Eagles-Buccaneers Pregame Thoughts

Philadelphia Eagles v Jacksonville JaguarsHow The Buccaneers Can Beat The Eagles

Mike Glennon is the key to this game for Tampa Bay. The rookie quarterback has all of the offensive tools he needs to succeed at the skill positions. Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams are a pair physical, explosive receivers that could potentially do a lot of damage against this Eagles’ secondary. The Bucs also have talented second-year running back Doug Martin. Martin has yet to have a big game this year, but he’s going to touch the ball 25-30 times.

The problem is that Glennon doesn’t have the necessary experience to pick this terrible defense apart. The rookie will be making just his second career start. Its going to be important that the Tampa coaching staff to take advantage of their bye-week, and have Glennon ready to go.

Tampa Bay’s defense is going to have to serve as their anchor.

Its imperative that Darrelle Revis shutdown DeSean Jackson and force Nick Foles to look to his other wide receivers to make plays. The last time Revis faced Jackson, he held him to just two catches for 28 yards. If the top corner is able hold Jackson down, it’ll force the Eagles to lean more on the likes of Riley Cooper, Jason Avant, and Brent Celek to make plays.

Why The Eagles Will Win

Of the two franchises, the Eagles are the much more stable situation while Tampa Bay has been one the league’s most dysfunctional teams for about five years now.

You look at Tampa Bay, and you see a team that is going through absolute turmoil.

Greg Schiano has developed into one of the least popular head coaches in the league. He was unable to develop former top draft pick Josh Freeman, and allowed his relationship with the young quarterback to become so sour that the team was forced to release him. The way things are going right now, he seems destined to be fired at the end of the year.

I can’t see Mike Glennon putting up more than 20 points, even against this defense. I think that this is a week where the defense can enjoy success similar to that of which they had against the Redskins and Giants. There will be opportunities for this unit to make plays against a subpar offense, and a turnover or two to give the Eagles extra possessions could be the difference in the game.

Quick Thoughts

  • Is this a week that we could see James Casey (or even Emil Igwenagu in the event that Casey, who is listed as questionable, can’t play) used as more of an h-back? The Eagles have been struggling to block well for LeSean McCoy over the last few weeks, and with Nick Foles at quarterback the Eagles don’t have the same mobile threat that they’ve had with Michael Vick. It might be time for Chip Kelly to consider using some formations with a lead-blocking fullback.
  • Tampa Bay is a team that takes a lot of foolish penalties, such as the infamous LaVonte David hit on Geno Smith that cost them the game in Week 1. The Eagles need to find ways to take advantage of this.
  • Former Eagles’ third-round bust Daniel Teo-Neshiem will be on the field as one of Tampa’s starting defensive ends.
  • It will be interesting to see the different types of plays the Eagles run with Nick Foles as opposed to what they did with Michael Vick. The two quarterbacks have different skillsets with different strengths and weaknesses. I think we could see more screens and tight end involvement (finally) this week.
  • One of the knocks on Foles has been his lack of arm strength. How much more difficult will that make it for the Eagles to get DeSean Jackson involved? Does it make things easier on Darrelle Revis if he doesn’t need to worry as much about Jackson getting open deep?

Final Thoughts

A lot of Eagles fans have this game signed, sealed, and delivered as a win.

While I do agree that I the Eagles should win this game, I don’t think its going to be nearly as easy as people think.

Here’s a couple of factors to consider.

First of all, never take an opponent lightly. The Eagles have already learned that lesson this year when everyone expected them to blowout the San Diego Chargers in Week 2. Anything can happen on any given Sunday.

Remember the last time the Eagles were heavily favored on the road in Tampa Bay? Think back to 2006, when Tampa Bay was quarterbacked by the likes of a no-name quarterback Bruce Gradkowski. The Eagles were expected to go down to Florida and roll over the Bucs, but a number of Eagles mistakes kept Tampa in the game, and Matt Bryant capped the day off by ripping the team’s heart out with a game-winning 62-yard field goal.

Do the Eagles get caught looking ahead to their looming match with the Dallas Cowboys a week from now? This is also the third straight game that the team has played on the road.

How much will Tampa Bay benefit from the extra week of preparation? NFL teams are typically much better when coming off of their bye-weeks, and at 0-4, this is a team with nothing to lose.

