Eagles Sign Cooper To Four-Year Extension, Reportedly Making Progress With Maclin

RileyCooper8Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles front office are making it a priority to take care of their own players.

After signing left tackle Jason Peters to an extension, the Eagles announced another significant move on Wednesday night, signing wide receiver Riley Cooper to a four-year extension.

Cooper gave up the chance to test the unrestricted free agent market, and stay with the franchise that gave him a chance to play and helped him breakout in Chip Kelly’s offense. The fact that Cooper decided to extend his deal now before hitting the open market says that he really wanted to be here all along, and stay in the situation that was best for him.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are by no means closing the door on Jeremy Maclin returning to the team. According to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com, the Birds and Maclin are talking and “making progress” towards a new deal.

Nice to hear Cooper will be here for another 4 yrs. He deserves it, and the Eagles realize this deal had to get done before March 11th. Now let’s lock up Maclin to a 4 yr deal, then go after the best safety in free agency…Jairus Bryd

An excellent downfield blocker. Essential in Kelly’s O, especially the set-play quick screen business. WR must be unselfish and willing to block and let others get the ‘glory’

Big bodied wr that can go up and get jump balls. Also faster than given credit for.

Finally, he’s clearly the WR the starting QB is most comfortable with especially when things break down a bit. Foles obviously has a lot of confidence in Cooper.

Gotta keep those starting QBs happy.

STOP WITH THE DJACK IS GONE CRAP!!! Chip is not gonna trade our fastest weapon!! He loves Djack and the growth he has shown in this offense. He has improved his route tree and been nature about being demoted last year at the beginning of camp. For anything Chip gonna draft a bigger faster version probably. So when it comes time for DJack to go the Eagles will have a replacement. Seriously.

How does his attitude effect his production on the filed, and why do you let it bother you? It’s not taking food out of your mouth or money out of your wallet. Most WR’s have diva attitudes, and you never know how other WR’s are going to act either. The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t. DJax is here to stay. Don’t be sad….be glad!

I have no problem with his play on the field except when he quits on plays like interception that foles threw and he doesn’t run great routes. If you can get a bigger wr with good speed why not take him after all chip did say big people beat up little people.

That’s a crazy question cause the bears quarterback isn’t good so how can you compare the two I would take Brandon Marshall right now over mesean better blocker can get off the line of scrimmage with no problem runs better routes only thing desean has over Marshall is speed. I guarantee if we had Marshall in the playoffs he wouldn’t have been shutdown by Lewis.

No, it’s a legitimate question. If the receivers are good, they are good. No, the Eagles D backs shut them down, the Eagles D backs are built to shut down longer receivers, they did it all year. How can you guarantee Marshall being on our team would not have been shut down by Lewis when Carey Williams and Bradley Fletcher shut down both he and Alshon Jeffries. Your guarantee is speculation of what you would want it to be, not what it would be. There’s a difference.
Oh…and speed kills!

Avant may restructure? but you are correct he isn’t getting 4 million. Maclin is not staying — If Cooper is getting 5 and DJax 12 then Maclin isn’t getting starter money here, that type of money has been spent. If Maclin stays for one year than his knee is in non starter condition.

Avant will be the odd-man out with both Cooper/Maclin Resigning as most of us have stated this Off-Season..
Avant is due to make $4.6 MIllion in 2014 and with D-Jax/COoper/Maclin deals.. you just can’t afford to have a 4th WR making that kind of $$$
this is where you Draft at WR in the Mid-Rounds and groom them behind the Top 3 WR and go from there…
Eagles still do have WR A Benn under Contract for $1.2 Million but who knows if he’s even healthy to compete and will probably be released also unless his knee is 100% and ready to play

Here’s the details on the Kelce signing

Kelce, 26, signed a six-year extension worth $37.5 million, with $13 million guaranteed, according to a league source. The $6.25 million per year makes him among the top five highest-paid centers

Eagles re-signed WR Riley Cooper to a five-year, $25 million contract.
The last year of the deal is voidable and we’ll have to wait on the exact contract details to be sure, but it looks like the Eagles have overpaid. Given Cooper’s ugly racial slur from last summer, it’s unlikely he would have been welcomed into any other locker room as a free agent. Furthermore, he lacks an ability to separate consistently despite the eye-opening 47/835/8 contract-year breakout. Still, the 6’3/222 Cooper is a reasonable complement to diminutive DeSean Jackson because he brings red-zone chops and a willingness to go over the middle. If fellow free agent Jeremy Maclin is re-signed by the Eagles as expected, Cooper will enter 2014 as a No. 3 wideout.

