Eagles-Bears Pregame Thoughts

barbreWhat I Want To See

Alan Barbre And The Offensive Line: Alan Barbre is going to be the starter at right tackle for at least the first month of the season, and we’ll get our first good look at the offensive line with him in place and suspended Lane Johnson out.

Barbre by all accounts played very well whenever called upon last year, and has the confidence of his teammates and the coaching staff. I want to see that confidence carry over and translate into success on the field. I don’t need to see Barbre going out and mauling opposing defensive players, I just need to see that the line hasn’t been significantly weakened at all. They just need to be technically sound, and give Nick Foles quality protection.

Jordan Matthews With The First Team: Riley Cooper’s foot injury is going to keep him out of this game, providing an opportunity for valuable first-team reps for rookie Jordan Matthews.

Matthews has drawn some rave reviews from teammates such as LeSean McCoy, now let’s see if he can make an early impact with the opportunity he’ll receive.

Eagles Secondary vs Brandon Marshall/Alshon Jeffrey: The Eagles’ secondary will get a strong test early in the preseason, going up against an excellent receiver tandem that Chicago has.

Can Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher hold their own against the two big receivers? Can Malcolm Jenkins make his presence known early on? Will Nate Allen or Earl Wolff earn more first-team reps?

Development Of The Defensive Line: This could be a potential make-or-break year for Fletcher Cox. I’d like to see some signs that the former top pick is making significant strides in his development now that he’s in his third year in the league.

I’m also keeping an eye on the nose tackle position. Bennie Logan continues to be the starter, but Beau Allen has done a nice job in Training Camp and could push him a bit for some snaps. I’ll be interested to see if Allen gets any time with the first teamers.

Marcus Smith: I don’t expect to see Smith until the second half, but when he’s out there I want to see some kind of production from him. Playing against second and third stringers, I don’t think its unreasonable to look for your team’s first-round pick to be active and show some flashes. I want to see the same fire from Smith that I saw from Vinny Curry the last two preseasons when he dominated the lesser talent of the teams he was put out against.

I want to see the Eagles come out of the game relatively injury free, meaning no major injuries. My opinion on the 1st pre-season game is that it’s more like a scrimmage. You can’t take the good to seriously and you can’t take the bad as the end of the world.

Iggles, agree 100%. I’m just looking at what the new acquisitions, rookies, & depth have in the tank. Injury free hopefully.

Guys…I think I am pretty safe in saying that every fan wants their team to remain injury free, especially in the pre-season. It is a given.

Denny had some pretty good points, and I would agree with most of them. I want to see our 1st team offense drive down the field and score a touchdown on the first possesion. I want to see the 1st team defense get a strong pass rush and possibly a sack. After that, I want to see what our rookies can do, and see if any of last years rookies can take a step forward. I want to see Huff with the ball in his hands and see what kind of YAC he can generate. I want to see if Kruger or Long are worth the “red-shirt” season we gave them last year, or will they not be able to make the team? I want to see our 6’7″ Momah show off his 4.5 speed and make a catch.

Not much, after all it is only the 1st preseason game!

GO BIRDS!!!!

I think Eagles OL can sustain a minor injury
Or two, but not to J Peters or Center Kelce
I think the Eagles have enough quality Depth at OL
In Barbre,Tobin,Kelly, Vandervelde & Molk to fill in adequately
If need be..
The Position that has me concerned is at WR
Where the Fepth are either injury prone or simply very inexperienced at the NFL level as WR’s…

I respectfully disagree Biggy
Look at the Eagles OL
Besides the Starting 5 (Peters,Mathis,Kelce,
Herremans & Lane Johnson which have about a
Combined 30 Years of Playing in the NFL)
Then look a the key 4 Back-Ups in Barbree,
Kelly, Vandervelde, Tobin and new Player Grant from Texas
And these guys have all Played in the NFL with Barbree & Kelly
Starting a handful of Games…
I chalkenge you to name another Team in the NFL
With more OL on their Roster that have as much NFL
Experience.. I will give you time, but seriously, check it out
and look around the Leauge..Most NFL Teams are fortunate to have
6-7 Players on their OL with NFL Experience at most then have totally unproven Rookies or Practice Squad Tyoe of Players filling out their OL Depth Charts..

