Chip Kelly Will Adjust Passing Game To Free Up DeSean Jackson

DeSeanJackson7The Eagles have been exposed to a degree offensively in their passing game because of the injury to Jeremy Maclin, they don’t have a dominant number two wide receiver, who can consistently beat man-to-man coverage and make teams pay for giving so much attention to stopping DeSean Jackson.  The Kansas City Chiefs limited Jackson to three catches for 62 yards and no touchdowns.

They weren’t able to handle LeSean McCoy and the Eagles running game, he ran for a 158 yards and the Birds totaled 260 yards on the ground, but their pass rush and coverage, forced turnovers and kept Michael Vick and the Birds offense off balance.

Last Thursday night the Chiefs covered Riley Cooper like a blanket with their second and third cornerbacks. Jason Avant got open a number of times, caught touchdown, while totaling five catches for 87 yards.  Cooper came up with two catches for 29 yards.

They didn’t give the corners much help over the top with Cooper and Avant because they had the safety always focused on Jackson’s side.  Both Cooper and Avant are outstanding blockers in the running game, but neither has the game breaking speed which secondaries fear.

That one of the reasons the Chiefs were able to give plenty of attention to Jackson and they kept him under control.  The Chiefs were simple, they played man-to-man with cornerback Brandon Flowers shadowing Jackson all over the field.  The deep safety in the coverage would focus on wherever Jackson lined up and ventured to once the ball was snapped.

The Birds were lining up in 11 personnel with one running back and one tight end along with the three wide receivers, Jackson, Cooper and Avant.  Cooper and Avant weren’t able to make them pay with big plays.  I expect Chip Kelly to use Damaris Johnson more often because his speed will allow them to make defenses pay with big plays for focusing on Jackson so much.  I expect him to utilize rookie Zach Ertz more often because of ability to beat man-to-man coverage.

That was the key factor in the game along with the offensive line’s inability to block the Chiefs pass rush.  Kansas City was sending only four pass rushers most of the time and the Birds offensive line couldn’t handle them.  Inside with the center and two guards, they were double-teaming nose guard Dontari Poe.

That double-team meant that both offensive tackles Jason Peters and Lane Johnson were going to be left one on one with the Chiefs outside linebackers.  Both of the Eagles tackles came up short in the matchup.  Peters was beaten for a sack by Tamba Hali early in the game and let him pressure Vick all night long.

Johnson was worse.  Kansas City outside linebacker Justin Houston beat the rookie for 3.5 sacks on the night.  It wasn’t even fair.  Houston treated the youngster like he owned him and had him playing scared for the rest of the night.  Every snap was an adventure for the youngster and Vick.  The final drive for the Birds was ended when Houston beat Johnson and forced Vick to fumble the football.

Despite the difficulty with blocking the outside linebackers in the passing game, Kelly’s offense was still able to put up over 400 yards of offense, but the four turnovers the offense made proved to be its downfall.  Vick threw two costly interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.  Center Jason Kelce had two bad snaps, one which was recovered by the Chiefs.

Kelly has shown us in the three games the team has played that he knows how to make adjustments.  The former Oregon head coach has seen his offense run for over two hundred yards in two of the games and over 400 yards passing in the other.  He calls the offensive plays based on what the opposing defense does.  I’m confident he will make the necessary adjustments to make teams pay for focusing on Jackson.

Despite all the good things the Chiefs did, this was a winnable game destroyed by turnovers and inept play. The turnovers devastated offensive rhythm. Mike Vick still can’t plat under pressure. He missed several open receivers trying to force the ball down field. Watch Andrew Luck under pressure to see a really good NFL QB handle things.

Kelly did not adapt well but credit Andy Reid for bonce again mangling an offense. His putrid offense did nada, zilch and left the Eagle in a game they should have won. Only in te 4th quarter did they put together one decent drive.

