With Maclin Injured and Riley Cooper Away, WR Arrelious Benn Returns To Practice

ArreliousBenn4Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper wasn’t at practice on Friday and Sunday because the team decided along with him that it would be best if he went and got some sensitivity counseling instead.  So now Cooper gets a pass on attending any of the Eagles practices or meetings.  They wouldn’t even tell us whether he’s still in the area or not.

Regardless of where he’s at, we know that he’s not in camp working on getting better as a wide receiver and making himself more familiar with Chip Kelly’s offensive system.

The bottom line on Cooper’s absence is that it was in his best interests and also in the best interests of the team.  That’s not good.  You’re a player on the team, but it’s in the team’s best interests for you to not be around.  Kelly says Cooper will return and remain on the roster, but you can tell that things could change depending on the reaction of the team when Cooper returns.

I think guys like Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy, Jason Avant, Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson will play a role in deciding his fate with the Eagles.  Kelly is likely to listen to what the guys who know him best say about Cooper.  If they want him back and can influence the rest of the players to fall in line, then Kelly is probably open to bringing him back.  If the guys want to rid themselves of the former Florida Gator, then Cooper will likely be out of here.

On Friday, little wide receiver Demaris Johnson took the reps with the first team and had a good day utilizing his quickness and speed to get open short and deep.  t thought Johnson was headed for an outstanding year when Maclin got hurt.  The little guy is nearly impossible to tackle in the open field because of his speed and quickness.  Teams were going to be focused on stopping Jackson and Maclin, when Kelly would be able to unleash Johnson on them with the quick screens and hitches, which would get the ball into Johnson’s hands in the open field in one-on-one situations.

As a starter, Johnson won’t be as much of a surprise to teams even though I don’t see him starting full-time.  I think the Birds will replace Maclin with the backup receivers as well as the two and three tight ends sets.  I think they’re going to give all the receivers who are in camp a shot at taking that starting job.

Rookie free agent Russell Shepard took the snaps with the first team on Sunday and he didn’t disappoint.  He beat Birds starting cornerback Bradley Fletcher deep on a straight fly route.  The ball was on the finger tips of the receiver and he pulled it in.  He’s got the combination of size and speed, which you want to see at that position.  I’ve seen quite a few of the qualities in him that are needed to replace Maclin.  You need both speed and size.  The former LSU wide out has some of both, which gives him an advantage over some of his competition.

Shepard has been one of the best wide receivers on the team throughout the training camp.  Now we want to see if he can be productive in game situations, starting on Friday against the Patriots.

Another guy who could be an answer at the Eagles wide receiver position is Arrelious Benn, who was acquired by the Birds this off season from Tampa Bay.  He practiced for the first time in a week on Sunday.  He wasn’t exceptionally productive in his first day back because he was working with the second team and third team during the workout.  Benn has 4.4 speed, but it didn’t seem like he got wide open in his first day back from a knee injury.

He was a former second round draft pick, who was sidelined by injuries at Tampa Bay.   It limited him to only 59 catches in three years.  He’s going into his fourth year as a pro and eager to prove he can be more productive.  This should be a break out year opportunity for him if he can stay healthy.  Maclin is sidelined for the season and who knows what’s going to happen with Cooper, so Benn could be at the right place at the right time for his career to explode.

The former Illinois star is in an offensive system which emphasizes the ability of the wide receivers to block and he has the size to block, as well as going across the middle and making the big catch.  Benn feels he can be a starter and be productive if he can stay healthy.  “I’ve got to stay healthy,” Benn said after practice on Sunday. “If I can prove to them I can stay healthy, I’ll be all right.”

Kelly said he liked what he saw of him.  “I was pleasantly surprised,” Kelly said. “You expect some rust, to be honest with you. I thought he was really good from a mental standpoint. He missed some insertion time because, obviously, he was out. We can’t stop insertion just because one guy is out. We called things today he had never run in practice before that he really picked up.”

I’ll keep an eye on Benn, but I don’t know if he’s going to ever be the player the Bucs thought he was going to be when he was drafted in the second round.   I don’t sense the confidence you need to be a top receiver.  It’s a very delicate balance between confidence and arrogance.  To me Benn definitely needs more confidence.

I also see a stiffness about him when he runs his routes.  He needs to get more fluid.  I see a player, who seems to have tight hips, which inhibit his ability to give the type of fakes you need to be able to give, if you want to flourish in the National Football League.  Still he has the size and speed to be a contributor in Kelly’s system.

