Thoughts On The Malcolm Jenkins Signing

malcolmThe Eagles made a significant move on Tuesday, agreeing to terms with free agent safety Malcolm Jenkins on a three-year deal.

Jenkins, a former first-round pick of the Saints, was valued by the Eagles because of his versatility. He can play either safety position, and can also help out at corner if need be.

“We really liked Malcolm’s versatility,” head coach Chip Kelly said. “He can line up at either safety spot, can come in and make a tackle, and can play man-to-man as well.”

There’s certainly plenty to like about this deal for the Eagles. The team was able to sure up the safety position, and get themselves an upgrade over what they had in Patrick Chung and Nate Allen. Jenkins’ experience as a cornerback could also prove useful should the Eagles find themselves in a situation where they need to get creative to help cover for injuries.

Its worth mentioning that the Eagles are following last year’s free agency formula of attracting players from winning teams. Jenkins brings plenty of playoff experience with him, and has a Super Bowl ring. Last year, the Eagles made it a point to bring in players from the league’s most successful organizations such as the Texans, Ravens, 49ers, and Patriots to help build a winning culture in the locker room, and the Jenkins move stays faithful to that approach.

As talented as Jairus Byrd and T.J. Ward are, they’ve spent their careers in losing environments. That’s not really a knock on either player, but the Eagles learned a valuable lesson from the 2011 spending spree, when they went after the Asomugha’s, Babins, and DRC’s of the world. Those guys might have had the most talent of any player on the market, but they were terrible leaders that had been used to losing throughout their careers. When the going got rough, those guys sulked and collected their paychecks. Howie Roseman and the front office have been committed to bringing in guys who know what it takes to win.

However, Jenkins is not a difference maker that will make the unit substantially better than what it was. The former Saint has never had more than two interceptions in a season.

The Saints were not concerned at all about allowing Jenkins to walk, and have made it a priority to upgrade him by pursuing the top safety on the market, Jairus Byrd. Pro Football Focus also had Jenkins rated 73rd on their list of top 75 available free agents, commenting that while Jenkins’ versatility is a plus, he’s rarely excelled.

The Eagles themselves haven’t had any luck since 2009 when it comes to adding veteran safeties. They’ve struck out on Sean Jones, Jarrad Page, O.J. Atogwe, Kenny Phillips, and Patrick Chung. While I trust Howie Roseman, Tom Gamble, and the front office much more than I did a year ago, they’ve been off for a long time when it comes to evaluating quality safeties. Hopefully this time they’ve got it right.

The Saints sign Byrd with only 2 million in cap space, we had 24 million not included the Chung cut and all you hear is everyone crying about how we have to be smart and not overpay, BS! It said the Saints upgraded their position by letting of Jenkins n signing Byrd, did anyone from the Eagles read that part? Key word, UPGRADE. Howie has to get over his 2011 nightmare already.

28 mill guaranteed for Byrd. Im happy the Eagles didn’t go to that level.. that’s astronomical.. Ridiculous.. The saints front office is retarded.. they cant even afford their star TE Jimmy Graham…

For the guys saying the eagles still should have got him are dumb and brain dead..

If you want a good or great safety you have to draft them and lock them up on the cheap or in FA you will have to overpay for a good player..

J Hart, I agree! No way would I of wanted to see us pay him that kind of money, let them get Clemons or someone that can come right in and start and see what we can do at LB or edge rusher, who knows, maybe they surprise us and take a run at Revis.

Exactly, anyone with a brain sees 28mil guarantee knows that was a foolish deal to even entertain..

Esp for a team like the eagles who are building a very solid team.. I like the idea of allocating the money in various position of need not all on safety per say..

I do see them giving Revis a offer, not sure about the figures.. maybe a 3-4 yr offer..

The broncos may be signing Ware but its still early.. Id be fine with just Revis, clemens and them looking to draft another corner another safety and a pass rusher..