Well, I’ll be damned, Kool has come around. For real, I can see Allen taking that NT job with a year of coaching and conditioning under his belt. As far as this season, he will be taking half the snaps by late November early December as Bennie Logan gets snaps at DE. He has speed and power, check how he collapsed the pocket into the QB, that’s Haloti Gnata power. Beau knows football, glad to see you recognize bruh!

Foles has to get better at dealing with pressure. without Desean there will be games he has to buy time to allow some players to clear. You don’t have to be a speed demon QB to do this Big Ben does it all the time slide to the left or right with a big dude running top speed they can’t change direction as fast. That second int he could have played that rushing D-lineman and took his time to pass it. By week 3 we will see Cooper and Mathews in more with the starters.
Mohma looked ok, Man crush on Beau, Special teams looked improved, Buttfumble played well, Mike Smith looks the part at least covering, Vinny Curry needs to start, team is still rusty bc they don’t hit in camp but hopefully it keeps them healthy again bc these game count for nothing

I love the position we are in with him because he was a low investment. He was a bit of an afterthought going in and all last year did was give him an opportunity to cement himself this year.

Guys Jameis and Hundley in this upcoming draft there’s still time etc to gameplan a future that doesn’t include him if he busts.

right I said that last year when Vick got the start. That was perfect for “him” to not start and take over the way he did. Vick proved he couldn’t stay healthy the pressure of Vick losing the job and him starting from week was not there and he played well. This year its the perfect situation for the Eagles Kelly can go out and get a qb this year if Foles is a bust and buttfumble can user him in. but I hope he can still play so we can cont to build the rest of the roster.

Heres my thoughts on the game

– Josh Huff I think we undervalued him with all the Jordan Matthews talk
– Mark Sanchez looking like a good back up
– Nick Foles will be ok as the season progresses.
– Im sure Desean Jackson is glued to the TV right now.
– Hello. Fletcher Cox…. Would you like to make a play sometime this year?
– Sproles is a bad Mother F***er

No in depth game plan, trying things, and playing people who won’t be playing in the regular season. There is NOTHING that can be taking from this game. It’s a scrimmage and thats it!

Eaglehaslanded

August 9, 2014 1:17 am

Truth be told, Jerry Rice had a ton of drops in his rookie year, as did Terell Owens, (not DJax though), however, I still think Jordan Mathews will be a very good receiver and this Eagles draft looks to be very promising. Mathews was probably pressing, trying to live up to the hype instead of letting the game just naturally come to him. Once he starts to relax and get comfortable, he should be fine.

RegalEagle

PRE SEASON

The only thing we know is that Roc C got used. (anyone shocked?)
Rookie Watkins may be Practice squad fodder.

Smith II has athletic ability and pretty good instincts for a player with less time at the position than others.

J Matthews – Will develop.
Momah higher on list than I thought. (I really want a 6’7 240 lb WR with speed to be the 5 or 6 vs a guy like Demaris Johnson)

Not enough running plays in the first few offensive series- I believe they would have prevented some of the penalties on the first team OL and got them into the game. (But I am just a fan)

Not worried about a thing after one Preseason Game. Glad Foles threw two picks it will get him to focus more in his next outing. Complacency kills!

We have the better back up QB between the Jets and Us PERIOD and yes that is sad considering it is the great butt fumble himself. (Crap happens but that play is still funny)

Let me reiterate some of what I stated earlier this year.

Teams have no need to double team or roll their safeties now that
djax is gone, which will allow teams to set their base defense against Shady.

No one cares about the read/option because Foles is slow as hell, so every read option play the linebackers will just swarm to shady, So I have no idea why they keep running it with Foles.

Teams will force him to hold the ball which will lead to countless sacks and if he try to get the ball out fast…

Well you seen that last night.

I’m not surprised at all because this is exactly what we said would happen.

Foles is shit on the field.

I mentioned him before the Game yesterday, but someone started talking about wanna be GM’s bull, so I left the conversation alone so that the play an the field would make my point.

His lack of impact is hurting this Defense. Our Defense is going to have to be lucky again; and and our Secondary will have to play over their heads every game to get wins.