Hopefully, he’ll be a productive player for the Birds because the way things are going at the wide receiver position they could definitely use the help.

I’ve been there a few times. Momah will make this team and that’s a guarantee.. He will be our num 2 easily.. It’s DJ, DJjr, Avant, Momah, Benn, Coop/Shepperd( depending if the keep coop).

I have to point this out. Brandon Graham is looking like a freakin nightmare for opposing offenses.

The Cooper situation is just going to incense a good portion of the team if he somehow gets a pass through summer camp and still makes the team as if what’s happened to him wasn’t of his own creation.

If D. Johnson starts the Eagles would officially have the smallest least physical starting WR in NFL history

Paulman, what do you think about the idea of the Eagles making a deal to bring in Aaron Mellette, from Baltimore and or Da’Rick Rogers from Buffalo, to add to the talent of our Receiving Corp?

Those Teams just Drafted these Players and I don’t see them trading them, do you…
I think with Maclin out & possibly Cooper getting released.. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Eagles check on a couple of reliable Veteran WR’s that are out there
Bu tI think the Eagles are ok with Benn,Sheppard & Momah to go along with D-Jax,Avant & Danrius Johnson.. They will be a run first Team and besides the deep ball on occasion, will mostly throw screens, quick outs and really will utilize the TE’s more in their Passing Game..
I can acutally see the TE’s collectively (Celek,Ertz,& Casey) catching more balls combined than the WR Corps..

pman… I also think we will see more catches from the TE’s but remember…. this has to be a spread O to really give room for the option. So…. I expect to see guys like Casey out of the backfield more.

If the birds are smart… and I think they are…. i think you will see….

Djax lined up on the right side of the field to streak and open things up.
The WR on the left will be the best blocker so he can tie up the outside.
Peters getting out wide left to lead the way.
Lots of pulling from the guards
Casey roaming the right flat to draw a LB with him
Vick and McCoy getting out wide left looking to run or flip it.

I strongly feel that this will be a play we see over and over again.

Could be Stevo

I think D-Jax lines up on left side and runs a Fly PAttern to drag the CB/Safety along with him
FB/HB Casey starts from the Backfield and moves in Motion to the Left Hand side and runs a 7-8 Yard Route out in the Flats,
TE Celek and crack down on DE with LT Peters pulling out to the left ahead of Vick & McCoy with Vick having the Option to Run, Pitch to MCCoy or hit Casey on a safe 7-8 Yard Route..
Remember with Vick being Left-handed, Rolls outs and flat routes are easier to do moving to his left..
This will be their Staple play run 10-12 Times a Game

The Eagles drafted Brandon Gibson, in the 4th round, and traded him that year to the Rams for Weatherspoon the LB. Not like it hasn’t been done, and is still being done.

Wow I looked at the Arizona Cardinals website and they have Honey Badger listed as a safety.Wow sounds like I was right. Now all that’s left is him becoming a player similar to Bob Sanders who I compared him to.

One NFL scout told KTAR Arizona rookie DB Tyrann Mathieu is already “pound-for-pound” the Cardinals’ best football player.
An offensive assistant added that “No. 32 (Mathieu’s number) is going to change the team.” Per radio personality Ron Wolfley, Mathieu’s quick development has been “nothing short of stunning,” and he’s done it while learning four positions: Outside corner, slot corner, safety, and special teamer. Mathieu is truly a stud, and will make himself impossible for the Cardinals to keep off the field. Aug 5 – 6:12 PM

Mellette was drafted in the 6th Round, and Rogers was undrafted. They may not have as much impact as some that were drafted, or drafted higher.

There are too many question marks with some of the veteran available, and some are just not good period, so I wouldn’t waste my time.

Benn, Sheppard, and Momah, have done what for you to feel confident that they fill Maclin’s shoes? I mean really?

Wishful thinking Paul. Its Mardy Gilyard all over again…LOL!! Come on Paul, Buddy, at least Rogers, and Mellette have big time potential. I know you agree with me there. Mellette may be placed on the practice squad, and Rogers will get time, but must play special teams.

We can do better than Benn, and Sheppard. I like Momah’s potential, but it may be 1/2 way through the year before he gets his feet wet.

