Everybody Has An Opinion About Chip Kelly’s Decisions

MichaelVick13Chip Kelly was sailing along during the first few weeks as Eagles new head coach, until he got to the beginning of this week.  On Monday, he introduced his coaching staff and a major decision that he and his staff had made came to light.

Of course everybody knows by now that Kelly decided to retain the services of Michael Vick.  With that move he alienated about half of  the Eagles fans base or maybe more.

But he didn’t alienate myself.  I’m on board with what he has done because I like what I hear about them keeping it simple and not giving these guys too much to think about.

Kelly must take care not to get duped by Vick” is what Dan Graziano of ESPN wrote on his blog.

“That whole thing about Vick’s speed and his ability to make the speedy players around him more effective? Reid had that same plan. Didn’t work. Didn’t work in 2011, when the offensive line was good, and it certainly didn’t work in 2012, when the line fell apart. And one of the main reasons it didn’t work was that, for all of his physical ability, Vick comes with significant flaws that have prevented him from maintaining a level of quarterback performance consistent with the best in the game.”

Kelly, Shurmur and Lazor are confident they can coach Michael Vick to get rid of the ball quickly

“Some of the systems that they run they don’t ask him to get the ball out quick.  Do I think he can get the ball out quick?  I think he’s got an unbelievable release.  It’s up and out and it’s quick,” said Kelly.

“What he’s asked to do from a read progression and all those other things, I don’t know what he’s been asked to do in the past, but that’s our job as coaches where he can get the ball out quickly, because we have some play makers on the offensive side of the ball that are going to flourish when we get the ball in their hands, so that’s on us as coaches.  Not on the quarterback.”

Eagles Will Have To Blown Away With The Offer Before They Will Part With Nick Foles

Did you notice how the Eagles made sure to put that unless they were blown away by the offer comment out there?  Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com says that NFL sources told him the Eagles would need an offer which blew them away to give up Foles.

I’m ready to make an offer.  What about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?  Check that, I’ll just offer a peanut butter sandwich. You’ll have to get the milk or water on your own.

Clearly they’re just trying to get everything they can from Foles.  If they thought he was going to be a great quarterback, even a great offer wouldn’t get him.

Ray Didinger Says Chip Kelly Is Wasting A Season With Michael Vick:

CBSPhilly.com has this story about Ray Didinger’s interview with Angelo and the Morning Show on 94-WIP on this past Wednesday.  Like most of the fans here in the Philly area, he’s seen enough of Michael Vick.

“I think you are wasting a season,” Didinger told Angelo Cataldi and The 94WIP Morning Show. “The Eagles re-signed Vick to a restructured deal, essentially for one year.”

“Even if you don’t have your other issues with Michael Vick and his past and everything, it just doesn’t make… I mean this organization for the last two years has been heading in the wrong direction,” Didinger said. “And you’ve taken steps towards rectifying that, and cleaning the past out and getting a fresh start. I mean, getting rid of Joe Banner, getting rid of Andy Reid, Marty Mornhinweg, the whole coaching staff. If you’re turning the page, turn the page all the way and Michael Vick is as big a part of the problem as anyone.”

Jeff Stoutland thinks he can get quality play out of Danny Watkins:

Throughout the conversations on Monday with Chip Kelly and his staff, they emphasized keeping things simple and not over complicating the offense or the defense.  There’s an article on CSNPhilly.com about new offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland believing he can make Danny Watkins a good player.

I know what a good player looks like,” Stoutland said on Monday, “and I like what I see in Danny.”

“I think Danny Watkins is a winner,” Stoutland said. “He’s athletic, he’s explosive. I see a young man with a lot of talent.”

We got to support our coach. Hands down no if and or buts about it. Trust me, this man is classified as a football genius for a reason. He knows what he’s doing. We gotta give all of them a chance. He knows Nick FOLES just as much as anybody, He played against him in college and knows his str. You already know if MV goes down, he will have Nick ready with a back up plan. I see Trent hittin he door, and we use Dennis Dixon in practice to scheme against other teams with running quarterbacks.