I don’t see 10.11.12 wins….I know, this is just one game, so let’s hope for progress…okay…

daggolden

August 9, 2014 5:51 am

A concern I had last night was with Matthews. Earlier in the week I had read that he asked for Boykens to cover him (a DB) and not Jenkens(a safety) and reports came out he wasn’t getting open. Then last night #30 covered him and everytime he had no separation on the play #30 was in his ass.

Weaknesses

Can have inconsistent hands at times
Passive approach catching the ball
Below average elusiveness in the open field
Hasn’t used size to his advantage
Hesitant to initiate blocking contact
Lack of top speed limits ability down the field
Drops too many easy passes
Cant beat man coverages.

I would say every one of them weaknesses showed up last night besides blocking.

TS what pissess me off is it didn’t have to be this way. My goodness the Eagles put this team in this situation to be concerned about the WR. They couldn’t wait one more year to release Djax and see what they had with Matthews and Maclin then release him. What a huge huge gamble they took. But obviously saving 4 million was more important to the Eagles than a probowl malcontent. But they saved 4 million this year because they figured 82 catches and 1300 yards was considered (not buying in).If Matthews thought it was tough going against #30 wait until he gets a look at Revis and Sherman and co. I definitely am taking Ertz as my fantasy TE. He will catch 100 balls this year. .lol They hit a homerun with Ertz.

He has a bright future, but he, and Huff are not replacing DJack….including Maclin……DeSean Jackson brought more to the Offense than these guys are ready to …right now…

Ummm, I’d prefer DJAX still be here, however, you guys do know that the starting receivers Maclin…played sparingly, and Cooper..did not play at all. A little premature to say the WR corp feels like Carolina’s minus Benjamin. Fact is, Foles was playing with back ups, Momah looked better than Benn and whoever else they trotted out. First preseason game ….as I recall, last year same people was complaining how bad the Eagles looked, season did not turn out that bad all things considered. Relax and let the 1 and 2 receivers get time on the field. Some of you guys want the Eagles to look in midseason form while playing limited snaps in first game with backup wr’s in vanilla package.

Igglessb27
Igglessb27
August 9, 2014 11:31 am

WOW…….you people are funny! DJax is gone and there is no changing that. Would be better with him, probably but the Colts would have been better keeping Peyton Manning too.
If I analyze what I am reading this is what this season looks like:
1.) Eagles go 0-16
2.) Foles is the worst QB in the NFL
3.) The WR’s will finish with 20 catches for 100yds and 1TD on the season
4.) McCoy will finish with less then 200yds rushing on the season
5.) The defense will give up 35pts a game and have 0 INT’s and 0 sacks on the season

All of that BECAUSE they released DJax. No wonder you all are running NFL teams and the Eagles staff is actually running a PeeWee team.
The 1st pre-season game IS the most important game of the season and the MOST telling. I’ve had it wrong all these years. Thank you for setting me straight.

People have said Cooper was only good bc of DJax, Maclin is no #1 and will never be DJax, Matthews and Huff are horrible….so on and so on.
It’s ok that you will banter with me bc you and gmcliff/E0S are buddies but be real. I’m sure you can read and understand whats typed.
This team will be just fine in the passing offense. Between Maclin being back, adding Sproles, Ertz another year in the system and Matthews plus Huff the team has plenty of good pass catching players.

If the offense sputters it will be because defensive coaches have caught up to Kelly’s scheme not because Desean isn’t here, now if he were coordinators would be reluctant to stack the box that’s what I think.

Like I said before, I could care less about gmcliff/E0S as a person BUT I CANNOT stand liars! He has been proven more then once to be a straight liar. All he needs to do is admit the truth and I would not even read his posts anymore.

Here is a start to coming clean gmcliff/E0S…….my name is gmcliff and I know nothing about football talent. I am a fan of the racist team from Landover Md. I am a fan of their’s bc I think their color’s are pretty. I was never a REAL gm or scout other then my fantasy sports teams…….

LOL!!! To me, That sounds like something that’s just your problem E0S….

You stated, that, he has been proven more then once to be a straight liar??….By who??, and on what subject??….

You’re still reaching, and you get madder each year over things you cannot change, or do anything about….Get some help…Why would anyone be concerned, or obsessed with the personal life, and lifestyle of another man???

