Micheal Vick Has His Best Day At Training Camp

EaglesQuarterbacks10Michael Vick has been stepping up his game at training camp.  Yesterday was his best practice and this was after having a good day on Monday.  Still this didn’t give him an upper hand in the battle for the starting quarterback spot because that’s going to be decided by the preseason games.

He made quite a few outstanding passes by throwing the ball early and putting it on target in a place where only the pass receiver had a shot at it.   He usually waits until he is sure the receiver is open before letting the ball go.  He’s not normally an anticipation thrower, but he was a number of times, yesterday because he seems to be getting used to some of the plays. Vick had a number of passes dropped or his completion percentage would have been higher.

One time he faked the handoff in the read option and came off the corner like he was shot out of cannon.  I’s sure Chip Kelly noticed it because I think the time he commits practicing on the read option shows that he wants to run it and Vick is the one who can run it.

I thought yesterday was Vick’s best day at camp and it contrasted with bad days by both Nick Foles and Matt Barkley.

“When the pads come on, it’s almost like game simulation,” Vick said. “I feel like guys around me have potential to hit, and it’s more like live action. I try to treat it like a game, try to approach it like a game, like there’s a lot on the line. I approach practice with a different mind-set.”

Vick made a great throw to the back shoulder of DeSean Jackson for a touchdown on the last play of practice.  It was fitting end for Vick on his best day of camp.  Still it was just one day and one day doesn’t a great camp make. Vick also hit Jackson on a deep pass earlier in the day when he beat rookie Jordan Poyer.

All the quarterbacks talked about how the like the way Chip Kelly is seeing what plays they’re most comfortable with, so that he can tailor the playcalling to them when they’re in the game.

“To have the opportunity to run the plays that you like, to make suggestions, it only gives you comfortability – the ability to put the team in the right situations,” Vick said. “That’s the relationship that Chip is developing with all the quarterbacks. We embrace that. We don’t take it for granted. We understand if we’re asked a specific thing to do or that we like, it’s imperative that we make sure we’re 100 percent right on it all the time and we know we can get it done. It’s part of the growth process.”

Foles was picked off yesterday by safety Colt Anderson because the quarterback got tunnel-vision in looking at the running back who was running an option route on a defender.   He beat his man inside and Foles let the ball to complete the pass.  There was only one problem.  Anderson was free in the middle playing centerfield and waiting for the throw.

Like Vick, the former Arizona signal caller likes the way Kelly listens to them regarding what plays they would like to run.

“I think in different situations, there are plays that you lean on and coaches want to call plays that we’re comfortable with because they know that if we’re comfortable and we’re good at running that play then there’s a better percentage that we’ll perform in a stressful situation, say two-minute (offense), or the clock’s coming down and it’s fourth down-and-8 or something,” said Foles. “They want a play that we know is our bread and butter. So it’s great when a coach asks you what you like in those situations. It’s very refreshing.

Barkley really struggled yesterday.  His completions were rare and his best asset, accuracy was missing.  The rookie said he’s not that concerned about incompletions because he’s not working with the top receivers.  Many times his group of receivers have trouble getting open.

“I’m not worried about numbers; I’m worried about accuracy, making sure the ball is in the right place,” Barkley said. “And even the final product is going to be different, because [the receivers] are not going to end up where DeSean [Jackson] would be on a play like that.”

I’m still not crazy about the quarterback play.  Vick still pulls the ball down and is looking downfield with the risk of making an ill-advised decision.

This could get ugly.

It has been reported Foles had more 1st team reps and had a couple of deep passes completed. It was his best day in pads. Just the facts.

Sheil Kapadia said in his practice observations that their were no pads on today, and the team is indoors. Foles is a star when the pads are off, but Vick’s been the one who’s better on all the days with pads.

I still believe in Foles. It’s about live games, not practice. If anyone thinks Vick is the guy, then they are just fooling themselves. We know what Vick can do, and that’s either turn the ball over, or get injured.

Vick is going to be the guy. Anybody that says differently is fooling themselves. Vick is the leader of this team and the guy that everyone looks up to. If this Riley Cooper situation showed anything, it showed that Kelly and Vick are working hand in hand. Kelly went to VICK and asked him to talk to the team. Cooper spoke with VICK first before he spoke with the rest of the team. You’re not going to place a guy like that on the bench. Kelly just won’t do it.

He showed his hand before he wanted to but it is what it is. Vick is the leader of the squad and won’t be losing his spot to a 2nd year slow footed QB anytime soon.

Ummm…

Don’t seem to remember you rallying behind Kolb when Reid chose him. I believe your term was “bum ass Kolb”

Don’t seem to remember you rallying around the choice of Casey Matthews, or Danny Watkins or any other shitty player that the coaches decided would be the starters.