For some reason I really think this years defense will be the best we have had in a while.. Imagin if we get a all star with the 4th pick and take the S from FLORIDa or Texas.

Kelly should improve on 4 wins in first year (4-12, 2012), 8 wins in 2nd year (8-8 2011), and 10 wins in the 3rd year ( 10-6 2010 & playoff lose)

Stevo, I agree 100% He get’s 2 off-seasons to right the ship, & if they don’t show significant improvement by next 2014 & aren’t in the playoff hunt, he goes bye-bye, along with Rosebuds!!!! But the latter won’t happen, because he’s Lurie’s butt buddy, hand puppet!

This has more to do with the system not who the better QB is. None of us know for sure how Chip Kelly will run the offensive but it sure looks like he’s going to continue using the read option. If that’s the case he feels that he can win right away or he would not signed Vick. I was hoping the new coach would go back to more basic offensive and blow up the team to get there and not try to be the smartest guy in the room. Hopefully Kelly’s approach will work and he is the smartest guy in the room.

I have no Opinion on Mike Vick and Coach Chip Kelly, but if I did,
I would WTF … I stated when Kelly was hired (as I would have said whoever the new HC Was) that in order to bbring a new Vision, Philisophy and turn around the Eagles losing Culture, that most of the Veteran Players from the past Teams would have to go.. I stated it after the Season was over and I state it again here in mid-Febuary..
I suggested that Eagles model their re-build Program similar to what the COlts/TB Bucs did last Off-Seasaon and what Pete Carroll did when he came on board with Seattle 3 Years ago.. Cut the chord wil players 30 Years and Older by either Trade, Release (Forget Redoing Contracts), if they have not earned their keep,,then move on, how is a Player going to play for you and buy in 100% to your new Program making 30-40-50% less that he did previously.. It’s never a good idea unless you have a real long-term Veteran looking to finish a Career with the Club ..
I believe I will be begin postin my Opinion about things on here more often..

Paulman I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s the middle of February. We really don’t have any idea of what Kelly will do. With that being said I was hoping for a new approach something similar to how the Ravens and the Steelers play football. I guess I was hoping for Gus Brady but I will support Kelly and let this play out.

I like Mike Vick, I just think he is damaged beyond repair
He was knocked out 2 years in a row and those KO’s are getting worse
I expect him to get KO’d again in 2013 if granted the opportunity to start —
If Watkins couldn’t get on the field ahead of Reynolds, Bell, Dunlap, Scott or Kelly, what is to like?

I agree with Ray Didinger – If you are going to turn the page, then turn the page. That would mean getting rid of Vick since he was a big part of the problem.

I’m becoming very apprehensive about Chip Kelly’s plans. I had thought Kelly would use the zone/read offense the way the 49ers used the pistol…maybe 30% of the time. Now I’m beginning to think Kelly plans to run the zone/read exclusively, which I think is a mistake.

As far as supporting Kelly – what the hell choice do we have?

Irish in Ray Didinger’s opinion the Eagles should have never hired Chip Kelly and his gimmicky offense, so how would he even know what kind of QB he needs. Nobody ever holds these guys accountable for what they say. Why would Chip Kelly give one damn what he thinks when Didinger doesn’t even think he should have been hired?

I have spent an hour watching tutorials of Kelly’s RO… Trying to get a handle on it. I never coached against it as it was just coming on board when I was leaving… And i dont watch much college football on tv .It is extrelmly interesting… If it works, the happiest man at novacare is lesean McCoy… Understanding he ain’t playing Oregon state or Utah. It is a running back friendly system… All you guys talking about AR not running enough and always whining about it… You can’t bitch about keeping MV or Kelly or anything… It will be ‘run Forrest run’ until he gets fired!

Hey I’m not a fan and against the hire (don’t know why they didn’t seek my counsel) but one of two things are going to happen, either we become an incredibly exciting team and win some or we hire a new up and coming pro coordinator in a couple of years.