All that being said, I do think the Eagles will do enough to get by and win this game. I’m not in love with Nick Foles. I think he can be a serviceable quarterback that you can get you by for short stretches in this league, but not much more. As long as Foles plays a sound game with limited mistakes, and as long as the defense is able to stay opportunistic and create a couple of turnovers, the Eagles should get to 3-3.

Pick: Philadelphia 24, Tampa Bay 17.

I too don’t think this is an easy game, Tampa’s D is ranked in the top ten, I’m worried about our running game, without the threat of our QB running its going to be easy for them to contain Shady, I’m looking for a lot of quick screens and hopefully two TE sets to offset that.

“A lot of Eagles fans have this game signed, sealed, and delivered as a win.”

I don’t know why. No top 5 defense is an “easy” win. We win this it’s b/c we win the turnover differential and make Glennon our personal Bitch.

Any knowledgeable Football Fan should know that no game for the Eagłes are ever easy (as for most Teams, outside of a very few Elite Teams)
This will be a knock down, drag down ugly Game that usually occurs when the 2 Teams play each other.. A 1 score Difference which Special Teams will be huge. I expect a lot of Punts from both Teams and I would have D-Jax returning in hopes he can make a big play or 2, we may see 15 Punts combined in this game and a big return or fumble could very well be the Difference so Chip Kelly needs to have his best Returner (D-Jax) out there returning them in my opinion.

Just like Lil Wayne said on his way out of jail eazy peezy !
Tampa has imploded — fans don’t show up to watch, games blacked out, MRSA, coach is a jerk.

Eagles 23-Bucs 16 in a game that’s close until
The 4th Quarter as Eagles wear them down and turn a 13-19 3rd Quarter lead to 23-10 lead as Tampa gets a late Score in garbage time to make final closer
McCoy with 84 Yards, Polk with 37 and Brown 14
And Foles with 1 big Scramble for 20 yards
Foles puts up pedestrian #’s. 19 for 32 for
215 Yards Passing with 1 TD and 1 Int but leads the Team to their 3rd Win of the Season as they move to 3-3 and in first place in the NFC East
(Redskins beat Cowboys Sun night to make Cowboys 2-4 & Redskins improve to 2-3 .. the big thing is Eagles would move to 3-0 in NFC Conference Games

Jake dog tell us how you really feel lol. But your right. Objectivity is best. If you gonna criticize don’t make it personal. Say you don’t like arm strength lack of mobility accuracy etc. But people like Vinnie make it personal and don’t make a whole lot of damn sense. I would rather somebody say I hate Vick guts because he is a dog killer. Or just don’t like him vs saying stupid crap like he can’t throw or his arm strength is not good. Or after a 24/25 game 4 touchdowns. Cry about the 1 incomplete. This fan base has to reunite.

Foles/Vick doesn’t mean a damn. Neithier will be here next year. Oregon will win the National Championship this year(Without Chip). Marcus Mariota will win the Heisman (He is the best player in college football). The Eagles will move up if need be to get him next year. He will be the Eagles starting QB next year. So what Foles does today or Vick does tomorrow it really means nothing.

If fans don’t think Chip is talking to Howie of the scenarios to move up and get Marcus Mariota (his guy) already you are crazy. I would think the Eagles would somehow have to stay in the top 10 of next years draft to get him. Bridgewater also has to continue to play well so Jacksonville takes him at #1.

any fan who thinks this is a cake walk is retarded…

The Bucs are going to run the ball 40 times and try to control the clock…run, run, short passes….run, run…..

Their defense has elite players across the board, especially my fav player, Lavonte David….. this is the kid the Eagles passed on for Mychal Kendricks…. another Roseman blunder…. he is a 3 down LB who does it all…. they have a strong front 4 and a terrific secondary…. I truly believe special teams will play a big role in this game…. look for the Eagles to return a kick back to win this one.

Eagles 17 Bucs 16

Looking at the draft, Missouri’s QB James Franklin is a perfect fit for Chip’s offense…. he was a 4 star recruit out of HS in TX and has been a 3 year starter at Missouri… .he was having a career year as a senior, but recently got his shoulder separated in yesterday’s upset over Georgia and will miss 6 weeks, but he has franchise QB written on him… he is ranked as a late 1st, 2nd rounder in this draft. He has size 6-2 225, can run and has an arm.

