Eagles QB Nick Foles Believes He Will Start

NickFoles1Eagles second-year quarterback Nick Foles isn’t intimidated by the prospects of competing with Michael Vick and the other quarterbacks on the Birds roster for the starting job.  Despite not having the foot speed to run with the other quarterbacks, Foles believes he can still be the starter because Chip Kelly has promised to build the offense around the strengths of the quarterback.

“I’m just going to keep working,” Foles said. “It’s a business. I know from the draft process I went through last year that teams bring you in and analyze who they think are the best players in the draft. That’s the smart thing to do. That’s out of my control. My only concern is getting better every day. I’m excited to be here and I’m going to keep working.”

He had conversations with Kelly and the subject of him being traded never came up, so he looks forward to the competition for the starting job.

Foles believed Kelly when he said he was going to build the Eagles offense around the strengths of the quarterback.  The young second-year quarterback feels he can run Kelly’s offense and help the team put points on the scoreboard.

“I feel like if you want to be a quarterback in this league or in pee-wee or something, you have to think, ‘I’m the guy.’ If you think you’re going to be a backup, you’re going to be a backup,” Foles said. “That’s how it is … Every single quarterback on this team believes that he can be the starting quarterback, and that’s what you want. That’s what you want on a team, you want competition, and the same goes with receivers, same goes at every position. I guarantee you there’s not a guy here that doesn’t think he’s the guy and you have to have that mentality when you go to work.

“I know that I believe I can be a starter in this league and be a starter on this team, but like I said before, every single quarterback on this team believes that. That’s how you have to approach every day.”

Foles had good things to say about one of his competitors for that starting quarterback job, veteran Michael Vick.

“I think Michael is a great quarterback,” Foles said. “On a team, you want the best quarterbacks possible competing against each other. And Mike’s one of the best in the league.

“We want competition. We want the best quarterbacks. I’ll keep saying it. We’re all on the same team. We’re all going to compete against each other. The guy that can score the most points and be a leader is going to be the guy [that starts]. Somebody’s going to be that guy.”

Fact is he probably will start sometime this season…when Vick gets hurt again for the millionth time in his career.

If the pick does in fact end up being Geno at 4 then they better start Geno day 1. If Geno is the pick at 4, he should be good enough to be a day 1 starter in the league and play well on top of that. Just saying if they do make him the pick at 4, they better play him and tell Vick to take a hike to the Philadelphia Soul.

Don’t wast anymore fucking time. Its not like Vick is a good NFL Qb today to be able to teach a rookie QB anything anyways. He is new to the system himself anyways.

The title of the article is

“Nick Foles Believes he will start”

Which he never once says during the interview.

During the interview he does say:

“I believe that whoever the QB is we’ll build an offense around that”
“I’m just here to compete”
“I love being a philadelphia eagle…and I’m just here to compete…”
“we’re all here to compete…we all have the same goals…”
“that’s the mindset…every single QB on this team believes he is the starting QB….and that’s what you want…you want competition…..”

which to me, seems a little different than

“As of right now, my mindset is that I’m the starter,” from a certain former superstar…..

If the FO doesn’t ship him out on draft day he probably stands a good chance of winning the starting job based on how quickly he picked up the West Coast offense and was able to execute most of it in-game immediately. If he learns Kelly’s offense as quickly along with already having played with most of the personnel and knowing players speed, instincts and weaknesses he will have a decisive advantage over other QBs that will be in camp. I seriously get the feeling Vick is essentially a safety net for if they can’t get either Smith or Manuel, so it’s really just Foles versus everybody else if they get the QB in the draft they’re shooting for.

Foles had 6 tds and 5 ints. Fumbled 8 times and was sacked 20 times and got injured after his 5th NFL start with a 1-5 record.. If that constitutes “picking up the offense” hey we both have different views. lol. One more thing before the “bad offensive line” and no weapons thing comes up. If memory serves me correctly didn’t Bryce Brown set franchise records for rushing behind that oline for Foles.?

Hater.

Not willing to concede the kid one start to get acclimated to the NFL?

3 of those ints and 4 of the fumbles came in the 1st half of relief and his first start.

2 ints and 4 fumbles over his next 5 starts. 1 per game. Exactly where his other rookie colleagues were….and half that of his predecessor.

