An Early Look At The Potential 53-Man Roster

DefensiveLine1The Eagles have yet to strap on the pads, but they undoubtedly headline Philadelphia sports conversations.  Somehow, news about player attendance for voluntary practice has trumped the Phillies.   The dissection has begun of Chip Kelly’s “personality” as a coach.  The questions, the rumors and the speculation are all sizzling; this is an entirely “new” era of Philadelphia Eagles football.  Looking up and down at the current roster, figuring out the starting quarterback, which skilled players are required for both the new offensive scheme and 3-4 hybrid base defense; I penciled in my starting 53 man roster.  I had some fun with it, breaking out the crystal ball to decipher the final player cuts.  The list does not include a name or two that may be added, mainly veteran depth at linebacker and cornerback.  In the end, I have a few surprises, a couple of minor trades, but I’d argue with anyone that 90% of the names listed below will be suiting up in the midnight green on September 9th.

QB (3) Vick, Barkley, Dixon (Foles traded)

The current hype with Foles getting more of the “snaps” to Vick is to sell high.  If an offensive minded coach like Kelly believes in the cement legged quarterback, the Eagles can be persuasive with landing a new home for him.  Kelly doesn’t see Foles as a long-term plan; and why should he?   I agree that Foles made us believe on a future without a running style quarterback as he showed the passion last year, especially in the game in Tampa Bay.  Nick also had several interceptions dropped and lingering questions outweigh answers with his skillset to be a long term stay in the NFL.  He has the size, but he was a 3rd roundd selection last year, most knew little about him, only to over hype his preseason and mediocre production during the season.  Much of the Foles love has to do with the Vick hate, the tired fan who witnesses the turnovers and injuries like a bad nightmare.  Barkley was a 4th round guy, but was a first round prospect at one point, they traded up to get him and he will see significant playing time this season.   Barkley has Chip licking his chops, your future quarterback fellow Eagle fans, embrace it now.

RB (3)-McCoy, Brown, Jones

All those Chris Polk fans, Felix Jones is a former first round back, who can catch and has pro experience in the return game, he will solidify the running back depth charts for the 2013 season.  I expect McCoy to look like player who made us draft him top three in fantasy football last year.  While the fumble issues of Brown worry me, I saw the flashes last year that have m excited of his potential, and Kelly likes to run the ball.  This will have to be something we become comfortable witnessing.   This is no longer a team where the second and third string running backs simply serve as names on a depth chart.  Kelly will run the ball, this is who he is.  All three of these backs will have the opportunity to make plays.

WR (6)- Jackson, Maclin, Benn, Cooper, Johnson, Sheppard

If you are already missing the sure handed Jason Avant, he will likely find a job with an offense with the need for a veteran wide receiver who is tough but does little after the catch in play-making terms.  He could find a home with the Vikings, Jets, or Lions in a trade nabbing the Eagles a 2014 6th round pick and a conditional 2015 pick.  The Eagles will start the 2013 season with half of their receiving core over the six foot measurement.  It’s more than speed; it’s about taking advantage of the matchup the defense is giving you with how Chip Kelly and crew run the show.

TE (4)- Celek, Ertz, Casey, Harbor

The fact that Harbor’s name was witnessed on the defensive side of the ball strikes some fear in me that he won’t make the squad; but I don’t see an undrafted player or little used Igwenagu making the squad.  Celek is the big possession wide receiver, he just needs to re-claim the hands he had a few seasons ago when he was ranking as a top ten tight-end.  Ertz is going to get significant playing time and has the big play potential.  Casey is bit of a wildcard, able to line up both in the backfield and as receiver.  Harbor is a very gifted athlete, and I believe having a coach who uses multiple tight ends, his veteran resume will give him the nod in what I feel will be one of the final roster spot decisions.  Kelly will deploy tight end formations like we have yet to see, the options to choose from will include three veterans and a top second round rookie.

O-Line (9)- Peters, Hermanns, Kelce, Johnson, Mathis, Kelly, Reynolds, Barbe, Menkin

The fire-fighter Danny Watkins will be known as another bust for first round selections made by the Eagles.  When I listen to him talk, I don’t hear a football player and when coaches watch him on the field, I don’t believe they see a starting offensive guard at the NFL level.  Lane Johnson will be the starter at right tackle for the start of the season, and I think Hermanns will get back to form playing the guard position.

DT/NT-(5) Dixon, Geathers, Cox, Thorton, Logan, Sopoaga,

Last season Thorton and Dixon were the big bodies at DT, both weighing in at a little over 300 pounds.  In the hybrid scheme, Dixon who makes a second go around with the Eagles; is accompanied by Sopoaga and Geathers as men who will bring beef in both the 4-3 and 3-4 schemes.  Cox had a very good rookie campaign, and could see an invitation to the 2014 Pro-Bowl if he continues in the same direction.  Thorton will be joined by 3rd rounder Logan, serving as gap clogs in the running game.   Please know that the statics for nose tackle and defensive tackles in the 3-4 schemes are marginal.  The players close gaps, take on the offensive line, consume the dirty work so the linebackers can rack up the statistics that glorify a productive season.

