Who Will Chip Kelly Name Today As His Starting Quarterback?

NickFoles8Eagles head coach Chip Kelly will be talking to the media in a couple of hours and you know what’s coming.  He’s going to get peppered with questions regarding the Eagles starting quarterback situation.   He’ll be asked if and why he won’t name Nick Foles the starter after he’s played so well.  He’ll be asked about what else Foles needs to do to win the job.

He’ll be asked about the health of Michael Vick.  He’ll be asked about whether Vick can do anything to win the job.

All the while he’s taking the questions, Kelly will be sticking and moving.

Who is he going to name the starter?  Will it be second year quarterback Foles or the veteran Vick?  Everybody in the Delaware Valley is wondering who will be the team’s starting quarterback when the Eagles walk on the Lincoln Financial Field turf next Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Both of the teams are 3-3 and atop the NFC East.  The winner will take over as the sole leader of the division.

You can bet Kelly will not name the starter anytime soon.  He didn’t let the Buccaneers know who was starting until about noon this past Sunday and he’ll likely do the same thing versus the Cowboys.  It’s not in Kelly or the team’s interest to name a starting quarterback right now.  Just like he did this past week, Kelly is going to force the Cowboys to prepare for both Foles and Vick.  They are too completely different quarterbacks, so it’s going to stress the Dallas defense to prepare for both of them.

Monte Kiffin and the Dallas defense must get ready for Foles’ ability to get the ball out of hands and Vick’s ability to pull the ball down and run for big yardage.  The Eagles are a completely different offense depending on who is quarterbacking.  It doesn’t matter if they have the same teammates and are running the same plays, the offense is completely different because these two quarterbacks are so different.

Kelly is going to talk about Vick’s health and how that is going to play a big role in who will start.  He will talk about Vick as if he could have played yesterday.  He wants to put the Cowboys in a position where they’re just about sure that Vick could play.  If they feel Vick can play, then that forces them to prepare for him.

Right now Kelly doesn’t have to make the decision.  He can say they’re monitoring Vick’s hamstring and continue to put off making any kind of decision about the quarterback position.  It’s a great position to be in for a head coach and I know he’s going to take advantage of it.

Word is that Vick’s Hamstring Pull is a little more severe and deeper than originally thought and may still not be 100% ready to go for Sunday’s first place battle with the Cowboys.. He could probably play in a pinch, but will lack the explostion and speed that he normally posseses which would be fine if he were a “Pocket QB’ but he’s not and if he only has 85% mobility to move around and scramble, then how much does he help you to win an important game or have the chance or re-injuring his hamstring which may end up being a season long battle with his leg that just never quite heals or that could “pop” at any time .. Kelly will not announce anything this early in the week and will let the Cowboys have to prepare all week for both as he did versus the Bucs, so there is no reason on Monday to name his Starter at this point and time..
Cowboys DL is hurting with Starters Ratliff & Spencer gone for the Season and now Demarcus Ware with a High Hamstring Pull and could very well be out this Week versus the Eagles.. .

Kelly won’t be naming anyone as the starter…he’ll have Dallas preparing for both…also he doesn’t know because it depends on how Vick feels….

G, how about an article on the defense for once? How do you think Wolff is improving? How was the D Line utilized? and the blitz that were sent……Eagles got another intentional grounding, 4 in two weeks…getting pressure on the QB…if that can remain, that’ll take a lot off the secondary…

Qb is sexy controversy…sells seats …the maturation of the defense ,starts up front..3 pass rushers vs 5 with blitz techniques has been challenging.integrating a new format 3 -4 scheme and utilizing guys skill sets has been slow in formulating.I watch too many snaps where the pocket forms around the opposing qb who seems way too comfortable.Im willing to be patient ,but I don’t see impact players ,which leads me to believe that the draft will be the focus …if nick is the future that ,frees up a defensive bias in the draft …I enjoyed watching us grind out a win with a running game that ,is such a great weapon ..let’s all give a shout out to shady ,leading rusher in the league..kudos to all the guys up front who seemingly have solidified a unit that was left in shambles last year …our linebackers still have difficulty covering tight ends ,and at 3-3 with all our wins coming vs NFC I like what I see…it’s a fun team ,with balance ,and a rested defense …who seemingly are on the rise.

