Eagles-Patriots: What I’m Watching For

ChipKelly8Quarterbacks

  • I want to see how comfortable Michael Vick and Nick Foles look running an offense at a fast pace. Are they going to run things smoothly, or will we see some quick three-and-outs? The two quarterbacks need to run this offense quickly, but also effectively. They’ve got to make quick decisions, but they’ve also got to be good ones. Avoiding turnovers is essential.
  • Matt Barkley should get plenty of time to show what he can do, and he should be able to have a good night working against New England’s third team.
  • Do we really need to see Dennis Dixon or G.J. Kinne? Maybe Dixon for a series or two at the end of the fourth quarter, but I’d rather see the top three quarterbacks take all of the snaps.

Running Backs

  • I only need to see one or two touches for LeSean McCoy. No reason to put the team’s best player at unnecessary risk.
  • How will Bryce Brown look tonight? Has he been able to improve on his ball protection skills at all? The young Patriot defenders trying to make their team are surely going to be targeting Brown. If I was an undrafted rookie trying to make the New England defense, I’d be going after Brown, trying to force him into a fumble in order to better my chances of making the squad.
  • Chris Polk has been having a strong training camp, will that carry over into the first game?

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

  • Can any of the young wideouts step up and assert themselves as a candidate to make this team? Russell Shepard and Ifeanyi Momah probably have the best chance of the undrafted rookies to make the team, so they’ll certainly be worth keeping an eye on.
  • I can’t wait to see how Zach Ertz looks in his first game as an Eagle.
  • Clay Harbor has had a very good camp himself, and he’s going to need to make it difficult for the coaches to release him.
  • How will newcomer James Casey be utilized?

Offensive Line

  • Alan Barbre will get the start at left tackle in place of Jason Peters. Barbre, a former Packer, has been in the league for five years and he’s going to have a good chance to make this team, especially now that Dennis Kelly is out for the preseason. Let’s see how he holds up tonight.
  • How far along is Lane Johnson? He gets his first real action tonight as well.
  • Any chance that Danny Watkins has made some real strides, or has his talk of change and progress been nothing but hollow words?
  • As a unit, how well will this group hold up in pass protection and how strong will they be in the run game?

Defensive Line

  • Will Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton look good in their new roles as 3-4 defensive ends?
  • I want to see Antonio Dixon get a long look as this team’s nose tackle. Dixon has the size to play the position.
  • Will third-round pick Bennie Logan have any impact?
  • Does Vinny Curry have a future with this team?

Linebackers

  • How good will DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks work together on the inside of the new alignment?
  • Will Trent Cole or Brandon Graham emerge as one of the team’s starting outside linebackers?
  • Do holdovers like Jamar Chaney, Casey Matthews, and Phillip Hunt have any chance to make this team?
  • How about Emmanuel Acho, who Billy Davis coached last year with the Browns?

Cornerbacks/Safeties

  • Bradley Fletcher needs to give us a sign that he can succeed as a starting cornerback. If Fletcher fails, the Eagles are going to have some serious problems in their secondary, I don’t think they’ve got another legitimate starting corner on the roster.
  • Can fifth-round pick Earl Wolff make a push for a starting position?

Special Teams

  • I’d love to see a little life out of the kick and punt return games. The Eagles special teams have been so dreadful under Bobby April, it’ll be refreshing to see a new approach.

Final Thoughts

Speaking as someone who is not a fan of the Chip Kelly hire, I want the Eagles to show me just a little something tonight that gives me some kind of hope or optimism that maybe this is going to work out. Throughout the whole off-season and to this very moment, I’ve been mostly skeptical and cynical about the direction that the franchise has gone in since they hired the former Oregon coach and in general I just don’t have a good feeling about where this team is going to be this year and several years from now.

So now that a legitimate game situation has arrived, this is where the era really begins and I’d really like to see something positive to combat the doubts that I have about this head coach and his philosophies. That’s not to say that if everything looks awful tonight I’m never going to warm up to Kelly, but I’d just like to see a little something good tonight.

It doesn’t necessarily have to do with what the team accomplishes on the field. Kelly could impress me with how organized the team looks, and how he manages certain situations. For example, if the guy can get through a half without so much as burning a timeout in the painfully wasteful manner that we saw Andy Reid do throughout his tenure, then heck, I’d settle for that.

Any aspect, great or small, that is positive that the team can build off of, I’ll gladly take.

