Predraft Analysis: Stanley Jean-Baptiste

sjpDraft Analysis: Stanley Jean-Baptiste

Stanley Jean-Baptiste is a tall, former wide receiver still transitioning to the cornerback position.  He does a very nice job jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage and uses his height well to meet the ball at its highest point, breaking up potential receptions.

Although nearly 6’3” and 218 pounds; Jean-Baptiste is not a physical cornerback, and his tackling skills are not a strong point of his game.

Jean-Baptiste used his length and athleticism to make plays while at Nebraska.  When asked to play schemes outside of press coverage, bigger receivers were able to win battles in space.  Jean-Baptiste is still learning the techniques of the position and how to position his body to off-set the skills and route running of opposing wide receivers.  He has shown steady improvement at the cornerback position since making the switch, and there is little doubt he will continue to do so at the NFL level.

Jean-Baptiste is a smart football player, who has the size to match up to the larger wide receivers in the league.  He has received comparisons to Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks, moving his initial draft rank of a late 3rd/early 4th to a possible mid to late 2nd round selection.

Jean-Baptiste could certainly be a target for the Eagles if still available in round 2.  They don’t have a guy like him currently on the roster, and his size is something that Chip likes with his players.

Having the 2014 starters already on the roster at the cornerback position, the coaching staff and Jean-Baptiste would not be rushed into starting from day 1.

My fear with former offensive players playing limited at the defensive position and then drafting them with an early round pick, is former 2011 3rd round pick and current Eagle Curtis Marsh.   The upside to Jean-Baptiste is at a different level then where Marsh was at; but making the jump from the offensive side of the football to defensive is a much easier at the college level.

Roseman has already hinted that he likes the depth at the cornerback position for this draft class.  If Jean-Baptiste is not selected by the Eagles, there are other names that could absolutely contribute to the revamped Eagles secondary from a season ago.

Round 1

Darqueze Dennard (Michigan State)- Physical, in your face, with a nasty chip on his shoulder.  I have him rated above Gilbert as the best cornerback in this draft.

Justin Gilbert (Oklahoma State)– Tremendous talent and work ethic.  Has the ability to take it to the house on both the defensive side of the football and contributing as a return specialist.

Kyle Fuller (Virginia Tech)- Versatile with where he can be used, aggressive with his point of attack and can close the gap quick between playing in space and the receiver.

Jason Verrett (TCU)- Plays big, but a smaller cornerback who will be a heck of a slot guy in the NFL.  Like current Eagle Boykin, his limitations in height may also limit being used to man the outside receiver.  If the Eagles did not already have a stud at the slot, Verrett would certainly be a player I would be targeting in day one of the draft.

Round 2

Bradley Roby (Ohio State)-  He should go in the first round with his college resume, but his recent off the field altercation will most likely cost his a day one selection and a few extra dollars in his paychecks.

Keith McGill (Utah)- When you are 6’3” and 211 pounds, teams are going to want you, even if your skill set is only above average.  His reminds me of former Eagles flop Asomugha, although big, his actual skills and passion for the game gives me no reason to encourage him as a day 2 selection for the Eagles.

Pierre Desir (Lindenwood)- I like players who go about their business the right way and have the physical tools to get it done.  Desir was the best at his position not playing at division one.  He is the kid of kid who will get the most out of his talent because of his work ethic.  He has good speed, tackling and coverage skills.

Round 3

Jaylen Watkins (Florida)- Played cornerback and safety at college.  He has the rare combination of speed and strength, and a terrific motor.  Still coming into his own at the position in terms of coverage skills, best suited for run support at the moment.

Round 4

Rashaad Reynolds (Oregon State)

E.J. Gaines (Missouri)

Round 5

Terrance Mitchell (Oregon)

Antone Exum (Virginia Tech)

Aaron Colvin (Oklahoma)

Round 6

***Shaquille Richardson (Arizona)- The kid is fast, strong and a tremendous athlete.  His draft stock could actually see him fall to round 7, but with the right coaching, I think this kid could be similar to former Eagles Al Harris, minus the pass interference penalties on important third downs.