I still think the Eagles are a 6-10 team but Shady McCoy and DJax’s talents are willing this team to victory. I think both are All Pros –
when will the Mike Vick mirage end already. He can’t go the distance, he is at best a 2 and a half quarter a game player. ( a starting pitcher who is good for 5 innings only)

Eerily, predictably quiet out there from all the non-Eagle fans, & the Vick slurpers. Where is godgotvick, skayne, tsfraud, songs, biglion, stevo & the rest of the Vick idol worshipers? We see who the real fans are. I have a feeling, when Vick is gone, we’ll never here from them again.

Dcar read my posts dude I am about team brah, not the ridiculous back and forth and this will be irrelevant when Vick is healthy and starting. I’ll use one of your lines if you can comprehend what I post the offense isn’t the issue it’s the defense. Just so you understand this since the pre season I’ve said this offense will be effective with either Vick or Foles running it.

“this will be irrelevant when Vick is healthy and starting.” Not if he is hurt for an extended time, & Foles keeps playing good. Vick is not a good QB, never was, never will be. Period….

C’mon …many of those you listed only speak up when the crowd is slanted and not evaluating the QB’s play fairly in 2013…I say 2013 because this season is the one that matters, not 2012, 2011 or 2010…its about now…Both QB’s have shown they can produce in this offense…its not how some make it out to be…that 7 just isn’t getting the job done, is bullshit…Eagles were top in the league in offense and rushing before Vick went out…I could understand had he been stinking it up…As, I’ve said all along football is the ultimate team sport, if the defense can hold teams to 20 points or fewer Eagles have chances to win games even with Barkley in the game……

I did comment, a lot. You have a selective memory Big. I don’t like Vick as a QB. My feelings have never been hidden, nor do I have any agenda, like the racists, & obsessive goofballs on here. Vick isn’t, nor ever will be a good QB. Period. As I stated a million times, it what a idiotic decision to bring back an injury prone failure, when you are rebuilding. You see what you have in Foles for a year, & if he tanks, you have a great QB draft this year. That’s been my stance from day one. Nothing less, nothing more. But it is clear on here, that certain so-called fans, are racist, have hidden agendas, & idol worshipers. End of story.

Im right here and have said since day 1 that i dont give a rats can about the qb spot u dope. We have 2 qbs who can play. Weve put up 30+ points up with both. Qb is not the issues this team has and i will let you simpletons root for the team when u have your way.

This team is good enough on O to go deep into the playoffs- and has been for years. We needed a coach… we have that… we needed a D… still waiting.

No. I will not stop defending any member of my birds against dudes who make snip up just to 1. Spew stupidy for funs sake. 2. Cherry pick stats that fit their bias. 3. Blame everything on 1 player.

The eagles put up 30 points against a very good chargers team…. im not gunna blame our QB for the loss.

The eagles (like everyone else) got destroyed by payton… im not going to blame our QB for that.

Why is this hard for you guys to get…

1. We root for the eaglez no matter WHO the qb is.
2. Vick won the camp comp and so we are giving the coach a chance to… you know… coach.

We get it… u guys dont like him… wont root for the eagles if hes playing… wont leave when you lose bets… and make everything about the qb.

I also defended McNabb against idots.

And Garcia too.