DE/OLB- (9) Curry, Cole, Square, Graham, Brown, Kendricks, Ryan, Barwin, Acho

Will Curry, Graham, Brown, and Cole all ease into the expectations of playing the pass and not just rushing the quarterback?  I can’t tell you an answer, but I do believe they will experience time both in the four point stance as well as drop back coverage.  This will not be the wide nine/4-3 scheme that immediately transforms into the 3-4.  There are pieces in place, but not a defense in place.

CB-(5)Fletcher, Williams, Boykin, Marsh, Poyer,

Remember when Asante was traded to Atlanta for nothing because we were so strong at the cornerback position?  Not so much the case, it’s all new, all uncertain, and suspect to say the least.  Williams looked good with the Ravens last year.  Fletcher is a physical player, with an injury history that worries us as fans.  Boykins had a decent season, but his size limits us to expectations to what he can do besides being a strong nickleback/slot style player.  Marsh is a former third round guy who has barely scratched the surface, and Poyer is a rookie who had a great collegiate resume, but the NFL is a different game.  We need help at this position, I see a trade acquiring a veteran being announced by week two of the preseason.  Target a player you like Eagle fans, I’ll all about helping this young, unproven area.

S- (5) Allen, Chung, Coleman, Wolfe, Anderson

I wish Kenny Phillups could stay healthy.  He has the size and has shown the ability to be a big time starter in this league.  I see Allen and Chung as your starters, and Kelly liking the special teams play and work ethic of both Coleman and Anderson to keep them on this roster.  Wolfe is a kid who loves to hit, Philly will really like what he brings to the field.  The safety position is not sexy.  Since the Dawkins departure we have used two second round picks as replacements, and we have nothing to show for it.  Very little money and contractual obligation is dedicated to this position.  We will see what we have, but hopefully the improved pass rush and linebacker play will defuse the focus on this mediocre area of our defense.

ST-(3) LS- Dorenbos, PK-Henery, P-Jones

Does it bother you as much as me that we waste a roster spot on player who is known more for his magic tricks than his NFL resume?   Bartrum was at least our third tight-end, Dorenbos; you have the ultimate gig in the NFL.  Henery still worries me with field goals past 45 yards.  Jones is yet another punter we hope can last more than just a season or two.

Well Philadelphia, this is your 2013 football team.  Like them or love them.  Hate them or have hatred for me?  So much is the same, yet quite different with a new sheriff in town calling the shots.  You feeling lucky or browsing the web for 2014 mock drafts to see who the next starting quarterback is going to be?  Let the sports mind unravel and true passion be heard, this is your sounding board!

GMCliff I agree with you. How the hell can you possibly trade a guy with 6 tds, 5ints and 5 fumbles who only lasted 6 games before he was on IR with a broken hand. Hell he was a high 3rd round pick only the 8th QB taken in the 2012 draft. That would be ridiculous. I wouldnt trade him for Andrew Luck, noway. Quite honestly I think Nick Foles should of been drafted #1 last year. We got a steal. I heard Tom Brady called Foles up to ask him about coverages.

Lol!! I know your being sarcastic Dag, but I think Nick will improve if given a chance to start again. He is the best pure QB on this team, even more so than Matt Barkley. Good to hear from you brother.

The 6’7 cat? Yeah…reports from OTA’s have been meh on him. What I’m most curious about is whether Avant makes the team. I don’t think he’s a lock…Celek (a TE I know) may not be a guarantee either.

I don’t know – the receiver situation is going to be an interesting one.

That is the consensus around the league that Foles will be traded. They are letting him show what he can be traded at highest value.. teams that run the old school west coast offense will give up maybe a 2nd round pick

Good lord,

Willie McGinest and Wilcox dithering on trying to continue the “the only way the Eagles can WIN NOW! is with Vick” garbage and dropping stupid platitudes like “Vick fits the mold of what Chip Kelly likes” mean nothing more than a big pile of diddly-squat.

You know what desn’t mean shit?

33 year old has-beens going 9 of 17 in 7 on 7 drills.

Vick is cut by training camp so that he perhaps gets a chance to latch on to another team (though there will be less suitors than I think he would expect)

Foles and Barkley are the future, Vick is a distant memory.

No one is getting cut by training camp.

