Notes From The Sixers’ 109-85 Loss To San Antonio

sixersspursThe Philadelphia 76ers lost their second straight game on Monday night, falling to the San Antonio Spurs 109-85. Their record drops to 4-4.

  • The Sixers were never really in this game. They fell behind early, outscored 31-13 in the first quarter, and never recovered. We’ve seen Brett Brown’s team fight back from deficits all year, but tonight they just didn’t have it.
  • The Sixers briefly led 7-6 in the first, but then watched the Spurs go on a 25-6 run to end the quarter.
  • San Antonio shot over 46% from three point land, burying the Sixers with their outside shooting.
  • The Spurs also managed to dominate the Sixers even without the services of Tim Duncan, who they decided to give the night off.
  • It was a really rough night for Michael Carter-Williams, who shot just 2-11. The rookie finished with eight points, and only contributed two rebounds and four assists. He did however manage three steals.
  • Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes, and Tony Wroten were the bright spots tonight, although each of them also had their downsides as well.
  • Turner scored 20 points, but shot just 9-21. He also had only three rebounds, which is a down night on the boards for him.
  • Hawes had another double-double with 17 points and 13 boards.
  • Wroten had 13 points off of the bench, shooting 5-9 from the floor.

Final Thoughts

For the first time all season, the Sixers looked in over their heads and completely outclassed.

This comes eight games into the season, after they’d already squared off against the likes of LeBron James, Derrick Rose, Chris Bosh, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, and Stephen Curry.

Not bad for a roster that Brett Brown believes only has six NBA-caliber players on it.

These are the type of games that we had expected to see from the Sixers all year. There are probably going to be more of these nights in the future as the season goes on. As good as Michael Carter-Williams has been so far this year, he’s still a very raw talent, and he’s going to have these kinds of games where his youth shows and he gets schooled by some veterans like Tony Parker.

Tony Parker was fearless against the Sixers’ bigs. Someone needed to force Parker to run into a brick wall and commit a blocking foul and no one did.