But, that doesn’t give the QB a pass, nor does it give his idol worshippers a pass, for their stupid, biased, support. I support the Birds no matter what, but that isn’t going to stop me from being brutally honest, & criticize, when warranted. If you can’t understand that, I don’t know WTF to tell you. Some of you jack@$$e$ think you have to wave pom-poms, & be blindly loyal to be a true real fan, & if some of us aren’t we are haters, non-fans, & not real fans. Very good? No! Tampa Bay defense is mediocre…they give up about 350 yards a game…they have the same amount of sacks and INT’s that the Eagles have on the season…middle of the pack in passing yards per game giving up about 250 yards a game…They allowed Geno Smith and Carson Palmer to throw for over 250 yards…Eagles offense is way more potent than the Cardinals and Jets…
Now this comment was specifically about how I don’t agree Tampa Bay is that great of defense, takes nothing away from Foles performance…I know some of you would think that was a shot at Foles which it wasn’t, just to be clear! Ready to pounce and defend him just as you criticize for the ‘vickpologists” for defending Vick…

I don’t know what Foles will be 5 years from now, but if your an Eagles fan what else did this young QB need to do yesterday? How can you not be happy with what you saw? You have people saying he was solid or if it wasn’t for the defense etc..(btw the defense sucked, they let Mike Glennon throw for almost 300 yards and let TB score the most points I believe all year so give me a fucking break)
I just want to know what else could Foles have done for these ppl to admit he played a exceptional game yesterday. He played better against the same Bucs defensive talent than HOFers Brees,Brady yet he was just solid.
We had 3 passing tds, 1 rushing Td, 300 passing yards, completion percentage which keeps defense off the field, no turnovers, no stupid sacks, running game was still magically there, long ball looked nice, Djax is now a red zone threat, even got a Cooper sighting, and the win. As an Eagles fan, I couldn’t ask for anything more.

pheags88

October 14, 2013 2:42 pm

Btw where is Jott at? Dude I did not expect Foles to play lights out either cause TB defense is the real deal and they were coming off bye at home. They made Brees, Brady look average and Foles isn’t close to them. But Foles took a big shit on your prediction. Maybe you were posting those numbers as a prediction in case Vick played, cause we saw what happens when he plays a defense that is the real deal.

Tampa defense isn’t as good as you guys make them out to be…Really Tampa is a middle of the pack defense. Geno Smith and Carson Palmer led teams both beat Tampa…Tampa defense is mediocre…they give up 350 yards a game…middle of pack in yards given up in the air..They are pretty solid against the run though.

For more information on how defense plays a role in winning games…look at Andy Reids Chiefs…his team is bottom of the league in ‘passing’ offense production, but still yet they are undefeated…

Excellent job by Nick Foles…it is good to know that we have a competent backup! Foles has shown that he can beat despondent, dysfunctional teams that have failed to beat anyone. However, the real stars of this game is the defense! What we have seen this year is when the defense is adequate and functional, we will win! So if the defense keeps improving, when Vick takes over again the Eagles will. Win at least 10 games this year!

The offense with Shady and the run game will be ok the key factor is the defense! When Vick comes back and stars, he needs the o-line and defense to play better and for the receivers to get separation like they did against Tampa

Foles should start vs the cowboys he has earned at least that. Perfect situation bc Vick is hurt. Foles has to take advantage of this opportunity with another good performance and a win. I told everyone Vick’s biggest prob would be injuries. if Foles won the job in the summer and started from day one the season would not play out as it may now. Now the team can rally around him instead of wondering about Vick. If he is good he will play well no matter when he gets hic chance. Even still im not blown away the offense put 30 or more points up week 1 and 2 and nobody was excited, and they Eagles was well on their way to beating the Giants the same way. This defense is still bad and against better teams/qb play its tough to score 28 points. I’m cautiously optimistic.

The stats actually rank the TB team defense number 6 in the league right now (pro-football-reference). Right now they have given up 20.2 pts per game (10th in the league) and 101 points total (6th). And going into the Eagles game, they were likely ranked much higher since they only gave up a 20 spot once (23 to Tom Brady). All in all they are easily a top 10 defense in the league this year so far. Top 10 is not considered mediocre at best. Don’t ignore reality just because you don’t like the young QB for whatever reason

Show me one post where I’ve bashed him… I’m an Eagles fan first, unlike many others, so dont give me that bullshit…”I don’t like the young QB”…I’ve given credit when credit is due, can the same be said for yourself and some of your buddies? you guys are so funny…you see things your way, don’t have the ability of open mindedness, bout as close minded as they come.