I you have to remember, for as good as he is
And the Bills had sone a talent on their Defense with M Williams,
K Alonso,& even Donte Whitner a couple years back
Did Byrd help lead the Bills to anything?
He’s a good Safety no doubt, but some other Team have their hands tied financially with that Deal he got..Eagles can upgrade 3-4 other Positions for that kind of $$$

Im not paying that for Byrd sorry. he is a playmaker but lets get real where do you rank him vs Troy Polu in his prime Ed Reed in his prime? he is not that type of safety. Like he is Takeo Spikes vs Ray Lewis not quite the real thing. Buffalo’s D has had first rd pick after 1st rd pick FA like Mario Williams, a cast of former pro bowl lb’s what height’s did Byrd take their defense to? Teams win games and we are building a good team. Not to mention you send the message to your team guys are not just gonna walk in the dor making a shit load of money on the team when they haven’t earned their wings. Also players get these big named additions and start taking the egde off thinking this guy is going to make things happen when all else fails. The birds D will come into camp and work harder than they would have they signed Byrd. good pick up!!!

I doubt AJ Martin even makes their final 53 Man Roster
I just don’t think he has that mental make-up to tough out camp..
Martin is from the Bay Area and will get a fresh start which is all he can ask for.. Maybe he’ll surprise and meet the chalkenge and opportunity that’s ahead of him.. Do remember that Guard Mike Iupati suffered a broken fibula in that NFC Cahampionship Fame in January so he and LB Bowman won’t be ready anytime soon..

Great points. Like I said people are acting like we missed on Ed Reed in his prime. Byrd didn’t elevate the Bills D he is no world beater without the right things in place. Jenkins will come in with a lot of growing pain behind him a fresh start on a defense that is getting better. His contract and versatility allows us to go after other players that will make us better than signing Byrd would. Our 1st rd pick now does not have to be a safety, we don’t have to resign Nate Allen out of need

Teams who took it on the Chin Today

Chiefs – Lost 3 OL Today
(Starting LT Albert, Starting RG Asomoah,
6th OL Swingnan G Schwartz)
Lost Starting DE Tyson Jackson
And Scat Back/Returnman McCluster

Panthers have had 3 OL retire in the last
2 Weeks and signed no one
Jordan Gross, Travelke Wgarton and Geoff Hangarter
and have very little depth on their Roster
Lost Safety Mike Mitchell
Have issues and a unhappy situation with WR Steve Smith
There #2 & #3 WR’s (Brandon LaFell & Ted Ginn) are both Free-Agents so QB Cam Newton coming into his Contract could have a rebuilt inexperienced OL & WR Corps to pkay with..
Why they continue to keep 3 RB’s with big contracts is beyond me
(D Williams,J Stewart & M Tolbert)
I expect the Panthers to take a major step back next year..
And probably win 5-6 Games

Why do you guys think the cap is going up to like 150 mill in two years. These huge contracts will be considered normal in a year or two. Wait to you see what Earl Thomas gets as a safety (Eric Berry will get huge money too)…Then think about young great pass rushers like Miller, Houston…Corners like Sherman…DTs like Suh. These contracts will make Byrd look average.

I just want one difference maker in the secondary. The Eagles obviously cant draft one recently. And the cheaper stop gaps that they have been trying year after year blow up in our face. Being the 29th ranked defense is not OK with me.
And the Eagles have a TON of money…next year they will likely be 30plus million under cap.

Super happy we didn’t get Mitchell. Dude is a flat out bum. TJ ward is a Roy Williams clone from Dallas. Box player only. Bethea was the best safety in this free agency regardless of what they say. He does it all. But also benefited against a week division. But proved himself in the playoffs EVERY YEAR. Jenkins played in the playoffs EVERY YEAR(except 2012) and proved himself. Ward, Byrd no playoff expirence at ALL. So I’m good so far. We need to go after ware on a 2 yr deal

When you go from worse to 1st, win the division, & the only gaping holes you have, are at safety, you have over $26M+ in cap space, it is your obligation to get the best safety out there, not sign the 67th rated safety, who was part of the NFL worse secondary in 2012. I don’t give a $#!t how much Byrd got, he should have been here. At the very least, SS TJ Ward should have been signed. He got almost a mirror contract, that we gave to stiff @$$ Jenkins! For all you lemmings, who think this is a good move, are flat out imbeciles! It’s another year of band-aids, & mediocre signings, at blue light special prices! It’s all about the $$$$, & nothing to do, with fielding the best team possible. If you idiots can’t see that, you are hopeless! Same thing last year. List of deep, quality FA players, & a deep draft class at secondary, & we signed, & drafted STUGOTS!!!! Nothing will change this year. Don’t expect anything else of significance in FA, & expect more reaches, head scratchers, & wrong choices in the draft. I don’t want to here how great Weaselman is, EVER again by you idiots! You don’t have a clue! It’s all about the Salary Cap Bowl Championship, not the SB Championship.

