Remembering Your First Eagles Game

RandallCunningham1How old were you when you recall your very first Eagles game?  Where you actually at the game or somewhere watching it on television from the couch with a family member?  Who did the Eagles play, did they win and what is the one image that stands out more than others?

With the season almost here, with the “new era” of Eagles football about to begin, it truly feels like a brand new start, and for some it will be their very first Eagles game ever.

December 04, 1989, this is the first Eagles game I can truly recall with things like player names, the score and of course Cunningham booting the football 91 yards.  I was six years old, and 24 years later my daughter is about to experience her very first Eagles game.  Still a newborn, so expecting her to remember anything at all is a bit of a reach.  She will be in full Eagles attire and extending the normal bedtime hours may occur if it’ a good game.

I love what it means to be an Eagles fan, and I appreciate how the game was taught to me.  It’s now my turn, and as parents we need to educate our children about more than players past and seasons that ended in failure.  As Eagles fans it’s our due diligence to teach the next generation the pride, passion and knowledge that separates us from the other 31 teams in the NFL.

Unless you have lived in or around Philadelphia, experienced a game live or ventured to a tailgate party in the parking lots, you can’t truly connect with how special the bond is amongst fans.  You will never go hungry, thirsty or feel segregated when attending an Eagles game.  The feeling of togetherness is over-powering, that is if you are wearing our team colors.

I’ve been to close to 100 games, experiencing the high and lows with millions of die-hard fans just like myself.   For those dates in my Eagles past, I met new people; who for that day; became family.