One of the ugliest performances by the home team I have ever seen. Reid should have been penalized 10 points for facing the decrepit talent he left the Eagles with. Its an outrage.

Vick is the starting QB and was at the top of the QB rating before last game. Just give him a break.

Kap even had a very rough game, so it happens.

Get behind your starting QB.

No his height doesn’t matter because Drew Brees s good and he’s short too….so because Brees is good (and short) Vick’s height doesn’t matter. How can you not understand the correlation?

Or at least that’s the ‘logic’ I’ve read from other vickpologists on here. Must be true.

you’re a dumb ass…….I watched Big Bens game last night, saw him get a few balls batted down…is he too short? saw Brady get some balls tipped this season too? Foles got balls tipped too? Thats goes for most NFL QB’s…When you have a D Line the Chiefs, they try to make an impact anyway they can….not just with sacks and tackles, they try to be a disturbance to the QB bottom line….

Vickpologists (knowledgeable football fans) would know that…

G, turnovers were he main culprit in that game! The field position they put them in is what lost that game, yes, the O line got dominated n Cooper can’t catch a cold but you can’t have 5 turnovers and expect to win, I don’t care who you are. I saw a lot of bright spots though, the Chiefs were 1-6 in the red zone after being perect the weeks before, our D played good for 3 quarters which to me is progress. the good thing about all this is the NFC! We have the same record as the Packers, Falcons, San Fran, the Giants n Redskins are done! We just have to get by the Cowboys who we all know will implode soon, I believe with this rest we will pick it up and get better n better as the weeks go, if the NFC keeps showing parity don’t be surprised if were still in the playoff hunt.

If I’m an offensive coordinator going against the Eagles, I run the play clock all the way down and take a knee on every first and second down. This allows me to bleed the clock tremendously and avoid injuries and turnovers. On third down, I’m virtually guaranteed to get a first down anyway; especially if it’s 3rd and long. The Eagles defense apparently despises 3rd downs and it’s disgusting how terrible a team can be on third and long. I don’t even need a very good player to do this; a washed up Antonio Gates or pedestrian WR like Donnie Avery will get the job done.

the worst part about all those third and long was knowing how Andy Reid is I knew when they lined up the same exact play was coming with Avery dragging behind the other receivers so how come the defensive players and d coordinator couldn’t see it coming. All they did was switch the same play to the other side of the field.

Fact is this defense was bad to start the season and will be bad all season.

They may play a good game here and there and could come around, but first 8 games they are going to drive us crazy with lack of talent and lack of any clutch plays.

That was simply amazing they could not stop one of those third and longs.

This defense will rarely make any clutch stops that’s for sure.

The offense is fine. Any team in any offense that turns it over 5 times will struggle. If they cut that to 3 turnovers they probably win the game.

I am going to give these guys a pass for playing three games in 11 days plus Kelce’s hand injury for the poor O line play. They are better than that. However, I commented in preseason that Herremans is done. Chip needs to seriously start thinmking about Barbre at RG. Herremans has graded out like shit in every game per PFF. Also, the best way to beat a 3-4 is throwing to backs and TEs. They should have been running Ace formation a lot more in this game. It gives you more blockers against the blitz and forces the OLBs to cover. Anyone old enough to remember why the Giants stopped beating us in the late ’80s. Two reasons. Keith Jackson and Keith Byars absolutley killed Banks and Taylor for coming after Randall. 11 personnel is being used too much by Chip.
On defense they need to just let Wolff take his lumps. It is impossible to be worse than Nate Allen. And about time Curry played. There is nothing special about Geathers and Square. At least Curry has a useful skill even if run D is uneven. The secondary is pretty terrible. And let me be the first to say Brandon Boykin has clearly shown why teams passed on him until the 4th round. There is nothing special about him. He is clearly totally mediocre and has failed to live up to the expectations I had for him when I thought he was a draft day steal. He can’t even return kicks. All his athleticism does not show up on the field. Nice kid, but he can’t play much. The front seven will get better.
And by the way, even though they should just count the Eagles record at 1-3 right now, if the season ended today we would be the six seed in the playoffs. So keep your chin up and let’s root for those Ginas so we don’t have to face them at 0-4.