Vick and Foles likely both won’t be here in September. I think they may view Barkley as the future – not a fan of that necessarily – but that’s what it looks like.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Michael Vick admits he “never paid attention” in fumbling drills.
Vick, 33 this month, is adamant Chip Kelly is the first coach to teach him how to properly carry the ball. “As crazy as it may sound, I never carried the football correctly,” Vick said. “And that’s partly my fault because my coaches always got everybody in a circle and did a four-points-of-pressure drill, and I never paid attention, thought I was doing it right. Now I know how to hold it. It feels comfortable, it’s tight.” Vick averaged 10.3 fumbles the past three seasons, but it sounds like that number will finally be coming down in 2013. Who knows what else Kelly might teach his veteran quarterback.

So it was “the circle”

That was the problem….4th all time fumble %age and its because he was outside the circle looking in!

Those meanie-head coaches never invited him in to the circle! Bullies!

But at least “now he knows” Chip Kelly is the bestest bestest coach ever!

More Gold:

“My completion percentage has been around 60 percent for the last three years, so I think I’m doing something right.”

Vick wastied for 25th in accuracy last year, right below other notable superstars like Matt Cassel, Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Tannehill, but a full 0.5% above Brandon Weeden, so that’s where he must have got the “something right” bit.

Vick will have to be heads and above Foles to make the 53 Man Roster
If Vick is just so-so during Camp and early Pre=Season, than he is a goner
the Wildcard is how well QB Dixon plays who will have the same package of Plays that Vick will run and if Dixon looks more adept at handling the Offense, then Dixon is in and Vick is out.. So it could be a Foles,Dixon,Barkely QB Corps coming out of Camp and I would be very happy if this is the case..

Jeff, think I have to agree with Paulman – the future is with Foles, Barclay, and /or the QB we draft next May. I can’t see Vick grasping Chip’s system and mistakes will not be tolerated. If we were going to trade Foles this year, he would already be gone!

Butch007

Chip has a rather large chip on his shoulder (pun intended.) He doesn’t want to be known as the coach with the “Tim Tebow coaching mentality”… he drafted Matt Barkley when he could have grabbed a scrambling QB earlier to start to prove publicly he’s not a “One Trick Pony”, he’s been talking about utilizing TE’s the same way the Patriots do which is also a departure from the pure “Read-Option Offense.” I think Vick doesn’t win the starting job in training camp and gets traded or released. I also think they will release Dixon and add a controversial 3rd QB either Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow or even Jamarcus Russel. Remember…Kelly can flush the position and start all over next year if necessary.

QBs:
Foles Barkley, ???

RBs:
McCoy, Brown, Polk
(my suspicion is that Jones will get injured in training camp and either get released if he can get back before the end of training camp or be on the IR)

WRs:
I don’t think Benn or Cooper make the team. Avant should make it and unless Momah pulls a Billy McMullen in training camp or the live games he will probably make the team. (I don’t think Chip Kelly goes out and grabs this Harold Carmichael like guy with the intention of releasing him) Interesting tid bit McMullen is a Detroit Lion as of now.

TEs:
make sense to me

O-Line:
I think the Jaycen Kelce experiment is over. I don’t even think he was practicing with the starters at the OTAs and it’s not as if he was held out as best as I can tell.

DTs:
Make sense (I hope they turn the big guys loose a little bit more often than what’s seen in 3-4 systems Cox seems like a player that can be disruptive and can get behind the line when he wants to.)

DEs/OLBs:
makes sense

CBs:
makes sense

S:
makes sense (* the sucky possibility is that Phillips only stays healthy through the first couple of games and Anderson is lost, so no extra help on STs)

Misc:

No. Foles will have to be heads and shoulders above Vick to make the team. But anyone who thinks Foles is a shoe in for the starting job, missed the part where they decided to bring Vick back instead of name him (Foles) starter.

You continue to insist on the illogical. If there are 2 equal players, the only logical choice is to keep the younger one. Especially on a rebuilding team.

If the 2 are equal (they won’t be, but I’ll humour you), the only logical choice is the 24 yr old, not the 33 year old.

It is Vick that has to be amazing to make this team, and from all reports so far…he isn’t.

skayne
skayne
June 3, 2013 9:24 pm

The problem is they aren’t equal players. Foles hasn’t done anything in the NFL and doesn’t have anywhere near Vick’s physical abililty. You live in an alternate universe where Foles lit it up last year and was highly successful. In this reality, He went 1-5 and showed some good traits and some bad traits. That’s why Vick is back. Kelly said when he looked at the QB landscape, it was a no-brainer bringing Vick back. When he said that, he was also talking about our roster.

I know you like to grab on to any report that you think gives Foles an upper hand, but talking about the one report where they said Foles completed 22 of 29 and Vick completed 9 of 17 is weak sauce. Any statement by the coaches, any positive report on Foles, you latch onto as if it where the the Holy Grail. Any statements from those same coaches giving praise to Vick or positive reports of Vick you meltdown and criticize that report or coach giving the assessment.

