Michael Vick: “I became better at reading dogs than reading defenses”

In his upcoming biography, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick says his mind was more focused on understanding dogs than understanding his playbook and opposing defenses.   It’s quite a statement and surely to be much talked about when the Birds start training camp next Sunday.

“Back when I was involved in those activities, I may have become more dedicated to the deep study of dogs than I was to my Falcons playbook,” an excerpt from “Finally Free,” which he revealed to USA Today, reads. “I became better at reading dogs than reading defenses.”

One of the reasons Vick has written the book is because of all of the despondent people he’s run into, whom he thinks his comeback story might help.

“I run into so many people who feel like they don’t have any hope after they make a mistake, or after they can’t overcome certain obstacles in their life, or they put themselves in a position that is detrimental to their well being,” Vick said. “I just want them to know that there’s several roadblocks you’re going to run into. I did it. … Even though you may fall, you have to get up.”

Vick definitely said the right thing regarding leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory..

I have something that I want to give back to everyone that supported me. Here it is: I am committed, focused and determined to win a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles,” Vick writes. “This is my promise. It is my drive. I will work like a champion to get there. I want to do it for my family, friends, mentors, coaches, teammates, and fans. I want to do it for Philly.”

I can appreciate how Vick has been acting as human being. It takes a real person to admit his mistakes, own them, and learn from them. It really seems he has done just that. Will it translate to the football field? i hope so, but i do not say that with utter confidence.

Word on the streets in Tidewater was that Vick was not all that good at reading Dog’s tendancies either….

It is commendable that Vick is willing to use his own errors as teaching tools for others. I am sure it is not an easy thing to do, being publicly humbled in the way that he has. His openess could be viewed as another example of his having become a changed man. I cannot look into his mind, it isn’t for me to say what is actual contrition and what is a PR move for him. Honestly, I will never know for sure, nor will anybody else who is not very very close to him. But I hope that it is all true and on the up-and-up, redemption stories are appealing. I am still not convinced he is the type of qb who can lead his squad to a championship, but I remain willing to be convinced as the season plays out. Go Birds.

Dear Dez Bryant.

I understand your frustration of coming up short the last 3 years with your cowboys but really do you have to take it out on your mom? I would like to see you take more of your anger out on the Giants, Eagles or Redskins. But being though you will serve at least a 3 game suspension you will just have to wait then.

Sincerely,
DallasSUCKS!

What does he mean when he says he was good at reading dogs? This is utter
nonsense on Vick’s part. If he was good at reading dogs he wouldn’t have had them killing each other, executing them and winding up in jail. In my opinion a poor choice of words and a bad example.

wow…its about time…I haven’t logged onto this site in a week because of the malware warnings I was getting…some of you guys may want to run some anitmalware/virus scans on your PC….

The type of QB that can lead the Eagles to a SB?
OK JoeFriday….. what type of QB wins SB’s? that can be interpreted as a prejudice “type of statement”…Lets make this simple and generic….Winners win SB’s…How can you honestly believe that a guy that can gain 50 yards rushing and 250 yards passing a game can’t win the big one? There are 31 others NFL teams in the league, and every season a great QB doesn’t win the big one…Why? team around them? coaching? the QB’s production? bad game plan, against a better one? guy didnt feel like blocking? guy couldn’t block? kicker misses FG of FG’s? I mean really I am tired of that type of statement, “not the type of QB to win a SB” when the are so many other intangibles to consider…

ahhh, feels good to be back!

I think the legitimate concerns with the Eagles are several. But there are three things at the heart of it all when it comes to people dismissing them against the Packers, Steelers and Patriots of the league. 1) although they have a very good QB that has other wordly abilities, he is not considered to be an “elite” QB. 2) He also does not have a legitimate number one WR. Maclin has that potential but that potential will need to turn into production for the Eagles to bring home a Lombardi this year. D Jack is very talented but has too limited a skill set to be a number one. And the reception and TD prouction have never been there in four years in the league so it is time to stop kidding ourselves about that. Dangerous weapon? Absolutely! Game changer? Yes. Number one WR? No. 3) AR has not done well in big games. He and his staffs have been outcoached on numerous occasions and he often has blunders in play calling and time management. He is often too predictable and fails to play to his strengths because he wants to play the game his way. He will never win a championship with Vick until he comes to terms with the fact that this is not the 49ers. There is no Montana/Young or Jerry Rice. Vick and these WRs are not close to that. So run the ball more and play within your QB’s limitations. Vick can be great if you do not ask him to throw the ball 70% of the time. Donovan couldn’t do it. Vick can’t do it. And there are very few QBs that have ever played the game who can.

I would assume reading dogs would be similar to reading a program at a race track… I’m certain not identical, but along the same lines.

Unless you are being sarcastic

Other concerns would include Juan as D coordinator, Vick’s health and the back up plan, the play of their secondary, the health of Ryans and likelihood that Ryans can return to PB form and the loss of Jason Peters. One by one I will give my humble opinion. Juan will be better and he has more help with Bowles. In fact if he becomes a liability Bowles will take over at least behind the scenes. But I think he will be fine given his assistants and the full off-season and a year to learn OTJ. Second question. Will the Packers win the SB if Rodgers goes down? Ok so it is moronic to keep harping on Vick’s health. And I made this argument last week so I will not get into it but Kafka will be absolutely fine for a game or three if the defense holds up their end. And guess what? If the defense is fair to middling like they have been, we got no shot anyway no matter who the QB is. The secondary? Nnamdi will be better and DRC will be a quality starter. He is well aware that he is in a contract year and if he ever wants to make great money (as opposed to average money) he better show up this year. He is very much like Lito was. If we win, he will care. If we don’t he will play soft or be hurt. Giving him big dollars for the future will be foolish but for this year, our CB tandem will be top five in the league. Nate Allen will be good. Maybe not PB good, but close. If OJ comes from nowhere because he is healthy for the first time in years, our secondary could be the best in football. Tell me right now who will be better if those four guys play to their ability?? Bowles will get things right this year. Also, I answered last week on Bell. His only issue is health. If he is healthy, Mudd has him playing as top ten LT this year. Thats not Jason Peters. And GB and NYG don’t have Jason Peters either. So so what? Bell is good enough and the offense will still be excellent without him.