What I Liked in the First Half
Vick looked poised and prepared and focused
A great start for him
LT Barbre played well I thought
RT Lane Johnson was a little to reactionary in Pass-Protection
Insteadt of attacking holiday Defenders, he did very well in Rush Blocking
WR’s D-Jax & Avant look in mid-Season form
RB’s Polk & Brown looked quick, aggressive and decisive

Defensively
Liked DL Curry & Graham,& Logan, Square all looked good
LB Hunt was actimve as was Knot
CB Boynkin & Safety Chung were the only Secondary Player who looked like they knew where to be and what was going on
fletcher looked ok, #23 was lost

What I didn’t like
Punting on 4th & 3 on their 3rd Series around Mid-Field
Taking Foles after his TD Drive and put Barkley in way to early who is not ready for Prime Time
The Play of ILB’s Ryans & , Kendrick’s where the Palts were able to run the Vall at will right up the gut when #1’s were on the field
Then Cheney & Matthews looked even worse,
Major issues at ILB for this Defense
Trent Cole looks list out there
Expected more from the TE’s
Barkley is nowhere near ready to Compete even as a Vack-up,
Gets the Ball out too slowly with a weak arm
Safety K Phillips looks very tentative out there and is unable to let it rip
In fear on rein hiring his Knee
Tackling by Nate Allen is still Poor
He tackles too high, is not strong enough to complete his tackle
Perhaps his shoulder pads are a tad too big for him..
WR’s Cooper & Momah did very little
while Shepard looks like a Player with potential
TE’s were not as Active as I hoped..

Time for 2nd Half

agree with alot of what you observe Paulman
Cons
1.Matt Barkley did not look good, no zip on his passes.
2.James Casey was a waste of free agent resources —
3.All the MLBs looked bad — Ryans was pancaked by Mankins for a 60 yard play, Kendricks’ smurf body gets thrown over for a TD — Chaney was putrid and did nothing good and Matthews was making tackles but after first downs in his area.
4.Nate Allen crumbled under contact, Kurt Coleman was too slow to make plays — they are both too timid with no recognizing skills or anticipation to play in the NFL
Pros
1. Vick looked good. DJax too.
2. Jason Avant controlled the slot.
3. Lane Johnson is better than Dunlap and Bell an upgrade
4. Bryce Brown makes plays.( no Turnovers +)
5. Brandan Graham as a pass rusher should be on the field on 3rd and long on the left side against the right tackle.
6. Vinny Curry exists, he really does, I saw him. He isn’t just a mirage of a draft selection.

Paulman bet me $10 that chase wouldn’t sign for more than $10 million a year with the loser sending the proceeds to the charity of the winners choice. Then 2 hours after chase signed for $27 million over 2 years said that he was not paying and basically said fuck you to cancer and Children charities.

And for that you are a classless, poor, piece of shit lowlife Squelchers who has no integrity. I truely feel bad for every single parent, teacher, sibling and family member who had a hand in raising such an asshole. You should change your name from Paulman to Paulscumbag as you certainly have no manly qualities.

I would love nothing more then to spit in your face in real life, but since I cant the above will be my spit all day every day.

Paul, you liked Graham? Did you see his awesomeness, when LeGarrette Blount ran for his touchdown? He couldn’t even tackle him in open space, and was a liability in coverage all night. Brandon Graham is a situational pass rusher, ala Juqua Parker, and THAT’S IT; He’s a joke. What game were you guys watching?

Come on GM. I know Graham looked foolish on that play but so did the rest of the D. The offense just spent about 71seconds on the field and theDwas right back out there. I think that play was a result of the defense being fatigued. Look at his play as a whole. Your on record as not a Graham guy at all and I’m on record for being a Graham guy. If you look at his performance as a whole he did well. Even Chip had pointed that out last night at his presser.

He was burned in coverage all night!!!. He had a situational sack on the second string QB…BIG DEAL!! He didn’t stand out in anyway. What game were you watching? Look at him for what he is…an average situational pass rusher.

HIS ASS SHOULD HAVE BEEN TRADED!!

2Nd Half
Barkley looked good, got In a rhythm and got rid of the ball Quickly
TE Harbor having a very nice game
Undrafted Free-Agent LB Knott is the Best ILB
On the Eagles, has Batural Instincts, explodes to the ball and seems to be able to she’d Blockers that Kendrick’s, Ryans, Cheney & Matthews are unable to do
LB Acho has looked active at LB also

This defense sucks. Please don’t worry about a QB next year. You better concentrate on fixing this sorry defense.

We have some prospects that are growing, and have potential : Cox, Thornton, Curry, Square, Shady, Peters, B.Brown, D. Johnson, Jackson, but we need more than just bodies that endear our wishful thinking.

Did you hear Connor Barwins name at all last night? What did Chris Polk average 1 1/2 yards a carry? Bryce has nothing to worry about. We also have to make a trade for another WR, after Cooper, Avant, and D. Johnson, we have nothing.