I HAVE WHAT I HAVE, I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED, I HAVE PROJECTED PRO BOWLERS, and you haven’t suggested one…..I think you’re really jealous….LOL!!

Go to school, and become something, and stop hating on GMCliff.

And I told you before, meeting me face to face isn’t what you want anyway – I don’t play games with grown men – you’re better off just playing games as WIggles, E0S, _gmcliff, and others, while you play with yourself in front of your 2, or 3 laptops…

I am the man on here. Like it or not, you can kiss my ass psycho…LOL!!!

Igglessb27, are you able to post a comment without mentioning gmcliff for at least a month or longer?
You really sound like you have a vendetta against him, but I don’t understand why, because he has talked up a lot of guys who have made waves once they got to the NFL, and a LOT of them ARE pro bowlers, and lot of them are talented enough, that they would have brought something to the table for the Eagles.
What did you think of Kony Ealy’s first game? Honestly?
By some of the comments on here I think a lot of posters feel the same way I do about him; I don’t agree with everything he says but he deserves more respect then you, and that Jenkins guy give him.

focused……anyone can list 150 college players a year in their posts and they are bound to get a few right. He copies and pastes things about players and claims it as his own “scouting”. Also all players that are good players could help the Eagles, but there are other teams in the league and they sign/draft players too.

I haven’t watched the Carolina game, but I didn’t even hear his name mentioned in any highlights or articles I have read since their game.

I’m not on here looking or expecting respect. I speak my mind and I banter with people. Alot of people can’t handle me proving them wrong or the other side of their statement. Folks shouldn’t be posting stuff if they have thin skin.

Igglessb27, I have to admit to you, I have never read 150 prospects a year from Cliff. I HAVE seen that from Paulman though, but you praise him, as I do. But why, when you accuse Cliff of what Paulman does.

I don’t agree with everything gmcliff says but, I can honestly say that his mocks every year, generally have the same people on them consistently. The guy knows what he’s talking about, like it or not, and should get more respect. Paulman just told me he does, and you respect him. So, why not Cliff??

Yeah, man, if you get the chance to watch the Carolina game on replay check out Ealy; His name was mentioned all night when he was in there. He played extremely well, and may start for Greg Hardy, if legal issues get any worse. I think he is as good, or better than Marcus Smith hands down. But that’s just my opinion.

I just think this site should just be for football, or whatever sport discussion we’re having. I think it just comes down to maturity. We don’t have to insult people with every post. We should just enjoy, and respect, the point of view of everyone on here. I’m sure most would agree.

Seattle lost their 1st pre-season game- season over!
T Brady didn’t play for the Pats- 3rd string QB at best!
D brees didn’t play- career is finished!
A Peterson didn’t play- one of the WORST RB’s in the game

The logic you all have installed in the world is finally dawning on me……

1. Chip Kelly’s much ballyhooed offense came out of the gate sluggish, with Philly’s line drawing three holding penalties and a quarterback hit on the first two drives. Flags wiped out gains of 19, 13 and 8 yards for Nick Foles, who threw as many interceptions in one quarter — two — as he did all last season

3. “Making the Leap” entry Zach Ertz caught four passes for 60 yards and showed great chemistry with backup Mark Sanchez on back-to-back receptions of 18 and 35 yards. He’s a stirring piece of the puzzle for the defending NFC East champs.

Taken from NFL.com……doesn’t sound so bad now does it! Foles would have had 3 more completions for 40yds and quite possible neither INT would have been thrown.

I really liked the 2nd OL & DL Players
RT Alan Barbre is better at Guard than the at
OT and could not keep Bears DE W Young out of Foles face on almost every pass attempt..Guard Mathis played probably his worst 15 Snaps in 3 Years
But I am not too worried about him
Dennis Kelly, Dave Molk and Matt Tobin
All looked very good as Sanchez had a clean pocket almost every pass attempt.
Take away Matthews & Huff’s Drops and Sanchez threw 1 bad pass which was to TE Casey down at the 1 yard line where he threw it behind him, but overall looked good, commanded the huddle and forced a nice pace to the Offense

gmcliff……are you scared? Tell you what, I’ll buy you lunch at a gourmet place for you….McD’s is high classed for you right?

