The Philadelphia Phillies lost the second game of their series with Colorado, falling 5-3 to the Rockies on Tuesday night. Their record drops to 55-69.
- Tyler Cloyd, having recently been recalled to take the injured John Lannan’s spot in the rotation, got the start tonight and pitched six innings while allowing five runs.
- Cloyd struggled early, allowing three runs in the first inning and a run in both the second and third frames. But the right-hander settled down after that and managed to give the team three scoreless innings to finish his night.
- The Phillies’ offense was miserable, picking up just three hits. However, the lineup still managed to score three runs, all coming in the bottom of the third.
- Chase Utley and Domonic Brown each drove in the team’s only runs.
- Darin Ruf went 0-4 with two strikeouts.
- Cody Asche went 1-4. He’s hitting just .197.
- John Mayberry got another start in center, and went 1-3.
- Zach Miner pitched a scoreless seventh.
- Caesar Jimenez pitched two scoreless innings to finish the night.
Final Thoughts
Tyler Cloyd finds himself in the same position he was a year ago. With the team completely out of contention, Cloyd will get a handful of starts from now until the end of the year to show that he can survive in the major leagues.
You can’t help but root for a guy like Cloyd. Realistically, he just doesn’t have to stuff to last in the majors. But he’s a guy that works hard and has to get by on smarts alone, much like former Phillie Jamie Moyer.