An interesting player/prospect is Missouri’s
Is Janes Franklin who definitely has the Atleticism,
Size and Arm to play in the NFL.. The big negative is that that the recent QB’s from Missouri who have olayed in that Spread Offense have had trouble playing QB under Center in the NFL
( Gabbert & Daniels)
This Franklin could end up as a WR/Wildcat QB in the NFL like former Missouri QB Brad Smith did a few years back with the Jets & Bills
It’s a shame he’ll miss the rest of the Season for Missouri has Floria, South Carolina and Texas a & M on their Schedule and would have been a good Test to gauge him against some better Defenses..

A other QB who I really think can be a good Pro prospect is UCLA’s Hundley who threw his first 400 yard game versus Cal last evening
The thing I like about him, besides his size, arm and poised demeanor is that he plays under former NFL Coach Jim Mora Jr and runs a Pro-Style Offense with Pro Formations, Terminology and Schemes and should have an easier adjustment to the NFL by whomever Drafts him
Next week, UCLA goes to Stanford who lost at airship yesterday and will be a huge game for both Teams as they try to keep pace with Oregon
And a real good Test for Hundley to see how he performs versus a good Defense.. Keep this fame on your Calender next Sat evening

I wasn’t to high on Hundley in the beginning of the season, however he is proving to be a good passer. I still like mariota more for the Eagles. I also am fascinated with Jameis Winston. As a true freshman Winston must play another year for the Noles, however, if the Eagles do not get their QB this year, Winston will probably come out next year if he continues to play as well as he is this year. I agree with daagolden.I think the Eagles will target mariota though, if he comes out and trade up for him if need be!!!

I really do not understand this idea that Foles can not be the future. If he plays well he is a young 6’5 245lb pocket passer. He is like a tough Phillip Rivers and I think he can be better than him. Get a few big targets and run this offense like Denver’s.

after today’s game you will see why Foles is not a franchise QB…

here is today’s prediction for Foles:

13-29 165 yards 0 TD, 2 INT…. Eagles scores will be special teams, defense and Lesean McCoy.

Why doesn’t Genuis Chip Kelly mix it up a little more and run more clock with a traditional style, 2 Back Offense.. The only way the Eagłes blow this game is by having these .45 Second Drives which puts the Eagles Defense right back onto the Field.. There is no controversy.
The only controversy is for those who have the same agenda they’ve always had. Foles proved he’s a competent back up…thank god..against the worst D in the league. The same as he did against the Tampa Bay game last year.
With Foles in the run game is done. Play a better defense and it will be REALLY nasty. I guarantee there will be no fade to the midget receiver with Revis in next week.

Now class…
Without Vick in our pro-bowl running back doesn’t get anywhere. And then u have to rely SOLELY on Foles arm. How well do you think that’s gonna work out? Foles wasn’t looking to hot when he didn’t have a short field to work with.

LOL.
– Maybe he was gifted 16 points.
– Maybe he was gifted 3 interceptions and a short field.
– You think Foles is gonna beat a better defense with his arm? And no running game…cause Shady is sidelined with him in? Really?

“You stay missing the point.

It’s not a Vick/Foles issue – you can change the names of the QB and if we were still running a zone/read scheme a mobile QB will open up lanes for the RB better than a non-mobile QB.

“First half vs Denver he had 11 carries for 36 yrds. Again, one was a 10 yard run. Otherwise he was 10 carries for 26 yards. WOW! Vick was REALLY helping him there.”

Way to cherry pick stats. And miss the point all at the same time. Impressive. You can’t subtract yards a RB had to prove a point. The yards happened and are part of the overall narrative. SMH

Also McCoy went from about 4.0 yards a carry to -4 with Foles in…that wasn’t a coincidence. When you add on Vick’s yards (yes some came on run plays that broke down but not all) then having defenders having to account for you QB makes a difference in this scheme.

With Foles in some things are going to have to change. You saw that in the Giants game when they immediately started calling more pass plays. Kelly’s not stupid, the run game becomes much easier to stop with Foles in not just ’cause of the lack of Vick’s threat to run BUT our overall lack of offensive talent – without the added threat of a QB running, that’s one less man a defense has to worry about and now the numbers are more in their favor.”