You have picked Pro Bowlers?! You should have bc just this year you listed around 100 players in the draft and said they were good and going to be studs. Hopefully a few out of the 100 are Pro Bowlers.

I don’t need to go to school pops…..I have served my country in the US Army for 6 years, your welcome…you get to be the lying punk you are bc of the freedom I defended. I have a very good meaningful full-time job and a part-time job that is for fun and helps people. You probably benefit from my part-time job! Oh sorry you don’t, I donate my pay to the needy in NJ not Delaware. Think back gmcliff/E0S…you are the one who started the personal stuff by bragging how you live in a $500,000 home (not!) and how you are a former gm (again not!).

So when you are ready to MAN UP let me know. I am an adult and violence isn’t my thing so no need to be scared. It’s a free meal for you and you can take the first step to realizing how far your fantasy life has spiraled out of control.

Just 1X post something about a player that YOU have seen or evaluated, not a copy and paste job. Matter of fact here is a chance to redeem yourself……pick 1 player from the MAC that has a chance to be drafted and tell us why. I’ll pick 1 player from a conference of your choice and do the same.

LOL!! Scared of what??

I have never listed 100 prospects in a year. I don’t have to. I pride myself on knowing who the players are, and who are the overhyped. Other posters on here have noticed that, to the point of pointing it out to Paulman who does – Though I have no problem with it.

I’m cooking Fried Turkey for dinner tonight, with Oyster Bread Stuffing, Collard Greens, Cauliflower Polonaise, and Acorn Squash, with Peach Cobbler with Whiskey Pecan Ice Cream for dessert at my home, but I think it’s a good thing you’re willing to help others, so why not start with yourself….You need it more than anyone else….

So you want to fight me because, I’m living comfortable, and confident?? I don’t think that’s anything to get shot for do you??? – Once again, I don’t play games with grown men.

You sound jealous, and you need to kick rocks, and get over it….

Man up yourself, and be a man and act like you are proud of whatever you’ve accomplished, instead of acting like an asshole

I have never copied, and pasted anything about a prospect that I have identified outside a video. I have proven myself year in and year out. I challenge you, for once, to shut up, and give us a prospect from anywhere that we don’t all already know about – evaluate him yourself – and stick to those prospects right up until – next years draft. – Put that mouth to some use.

Now, here is your chance to actually have a leg to stand on, when criticizing me for knowing what I’m talking about.

Back before the draft you were listing 8-10 players that you “scouted” and said were going to be great players in almost every post.

I am proud of what I have accomplished and what I have done and continue to do. Trust me I am NOT jealous of your life. I strongly believe it is way less then what I have and have had.

For whatever it’s worth Dept as far as my listing
All the Mocks for Eagles every Year which over a 3-4 Month Period will
Include many Players..

1) The Draft is a very fluid situation from the end of the Bowl Season,
To Senior Week, Indy Combine, the ever growing list of
Underclassman who enter to Team Workouts, to Injuries,
To off the field issues that arise and then the Free-Agency Period in which the Eagles could lose Key Players or Add Key Players to solidify
A Position of need
2) I believe strongly that Chip Kelly looks for certain type of Players
Who a big, high motors, smart and most importantly are “Versatile”
Meaning they can play more than 1 Position and are ideally, likely to have to
Contribute on Special Teams early on in their Eagle Careers
(Besides a QB of Course)

2) I look at the Top 150-175 Prospects as listed by multiple Draft Sourced
and read up on Players bios,Backgrounds, Injury History, what individual and Team success, the type of System and Coaching they received, etc, etc and see if or how that translates to the NFL and more importantly how it translates to the Eagles Schemes and Roster needs, Current Players Age & Contracts Status
To the Position of Eagles Draft Position
In relation to the other Teams around them as well which I enjoy doing and then
Sharing with everyone..