Looking at the moves that Kelly has made so far, I’m not convinced that he is dead set on running the Oregon read option. It seems he’s bringing in versatile offensive players that create mismatches to a Def, i.e.; Casey and the 6’7 receiver types and playing an up tempo style, with the QB making calls at the LOS, similar to NE. It’ll be interesting to see who he drafts on the offensive side of the ball, perhaps someone like Swope in the later rounds, who plays WR, but was recruited as a RB or a TE that can stretch the field vertically. If they stay at 4, I think the pick is D. Jordan.

If Foles is allowed to work in Kelly’s system, and if he is given a season to show what he can do, there is a better than 50-50 chance that he will fail.

If we draft Geno Smith or E.J. Manuel, there is a better than 50-50 chance that they will fail.

Mike Vick is the only player in the history of all sports to carry the label “has potential” into his 30s. Based on his past performances, I think the odds are 80% that he will fail.

For that reason I would rather see anyone over Vick.

There weren’t any good points… BigL, your being too nice…
The only 30 year old player to still have potential is bullshit…Romo, Palmer…have potential if they don’t do certain things…No matter your age potential still exists…Potential is not age restricted…

Vick’s chances of being successful in a Kelly type of system are far more greater than that of Foles or Geno Smith at this point and time…Geno Smith already has stated he doesn’t believe he would fit well in a Kelly system…If I’m a GM that alone does not show me the type of confidence I want from my QB, Geno Smith won’t be here and Foles is not the Eagles QB of future!

I know exactly how the Romo story is going to end every year. Same way it always has. We know EXACTLY what Romo is. We know exactly how he is going to play.

Vick chances of being crippled playing in Kelly’s offense are far greater than that of Foles or Geno Smith at this point and time.

The only situation you could put Vick in where he would be successful is if you put him in a game of two-hand-touch. And that only if it’s not rough-touch.

Foles have “0” chance of starting for the Eagles….

Why would the Eagles pay Vick the nice bonus and restructure his deal if Nick Foles was considered a legitimate choice to lead the team?

Vick would have been cut if they they thought that high of Foles.

Foles have been sold a pipe dream to run his mouth in hopes of Marty Morning breath asking the Jets to trade for him.

Kolb 6w 8l 60% 3122yrds (223/g) 17 tds (1.3/g)11 ints 10 fumbles (1.4/g)

Vick 10w 13l 58% 5424 (235/g) 28tds (1.2/g) 22 ints 21 fumbles (1.9/g)

not by much…but still higher tds, lower turnovers, higher comp % and exact same win %

I still mainain the Eagles would have been better off trading Vick for 2 firsts and keeping Kolb then Trading Kolb for useless lazy DRC and a 2nd and keeping Vick.

Eagles record would have been just about the same, but would have had 2 top 10 Buffalo Bills picks to go along with their own.

What’s done is done….both Qbs stink….weagles would have got a better haul for Vick than Kolb.

Age plays a role. Experience.

Guys 100 games in who are still making the same stupid mistakes as they did in games 1-16 (like Vick and Palmer) have (or should have) lost the “potential” moniker at some point don’t you think?

They’re not going to magically regain it. There isn’t going to be some “if only in this system….Kelly will fix him” magic. How many times can someone fall for that Line? I mean we’ve heard it now every single year for a decade with Vick. Give it up.

Foles has “potential” because he’s only appeared in 7 games and appointed himself very well. I could perhaps give you that Dixon has “potential” because he also has not had many NFL appearances…though he has been in the league 4 years..and his 4 appearances are not altogether very impressive…..of course any drafted QBs coming in have “potential” also…or at least we hope they do.

The question is….

If there is a QB on the roster with “potential” and there is at least 1 (Foles), if not 2 (Foles and Dixon) then why the hell would you draft another QB at this point?

That’s stupid.

RealTalk777
RealTalk777

Dixon also has the same amount of wins as Foles…you’re big on stats and wins/losses…A QB that has played less has the same amount of wins…and no don’t bring up, well he played on the Steelers…because to hear you tell it, everything revolves around the QB.

win/loss is one of the stats that QBs get awarded.

Dixon has 2 full starts over 4 years. 1 win 1 loss.

12 of 25 for 145 one and 1 in his first (not terrible for a first start) in a loss

18 of 26 for 236 otds adn 1 int in his win….pretty pedestrian, but ok.

My only question about Dixon is why have 2 different coaching staffs felt he was not even worthy of being a 2nd or even 3rd QB. Its not like he had to beat out anyone significant for those backup roles.

you don’t see any red flags there obviously, but I do.

I don’t see the same red flags with Foles whom an NFL coaching staff put as a backup in his first year, and who performed very well coming in to a pretty terrible situation at the end of last year.