Thanks for info mhenski. I disagree with Schefter though, if the guy is a key piece to the offense, it’s not over paying to keep the guy in the fold. Cooper does not always get separation, but what he does is use his body to shield defenders off to get the ball. I detest the racial slur he used, but, if the locker room can move on then so be it, they have to play with him, not me. I admittedly was a fan of Cooper’s while he played for the Gators and was happy when the Eagles drafted him. The Cooper I saw play last year was the Cooper I saw play at Florida. I think he’s coming into his own with Nick Foles at the helm.

Didn’t Cooper lead the Team with a 17.8 Yard Reception Average..
Not bad for a slow, white guy.. 47 Catches for 835 Yards so obviously Cooper produced a lot more than just being a “Red-Zone Target”
In Fact Cooper’s 17.8 Yard Average per catch tied him in 2nd in all the NFL with Calvin Johnson behind WR Josh Gordon of the Browns
for Receivers with more than 40 Receptions…

Eagles signed C Jason Kelce to a six-year, $37.5 million contract extension.
Kelce had one year at $645,000 remaining on his rookie deal, so this is really a seven-year deal that takes the 26-year-old through 2020. The deal includes $13 million guaranteed and puts him among the top-five centers in the league in terms of both guaranteed money and average annual salary. It’s fair compensation. Kelce busted out in a big way in 2013, emerging as PFF’s No. 1 center while helping anchor the league’s most dominant run-blocking line. Additionally, centers tend to age better than just about any position in football. The Eagles now have their entire talented starting offensive line locked up through at least 2016, which is fantastic news for LeSean McCoy and Nick Foles.

Sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Eagles are talking with free agent Jeremy Maclin but are not close to a deal.
The Eagles wanted to lock up Jason Peters, Jason Kelce, Riley Cooper and Maclin before the new league year opened. All the deals are done except for Maclin’s. It’s a tricky situation because he’s coming off a torn ACL and the Eagles just gave Riley Cooper a $25 million deal with $10 million guaranteed. Maclin has conceded he may have to accept a one-year deal, but it now looks like he could find better opportunities elsewhere on a team with fewer mouths to feed (the Jets are reportedly very interested). Eagles beat reporters fully expect a deal to get done in the next 12 days, but it’s far from a sure thing.

All the die hard Eagles fans should be estacic today, think about it
Our O line is intact till 2016
Our QBs favorite WR is signed for five years
The money going to these players will come from cuts like Chung, Avant ect,
We still have major money to sign at least one big name FA,
Our draft can focus solely on D,
We can now say it was Banner with that crazy mentality of not signing players over 30, see ya you bumb
This team has one year of playing in this system under its belt and the’ll all be back
Our future is looking bright, hats off to Howie and the front office, our future is looking bright!

Demeco Ryans is a liability in the passing game and his positive run stuffing ability don’t make up for it. He was every bit as bad as Patrick Chung in the passing game. The center of the Eagles defense was open for business all year long. He was used and abused in the passing game.

Eagles RCB Cary Williams’ $4.75 million salary for 2014 becomes fully guaranteed on March 16.
By the fifth day of the new league year, the Eagles will have to decide whether or not to cut Williams. All things considered, the 29-year-old didn’t have a horrible year. Williams graded out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 92 corner out of 110 qualifiers in terms of coverage but was targeted the most times. He’s also a willing tackler in the run game. The Eagles need safeties more than corners. Jan 7 – 8:38 AM

The Eagles don’t have a True #1 WR now as it is anyways..
They have 2-3 WR’s who are #2’s/#3’s type of WR’s …
It seemed to work well last Season didn’t it…
Spread the ball to 3-4-5 Receivers & TE’s is how Kelly’s Offense is designed to do… Which was similar to Coach AR’s System as well..

Its a good day for eagles fans… we were able to lock up our starting Oline and what will be 2/3rds of our starting WR’s. Its clear to me that the eagles believe they have the O they want for many many years. Now,,,, they will draft D and work to build the D they want/need.

As has been said…. in this league you need to be able to do something very very well and the eagles will be able to do just that with these signings.

Djax is going NOWHERE… he had a GREAT season last year and I believe will only get better in this system. You trade away your best players when you’ve got talent behind them that can hold the fort. We are not in that position this year.

IF…. IF…… IF…. a talented speedster falls to us in the draft (in any round) and we spend the year working with them and asctually seeing them kill it IN GAMES…. then we pull the trigger… but no reason to do that now.

Either JMAK or another FA signes with the birds and we find a guy in the draft to round out our WR’s.