3) I do not to list Players who I don’t believe will
Be available for the Eagles at their Slotted Draft Selection
So for me to list good Players Khalil Mack, Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans,
Etc,etc is a moot point since they won’t be on the Board

4) Then I look at the Draft Board with Strength & Weaknesses of the Positions in relation to what I believe are the needs of the Team and then
Begin the process of which Players I feel are the best all-around fits
To Coach Kelly Schemes and type of Player and go from there

This Past Draft was a very deep one at WR, CB,
RB, and about average along OL, LB’s, Safety and not very deep at Pass rushers, DT’s, & TE or QB’s in my opinion..
Once you got past the 20th Selection, there was a drop off
And not very much difference in the upside from #20 to #50 or so
So lots of variations as their usually is…

Sometimes my thinking was DE, then Safety,
Then WR based on Eagles needs
Other times my thinking was OL,LB & WR
And other times, WR,CB, DT and on and on
So if you want to know why I list so many potential Players
Leading up to the Draft, this is the reason why..

I called the Eagles Trading back to Browns from #22 to #26
Based on the projected Board and the Fact that Browns needed to
Come up with a QB with one of their 2 1st Round Picks
(Though I thought it would be D Carr instead of Johnny Football)
I was surprised by the Eagles then Trading back up into an earlier 2nd Round
selection to get Matthews for I did not see this coming…
But all in all, this past Draft went pretty much as I expected
And the Eagles did land sone of “Chip Kelly” type of Players
From Huff,Watkins,Hart, Reynolds to Allen..
Now whether they can all play at the NFL level and be Productive
We will all have to wait & see..
I believe the first 2 Picks in Smith & Matthews were more of Roseman/Player Director, whose name escapes me at the moment, type of Selections where the rest of Draft was mostly Kelly calling the shots of who to select though I am sure it was a Group effort , just my opinion of how it went down.

That’s not just for Cliff, but for any other Posters who say I choose
150 Players in my Mocks..
Lots of things change from January thru the Draft
And my Mocks reflect many of the Variables that go into Player Evaluations
On whose Rising, Whose Falling,
Good Workouts, Bad Workouts. Injurires, off the field issues,
Etc,Etc.., bottom line is that things change and my Mocks
Change based on what I think the Eagles will do…
No Rocket Science on my part, just some fun and one of
My passions in keeping up with the Draft Process..
I just don’t list the same 20 Players that everyone likes when the
Eagles realistically have a shot at maybe 1 of them…
Anyways, to each their own, all in fun…

For some of the newer Poster’s for the heck
In reality, I have it down to about the same
Group of 30-40 Players over a 7 Round Draft

Watched sone Pre-Season Games this weekend as it rained down here all weekend…
So far a couple of Rookies looking good
WR/Returnman Dri Archer (Steelers)
WR/Returnnan John Brown (Cardinals)
(I had him mocked nany times to Eagles out
Of Pittsburgh State,KS)
DE Koby Ealy (Panthers)
CB Dequueeze Denard (Bengals)
RB Bishop Sankey (Titans)
RB Jeremy Hill (Bengals)
RB Tre Foster (St Louis Rams)
DT Aaron Donald (SL Rams)
RB Terrance West (Browns)
OT J Matthews (Falcons)
TE. Austin Sefarian Jenkins (TB Bucs)
WR Kelvin Benjamin (Panthers)

All had nice debuts for their respective Teams

August 10, 2014 3:44 pm

Looking back at this years past Draft
The only Player I did not Mock at all
Was WR J Matthews..had him as a high 2nd Pick but never to the Eagles
(DCAr was very high on him all Draft Run up)
All the other Players the Eagles selected , I mentioned many times
But had M Smith as a 2nd Rounder and not a late 1st Rounder
But Huff, Watkins,Hart & Allen I had down many times in the mid to late rounds
But had Safety’s Ahmad Dixon and the kid from Mich State mentioned a lot more than Ed Reynolds who was another Player that DCAr was high on,
For whatever it’s worth..