Why is it that in order to turn the page you have to get rid of the QB? Ray diddy named all the things they changed Banner, Andy, Martty all of those guys have been here for a while so they are a constant in most of our failures. Vick came in on the down side of andy’s regime. to say in order to turn the page vick must go then you can say the same about any of the other players that have only been here a short time.his first year he really didnt play his second year was good, his last two not so good, but it was more the direction of Andy and co. being at the end of thier run than it was just Vick. the Eagles made the mistake of hiring mercenaries like Nnamdi to come play and make them “leaders”. Guys like that have not earned their Wings on the side of they helmet so they don’t go the extra mile. I believe after all what he has been through here Vick feels he is an Eagle and so does most of the lockeroom. that being said unless you have another option that blows you away it doesn’t hurt the team to bring him back to fill the gap of the old and new since he was on the cuff of both eras anyway.

Keeping Vick is a waste in my opinion, but is there a crazy plan behind the move? I’m for letting Foles sink or swim. If he stinks, they win 5 or less and we get a top pick for a real quarterback. Here’s my crazy plan, let me say I have no problem being terrible this year and hitting the reset button. Trade Foles for KC’s first pick in 2014. The Eagles can get that if Reid really does like Foles and it’s like getting a second rounder this year. Let Vick be the starter and set the single season record for turnovers unless Dixon is forced to take some loses. Now we come into the 2014 draft with 2 of the top picks and mayby the top 2 if Foles really stinks in KC. Let’s get Clowney and a top quarterback to go with the existing young guys. Imagine Clowney and a top quarterback in the same draft. I said it’s crazy, but it would get me through a terrible 2013 season.

Stevo……on another post somewhere you asked how Vick/Atlanta did in 2003/2004 the year they went to the NFC champ game and relied on the run.

Here’s how it looked:

TJ Duckett had 102 carries for 504 yrds and 8 tds
Warrick Dunn had 265 carries for 1106 yrds and 11 tds (career year). He added 29 recepts for 294 yrds
Vick had 120 rushes for 902 yrds

So they had quite the rushing attack. That one year.

As for passing from Vick (shudder)
181 for 321 (56%) for a whopping 2300 yrds 14 tds and 12 ints

And now the bad:

Vicks 2nd highest amount of carries resulted in a (predictable) league leading 16 fumbles that year.

16.

For all that rushing, Atl was very inconsistent on O. They hit 30+ pts 4x, but were held under 14pts 5x that year. Suffice it to say, they were a “fair weather” team. Rolling up big wins over the dregs of the league, but struggling mightily againt teams over .500 – but you can only play the sched s can’t really fault them there. (Though it was one of the reasons why I was not worried about them in the NFC champ game. That, and I knew twho their QB was and what was going to happen when the chips were down. I also knew that Jim Johnson’s blitzes were going to confuse the hell out of MV)

In the 3 reg season losses Vick was putrid (best word) going 38 for 77 for 430 yrds 0tds and 5 ints (don;t count the last loss of the season as they had clinched, Vick only played a 1/4, sat their starters ect)
His best game as a passer came against Denver when he went 18 of 24 for 252 and 2 tds

That was the only time Vick threw for over 220 yrds that year (he had 2 other 200 yrd games).

BTW – 200 yrd passing games will NOT CUT IT in 2013 where QBs routinly average 300+ through the air.

Things did not improve in the playoffs where Vick was a non factor in game 1 and awful in game 2

They beat STL (Bulger, not warner) at home. Vick went 12 of 15 for 82 yrds and 2 tds (82 yrds??) as the Falcons got an early lead and ra all over the rams

Dunn 17 for 142
Duckett 15 for 66
Vick 8 for 119

But this didn;t work against Philly. Eagles took an early lead….Vick had to throw more. Jim Johnson blitzed a guy who can;t read a blits and the predictable happened.

