Notes From The Phillies’ 6-5 Win Over Miami

Philadelphia Phillies v Los Angeles DodgersThe Philadelphia Phillies won their second straight game on Tuesday night, taking down the Marlins 6-5. Their record improves to 20-22.

  • A.J. Burnett pitched just five innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks.
  • Burnett had a very rough first inning, allowing two runs and five base runners. He hit a batter with a pitch, and surrendered a walk before giving up an RBI single and then later issued a walk with the bases loaded.
  • Burnett allowed a walk to Giancarlo Stanton to start the third inning, and Stanton would come around to score two batters later on an RBI double.
  • Jimmy Rollins had another productive game out of the lead-off spot. Rollins began the game with a base hit, and later scored in the first inning on a double from Ryan Howard.
  • Marlon Byrd knocked in a run in the first inning with an RBI-groundout to the give the Phils an early 2-0 lead.
  • The offense went quiet until the fifth inning. A.J. Burnett doubled with one out, and then Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer to give the Phils a 4-3 lead. It was Rollins’ sixth homer of the year.
  • Marlon Byrd got another big inning started for the Phils in the sixth by hitting his 15th double of the year. Cody Asche drew a walk, and Tony Gwynn was intentionally walked to give the team a bases-loaded situation.
  • Ryne Sandberg opted to lift Burnett early in favor of John Mayberry as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Mayberry came through with a two-run single that helped extend the team’s lead to three runs.
  • Randy Wolf (yes, the same Randy Wolf who pitched for the Phillies almost 10 years ago) made an appearance in relief today for Miami. Wolf was out of the majors last year, but has made a return with the Marlins. This was his second appearance of the season.
  • Jake Diekman took over for Burnett in the sixth, and pitched two scoreless innings.
  • Mike Adams allowed a run in the eighth inning. The veteran allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base, but managed to work out of a jam by striking out two straight batters and then recording the final out of the inning.
  • Jonathan Papelbon had a bit of a rough go in the ninth, allowing a run on a couple of hits and a walk, but managed to hang on and record the save.

Final Thoughts

The Phillies got another important division series off on the right foot with a solid victory tonight, but their odds of staying competitive may have taken a serious hit if Cliff Lee’s elbow injury turns out to be serious.

The team has already placed Lee on the 15-day disabled list, and they’ll evaluate him further before deciding what to do next.