Now…… what kind of cap do we have left stat girl? And what will be out there for us on D?

I agree with you HAC, at the same time though, that word is spiritual murder when referred to as one by a caucasian. You may not be able to relate, but I’m telling you. I’ve moved on from it, as I will not let anyone define me, but, that word has deeeeep penetrating power and hatred behind it and it may not be that easy for some to move on, especially the elder generations of African Americans. You can’t dictate or decide when someone should move on when not knowing or I understanding a personal history with that word. Ask a jewish person to not be that offended by a swastika symbol, regardless of how young or old they are, and see the response you get.

Yes, that is a better analogy, and no, it wasn’t the crime of the century, however, I maintain my position. Some people, especially older African Americans know what it is like to be a by word, no one has the right, nor should they have the temerity born out of sheer arrogance to tell someone else when they should get over something that effects them personally. My response would be, Who in the hell do you think you are?

Never said “get over it” as said its time to move on from one stupid person using the word. If I didn’t articulate that well blame it on the brevity of typing on an iPad.
Get over it implies a “revisionist” attitude… That is not what I’m about.. Again was referring to moving on in this particular instance

Hey Paulman I just try to come up with trades that fit and make sense djack to the 49ers make sense for both teams
1.he gets to go home and play
2.s.f. Has been trying to get speed on there team for along time now and they are ready to win now team not 4 yrs down the line.
3. The birds love this wr. Class and they can have Maclin as there #1 wr and cooper as #2 and the rookie can be #3 with Maclin going into the slot when they go 3wide.

I believe you have the “Trade D-Jax Disease” that I had for the last 2 Years, but it doesn’t appear it will happen, he did have a great Season last year and i am ok with him playing out his Career here in Philly.. This Offense is a great Fit for him, though I always thought that he would prefer out close to hime nad there is no doubt that the 49ers would love to have him on their Team..

Lol anyprice lol just look at everything they djack comes our and says he wants more money but already has a nice contract now they sign cooper to a long term deal and they want to sign Maclin to a long term deal that’s to much money for one position if you think they are gonna keep then more power to you brother. FYI I actually like some of his rap songs I don’t like seeing him on Instagram smoking weed crying about a contract after a playoff loss things like that.

Most Ridiculous Trade Rumor of the Day ….

Eagles Send QB Nick Foles & TE James Casey and their 2nd Round PIck (#54) to the Houston Texans for the #1 Top Overall Pick straight up ….
With the #1 Pick- The Philadelphia Eagles Select DE Jadeveon Clowney from the University of South Carolina…
At #22 – The Eagles Select Safety Calvin Pryor from the University of Louisville

Texan’s HC Bill O’Brien is estatic to have a Pocket, Tall QB which is what he preferes to run his Offense .. (Like Tom Brady, Ryan Mallet and recent Penn State QB’s)
Texan’s go on to Win 3 of the next 5 Superbowls while eagles DE Clowney gets suspended, arrested, and eventually kicked off the Team and is out of Football entirely by 2016 .. Clowney ends up with 2 Carrier Sacks in 10 Eagles Football Games…
It’s th way te ball bounces sometimes…

One more move to make on offense. Now this is a must. Even if you sign Maclin to a 1 year deal you draft Benjamin or Adams at #22. Now myoffense is set for the next 3-5 years. Foles, Shady, Ertz, DJax, Cooper with Maclin on 1 year deal if he takes it with Benjamin as your 4th this year then he becomes #1 in a year or 2. After round 1 and in FA you do all defense.

Why is it so hard for people to believe that the eagles would throw a TON of money at the WR position this year? lets break it down….

1) The birds do NOT have to spend much on the QB spot this year.. thats a big deal. It is usually the highest paid spot on the field.. so… they have money to use therefore….

2) Spend LOTS of money on it this year by giving big signing bonuses so that you DONT have to do it next year,

3) The D is a mess and they will need draft as many people for the D as they can in hopes that they land some starters for the future. IF they landed Jmak back…. thats 1 less “NEED”.

4) The WR spot is a HUGE deal in this O…. all of the O weapons are… everybody knows what Jmak can do when healthy…. why wouldnt they want all 3 here?

You guys… the birds are not trading Djax! The birds would be better off if all 3 stayed.

i want to add 1 thing here… as I read what I’ve been writing these past few months I seem to be in full agreement with what they are doing on O. I want to be clear…. I LOVE what they are doing on O… however….

I have been 1 of the more vocal bashers of the D for the last 100 years or so and that will not stop until they seriously upgrade this D. I was very unimpressed with the pickups last year outside of barwin and i am praying we upgrade.

