  • A.J. Burnett turned in another poor start, allowing eight runs through six innings.
  • Burnett allowed 10 hits and four walks. His ERA has increased to 4.41.
  • Ryne Sandberg mixed up his lineup again, batting Chase Utley second, Marlon Byrd third, and Carlos Ruiz fifth.
  • Jimmy Rollins, Utley, and Byrd combined to go 0-14 at the top of the order.
  • Ruiz went 1-3 with a walk.
  • Domonic Brown went 1-4 with a single.
  • Reid Brignac went 2-4 with an RBI double in the fourth inning.
  • John Mayberry hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh.
  • Justin De Fratus pitched a scoreless seventh.
  • Antonio Bastardo mopped up with a scoreless eighth.

Final Thoughts

A.J. Burnett just isn’t doing the Phillies any favors right now.

In his last six starts, Burnett’s ERA has increased from 2.06 to 4.41. He’s allowed at least three runs in each of those starts, and he’s allowed five or more in three of them.

Pitching through a hernia is no simple challenge, and while the veteran was able to gut it out early on and give the team some quality performances, its clear now that the injury is taking a toll on him.

The Phils need to think about shutting him down. They need to give him some time to recover, and not put any additional strain on the injury. If Burnett continues to pitch this poorly, he’s not going to have much value at the trade deadline.

Burnett will not accept a Trade, He will simply retire instead of moving to another Team, the biggest Reason he Signed with the Phils is to be close to his Family in Southeastern Pa.. It was the Phils or Orioles for Burnett or he was hanging them up..
