Chip Kelly Names Michael Vick As Eagles Starting Quarterback

MichaelVick&NickFoles3Prior to the Eagles practice earlier today, Birds head coach Chip Kelly named Michael Vick as the team’s starting quarterback for the season.

“We’ve evaluated the situation, and Michael Vick is going to start for us against the Washington Redskins,” said Kelly. ”I met with all the quarterbacks this morning. They understand the plan and know where we are going forward.”

After practice Vick talked to reporters.

“Coach [Kelly] called me in this morning,” Vick said. “I told him thank you, I appreciate it and I won’t let you down.”

I think it’s been a good competition and like Kelly, i think the battle has forced both of them to raise their level of play.  I have been of the belief throughout the process that Vick was going to be the starter if he took care of the football.

Remember that he’s a former number one pick in the draft.  Kelly said the reason he kept Vick on the roster was because of his skill set.  His arm and his speed are amongst the best in the league and they fit this offense.  It would have been very difficult for Kelly to put a talent like Vick on the bench.

Kelly let everybody know that he doesn’t plan on changing quarterbacks anytime soon.  He has decided on going with Vick and if he can stay healthy, he will be the team’s quarterback.

“This is a one‑quarterback operation,” Kelly said during today’s news conference. “This isn’t going to be someone’s got to look over their shoulder or we’re going to alternate by series.”

Good Luck It is nothing that I would have done TBH. I do a standard and an IDP league. Arian Foster is a risk IMO…but I never go RB’s I had the 8th Pick In my league and Went

Brees
Demarius THomas
Reggie Wayne
Victor Cruz

I like AJ Green but the rest of your Team Sans Foster are average…Just my opinion though. I also took Ben Tate cause I have a feeling about Foster. I do like Cook at TE, Smith and Edleman might break out. TY has a shot too….I would have gotten some more star power at the top if you could.

Thats a very good fantasy team. Arian Foster will be fine. Injuries are sometimes over hyped. He’s going through SORENESS. Its not a vital injury such as a torn ACL or a groin injury.

Steven Ridley is a guy that had double digit touchdowns and over 1000 yards rushing. Ridley is a 1st round talent and im surprised he fell so far with you because im assuming Foster was your first pick.

AJ Green is the second best WR in fantasy behind Johnson in my opinion and Torrey Smith is a very good WR2 and could be a breakout 3rd year candidate.

You also have some very solid reserves and top 3 defense.

Rating is a A+

na mine is PPR league of 12; i was number 4 i realized Foster after i got him i could of easily reached for Lynch. everyone was going Rb/QB/WR they kind of turned it all around and it was snake so from 1-12 then round 12-1 so the wait so many players came off the board but i will see the next draft i will have a better idea.

Rich Hofmann (a real genius) writes that the Eagles should trade Foles. Wonder if he realizes that Vick has only played 1 full season. Wonder if he realizes that he is going too be 34 in a few weeks. Guess he thinks we should sign a 35 year old QB with a history of injuries and turnovers to a long term deal. Wonder what he thinks we can get for Foles ( a back-up CB or maybe a mid round pick). Unless you want a crack at Bridgewater, this is pure insanity. Good thing the press doesn’t work in the front office.

Vick earned the job flat out. He is 33, but hasn’t played every year and his injuries weren’t things that mad him loose a step. He doesn’t have a ton of mileage on him. His arm ability to run and this system gives us the best chance to win games. I’m not sure if that translates to actual wins on the field, and im sure every loss the Eagles have the Vick haters will blame him. That doesn’t mean as a team they should start Foles out of fear of the backlash. Props to Chip for starting the best player right now, this will give his earn it on the field philosophy more credibility. Had Foles been named the starter players would ask themselves what is all the competition talk then? I think he recognized that and made the right choice.

Vick outplayed foles this preseason over a limited exposure, but nonetheless based on this limited profile he had no choice but to start Vick, but….

The folly of this originates from the decision to bring Vick back after they fired Reid, that decision set this all in motion , and Kelly will regret this decision , Vick barely beat out a second year third round pick, we all know Vicks downside, we don’t know foles upside, but we do know how this will end, a glimpse of that was Vick’s reaction upon receiving news he is now the starter, he said, “yeah, I expected it”, well yeah mv7 once you face real defenses that game plan against your limited ability to recognize blitzes, slow release, holding on to the ball to long, unable to slide, you will finally be a memory to the real Philadelphia eagles fans

I have to agree. Looking at what Vick has done this preseason by itself, you would have to give him the job. However, in the long run this is slowing the development of the two young QB’s behind him. If you are to make a 33yr old your starter with two young talented QB behind him, you must be thinking of winning in the next few years. With the defense I have seen under Chip Kelly so far, I don’t see this happening. I think, as in years past, the real Vick will be exposed and there will by a change in the middle to the end of the year.

Most likely Vick is going to have a great year,,, But will the defense be able to stop anybody.. I think they will the defense was the most one dimensional team i the league.. and the offense live was obliterated.
I think Andy is no quarterback Guru.. It will be intersting to see how Vick does compared to alex smith .. If Reid is so great he will make alex smith better, I believe chip kelly is better with quarterbacks and vick will play better than smith

Congrats to M Vick who has earned thecStsrting QB Position
In an open and fair QB Competition as Coach Kelly said he would have..
He’s the Best QB on the Eagles Roster and is a Batural for the System that Kelly is implementing for the Offense.
Vick has worked hard and played well and gives the Eagles in 2013 the best chance to win and be successful so my hat’s off to him and to Nick Foles who has played well (Minus the Turnovers) but has help Vick keep focused
Coach Kelly’s #1 Job is to out and Coach the Best Players on the field to give them their Best Chance to Win and Vick is that guy

the Eagles are not playing for what might happen 2-3 years from now.