So yes, I am inclined to see more potential with Foles than with Dixon at this point.

vinnietheevictor
vinnietheevictor
April 4, 2013 3:21 pm

But to my pooint, if Foles AND Dixon have potential, but require a slew of NFL games to demoonstrate it…..then drafting a QB this year is a waste of resources.

QB depth chart right now in my world
Foles
Dixon
Edwards
The new guy
The beaten down small guy

There is only one question….do you believe Foles or Dixon have potential to be the starters?

Yes – then move on

No – Draft Geno Smith.

What Carson has done has quit on 2 Teams that Paid him a lot of $$$
To lead their Teams (Bengals/Raiders)
I never saw much in Palmer’s Game to warrant any big $$$ to him in the first place and it puzzles me that a Team like the Cardinals who have made a lot of changes with Roster and Coaching Staff and finally have a little excitement going on would bring this “Cancer” onto their Teamz
Playing in probably toughest Division now with the 49ers, Seahawks and an improved Rams Team, why not Draft a Geno Smith and rebuild with a young QB with promise is my thinking instead of going with a retread loser like Carson Palmer, but then again, that’s why the Cardinals are the Cardinals..

Vick is Vick. He can blow you away with the highlights and make you want to punch the wall with what he does. He will get a shot in camp…. i for 1 am curious if he can give us something once the option of holding the ball for 5 secs is gone.

Kolb is Kolb….. a backup QB for a different team. Its time to let it go vinnie. You were wrong about him. Lots of you were.

But he has proven himself, being in the league longer than Foles, under NFL Coaching, and the professionals have concluded, he doesn’t measure up to a NFL QB, so they felt his place was on the practice squad.

Chip Kelly, is in his first year as an NFL Head Coach, its not even proven conclusive he is an NFL Head Coach. He is familiar with Dixon, but like you, and I discussed before, if he is cut, or sits behind Foles. Get ready to join the club so many are members of, because they ran their mouth but the reality was they didn’t know what they were talking about……Foles is the future QB of the Eagles. Like it or not.

Eagles should stay far away from geno smith, both Vick and foles are better, way better qbs than smith will ever be.

Vick had his shot, he’s done, it’s time to see what nick foles can do with a healthy online, new system, new coach.

Round and round we go. Vick is a selfish turnover machine, Foles is a unproven slow footed bum but he’s a savant at reading defenses. Vick is still living off potential at 33 years old. Foles is the next Tom Brady. Mini camp and the draft can’t get here fast enough for me.

Here’s another way to look at it.

Because of Luck and RGIII sqewing the draft last year….Eagles got great Value in Foles in round 3. Remove those 2 once in a lifetime players….and assume the same order of QB needy teams and ranking of QBs.

Round 1
Tannehil to Colts
Weedon to Skins
Osweiler to Dolfins
Cousins to Browns

Round 2
Foles to Broncos
Wilson to Redskins or Eagles if they pass……

Now you can perhaps argue that they might not have taken QBs in those spots, but other than the Broncos, those were some extremely QB needy teams…..

So Eagles got great Value in Foles who would have been a second rounder (at least) had it not been for the big 2.

Now this year…..there are no “decade” players at the position……So you’ve got nothing but teams reaching to fill need.

If Eagles feel Foles or Dixon aren’t good enough (an no I will not consider the other in the equation) then they have to take Smith at 4…or perhaps Manuel at the top of round 2.

Smith would, at best, have beeen late first round last year behing the Big 2 and Tannhill…and Manuel…..3rd or 4th round at best.

So drafting either of them this year represents lost value.

Better to wait till next year for 2 reasons:

1 – find out if you already have a QB on the roster in Foles (probably) or Dixon (less likely)
2 – Draft class is considered to be stronger next year, so draft value is higher than this year.

Drafting a QB in any round is hard. Its the hardest position to get right. How many guys get let go and vanish?

Im with you…. I want no part in a QB UNLESS Kelly is 100% sure its the guy. And i dont think he thinks Geno is.

And before I hear from 1 or 2 of you about how Lurie will demand it… give me a break.

My point about Vick and “potential” is this – The guy is 33 years old and people still talk like he can reinvent himself into something he has never been.

I don’t know how many of you guys were paying attention back in 2003 when the Falcons fired Dan Reeves. The talk back then was that Jim Mora and his West Coast Offense would fix Vick.

Then Vick cane to Philly and Andy Reid and Marty were going to fix Vick’s shortcomings and he would be a pass first QB.