OOOOOH, it’s an upgrade. 2 f^#@ING zombies could have been upgrades over the dreck we had last year. 5 years & counting, since we had a legit Safety. Same $#!T every year, with the blind spots, on this team. They never learn. If it isn’t WR’s, it’s LB’s, if it isn’t KR’s, it’s Safeties. It’s quite embarrassing, the arrogance of this team. Banner, & the Hindenburg are gone, but things haven’t changed that drastically. They still haven’t learned from their mistakes. How many years, are they going to use the 2011 season as an excuse, for not signing high quality players, that are difference makers, at high price. It’s their fault, that they signed past their prime players, based on name only. Byrd, & Ward are still in their primes, & are difference makers. Jenkins is NOT!

The diff ward n byrd make are against bums. It’s a fact and I proved it. Well I don’t need to prove shit with ward. And already did with byrd. And can’t anyone say shit about it. There facts. All u have is a deranged opinion that one safety that’s getting 30 million in guarantee money for what???? Fuck that. Saints can have him. He’ll be on the block in 2015 after he’s out half the year with a bum foot.. Ashamed to say some of U are my fellow eagles fans

You didn’t prove $#!T. Dude has 22 int’s, 11 FF in 4 years, on a $#!T team. That ain’t smoke & mirrors bruh! I don’t give a rats @$$ who was QB’ing. You should be ashamed to look in the mirror. You are a clueless clown, if you think Jenkins is a better signing than Byrd! Byrd is a play-making, difference maker, Jenkins ain’t! Period!

OK…

The Broncos goes to the Superbowl and sign Talib, Ward and is now bringing in Demarcus Ware.

Eagles sign who?

The Cap Champions continues to flex their “gold plated” belt.

I hear every talking that dream team garbage as an excuse to why the Eagles won’t pay the top player at a position we suck at without emphasizing, that happened in an uncapped year with every player besides asomghua signing cap friendly deals.

Hats off to the broncos.

This signing sucks ass!

Dcar u just keep sounding stupid. I yea. I know u remember a guy by the name OJ Atogwe right? Most picks in the league the previous 4 years before leaving he rams for the skins then philly.. 25 picks 19 FFs.. Got big money at the time and what happened ?? Stunk it up.. Point is he was just attractive as byrd with better stats. Ur argument is invalid and was just schooled son. Now is a good time to put aside ur shitty opinion and step ur game up. Because u seem to be the guy who sits and waits for shefter to spout stupid shit and call it football knowledge..

Atogwe was hurt for 4 straight years, & the Birds signed him as depth signing. So don’t let the truth get in the way, of a good delusion. Please bruh, give me a break.

He was an insurance signing, signed on a 1 year contract as an insurance policy.

BTW, who’s playing SS. All of the quality safeties are gone. The draft is a crap shoot, & the top safeties aren’t guaranteed to still be there at #22. The move was all about the $$$$$, & if anybody thinks otherwise, you’re clueless. I can’t wait to see what you goofs say next year, when we have the same issues.

Songs, dcar …… The broncos are piece or two away from being SB champs. Philly is not. Why waste all that money for a player who isn’t gonna take us to a bowl. All that byrd deal would do is completely disable our chances of building a better squad.. If we only needed a safety as our final piece than I might agree. But we don’t. Our cbs are avg. our DLine is avg. c’mon y’all. U cannot be this stupid.

How is $9M going to disable us? We were $26M under the cap, before cuts. Next year Cole, DJax, Herremans, Casey, Ryans, all will be on their last years. So their $$$$ will be off the cap. The cap goes up to $155M in 2015. You don’t know WTF you are talking about.

How is signing a pro bowl exceptional talent at safety a waste of money?

Would the defensive secondary be better with Byrd or Jenkins?

Jenkins sucked ass against us in the playoffs….Remember?

How is getting a lesser talent who misses tackles better for the Eagles?

You didn’t say the Skins, you made it sound like when he signed here! YOU don’t get it. You are another clown. He was hurt with the skins. Before that, he was an All-Pro Safety, & one of the best in the league. Byrd is NOT HURT! His heal spurs/ Plantar fasciitis, can be alleviated, & cured with molded insoles, & cortisone. I had the same exact thing. It is now gone.

Dcar- dont bother. They dont get it. They dont seem to see how much yhe S spot has cost the last 5 years. Wasted picks. Wasted attempts to sign blown knee guys.