11 of 24 for 136 yrds 0 tds and 1 int. (He was pickd one other time but called back on a D penalty)

Would you be suprised to lern that Mike Vick also fumbled that game. Because I wouldn’t be. (Atl recovered)

I don’t like Vick beacuse he is a average QB who has nnever won anything and committs too many turnovers.. I could care less that he’s Black or even his Dog Fighting deal since he paid the price and moved forward with his life which is actually very commendale, As a Person, I have no roblems with him at all and root for the guy, but as a NFL QB, I don’t like him at all for we have a 10 Years Record to go by and to be brutally honest, it’s very honest, plain and simple and for a 1st Overall Pick in the Draft some years ago, he has never lived up to the hype that he and his entrouage created.. He is a Playmake, no doubt abuot that, but as far as being a COnsitent NFL QB week in and week out, season in and season out, he just doesn’t have it and there is nothing that’s going to chance that now that he’s 33 Years old and a 10 Year Vet.. for better or wrose, Mick VIck is what he is.. A highg Risk, High Reward QB and I would much rather prefer a more consistent QB who makes smarts reads, stays away from negative plays and turnovers.. and Vick has never been able to do this at the NFL consistently over his Career… The Number and his Record state what he is.. pluis now you throw in the fact of his injuries and multiple concussions.. he hasn’t played a full season since 2006 , so what makes anyone believe that he is the QB for 2013..

So you are saying that Vick’s turnovers and craptastic passing percentage (career) have something to do with the color of his skin? I did not know that. Wow Warren Moon must have been a different shade to overcome such limitations.

In my opinion the only Racist Idiots are those defending Vick against FACTS.

Yes I dislike 7 and have since he came out of College. I always thought he was OVER RATED as a Pro QB. (He is make that was an incredible athlete) My dislike of him has nothing to do with skin color. Randall was/is my favorite Eagle of all time. Give me a black clone of Tom Brady (Hell I’ll settle for Purple) any day;0 but give me a pocket passer in a true NFL QB mold.

Christian ponder had 2900 yards as a qb this year and had MANY games where he didnt get 200 yrds. And they went to the playoffs. Know why? Caus they are a running team.

Never a good sign when a Teams leading Rushing TD producer is your QB..
Just ask Cam Newton who had 14 Rushing TD’s his Rookie Season and threw for 4000 yards Passing and his Team finished 6-10 because he threw too many Int’s at Critical Times and DC McDermott is one of the worst in protecting Leads when it comes to Call-Playing for the Defense ..
In 2012 – Cam Newton rushed for 8 TD’s, and threw for 3850 Yards as the Panthers won 7 Games as they did a better job of spreading the ball around
Now most of the Cam Newton’s TD’s are 1 Yard QB Keeps since he’s 6-5 and 255lbs which is a different story for M Vick at 5-11 1/2′ & about 205lbs
RGIII and Russell Will learn this as well, which is to get the ball out of your hands and into your playmakers and let them take the pounding of getting into the red-zone, run when you have exhausted your reads or if a broken coverage and the space is wide open… Vick is not going to make his living running the ball anymore, he’s lost a step and too small.. If he can react and hit his 2nd/3rd OPtions nad keep his head and eyes on the Receivers down field, then it’s just more of the same from him…

I want to see the birds run the flipping ball. I want teams to worry about our run. That hasnt happened in like 12 years. I want the birds to use their speed to keep teams guessing… but it has to be fast. At go does the qb have the ball? The rb? I wantnto ise that speed and thebrun game to open lanes for our wrs. I want the birds to use the entore field… not just trying to hit wrs on 80 yard streaks.
Most of all i want to see a flipping d.

Pman, Vinnie, the works……

I have a 4 year old whom i love dearly. When its time to eat (she hates eating) she says… but i caaaannnnnt , I cannnnntttt.. over and over its….. i cannnnttt i caaaaant.

Listen….. we are having a comp at qb. It is what it is. I didnt want this H.C. i didnt want this qb anymore. But it is what it is. Staop saying… we caaaaant.