Gmcliff,
Ravens are pretty thin at WR with Boldin gone
So Nelkete has a great chance of making their squad
After Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones, name another WR on Ravens ???

Rogers will also get plenty of reps and opportunities who lost their 2 top WR’s to Free Agency..

Both the Bills & Ravens have a real need at aware and if Mellete & Rogers gave good Camps, why would these Teams look to trade them ..
C’Mon Cliff, your reaching..

Tandon Doss, and Tommy Streeter. They also have a few big receivers in addition to Mellette that have potential.

Marlon Brown 6-5 205 4.47
Marcus Rivers 6-5 218 4.49
Rashad Carter 6-3 205 4.49
Gerrard Sheppard 6-2 211 4.47

All you can do is ask. Thats not reaching. If they feel that they’re expendable, then why not take a shot Paul?

How many NFL Receptions between Doss & Streeter..
Ravens & BIlls WR’s Positions are more wide open than the Eagles are.. Why would these Teams Trade a Talented WR that may be contributors on their Teams..
Now is you have a good 4th/5th WR on the Falcons,Packers,Colts,Giants whose opportuinities would be limited to make those Teams, then maybe you can a deal done
but the Ravens and BIlls need WR’s as bad or worse than the Eagles do GmCliff… C’Mon man, step it up, Summer is almost over..

Hey fellas I was at practice today, I stayed until the tenth phase of practice which was punt coverage. I couldn’t sit thru punt coverage, but my observations were this. Vick looked the best in the seven on seven drills, he was the only Qb that actually scored a TD in the drills. He still holds the ball a long time but Nick, and Matt did also. Foles had some bad passes here and there and couldn’t put it in the end zone. Matt had a similar result with his opportunity. It’s really hard to judge it fellas when they only have on shorts and a helmet. Momah caught everything in front of him, sheppard was good also. They did a great tribute for the arm forces, they really deserved it of course.

Michael Vick had taken the early lead in his battle with Nick Foles for the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback job under new coach Chip Kelly.

With a few more practices in the books, the veteran is starting to pull away. Vick has been “tremendous,” according to Reuben Frank of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, pulling away from Foles while rookie Matt Barkley has been relegated to third- and fourth-team snaps.

While it’s premature to declare the fight in Vick’s favor, it’s been our expectation all along that he would win decisively. Foles “hasn’t been bad at all,” per Frank, but he’s simply not as talented as Vick or as natural of a fit in Kelly’s offense.

According to “Football Outsiders Almanac 2013,” only six rookie quarterbacks since the 1970 merger had a lower touchdown rate than Foles produced in 265 pass attempts last season. He completed just 13-of-31 red-zone passes, gaining a total of 54 net yards.

The data we have on Foles suggests he’s a checkdown machine, while Vick challenges defenses down the field and in the red zone when he gets protection from his offensive line. The next step is to increase Vick’s reps at Foles’ expense as the Eagles gear up for preseason games

I was at camp today with my son too. Neither qb looked that great although Vick threw a real nice ball deep to Djax in the 11s. Foles also had a td to Djax. Otherwise they were both check down machines. Vick certainly didn’t look exceptional. The d got the better of most of the series because the wrs got no separation except Djax.

Both abs had some time with the 1s.

I kinda listen to Reuben Frank because he has supported Foles for the last 6 months. The checkdown machine wasnt posted for practice. It was actual stats in real game situations.

Bugs good to hear you made it thru punt coverage, I couldn’t take much more of that man. I did not see the 11’s bugs I left early so I will take your word on that part but with the seven on seven Vick looked better. But live action is coming fellas starting this Friday. I am pulling for Bark, but it doesn’t look good right now.

Damarius Johnson needs to be in the slot. If hes that dynamic, I know Avant is tough as nails and catches everything, but its time to get the playmakers on the field.

Nobody threw into the shatters today. Vick got the ball in the end zone today more than Foles did definitely. Vick’s footwork is much better than foles in the drills.Barkley did not look good in the 11s and he looked ok in the7s. Ertz dropped what shoulda been a score. They did move Ertz all over the field. Felix jones had a nice run. I thought that momah caught what got to him but he wasn’t getting open.

As for the Frank article he seems to talk about only nice plays but leaves out a lot of other plays that they didn’t make. Suggest you go to a practice Dag b4 you declare a winner.

I tell you that I was impressed by how fast Cox is. Nobody should be that quick when they are that big.