Regardless….

Will I cheer for the Birds every game? Of course, but you’re not going to stop me from rolling my eyes with the patented once a quarter disasterous play that comes with Vick at the Helm. Nor will I be surprised when they happen with the exact same frequency they’ve been happening over his career.

Pretty damn hard to rally behind a guy you know will:
1 – Not win a championship as a QB of the Eagles
2 – Not improve over his career averages…he’s 33 man, he isn’t going to suddenly re-invent himself or show drastic improvement, no matter how much you wish it.

Rooting for Vick is like rooting for one of those degenerates you see in Atlantic city at 4:00 am watching the roulette ball spin around and around…..they know what’s about to happen, but they continue to hope….”maybe this time, maybe this time….”

And you can be damn sure I’ll be cursing Kelly as an idiot if he mistakenly gets seduced by the “promise” of Mike Vick.”

Root for Vick? I’d prefer to root for the coaching staff to come to their senses.

I log on to see Foles had a good day. I thought he finally came through, but per Sheil Kapadia, it was a day with NO PADS and indoors.

I have to admit, Foles is by far the best QB when the pads are off. When the pads are on, Vick’s been better everyday.

You think you know everything Vinnie, and that’s your problem. Vick’s the only QB on this team to lead his team to the playoffs. Matter of fact, he’s the only QB with a winning record. You like to cite misleading stats Vinnie, but no statistician or economist laying odds on who has the better chance to lead this team to the Super Bowl would give Foles the better chance.

Per your post yesterday, you have no objective evidence Foles is a better QB. You’re just willing to cross your fingers just to see what Foles has because he isn’t Vick.

Chip Kelly has said he isn’t here to cross his fingers about QB and tell the other guys we’re playing for next year. The best will play. Winning franchises in football don’t hand anything to anyone. Reid getting rid of McNabb off a playoff season before Kolb demonstrated he was actually better than McNabb was the first in a string of idiotic decisions. You want to waste the time of the talented players we have on offense so Foles can have a tryout in games that matter?

The average player’s career is about 3.5 years. They’re supposed to wait on a lesser QB? It’s funny that people want the best player on the field everywhere but QB.

Excellent post ! The best QB on the Eagles is Mike Vick…and everyone on the team knows it. While all of the pundits and Vick haters groaned how they want something ‘new’ and ‘fresh’…and “why not give Foles a shot”..because ‘maybe’ he can do it….
You hit it right on the head…Foles had his shot last year and no one came away with the impression that this guy is a franchise QB. The coaches have been giving more and more reps to Mike Vick with the key players on the first team…this is because Vick is a better passer than Foles AND he helps what Kelly really wants to do…RUN the ball.

Foles is not a lesser player than Vick. In fact, as you know, he played better than Vick did last year.

Right now they have been even throughout camp…one guy good one day the other guy the next.

When two guys are equal, and they have been…then the only choice is to go with the guy who is 10 years younger who has room to improve, rather than the 33 year old player on the downside of his stunningly mediocre career.

Cut the 23 year old kid who they were getting 2nd round trade offers for at the draft.

I’m glad you are not the GM.

The only guy that will be cut is the old man who won’t garner any trade interest across the NFL – though the ALouette QB will be retiring after this season, so there is still a chance for the former superstar to play somewhere.

It sounds from all reports that Vick is playing well this Camp thus far
And is winning the QB Battle.. I am on board if he continues to play well to lead this Team for the 2013.. Maybe this open-competition is bringing out the best of him which is better for the Team and as a fan, what I want to see, read & hear about.. If Coach Kelly names him the Starter, I am 100 % on board with it for all Players are getting the opportunity to perform and to compete for Starters Positions from Coach Kelly as it should be..lots of Time in Camp left and Pre-Season for all the Players to improve which is important to develop Depth and Unity for the Team as they move foward.. I will give you this Songs. IF the coaches make a colossal mistake and name Vick the starter, then Dixon has to be the backup.

They will have to try to trade Foles.

Foles cannot be the backup for 2 reasons:

1 – Potential QB controversy all year. The first Vickpick or sack fumble (1st Q of 1st game probably) and the Booooooos rain down. It will be disasterous

2 – Scheme wise its a ridiculous prospect. Run two completely different systems. Run the read-option with Vick for 4 games till he gets, then what? Suddenly become a west-coast team?

It doesn’t (in my opinion) work in either scenario.

On the flip side, there is no way Vick can be the backup here if Foles wins the job for the exact same reasons.

1 – When Foles struggles do to youth, there will be incredible to put Vick in. Another QB controversy. There will be a huge amount of “put Foles in” pressure. No one will be screaming for Dixon when Vick falters.