When i look at 2012
i see a crappy team that didnt worry about stopping the run or bringing a guy down. I see a beaten up oline that couldnt hold anyone off the qb. I see a coach that didnt care about injuries or personel… he cared about his system. Need proof? look at when Shady went down.

About the Reid system…. bombs away. Deep throw deep throw deep throw. Watch the friggin games guys. It was DB’s dropping back to cover and the D line pinning their ears back. I see a 1 QB who turned the ball over and did little to win BUT…. also took a hell of a beating and didnt say boo about it until the end of the year saying some guys quit (whats funny bout that is the same people who slam him for that are the same people who cried that McNabb was a yes man and never spoke up, but anyway…) I see another QB who came in and did well at times and looked pretty bad at other times. I didnt see anything super special. I seen an av QB. So basically i seen a crappy crappy team from top to bottom and a HC who did little to help them.

When you look at 2012
you see…. Mike Vick sucks.

Do you see how friggin simple minded that is?

and now about 2013
I see…. lots of work to be done. Mostly on the D side of the ball. Changing systems…. changing players…. FA.. Draft. Lots to do. DO they need a big man on the OL? prolly. Do they need a FS? yes.. do they need a DT? for sure…. I see on the o side a fast team that wants to run the ball… i like that/. I see that they like Mike Vicks quick release… thats good i guess. I see a need for underneath throws this year… do they have the WR? hmmm maybe not… i dont know yet.

When you look at 2013
you see….Mike Vick still sucks.

Ok. we get it. Point made. Mike Vick is the flipping Anti Christ. Ok already.

when i look at this team i say…. hmmm… maybe we can. you say…. “but we caaaannnnntttt”.

can i get an amen!!!

There’s no doubt that the Eagles need a much better Defense
Biggest problem is the Secondary and the lack of Turnover they have not forced the last 2 Seasons, but I still get to the Offense.
In today’s NFL you to score at least 26-28 Pts a game to have a winning record
And make the Playoffs. With Vick they were averaging 17-18 Pts a game last year before the wheels fell off and injuries
He is not consistent enough in his play and decision-making process to lead
4-5 Scoring Drives a game.. It’s all or nothing with him,
A biomb pass, a big run or scramble, but this does not win against the good Teams or , DC’s in the NFL on a consistent basis..

Disagree about the turnovers from the D…. the biggest problem with the D is the same problem with the O…. Basic basic football….

…… fumbles by RB’s and WR’s…. Pics by the QB….. misq’s and mistackles from everyone. failure to bring a guy down. Failure to know if you have FS help or not. Failure to get the play in on time, failure to hire a DC. all of these are basics. Basics. Stuff they teach in H.S.

biggest thing the eagles could do this year is teach the game. U do something dumb? Have a seat right over there next to Brown who chose not to use 2 hands.

This is on Vick
This is on DRC
This is on the 4th sting OL who happen to be starting last year.
True for all.
True for avant
true for mccoy
True for Foles if he drops the clipboard or something.

Learn the game Eagles. Learn it. Its not on Vick or the coach or the GM anymore. Its on you now. Learn it.

Do people not realize that vick would normally throw the ball to the opposing team! Please tell me you guys don’t think Vick is a good QB. He is adverage at best. Yes, he is an amazing athlete and might do well in Kelly’s offence, but Vick sucks as a QB. You guys will see. But I’m ok with the Eagles trying to salvage his ability in this new idiot proof offense lol

Only his delusional, racist, idol worshippers do. Nobody with an ounce of football IQ, & acumen, thinks he’s a good QB. Never was, & never will be a good, winning QB. PERIOD! It ain’t about color, creed, religious beliefs, his delusions, attitude, or his past crimes. HE JUST AIN’T A GOOD QB! No change of coach, system, address, team, or personnel, is going to change that, after 10 years of injury, inconsistencies, TO’s, decline, & failure! END OF STORY!

I thought Vick looked great in 2010 and had turned things around but its been 2 years and he hasn’t played anything like he did in 2010.I wish i would see that player again but I think it is over…