Now Kelly comes to town and all at once this 33 year-old has a new lease on life. The Great Vick will now transform into a read/option QB. In an interview Vick was making comments about rushing for 1000 yards.

People accept that Tony Romo is what he is – they accept that Carson Palmer is what he is… Nobody talks about Romo or Palmer improving their foot work or delivery… it’s too late for that. It’s only Vick that is a 33 year-old work in progress…

Vick is what he is – an injury prone turnover machine. There’s no system or coach that fixes that.

Obviously Chip Kelly looked at all the tape on Foles and said oh hell no I cant go into a season with that. Get Mike Vick on the phone. Hey Mike I will give your injury prone, turnover machine ass 10 million dollars to come back before I go into a season with a 3rd round reach. Ive looked at his game film..lol. This is coming from a coach who has been repeatedly called a offensive genius. So its safe to say he knows what he is talking about.. I think he knows just a little about offenses.

Jim Mora and Andy Reid knew a little bit about football too… I’m sure they looked a film of Vick too… I’m sure they ran to the phone with offers for Vick too… And, I bet neither one would give him 5 cents to play on their team today.

I hope Chip Kelly is smart enough not to commit to Vick. Unlike Foles, who is unproven, Vick is a 10 year proven bum.

Ummm…Vick got a pay cut, not a raise.

He went from 15 million to 3.5.

The remaining 6.5 mil is only if he beats out everyone for the starting QB role, plays 90% of the snaps and wins the SB……………………………………………

Sorry I had to stop there because I was laughing too much.

Confidence abounds.

You guys lack “sand” to debate with vinnie, this debate over Vick vs foles is not even close, give it up, find something else to post about, Vick is a cool dude, far more Philly than that puss mcchoke ever was, but he’s just not that good, overhyped, brought here for marketing purposes, a Lurie experiment, that’s what this owner does, he doesn’t necessarily bring in the best, just the best o suit his agenda to an ignorant fan base

Both of the QBs are not good and probably won’t be the starter next year. Bringing in Dixon and working out every QB under the sun should really solidify how Kelly feels about Vick and Foles. I don’t think that Geno is the answer, but if Kelly does, then draft him. I want no part of Manuel though.

I have never heard Chip Kelly say he doesn’t like either QB Vick, or Foles, he brought in some reserves,….so what? But I have heard most speculate into what he’s thinking – Your saying it, not Kelly – .

But just because you don’t like Vick or Foles, isn’t an excuse to draft a bad QB, because the draft dictates this is the best available. Smith, and Manuel – especially Manual, are bad options to the Eagles needs. Period.

So basically what you are saying GM is that what I say doesn’t matter because Kelly didn’t say it, but because you think that Smith and Manuel are bad, then that is law? – Your saying it, not Kelly –

I just want to be clear.

Why would Kelly come out and say he doesn’t like the QBs? :Do you really think that would happen? Instead from what he has done, bringing in QB after QB to look at as well as bringing in Dixon, it seems that he may be looking for another option than Vick/Foles. Would you disagree with that? Is that how a coach who likes his options at QB acts? Working out 2 guys that may go in the the first 2 rounds?

For more clarification, I think that Vick is too injury prone to play in a RO offense and Foles can’t run that kind of offense, because he runs dragging a tire around. I don’t like Smith or Manuel either.

No Bugs, that wasn’t exactly what I meant. I only meant that, getting rid of Vick, or Foles isn’t a given, or drafting Smith oe Manual; Just like cutting Vick wasn’t a given, just because thats what we read into it.

Dixon is as good an option as Trent Edwards, don’t you think. There both practice squad players. I agree with the creating competition angle, but it’s not a given that thats exactly what he is thinking. I can only post what I would do. I would keep Foles, and roll with Vick as my starter until it’s time to pull him, and put Foles in permanently.

We are on the same page Bugs with Manual, and Smith. I just think there are too many needs to compromise by drafting a QB. I actually think Matt Scott, would be a nice developmental player, but to draft Smith or Manual would be reaching in the first two rounds, which isn’t what we want. Andy Reid did that, and we saw the results.

I believe that no QB is Drafted this Draft
Eagles will go with Vick, Foles, Dixon and Rinnie of Practice Squad
I believe Kelly gives every opportunity to Foles to be the #1 QB
And if he fails to play well and pick up his Offense, then it will be Vick as the #1
For 2013 and then they will address the QB Postion come 2014 Draft where there will be better QB Prospects, until then they will go with what they currently gave and may the best QB win out over Camp
