrett is simply not NFL Caliber and I actually see Safety Tom Nelson outplaying Jarrett but Jarrett will probably get a Roster Spot while Nelson gets released,,

Me neither GMCliff.. I just don’t see him bringing much to the table.. The Redksin dropped him like a hot Patato right after the SEason aftger nearly paying him cloe to $10 Million in Salary and bonus last year as a Free-Agent and he couldn’t even beat out journeymen Reed Doughty of the Skins.. The Skins to their credit did cut him quickly after the Season relaizing they made a mistake..He won’t probably play any Special teams so I really don’t lik this pick-up at all and don’t feel he will be all that good in the lockerroom also..

Next year the Eagles will draft a safety, TJ McDonald (USC) or Robert Lester (Alabama) perhaps. They can’t truly upgrade this year at this point. Every team has weaknesses at one position or another so hopefully Allen and Coleman will be good, not serviceable but good.

EHL, agree with you man…I said I liked the OJ pickup AT THIS TIME. Even though i think his pickup will be no contribution at all since the dude seems like he is done it cant hurt…maybe we get lucky and he actually plays well. who knows..

However like you said the talent pool next year for the safety position is ridiculous (obviously pending the group of guys stay healthy/play well again this year)….There could be like 4-5 safeties that could warrant 1st round grades…

What I think a lot of people are missing is that signing Atogwe is not at all about Coleman, Allen, or Jarret. Not in the least bit. No team carries only 3 safeties, and all we have left is a special teams ace and an undrafted rookie. You can argue about who should start/play where aou want. But bringing Atoagwe is about filling out the quartet, not about the guys who are already here.

paulman

June 20, 2012 10:38 am

Your forgetting about Safeties Colt Anderson and Tom Nelson that are on the Roster. Schiller. If Anderson recovers from Knee Surgery, he’s your 4th Safety/Ace Special Teams Player, If Anderson does not recovery enough to play.. Then Nelson and Atogwe battle it out, but Atogwe hasn’t played SPecial Teams in years..

Atogwe should have never just went for the big dollar contract to begin with. Since he came from a 4-3 his responsibilities and pick-ups, shifts etc. were all going to be different, so it makes sense that he just wasn’t fitting into Washington’s “retooled” defense. The deal isn’t done yet, but if the Eagles do sign him it will help out significantly. Considering Coleman was constantly out of position or getting burnt or trucked my guess is he’s the more likely of the two to hit the pine. Although his interceptions are something to consider it’s not enough to make up for everything else. Also and maybe even more importantly with the LB not really getting much bigger a soft middle is again another possibility. I would like to see Brian Rolle and/or Keenan Clayton play safety, but there’s no guarantee either of them can effectively play that roll at the pro level. The Eagles need to beef up behind that D-Line without loosing tons of speed and Atogwe could assist there.

Ray Ray Armstrong 6-3 4.47…… and hits like Ronnie Lott, covers like Rod Woodson …..he goes in the top half of the second round because of off the field issues.

Paul, read my post. I mentioned them, not by name, but by qualifications for being worse tham OJ. You don’t ask if Otagwe is better than Coleman/Allen/Jarret, you ask, is he better than what else you got. The answer is probably yesk and then once he’s on the team, camp happens, and THEN you decide on what to do for the season. If you sign OJ now, it poses no risk and definitely upgrades your options. Period. But it says nothing about the top 3 guys already on the team. Jarrett, Coleman, and Allen could have played like 3 ed reids last year, and signing Otagwe now would STILL make sense.

I would rarther see what ANderson/Nelson can bring to the table and have been in the Eagles systerm.. Atogwe I think will be like a Sean Jones.. Just a solid player who will struggle picking up the Defensive Schemes and just not the player he was 3-4 Years ago when Atogwe was a a very good Safety.. Theow him in to the mix and see what’s happens but anyone expecting to see him Starting over Allen./COleman ain’t happening.. He’s an emergency body and if Jarrett can develop this SUmmer which is a quesiton
?? then Atogwe probably even doesn’t make the final 53 Man Roster..

June 20, 2012 1:24 pm

well Paul, he’s still worth signing. There’s plenty of reps to go around in training camp/preseason so you ‘rather’ing to see what those other guys can do is irrelevant. Having Atogwe in camp will not prevent you or anyone from seeing what they can do.

GF – nice sarcasm! Camilli was signed becuase Dobrenos couldn;t participate in the early OTAs due to the new CBA – they lloked at him – but him #55 on speed dial if Dobrenos gets hurt…

Been saying for months now – why not bring in a vet safety for competition.. if he is Page or Marlin whatever – who cares – he gets cut.. no risk here – if anyone knows a better safety on the the market now (Pman GMC, Jon Hart – you guys seem to know all these guys) then complain about the pick up..

Lets also remember that sometimes players get hurt duirng camp/preseason – so a little bult in depth is not a bad thing.

Oh and of interest to probably only me – the guy has a rep as a ball hawk/FS type player – if I am not mistaken, Coleman and Jarret are more SS types? I realize the birds will interchange at times to hide coverages.. but not seeing how this pick is a reflection on Jarret –

All I know is that the Safeties on this team are “ASS” and no Eagles fan is in any position to say a Safety such as Atogwe is not up to snuff.

Look at what we had last season at that position!!!!!!

Atogwe is not the best there is but he’s leaps and bounds better than the Safety on the Eagles which is not a hdd task.

Fellas the Safety pool for free agency and the draft was poor this year. This is a good pick up considering there wasn’t a ton out there. I believe our safeties will be fine. You can’t have pro bowlers at every position, and I think Coleman is actually going to be very good this year.

June 21, 2012 12:13 am

Pdid – you crazy – clearly you need an all pro or a first round draft pick at each and every postion or else you are cheap and a money hoarder and trying to sell the fine fans of Filly on a garbage product… you are settling…

just kidding – I too think the safeties will be fine – course, depends on what your definition of ‘fine’ is.. then again – trying to get the class ass clown to actually give a definitive answer as to what would be acceptable ‘team’ defense is next to impossible… its like defining ‘obscene’ we will know it when we see it .. until then – he bitches..

SONGSRME2

PDiddy….Coleman was the best safety on the team until the Eagles signed Atogwe and I think he’ll be starting by weak 5 when our record falls to 2-3.

He should start over garbage Allen who gets faked out of position and rolled over regularly, but Reid will stick with the bum until it’s evident the beginning games were lost with Nate Allen as the key liability.

Paste it!

I’m the same guy who told everyone here that garbage ass Kolb would have a 2 game leash after his poor preseason when he couldn’t throw a rock in the ocean, let alone complete a past.

Those on here during that time remember and I told them to paste it.

We’ll lose close games early and the excuse will be the defense is still trying to gel….watch

Then by game 6 Nate Allen will be quietly shuffled to spot duty and the Eagles will say they’ve put in some packages for him that’ll he’ll be responsible for but Atogwe have earned the right to be in there.

It’s like clock work.

PASTE IT!

Because of this decision later than sooner we will miss the playoffs.

7-9….8-8 if we’re lucky…..9-7 at best