Round 7

Deion Belue (Alabama) Sr 5-11 182 7

Undrafted

Ciante Evans (Nebraska)

Jeff Kolsky

If he is there at #86, it’s a no brainer. He’s big, quick, high ceiling CB, that has the versatility to play Safety too. He’s my pick.

I am not a fan of Baptiste and am always leary of CB’s from Nebraska where they play a soft-zone cover 2 Scheme which does not fit well with Eagles Schemes.. I am not saying that Baptiste can’t play but I want them to Sekect a CB with experience and success in mam to man, press coverages and who can make plays on the ball as well as being physical in run support
I prefer a Fuller,Desir, Gaines and a sleeper CB named Breeland from Clemson who went up against Sammy Watkins & Martavius Bryant every day for 2 Years in practice while at Clemson, keep your eye on
Bashaud Breeland of Clemson (3rd/4th Rd Prospect)

What about Will Clarke would make you draft him to fit in the Eagles defensive scheme? I know they worked him out, but I think once they found out about his lack of agility and stiff hips, they ruled him out as they wanted to see if he could play olb. Not big enough or strong enough to play 34 end.

This draft isn’t about 2014 it’s more about 2015 only people I can really see playing this year is a wr. Another other position will either just be a special teams guy or just a small role player they could use Clarke like they did this past season with kuger let him bulk up for a year and sit out or have him on the 2nd team.

Then why waste a 3rd rounder on him when you have Kruger to play that role. To much talent to say we are drafting for 2015 defense. I’m not taking a 3rd rounder with the mind set of letting him sit out!

Keep an eye out for UCLA WR Shaquelle Evans in the later rounds. 6’1″ 210 – 4.52 40 time. Reminds me of Anquan Boldin. Very Physical, big, good hands, takes time to accelerate but once he is going he can get good YAC.

I like Evans out of UCLA, he played real well down the stretch
For the Bruins and would be a nice Pick-up in
Later rounds.. Cones from a Pro-Style Offense from Jim Mora so he knows and has experience in pro terminology, formations, responsibilities
Routes, etc.. I always like when a Player cones from a program coached by a former NFL Coach & Staff as UCLA has

Evans would be a good slot guy to start off with, I do see him in the mold of Anquan Boldin as far as his physicality, blocking, build and hands. He’s actually a little faster than Boldin 40 time wise. If he can use his size, t and hone his echnique and route running to get open, he can be a gamer.

I felt the same way about Logan but howie and co… Usually draft for the following season Logan wasn’t big enough last year to be dt but the bum they got from the 49ers was so bad they had to play him. Clarke falls into that same mold sit him on the second team for a year have him build his body up for the 2015 season.

Big at 6-6″, 315lbs, long arms and good feet.. He reminds me a little o of a Tra Thomas and Current Cowboy Tyree Smith..

there is some awful right tackles in the NFL. Reminds me how bad the QB position was a few years ago before Newton, Kap, Luck , Wilson, & Foles. Juwan James doesn’t even have to be that good there isn’t much talent standing in his way from starting on some of these teams. Johnson, Fluker, Pugh enter the league and instantly become some of the NFLs best right tackles.

OT Mike Birimo is huge, but stiff, awkward and not very athletic..
Reports are he doesn’t bend well low enough and comes out to high from his stance and gets off-balanced, etc,etc
Maybe this off-season he shows improvement and gets his techniques down consistently but a stretch at this point..
I liken him to WR I Momah who is huge, athletic but very raw still..
Wonder how he will look this Camp..
Eagles have a few of these type of Players that it’s do or move on from, Vinny Curry, Earl Wolff,Kruger, Travis Long, I Momah, A Benn.. They are all Talented, but they need to step up for this will be their final opportunity to be Eagles.. Maybe a couple of these step up and surprise us.. Time will tell

Lane Johnson played 17 straight NFL games and missed one snap total. His QB threw 27 TDs, 2 interceptions, 2 fumbles while his running back lead the NFL in rushing. Lane Johnson didn’t get hurt or come out the game in running situations like Ziggy Ansah or come out the game in passing situation like Star Lotulelei. He played every snap except one.