There’s no proof that the team will be better down the line if Foles is the quarterback and one can not use Vick’s past history as a reason to go with a player of lesser talent and have injury and turnover issues himself.

I would like to go back to when Elway was called a good QB that will never win a SB and no one was calling for him to be replaced with a lesser talent, but on the contrary a new coach came through and put the team on the legs of Terrell Davis and a good defense under Ray Rhodes and won 2 in a row with an aged, over the hill Elway.

A perfect send off for a player that at one point early in his career electrified the league.

Chip Kelly don’t have time to lose with a lesser talent in hopes things pan out in the future because there’s no guarantee free agents or future draft picks will pan out.

This offense can be prolific with extraordinary talent on the offensive side of the ball and Chip Kelly is not going to waste it with the NFC EAST wide open.

This same Eagles team won 4 games with a decimated offensive line and pathetic secondary, along with the cancerous wide 9 coach in Washburn.

Reid is now outta here for single-handedly dismantling a once proud organization.

Chip Kelly have now set the team in the right direction and we don’t have to worry about time outs being wasted with the offense not getting the play in on time.

No more pass,pass,pass.

Chip Kelly seen the tape and realized Vick was the least of issues with this team and further proof was the 1-5 record under Foles when given a shot.

This team believes in Chip Kelly and Chip Kelly believes in Michael Vick, and he have made it clear that Vick don’t have to look over his shoulder.

Let’s take the NFC East and hopefully it will eventually lead to a Vick ending similar to Elway’s last few years.

Chip can depend on the run game with Shady and keep the chains moving on 3rd down with Vick.

I’m still worried about the safety and corner play but the offense is good to go.

Go Eagles!!!!!!!!!

Well I think it really speaks volumes about the talent a the qb position. Not only was it quite apparent Vick was the better qb, but Foles failed to take the position by the throat and keep it. What more can a true competitor ask for? At least the kid passes the eye test; I’ll give him that (unlike the bum Kolb). For the mentally challenged; we are not rebuilding. The Eagles did not bring in one of the biggest and most innovative minds in organized football to take a 2-3 year look and see. this market is too big; fanbase too rabid and organization too elite and wealthy for that pedestrian approach.
The moment Kelly assessed the oline make up and moronic offensive philosophy of the previous clown and said he liked what he saw in Vick, I knew he had a clue. Finally a coach who understands you either adjust to the strengths of your players or get the right players for your system.

coldbrewski
coldbrewski
August 21, 2013 8:31 am

I say he wins more games. The bigger question is what will some of you do when it starts becoming clear that Kelly was right. Vick has a unique skill set that not only compliments his offense but allows him to set the bar even higher for how it should be played?
The guy who has been a consistent turnover machine and avg during the regular season and most recently went and won a sb with a 9-7 record proves that timing and being placed in the best position to succeed are just as important. Thanks Eli.

It’s not a waste actually…Barkley is the future of the Eagles down the line while the team implements Chip’s program with it’s current stars and the caveat here is that Foles showing may get us a good draft pick that can help us down the line….

So, Chip is dealing with the “here and now” while planning for the future.

Wasted season? that is a dumb comment! So are you saying that the Eagles should start Foles because they will win more games with him than Vick? Or are you saying that because “Foles is the future QB of the Eagles” (in your mind) so you feel he is being held back? Could only be one of the two…

So if you believe the Eagles will win more games with Foles than Vick, then you need to lay off the very strong rum and put the blunt wraps down.
Maybe you believe Foles is the QB of the future for the Eagles? What has Foles done to warrant being giving the keys to this franchise, where everyone gives him a 2-3 year grace period….I don’t think so…you know how many other players on this team want to win games! Its not like Foles was a Luck, RGIII out of college…He doesn’t deserve half the respect some of you clowns give him! That son, is real talk!

regular sized QB’s don’t have to run because their passed don’t get swatted at the line of scrimmage exposing their rib cage and head to vicious hits. Teams can have the slowest MLB in the game and Vick still won’t throw in the middle of the field. He is only a flat passer it is the only passing lane he sees.

I don’t think you watch the games, son…If anyone is only a “flat” passer that would have to be Foles….you must of missed the 40+ pass to DJAX, you must of missed the over the middle pass to the Igwenagu, pass to Cooper, numerous passes to Avant….yeah they were all to the flat….haha, gotta be kidding!

You have to wonder if Kelly and the Eagles view Foles as a potential starter down the road. I think Foles is better that Barkley, so if they don’t see Foles as a future starter they sure don’t see Barkley that way either.

There is a good chance the Eagles will be drafting a QB next year if Kelly stays.

Some of us do not forget how Fraudsongs denounced his fanship and pledged to be a fan of RGIII and the Redskins.

I could truthfully care less who the actual players are, as long as my Eagles play good exciting football and win. The name on the back of the shirt doesn’t matter to me. It is the Eagles I root for, and I want to see each and everyone of them do their be for the EAGLES.

I spent the last four years watching a team that was coached by someone that I no longer had faith in, who had had past successes, but who’s time here in Philly needed to end (for the best of both parties). That coach is finally gone, and we have a new HC who has a new group of coaches, a few new players and a dynamic new scheme. I want to see what he can do with these players, and believe that if he evaluates a situation that isn’t working, he will be smart enough to make a change.

I am a fan of the EAGLES. I support all of the players on the EAGLES, and want to see them ALL successful.