Also Brady’s team has been struggling scoring points all season, however they moved the ball…Brady offense is not the measuring stick nor is it as explosive as the Eagles offense this year!

Also I find it amusing that you would accuse me of not liking Foles…
See post, same threat from yesterday…pay close attention to the closing of the comment…

Very good?

You forgot that the Giants defense only played hard when Vick was in there….that was an actual comment by a poster on GCobb. Crazy but true.

Whats more important than points? All that matters is points and thats what the defenses are ranked by. Calling the TB defense “mediocre at best” which basically means bottom 1/3 of the NFL is bullshit, and making a comment like that to discount the great game the young QB played a joke. You also called the the performance “solid”…so having what 7-8 starts under you and playing better and scoring more points than HOFers Brady/Brees against the same talent is just “solid”? lmao. BTW winning on the road where the team is coming off a bye is no easy task for any team in the nfl. In order to be able to say the young QB had a not solid but “great” game, what else did he need to do for you in that win?

So now you have a problem with me saying Foles played solid? You want to hear the words amazing? you have a lot of nerve considering you can’t give credit when credit is due…
By the way, the coaches and other players besides the QB has jobs to do as well…you sound like one of the unintelligent football fans, and I know you have football knowledge…The QB wins games by themselves, huh Pheages….

Other stats like passing yards a game, rushing yards a game, takeaways, are more telling than points, espeically this early on in the season…only a moron, wouldn’t consider all factors when it comes to defense…

Injuries are part of the game…the next guy up is suppossed to play– that is how it works and is not a built in excuse for vickpologists!

Espn now ranking the top five young quarterbacks, cam newton at 5, rg3 at 4, Kaepernick at 3, russel Wilson at 2, luck at 1

Nick foles over time will be better than all of them

Nick Foles is our quarterback

He wasn’t drafted by Atlanta

He wasn’t signed here as a free agent

He s humble, unassuming, a team player

He’s intelligent

He’s big, strong, he has a hose for a right arm

Nick foles was drafted by the eagles

Nick foles is our quarterback

And Paulman had the Eagłes taking a close look and Drafting him
2 Years ago in my 2012 Mock Drafts, in the 3rd/4th Round as an up and coming QB Propect from Class of 2012
when most of you never even heard of him..
But that’s another story for another day..

Which is why I didn’t want the Eagłes to Re-sign Vick to begin with
But that’s the way it goes, if Fokes keeps Playing well, he will find the Field and become the Leader of the Eagłes Offense moving forward

On a side,
Anyone notice how well OT King Dunkap is Playing for the Chargers
He has man-handled Colts DE Robert Mathis they the first half
So far.. Mathis gas 9.5 Sacks this Year so far
King is also road grading in the running game
Just more proof that Howard Mudd’s 2 Years with the Eagłes really screwed some young OL that were with the Eagłes
Mike McGlynn is the Starting RG for the Colts also.

Yes… I noticed. I also noticed rivers is getting the ball out in 2 secs. Also noticed their coAch likes to use the run and swing passes. I also noticed that anytime you use a run…. It makes the ol not look so one dimensional. Dunlap and all those guys would have looked much much better with chip calling the plays and not bomb bomb bomb.

For the simpletons- relax… This is not a comment about your obsession. It’s about big red… So simmer down girls.

I agree with you Stevo. Reid and Marty had gotten away from balance. A strong Running game would have given O line time to get on same track last year.

– Have to point out though that 2 to 2.5 seconds release time for ball out is much better than an average (AVERAGE) of 3.5

Marty & AR are running pretty Balanced Attackes with their New Teams ..
(Jets & Chiefs) .. Maybe Jeff Lurie was calling the Plays down from the Owners Box like Al Davis did with the Raiders…