Geno Smith got lucky last year the TV producers changed the format and didn’t show back stage phone calls before the pick was announced so the agonizing wait of previous QB Rodgers and Quinn was never shown. The best part of the draft is the huge smiles these young men get when a team calls them and you get to see his parents get all exited and the hot young girl friend and sisters all dolled up. Instead last year they ruined the draft by showing the dingbat hosts and Goodell the whole time until Pinky Goodell hugs all the draft picks. I’d rather see the mom, the coach, agent, girlfriend and sister hug the draft pick while trying get a hat on the kids head.

Do remember that Rams have 2nd Pick from Redskins and their own at #13
So they will take Trade Offers for additional Picks & Pkayers for that Pick
Could Eagles Offer #22, #86, #RB Brown and/or TE Celek
And a 2015 1st round Pick to Move all the way down to #2
It would be a steep Price, but then Eagles could turn around and Trade Fokes to Browns, Texans, Vikings for some Draft Picks back??

I have been searching all over the internet. Reading last years scouting reports, reading what EXPERTS said about Lane Johnsons play last year, and what they predict for him this year and beyond…… so far NOT one EXPERT has said Lane was bad last year or is a bust. They all said he got better as the year went along. Yes he had problems early but got better. Fisher was horrible, almost got benched after giving the job (not earned). He gave up sacks and didn’t run block very well. Luke Joeckel didn’t even play all year, went on IR. So the Eagles got lucky that he fell to them and they made the right choice. He has a bright future and will the best of the bunch taken last year. Yes the best….Flucker is already at his best, Fisher will always be overwhelmed and was overrated, and Joeckel is in a bad situation so he’ll always be a step below.
Once they get a better RG to play next to Johnson you’ll see he is a great player. He was trying to do more bc of Herremans poor play.

Trying to figure out who the Eagles will take in round 1 ( if they do not trade out of the 1st), is an exhausting task as there are a number of positions that they could choose from. So what Im going to do is list a few positions that they might address in the first round and list the players I’d want.

CB: Kyle Fuller. Justin Gilbert ( although not too sold on Gilbert)
S: Calvin Pryor
DE/OLB: Anthony Barr ( if he happens to slip)
WR: Evans, Lee, Beckham, Benjamins. There are number here as this is a quality group.
DT: Aaron Donald (unlikely to happen)
ILB: Ryan Shazier (more likely to happen)
G: Xavier Sua-Filo

What you guys think?

Igglessb27
Igglessb27
May 4, 2014 11:38 am

I’d go with Fuller unless Barr is available still if they stay at #22. I think they trade back but not out of the 1st round. So if they do then I think they still take Fuller, if available, or the best WR left. Shazier is to small so he is out. Most of the others listed will be gone except Sua-Filo…..who is a possibility but I can’t see them taking a G is the 1st round.

OLB Shazier is a player, but at his size 6-2 &
235lbs he’s better suited for a 4-3 Scheme where he won’t have to take on as many OL head on as you do in a 3-4 Scheme
Good Player, but bad fit for Eagles
ILB Mosley on the inside would be a better fit ..
I really like Guard Su’a’-Filo but would hate to use a 1st Rounder on a Guard though he could be a 10 Year Fixture and possibly beat out Herremans in Camp as a Starter in his Rookie Season

May 4, 2014 12:14 pm

I think if Eagles stay at #22, which I don’t expect,
But if they do, I think it’s one of 5 Players
1) OLB Barr (If he falls)
2) ILB Mosley (Highest Rated Player on Board)
3) WR Brandin Cooks (Kelly loves this kid)
4) CB Fuller (Highest Rated CB on Board)
5) OL Xavier Su’a-Filo (Highest Rated OL on Board)
6) QB Derek Carr (Highest Rated QB on Board)

Now if CB Dennard, TE Ebron, DT Donald were to fall,
Then it could be one of these guys..
TE Ebron would play the Slot and be a nightmare match-up for any Defense and put Kelky’s Offense in another zone

Hey Muimuiman, how’s the land down under..
Guards in 2nd/3rd/4th Rounds that I like

1) Joel Bitonio (Nevada – Projects 2nd Rd)
2) Trai Turner (LSU – Projects 3rd Round)
3) Dakota Dozier (Furman- Projects 3/4 Rd)
4) Wes Johnson (Vanderbilt – Projects 4/5 Rd)

And I really like Brandon Thomas who will miss 2014 Season due to torn ACL at his Clemson workout-day last month
I would use a 6th/7th Rounder but he won’t see the field until 2015
So Eagles really can’t take him earlier and burn a Draft pick
But down the road, he could be a good one..

