Notes From The Phillies’ 14-2 Loss To Cleveland

Roy HalladayThe Philadelphia Phillies had their three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night, falling to the Indians 14-2 in Cleveland. Their record drops to 12-15.

  • After three straight quality starts, Roy Halladay imploded on the mound tonight. Halladay lasted just 3.2 innings, getting lit up for eight runs on nine hits and three walks.
  • Halladay gave up four runs in the first inning, giving up a pair of two-run shots to Carlos Santana and Mark Reynolds. It took him 33 pitches to get out of the first inning. After tossing a couple of scoreless innings, Halladay was torched again for four more runs in the fourth inning.
  • The Phillies relievers were unable to do anything to stop the bleeding. Chad Durbin checked in and allowed four runs of his own. Durbin has not had a successful return with the Phillies so far, his ERA is up to 7.00.
  • Raul Valdes took over for Durbin, and allowed two runs over two innings on two solo home runs.
  • Phillippe Aumont managed to work a scoreless eighth inning.
  • Delmon Young made his Phillies debut with a solo homer in his first at-bat of the season. That was the high point of this game for the Phils.
  • Ben Revere returned to lineup after several games off, but still couldn’t get anything going at the plate, finishing the night 0-3.
  • Chase Utley drove in the team’s other run with a home run of his own.

Final Thoughts

Even throughout Roy Halladay’s recent run of successful starts, I’ve preached cautious optimism.

I wasn’t at all convinced that Halladay was “back” and I think tonight’s game clearly shows that he’s not.

Halladay will have his share of games like this, just as he’s going to have his share of good outings like he had over his last three starts. Some nights his body is going to allow him to do a little more than it will on other nights. Unfortunately, there’s just no telling what to expect from Halladay from one start to the next.

Ugly game. 5 hits against a mediocre starter with mediocre stuff. Ben Revere has been awful since arrival. I only watched the first few innings, no patience at the plate from anybody again. Agree that Doc will probably be up and down this season.
This team should be bashing the ball but they aren’t.

Where are all of the pom-pom waving, stepford, lemmings at, the blasted me, for honestly, truthfully, factually, criticised these stiffs, & their ill-equipped, inept, over-matched, failure of a GM! This roster of undisciplined, boring, overpaid, bunch of has-beens, & never-will-be’s, are both unwatchable, & hopeless!

Boy, Kevin Correa of the Twins is looking good as is Kyle Loshe who should have been Targets this Off-Season to help this aging Staff..
Phils only Hope this Season is with their Big 3 and to be honest, they collectively are not very good anymore..MLB has gotten younger and better
A rooms the board while the Phils have gotten older and older over the last few Seasons.. They will struggle to finish with a .500 Record
And that’s the reality of the 2013 Season

Phillies didnt want Lohse because they have Pettibone, Morgan and Biddle all close…

Speaking of overpaid I am glad we didnt pay for BJ Upton WOW he stinks, his brother is sick though (for now).

I am also glad we didnt pay Werth who is schedule to make 20+ million for the next 5 years through age 38…

Sometimes you have to take a step back to move forward. Moving forward we have potentially 2 aces in the making in the minors, ceasar hernendez looks like a fine utley replacement but looks like he may lack power, and asche will take over 3rd. We need to find some outfield assistance though.

Maybe the Phils can get back to actually Drafting and Developing some of their own Players who can contribute at the Major League Level and not rely on Free-Agency (where everyone is overpaid) or trading young Prospects for Aging Players who are past their primes..
How come Teams like the Oakland A’s, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay,Washington Nats, Arizona,Texas Rangers, Twins year after year bring up and play quality home-grown Talent that are fundamentally sound, have high Baseball IQ’s and the Phils just seem to be unable to do so..

I don’t know the rules for the designated hitter, since the game was so out of hand could the Phils have given Delmon some work in the outfield down 14-2 with a switch after starting him at DH.
Josh Hamilton went 0-8 in the angles 19 inning loss to the A’s. He is hitting .202, ouch.

I believe once you are Designated hitter to start the game, that you cannot take a field position once the games starts
You can have a Pinch hitter bat for a designated hitter
But the DH cannot play in the field
Someone can double check this, but I’m pretty sure

Ben Revere went 0-3 to bring his average down to .200

that dam Carlos Ruis is no Quintero how can we expect Halladay to work with that– LOL but maybe it would have been a good idea to keep the Halladay/ Quintero pitching team together and release Kratz ( food for thought)

Calos can’t function, with his AHMMM, help! Prior to last season, he was nothing more than a mediocre hitter, that did nothing but K, & hit into DP’s! After this year, they need to purge this roster clean! I wouldn’t re-sign, any of the FA’s, including Chooch, Utley, Halladay, & both Youngs. They need to fire the dildo, that is our GM, so we can have someone, who is proactive, & with competence, to start laying groundwork, for Lee, Rollins, Papelstiff, Durbin, Brown-stain, & anybody else they can flush! I would even swallow a chunk of Howards contract, under the right circumstances (highly unlikely). Bring up Ruf, Ashe, Joseph, DeFratus, Stutes, Pettibone for good, Morgan, Martin, Diekman, & Hernandez, to see what we got. At the very least, we’ll get youth, effort, energy, excitement, & a give a f^#@ attitude, that these has-been’s & never-will-be’s are giving us!!!!! Clean house Montgomery! Step in Middleton, & start throw around your weight, with your Majority ownership! This is embarrassing, nauseating & unacceptable!!!!!

Halladay needs to reinvent himself. Not sure what that will take,

Still could be a 2nd or 3rd place team.

2nd or 3rd Place Team in the NL East Division or in the National League…
Phils are not in the same league Talent,Passion,Coaching or Playing wise
than the following 8-10 Teams in the National League Nationals,Braves,Reds,Cardinals,Pirates,Brewers,Diamondbacks,GIants,Dodgers and maybe even throw in the Rockies..
With an easier Inter-League Schedule than Past Seasons, the Phils are already screwing that up by losing 3 out of 4 Games thus far versus the Royals/Indianas..
