Notes From The Phillies’ 7-5 Win Over Milwaukee

brownstarThe Philadelphia Phillies snapped their three-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Brewers 7-5. Their record improves to 27-30.

  • The Phillies jumped out to 7-0 lead in the first two innings, and their early outburst would prove to be enough for them to get the win.
  • Cliff Lee pitched 7.2 innings, and allowed three runs while striking out 11. He earned his seventh win of the year and his ERA stands at 2.45.
  • Lee cruised through the first seven innings without giving up a run, but ran out of steam in the eighth inning. The lefty recorded two outs, but also gave up four singles in the inning. He left the game with two runners on the base, and the bullpen allowed two inherited runs to score.
  • Domonic Brown just won’t stop hitting the ball. Brown went 3-3 on the day, and began the game with a three-run home run, his 16th of the year. In the second inning, Brown hit an RBI triple. He also drew a walk, and was a double shy of the cycle.
  • Jimmy Rollins returned to the starting lineup, and went 2-3 with a double and scored two runs.
  • Cesar Hernandez got another start at second, and went 0-4.
  • Erik Kratz went 1-4 with an RBI.
  • Ryan Howard got an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
  • Justin De Fratus got the final out in the eighth inning, although he allowed two inherited runs to score and gave up an earned run of his own.
  • Antonio Bastardo got the save, but also allowed a run.

Final Thoughts

Cliff Lee and Domonic Brown are the best reasons to watch the Phillies right now, and both players paved the way for the team to snap their losing streak and salvage a game from this series.

Lee has now gone seven straight starts with at least seven innings pitched and three runs or less allowed. He’s the stopper every fifth day, and his run of great pitching is keeping the Phillies afloat.

Brown is the team’s star of hope right now. He’s making the team watchable every night, and every time he steps to the plate I get excited. I actually feel like I can expect something dynamic out of a Domonic Brown at-bat, and this is something I haven’t been able to say about any player in this Phillies lineup since 2009 when Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jayson Werth were still in their primes.

Per Sources out in Anaheim,
Phils Trade Cliff Lee & Dom Brown, Chase Utley for OF Josh Hamilton and RHP Joe Blanton .. Charlie Manuel’s first comment ” I can’t wait to see Blanton run the Bases again in the NL”
Lee goes to on to have .5 Straight 20 Win Seasons while Dom Brown wins 3 AL MVP Awards in the next 5 Seasons,
Hamilton last 1 Season as he is found unconscious one late Sepember on Admiral Wilson Blvd in Camden and Joe Blanton remains the #4 Starter for the Phils and then goes into the Restaurant Business opening up a breakfast place called “Blanton’s Pig’s in a Blanket”
Only in Philadelphia .. Good Grief…

Beers made it in that order twice, seems to me you need to prioritize and put beer right at the top, family close second

07:16 AM ET 06.03 | When it comes to buying, a team would prefer to make an impact rather than merely a trade. [There] aren’t many players who can give you that impact who are also available. Who would be the No. 1 guy available? After asking the question to a couple dozen executives, scouts, and players over the past few days, the consensus was Phillies lefthander Cliff Lee. Lee, who would have to waive a limited no-trade clause, would improve a number of teams. The Red Sox, Orioles, Indians, Angels, and Rangers are some that would really benefit from a Lee deal, but there could be many more, including the Dodgers (because they can) or the Yankees. … One American League executive indicated there would be 20 teams lined up for Lee.

Time for ‘Dubs’ and Charlie to retire.

I watched both DeFratus and Bastardo when they came in to relieve Lee, and then both almost blew the game for Cliff Lee.

Why?

Because they both were afraid…Nibble, nibble, nibble…They are afraid to throw a strike…With Bastardo, he has a good fastball, good stuff, but his head is all messed up and he is afraid to attack a hitter…This doesn’t mean throwing a fastball ‘straight down the pipe’, but, if you have the stuff, you must use it…These guys walk the leadoff batter way too much, a recipe for losing.

At least the Phillies had someone watching the replay when the Brewers catcher hit that ground rule DOUBLE in the 8th…Charlie came out, and he never likes to argue with an umpire…So that saved them a run.

But both he and Dubee are way past their time…And the time NOW is for aggressive managing and attitude with this team, and no more sloughing off bullshit performances from the players.

Per Sources out in Anaheim,
“Phils Trade Cliff Lee & Dom Brown, Chase Utley for OF Josh Hamilton and RHP Joe Blanton …”

Wait: you’re underestimating Reuben Amaro…He would get the Angles to include a ‘top prospect’ in the deal.

Charlie Manuel’s first comment ” I can’t wait to see Blanton run the Bases again in the NL.”

Almost…Charlie: ‘Baseball can be a funny game…Blanton always was a steady guy for us, won us some big games, and he’ll settle down some of our young pitchers… I can’t wait to see him run the bases in the NL again!…Hamilton?…Yeah, he’s had some problems this year, but at the same time, he’s an experienced guy who can do some damage for us.’
