Notes From The Phillies’ 6-5 Loss To Cincinnati

Jimmy RollinsThe Philadelphia Phillies lost the second game of their series against the Reds on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-5. Their record drops to 25-35.

  • Roberto Hernandez pitched just four innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks.
  • Hernandez might have been able to go deeper into the game, but Ryne Sandberg opted to pinch-hit for him in the fifth inning, hoping to generate some extra offense.
  • Marlon Byrd gave the Phillies the lead in the second inning by hitting a two-run homer.
  • Domonic Brown went 3-4 with a double.
  • Jimmy Rollins homered for the second straight game, hitting a two-run shot in the seventh inning.
  • Carlos Ruiz went 1-3 with a walk and hit his second homer of the season.
  • Chase Utley went 1-4 with a double.
  • Cesar Hernandez started at third, going 2-4.
  • John Mayberry was given a chance to pinch-hit with two runners on in the fifth inning, but failed to even put the ball in play, striking out.
  • A controversial call in the sixth inning cost the Phillies a run. On the Domonic Brown double, Marlon Byrd was ruled out at the plate, while Ryne Sandberg was ejected for arguing whether or not the catcher was in the right to block the plate, which is a new rule that the league introduced this year.
  • Ethan Martin was the first to relieve Hernandez, and allowed two runs to score in the fifth inning that proved to be the difference in the game. Martin returned to pitch a scoreless sixth.
  • Justin De Fratus pitched two clean innings to finish out the game.

What was the Phillies’ record this time last year when they were a more injured team?
Can we get Charlie back yet?

This was a bad spot for Sandberg to come in and start his Managerial Carrer
He has a combination of an aging core that’s too set in their ways to change how they play ball and approach the game and then young players who are just not that talented..
A Starting Staff that’s mediocre and a Bullpen that is unreliable and inconsistent
Pitchers like Lee,Burnett,Adams are all in the twilight of their Careers
Kendrick & Hernandez are just hanging on as 4th/5th Starters
Papelbon is not that old, but has thrown a lot of Innings and has lost his some Velocity each season.. Where are all the young promosing Arms that we’ve been reading about from the Farm system the last couple of Years
A light hitting and Defensively weak OF, no power from the 3B or Catcher Pisitions and a middle Infield that are 35 Years old with a lot of wear & tear
And games played with Rollins & Utley..
In hindsight, if the plan was to give it one more season with all the Core Pkayers, then Manuel probably should have remained as the Manager..
Sandberg is stuck with little authority over the Veterans play and approach to the game with Players who have Won, earn big $$$ and gave played for Years…