No one is putting up 40 on Tampa Bay.

– Brady got 23
– Bress got 16

I beleive we can win this game, but it’s gonna be tough, low scoring, hard fought win.”

I guess you settled that. You know it is beyond amazing that many of the obsessed can’t even enjoy an overall good performance by the qb(Foles), coach, and to lesser extent D without continuing their crusade about Vick. Your analysis was more than reasonable considering how Tampa’s D was playing and what we’ve seen from Foles thus far. But for many of these asshles the obsession continues.

You’re just as bad as Vinnie cherry picking things. Everything you posted was in RESPONSE to something someone else wrote and you posting it is completely out of context.

You see my post I wrote about regarding the run game. I was REAL clear on what I meant. You can also see where I said CLEAR AS DAY I expected to win the game.

But yeah…keep treking.

I swear hac, if it wasn’t for your blindspot concerning Vick, you’d arguably be one of the most informed posters. Your ability to call out the fraudman’s ( I know you coined it) bullshit flip-flopping is a prime example. But somehow you don’t see how this ALL THINGS VICK is no different from certain posters allowing their hatred for a GM to cloud any reasonable discussion per Phillies. People like myself chime end about Vick because far too many will make any and everything ALL ABOUT HIM. And it’s absurd.
But good call ONCE AGAIN exposing fraudman’s ridiculous post.

I like Vick! I like his story he just is not a good qb. When he talks in an interview I listen. I just don’t like his fans making excuses for his poor play

Fair enough. That’s more than what I felt for him until he donned green. I wasn’t a fan of his at Vtech or Atlanta. But I give him credit for working hard to improve his game and his life since his release. Do I believe there are those who were/are defenders of his no matter how bad his play is? Yup. I also believe that there are many who are obsessed with this guy. They make any and all threads a referendum of his worthiness to play qb on this team. These people are the ones who AT EVERY TURN introduce him into threads no matter if the thread starter is discussing the Theory of Relativity. THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF AN OBSESSION.

Of course. I also find it fascinating that your assessment of both qbs depth on the team is in line with the HC’s after having open competition for the starting job. Just amazing.

I ain’t bringing up Vick, nor am I a Vick hater. I just expose frauds for what they are. You are a Vick idol worshiper, nothing less, nothing more. Everything you claimed about Shady not going to be able to run without Vick in there, to all your bogus excuses to why he would fail, to giving him faint praise in todays big win. You were exposed, for the fraud you are. You ain’t a Eagles fan, you are a Vick fan, & go out of your way, to deny it, by calling EAGLES fans, who want change from his failures, haters. Vick is not, nor ever was a good QB. As soon as you realize it, the sooner you can move on. But I have a felling, when he’s gone, you’re gone. Doesn’t matter to me, from Jaworski- Randall- McMahon- McNabb- Garcia- Vick- Foles- Future, I will always root for MY TEAM, not the name on the back, If ANY player stinks, I will criticize them, non-biased. I use my brain, not my heart, when criticizing someone. You & your cohorts, are no better than Vinnie.

Great game by Nick Foles, great passing on the long ball..lots of touch. Great game by DJAX who is a #1 WR in the NFL and Cooper even had a good game! Good job by Shady…I guess theEagles can run the ball without Mike Vick! All this QB crap is for the birds though..GO EAGLES. Oh good coaching by CHIP.

Fokes finished up 22-31 for 296 Yards
3 TD Passes , 1 Rushing TD and no Int’s and only took 1 Aack on a LB Blitz by Lavobte David..
This against the Buc’s Defense that slowed down both the
patriots & Saints Defense at their Ballpark
Pretty impressive is all you can say and more importantly,
The Eagłes are 3-3, in First Place in the NFC East and have a 3-0 Record in the NFC Conference thus far..
To go back to Vick after these last 2 Games with Foles leading them to Victory would be stupid and looking back instead of moving this Franchise Forward
And anyone who doesn’t see or understand this is simply not an Eagle Fan,
You ride with the hot hand and Foles is the Future or perhaps another QB next Draft, but it is clearly not Mike Vick and should have never been Stsrting out with the Chip Kelly Era, time to finally move forward