You hit the nail on the head Stevo. Roseman is doing a very good job of taking advantage of the fact that our starting QB and backup are both still on their rookie contracts. He is making moves this year to sign players against this years cap while having some room in the upcoming years when they need it.

Very good point Stevo. Roseman is doing a good job but they need to make some smart moves to address the holes on this DEFENSE. I think things are lining up for many draft picks to be dedicated to the defense, but we need to be sure that we pick some quality players.

armyprince

Steve O I’m with you buddy. That’s why these signings are brilliant. Because between FA and the Draft this defense is about to get bigger Faster and stronger. We open up for a lot of BPA picks in the draft. And it looks like defense is deep in this draft exactly what we need.

andrew p

February 27, 2014 6:28 pm

For those of you that think we put out a lot of money on O and are overlooking the D, we didn’t put a dent in the cap room we have, the cuts alone that will be coming up will cover what we paid these guys salaries this year, we have plenty of money to spend to upgrade the D plus the draft, below is the breakdown of what they were paid, remember, thats all three combined! you will see how great of a job our front office did, I’m loving it!

The combined cap hits come out to $12,714,358 in 2014, $17.55 million in 2015, $19.8 million in 2016, $22.45 million in 2017, $24 million in 2018, $6.5 million in 2018 and $7 million in 2019.

Of the $42.55 million in guaranteed money the Eagles committed to in these three deals, more than half is this year.

The guaranteed money comes out to $24.148 million this year, $13.8 million in 2015 and $4.602 million in 2016. There are no guaranteed components in any of the deals beyond 2016.

All of which gives the Eagles plenty of flexibility beyond 2015, despite the huge amounts of money in these deals. If they wanted, they could get out from under any of the deals in just two years. There would be cap hits but little guaranteed money to worry about.

When I first heard about the Cooper contract I thought it was too much, especially when the Eagles had the bargaining power. But I feel happy about it now after knowing the majority of the guaranteed money is paid out this year when our QB is only making like 700K. Smart move by Howie. Hopefully they can get Maclin on the cheap now and draft a young promising WR in this draft which is loaded in receiving talent.

I would love Odell Beckham in the 2nd round…but I doubt he last that long.
Would love to see what Foles could do with Djax, Cooper, Maclin, Beckham and Ertz in his second year

Here goes one i called a few replys up, again this will be over three million in savings which is like giving towards the three signings, Chung and a couple others will be next which will leave us plenty of money to shore up the D, looking good Eagle fans.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports that the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to release veteran WR Jason Avant at some point next month.
Caplan adds that the move will likely happen before his $1 million roster bonus is due on March15.
Avant, 30, has one year remaining on his five-year, $14.75 million contract and is set to make $2.25 million for the 2014 season. He carries a cap figure of $3.9 million, however, the Eagles could free up $3.25 million in space by cutting him loose.

On another note is anyone following this Darren Sharper saga. He has now been accused of atleast 7 rapes and counting in 5 different states. At first I was like damn dude you have a sickness. But then I started thinking all these women go to his house at 4 am after the bar expecting to talk? They all said oh no Darren I just want to cuddle?. I mean Im not rich but woen around here that go home with guys from bar at 3am they know what time it is with broke ass brothas all the time. Something just isn’t adding up. In no means am I advocating his actions if the women did say no, but all these women coming out of the woodwork? Then again maybe these are the women that did say no and the other 100 were down with it. Ethier way this guy is done. There is noway he can get out of this.

Having consensual sex with basically any female you want doesn’t do it for you. Thats what i think is wrong with this Sharper dude. He seems to get off by raping women.

Now we see why the Eagles met with Johnny Tackle Football, he’s starting to drop out of the top 10 on various boards after the combine. They must have foreseen him falling..

So like I said before any of this happened, if he drops out of the top 10, I feel the Eagles will target him and draft him..

He has every single intangible that is needed to run this style of offense 100%. Not 80-85% but 100%.. And I like Foles but I can’t ignore what I see. Aside from the stats Foles put up, this offense has a lot more to offer.. Esp when the zone read is implemented effectively..

I still can’t figure out what the rest of the WR roster will look like.
Djax and Cooper and who else?
Is it and an either/ or between Maclin and Avant? Is Avant a dead duck no matter what Maclin does?
Are Johnson, Maehl, and Benn going to be replaced?
If a 2nd or 3rd round draft choice is used on a WR are they scouting for the slot( Avant), size ( Cooper) or speed ( DJax)