2 – You can’t just roll with one scheme all year, then suddenly change it half way through the season and hope that it just works out for the best.

I will admit….Vick is the “easy” choice for Kelly. Every national TV pundit will agree with the decision. If (sorry when) Vick struggles, the commentators will point to an oline in flux, Maclin’s injury, new system…whatever…it won’t be on Kelly, and it certainly won’t be on VIck.

Foles is the more difficult choice. With Foles you are announcing a radical departure. Sticking your neck out there. It says the Eagles are a long term rebuild, not a short term “we can win now” team. If Foles struggles, Kelly’s decision will be questioned all year.

I think Kelly is a smart guy and will pick only QB who has long term potential for the Birds, and that isn’t Vick.

But saying that, I don’t see how either Foles or Vick stays on the team if the other is named starter. Otherwise we’re going to watch a circus all year.

Vinnie…give it up! They are battling it out in camp and all of the Vick-haters in the media are now begrudgingly admitting that Vick is kicking Foles azz in the fair and square QB battle. The Players on the team see it too. Its simple…the best QB on the Eagles is Mike Vick…and I’m wondering if Dennis Dixon has been given a fair shot at the backup QB position. It probably should go like this:
1. Mike Vick
2. Dennis Dixon
3. Matt Barkley
cut-Foles give him a chance to hook on with someone else

my paragraphs got a little mixed up there, but you should be able to decipher it.

Yesterday Vick was 8 of 14 with a fumble…not as “crisp” as we are led to believe…while Foles was 15 of 18 with a couple of tds…..but anyway….

Going into today:

Vick 87 of 121, 5 TD, 1 INT
Foles 92 of 121 5 TD 1 INT

I believe they both tossed a couple more tds today.

All things being equal, youth must be served.

Vinnnie Vinnie wasn’t it reported Vick had 4 balls dropped. but anyway…

All things being equal give me the guy who can run 100% of my playbook over the guy that can run 60%.

Last but not least Vick at 32 years old is superior in all aspects of physical attributes that if you put a helmet on them Vick would seem to be the younger guy. Faster, better arm, stronger and tough as hell. Shit Vick at 45 I guarantee you physically would dominate Foles at 23. So age really isn’t a issue when comparing them 2.

Over the last 6 4 or 5 games(incl playoffs)…when we went 3-3 with 10 ints and 7 ints…and his comp % when from 55, to 60 to 55….

So ya pretty much…..by his last 2 games that year he was in the 55$ equal tds to ints range….

His “mvp runner up” status was again based on the hype generated by his first 5 or 6 games – again when the league had no film or experience on the guy. Once they did, they caught up fast and MV returned to the pedestrian QB we know him to be.

Was Vick great for 6 games? Yup.

Was he the same for the final 6 games? Nope.

In fact over the last 6 he was quite pedestrian. And over his last 2….he was flat out bad, highlighted by the patented deer in the headlights sack fumble and starting down wrs for ints that we’ve all come to love from the guy.

But Vickpologists love to avoid this reality and spout MVP year!

When the reality it was an MVP 6 game run, ending on that same Monday night they celebrate like it was the Super Bowl or something.

The media kept the dream alive though…they’re always late to the reality party….so apparently is Songs.

1 – Was wondering how long the “dropped balls” excuse would take….they’re dropping balls for everyone meathead.

2 – So now the read option is 40% of the offense? Anyway, Over his career Vick bails on about 25% called pass plays over his career….he can handle 30% more run plays, but will bail on 25% of the called pass plays…that’s a wash. so the 2 will both be operating the same % of the O.

3 – 23 upside 33 downside….difficult concept for you to grasp I know. McNabb is 35 and for all intents and purposes has been retired for 2 years. As a wise man once said, there are no old running QBs in the nfl.

4 – who gives a shit about running fast or throwing far anyway….neither of these 2 things has ever been a moniker for NFL quarterbacking success

And you bring up a great point Mehinski,

I read over and over about all of Vick’s special abilities…he is the fastest, the strongest, the toughest….in fact its been said over and over that there has NEVER been a player like Vick.

He has, as I’ve been told, incredible physical abilities. Perhaps the best running QB ever..

If that’s actually the case, then doesn’t that make his career an even greater disappointment??

How can a guy so especially, specially special only have 1 season with more than 8 wins.

I know I know its a “team game” – every single one of his teammates, coaches, and GMs have sucked.

Mike Vick’s specialness is countered only by his incredibly bad luck I suppose.

But seriously, for all the incredible arm strength, lightning speed, incredible reflexes….how come he keeps getting outdueled in the playoffs and otherwise by clearly less athletic weak armed plaooding qbs?

How come….dispite his awesome specialness, by the time this playoff season rolls around, it will have been a decade since he’s actually won a playoff game?