I no longer have any desire to see Nick Foles play in this offense – he is not a good fit for the system Kelly employs. Also, (and most importantly) the idea that Kelly is willing to adapt his system to the strengths of his personnel is a load of crap.

So, what I have to say has nothing to do with me wanting Foles to start – because I don’t think Foles will be nearly as good as Vick in this system.

Both of Vick’s interceptions came when he was NOT under pressure. His first interception came on the 3rd play of the game after a first down completion. He simply threw into press coverage and looked like a rookie. His second interception was a poorly thrown ball, at a covered receiver as well.

This is the same course Vick took last year…. He played well for the first couple games then his game fell apart. He started throwing into coverage and driving Marty crazy. Then he started fumbling twice a game.

We better hope that it doesn’t go downhill this year for Vick because, regardless what we have been lead to believe, Chip Kelly is not out-smarting NFL defensive coordinators. And, in my opinion, Kelly can’t adapt his game to a QB like Foles or Barkley.

You guys are looking for perfection…Then close your eyes go to sleep and dream a little dream, where the world is rainbows, money trees and pu##y buffets….

Kelly offense has not been the problem…The first 2 games there was nothing seen in the offense that would make one suggest that Kelly can’t adapt or fit the system to his teams strengths…From what I saw that’s what he was doing…Against KC, he came against a coach that knew a little more about his players strengths than he did. The offense still put up over 400 yards of offense by the way…

“The same course Vick took last year”
It’s not the same course at all…Vick did not play well the first few games last season…if not for the game winning drives…..Against Cleveland and Baltimore…You don’t know what you’re talking about. Vick will be fine in this offense…this offense will be fine. So far we’ve seen more good than bad from this offense, bottom line!

RealTalk,

Vick might have thrown a few picks in the first two games last year, but he also threw the ball 90 times for nearly 700 yards. About the same as he has in the first three games this year. And he played great vs the Ravens last year.

I have no problem with Kelly’s offense – my comment was that Kelly is NOT willing to adapt his offense to the strengths of his personnel… meaning Nick Foles.

My point is this – We all better hope Michael Vick plays well, because Kelly won’t change his system to fit Foles…. Despite what he says.

I think everyone is starting to see that running the ball alone won’t win football games in the NFL. Our league leading 627 yards rushing, and 6.6 yards/att is good for a 1-2 record, so far.

How about a little 2 Back Offensive Set and lean on the Running Game more
I would like to see Foubke TE and 2 Vacks in the Backfield
It’s not something you see often anymore
And allow McCoy a lead Blocker

He can adjust all he wants, but when you don’t have any other weapons, & he’s constantly double teamed, & spied with a safety, their ain’t much he can do! Their is only so much, in motion, bubble screens, & quick reads, you can do, before he is either ineffective, or injured. Maclins injury, & not upgrading the WR corps, & bringing back both Avant, & Cooper in the off-season, has killed this team. Did they honestly think, injury plagued Benn, Momah the giant stiff, Sampson, Ertz the idiotic reach, & Casey the super hybrid, invisible man, was an upgrade? The talent evaluation is a cruel joke. It might be worse than Ruin 2morrows incredible eye for talent!

People keep mentioning Vick’s height as an issue, but Drew Brees and Russell Wilson are the same height as Vick or shorter.

Both Brees, Russell Wilson throw with their arms moving up and besides their ear of their Helmets which gives them an arc on their passes…
Vick throws from a lower position and almost line-drive typw and some times even drops to almost 3/4 arm position when he delivers the ball.. So bottom line is that Vick is throwing many of his passes from a lower plane to begin with… Just my observation..