So when coaches give praise to Foles- THEY ARE THE SMARTEST COACHES EVER!

Praise of Vick- HOW CAN THESE IDIOT COACHES NOT KNOW THAT VICK’S A BUM?!!?!!!

On another thread I pointed out to Vinnie a VERY detailed report on Foles performance on Tuesdays OTA’s that also was favorable to Vick – what did he do – sear the part about Vick wasn’t very detailed so it was wrong (mind u completely ignoring the detailed section on Foles) and latched on to a report that gave those estimated numbers (though other reports had Vick doing better in Friday in OTAs) – as a SIGN that Vick was getting cut prior t training camp.

The other factor – age isn’t an issue for Kelly. He’s already made that clear – if it was Vick wouldn’t have been resigned to begin with. But there’s no talking to Vinne – he has a serious hatred for a man who doesn’t affect him at all – and can’t hear anything to the contrary.

” Especially on a rebuilding team.”

This team isn’t a rebuilding team. It’s not. The Eagles can (and will try to) win the division next year. The East is soft – And Vick has consistently shown he can beat the bricks off NFC East teams – so that’s def a point in his favor – But if you honestly think Kelly isn’t trying to win now you’re foolish – Kelly has done nothing but win with inferior talent no less his whole college coaching career.

Whoever he chooses as the starter will be the person who he thinks is in the best position to help the team win now. Truthfully, I think they are grooming Barkley for the future. Vick for this year – and Foles as trade bait.

But we will see.

If Chip/Eagles made it clear that his age, ability, health etc are non issues..they would have never trashed his old contract and gave him a pathetic take it or leave it deal that clearly states he is not the future QB of the team. Its clear evidence. How many starting Qbs around the league in the offseason get their contracts cut like that? Only the bums that will be out of the league sooner than later. A one year incentive based deal, with no security at all, screams you are basically done as a QB in the NFL. Yet, only lunatics on here think that deal is a positive.
Hell out of our 4 Qbs, all have money on the books for the following year except one…yes everyone except Vick. But yea the guy that is not on the books for 2014, when everyone else at the position is, is the one they want for the future of the team lol.

They could have cut Vick and not paid him anything. If you honestly think Vick would have not been picked up had he been cut from the Eagles then you don’t know anything about the NFL.

They could have gotten Carson Palmer for 5 million for the ENTIRE year instead of giving Vick a 3.5 signing bonus and min 7 if he’s on the roster day one and more than likely 9 million (the incentives are very attainable).

So they could pay him NOTHING and be done with him and move on to the future – but that’s not what they did. They resigned Vick and signed Barkley – that makes Foles the odd man out more than likely.

No guarantees on that – Foles could surprise – but Barkley is the future and my guess is Vick is the stop gap.

He doesn’t get 7 million on openind day,

If he’s on the roster opening day (which he will not), then his base salary will be 3.5 million (24th in the league – where he belongs) with another 3.5 mill available with ridiculous incentives like 90% of the snaps and winning the SB.

None of these things will happen.

Vick had a contract that would pay him 15 million. He now has a contract that will pay him 3.5 million.

The spring 3.5 million bonus was probably just paid because they were so far below the salary cap or something.

One year incentive laden deals are for guys you want to bring in for one last chance….maybe they have a little bit left in the tank….

He doesn’t – not that the tank was all that important in the first place.

Oh and Skayne…”no where near Vick’s physical ability”

Who gives a shit. They’re quarterbacks. If a quarterback is running in the NFL, you team isn’t going to win anything – especially long term.

The ability to throw a ball 70 yards in the air or run a 4.4 have never, ever, been important pre-requisites for championship QBs.

Quite the opposite actually.

Once again the incentives AREN’T THAT DIFFICULT – the only mill he wouldn’t likely see on that contract is the super bowl.

So he’ll be a 7 mil backup come opening day if he’s not starting – which is why I said if he’s on the roster come day one he’ll see 7 million (including his signing bonus) and another 2 mil if he meets the non-superbowl incentives.

They aren’t gonna pay him 9 mil to be a backup.

Trade Foles? Isn’t he the same style QB as Barkley? Didn’t Foles have stats compared very favorably to highly successful QB’s as rookies? Wasn’t his 40 time comparable to Tom Brady? Would you trade Brady too since he is slow?

Vick is the best quarterback on the team.. Foles is slow but I do like his height and his arm is not as strong as vick’s.. Barkey I assume has a weaker arm than foles but plays faster.. Foles takes his time whcih may not be a bad thing if they can incorporate that into what theyre trying to do .. But since Chip kelly is all about running as many plays as possible it makes people think that foles is going to be traded.