Also I agree with you about Dennard,
Don’t see the coverage skills down the field from him
To warrant a Top Pick..

This draft is never coming and Dennard to steal a GMCliff phrase will be a bust. With only 6 picks going in no time to waste any pick on an injured guy or a developmental player, enough of that. Sign them as UFA but don’t waste a pick on them.

No way Dennard will be a bust……some minor coaching and he will be a solid starter. He has the natural tools required.

Not enough catch up speed not enough length, have you really watched him play? He will lead the league in PI penalties if he starts for whomever drafts him.

Coaching can fix the PI calls…..he’s the 2nd or 3rd best CB in the draft for a reason. Sure tackler, good press guy, durable…..

There will at least 8 CB’s taken after him that will be better. Doesn’t have the strength or length to deal with big NFL receivers or the top end speed to deal with the burners, he ate up the Big Ten receivers but watch what happens now.

I’ve seen a lot of mock drafts with the eagles taking a rb in this draft and many have it in the 3rd rd if that’s so and if they were really planning on getting rid of shady it’s better to do it now rather than have the same situation just like they had with mesean and are forced to release him so if they plan on getting rid of him do it now don’t wait.

If Eagles select a RB in the first 3 Rounds, then this will be McCoy’s Final Season as an Eagle.. I think we will see McCoys touches go down 15-20% with the Acquisition and extension to Sproles and the emergence of Polk, who Kelky really likes…

who cares?

This team is just spinning it’s wheels anyways.

Get rid of a top talent only because of the cap with nothing to show for it in return, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Shady receives the same treatment.

One thing is constant……….no Super Bowl and that will never change with this organization. Save money from year to year under the cap while having the fans interested enough to spend.
The Eagles make hands over fist money by sticking with the status qou and winning it all might just hurt their bottom line…..Super bowl winning players usually cost more over all, so it’s best the Eagles keep the machine running like so.

Ship out players who’s play demand a higher salary only to replace them with a lesser, cheaper, talent.

So, let them replace shady.

LOL That’s comical. Isnt the cap going up 20 million over the next 2 years? Can you imagine the backlash by the NFL community if they would get rid of Shady for a 30 year old {Mario Bros) Sproles and his baby steps or a dime a dozen Polk. If that’s the case they should release Foles the following year and so on and so on. Paulman that 15 carris a game is fine and dandy on paper until Shady steps on the field and starts ripping off 20 yard runs. Its amazing how them 15 carries will turn into 25 when Shady is saving Barney Rubbles ass in games.

Derrick Carr commented that he was told by teams that teams are looking to trade in the 20s for him, with that being said, I expect the Eagles to be trading out of the 22 spot.

I’ve stated for a month now that a Trade with the Browns or Texans could very well occu
Eagles get the Browns #26 Pick & #83 pick
For sliding back 4 Spots which is no brainer.
Remember the Andy Reid & Chiefs are Picking #23 so if Thad Browns like Carr, which most people say they do, then they will want to make a Deal.
If Texans take Clowney at #1, which they should,
Then they will need a QB with their 2nd Rd pick #33
Which if they wait to the 2nd, Carr & Bridgewater will likely be gone
So Eagles could Send the Texans the #22 pick
For Their #33 & #65 which I would take in a heartbeat ..

If Deal with Browns
Eagles would have #26,54,83 & 86 Selections in the First 3 Rounds

If Deal with Texans
Eagles would have #33,54,65 & 86 Selections in the First 3 Rounds
Which would be the better deal to take

They could also trade back again with the 49ers from that point, for even more picks, and still get their guy in the 1st round….

Yes they could and have posted that many times here
Trade #22 to Browns for #26 & #83,
Then Trade #26 to 49ers for #30 & #129

Eagles then have the Following
#30, 54, 83,86,122, & 129 in the First 4 Rounds
This is how you build Championship Caliber Roster
The Eagles basically pick up 2 more a Draft Picks for sliding back
8 Spots where the difference in Talent Level or upside is very minimal between the 22nd & 30th Selections..