Just think if Eagles selected Guard Sua-Filo at #26

If you recall
I actually had #26 Guard Su’a-Filo in some Mocks
With M Smith or DE Kareem Martin at #54..
With the main reason that yes a Pass-Rusher is needed
But looking at both Eagke Guards in Herremans & Mathis
Who both are on the wrong side of 30 and both with large Contracts remaining that I thought a Stud Guard who could compete and even best out Herremans for 2014 was not a bad way of thinking
As we now know since the Draft, Marcus Smith would not have lasted past
#35 or so for Teams like the Patriots, 49ers,
Cowboys and Redskins were all high on him as well…
On a side note and maybe Biggy can verify down in Jacksonville
Jaguars WAr Marquise Lee has already been called out by his HC Bradley for having to step it up and be ready to Play
Apparently he played in 16 Snaps the other night,
Missed many assignments, routes and blocks,
Was in poor conditioning and has missed some practices
As well so not a good Stsrt for him which just goes to show than none of us
“Armchair GM’s” ever really know about these kids until
They get out on the field and perform…
The thing I really like about MSmith situation is that he has 2 cagy Beterans to learn from in T Cole & C Barwin who are the type of Teammates that will take the extra time to show the way for Younger Players, which will help his learning curve big time..
M Smith has the physical tools, the work ethic and
And desire to be a good Player. So all in all,
A very good Draft Pick in my opinion, and whether he went is 5-10-20 Spots sooner where some had him projected, who cares, I want him on my Team
and see him a major contributor on the years ahead..

If the Eagles would have drafted Sua-Filo this town would have exploded. The amount of people crying about drafting Smith would be doubled about drafting a Guard.
No matter who the Eagles would have drafted in the 1st round haters would have bitched and cried. What’s so funny is that everyone who bitched about taking Smith has been quiet since Fri night. He played pretty well. Was in the backfield often, made a few plays, and held his own.
People on this site can only go off of what they see in games or highlights and what experts write and say. The personnel responsible for scouting and evaluating players have access to the players coaches, teammates, friends and family. ALOT can be learned about a player that way. So we basically talk good about players we like and bad about players we don’t……not really evaluating but more like high school politics.
Going into the draft NO ONE thought OL was the greatest need for the Eagles. A pass rusher or WR was the biggest need.
I can’t wait till the regular season, all the haters will be chirping when the Eagles lose and will be silent when they win. When Smith has 4 tackles and a sack the haters will be saying “the other team sucked, anyone could do that”.
Then at the end of the season we’ll have the people claiming they said so and so was be a stud, and that so and so would be a dud.
Bet if I asked who knew Brady, Morris, and Westbrook would be as good as they have been or were someone would say “I knew”. So no matter what someone on this site will try to be the “best” instead of just bantering.

Keep doing what you are doing paulman, you seem to be someone thats real and can handle criticism. I’ll banter with you all day.

GMCliff- RE: Fletcher Cox,
This is a make or break Season for him
If he truly wants to be an upper echelon DL in the NFL
I will give him a little tine benefit for he’s a Natural DT in a 4-3 Scheme and was moved to play the 5 Technique as a DE in a 3-4 last Season
So I will give him, Trent Cole, Cedric Thornton,
B Graham & V Curry all a little slack for they were basically playing positions in a 3-4 which asked all of them to do different things and responsibilities
I think all of them did improve somewhat as the last year progressed
But fast forward to 2014 and it’s put up or move out as the learning curve and adjustments now should now be a natural reaction for all of them but no doubt that Fletcher Cox needs to step it up big time..
He has the ability, the size, strength and quickness to make it happen,
But we need to see it on the field in game situations
I will reserve judgement until this Season Plays out..
Eagles really missed 2 Players who could have stepped right in at D
In this Defense and make an impact and that was Lamarr Houston and or Arthur Jones, but woulda, coulda’s are out the door and Cox,Logan,Thornton,
Curry & Company need to get the Job done..
I do like the additions of B Allen, B Bair, J Krueger & Taylor Hart to the mix for they are young, big and quick.. A Rotation of these 6-7-8 Players should keep them all fresh but getting to the QB has to be a priority if this Secondary
Is going to have a chance of slowing down today’s Receivers that are dotted all around the NFL or at least minimizing big play opportunities..

What does Cox have to do to get some “love”? The job of a 3-4 DL is to occupy blockers, thats it. If a DL in a 3-4 gets 4-6 sacks in a year thats all bonus! In a 3-4 def the LB’s are supposed to be the superstars, so where is all the hate for our LB’s? They are good LB’s but not superstars. That’s where the improvement needs to be.
To evaluate players you need to understand the scheme they are in. I’m pretty sure Chip would have jettisoned Cox if he was as bad as alot of you folks think.

I think we all want to see more penetration and plays finished by Cox in the Backfield more often versus both the Run and Pass
Your right about DE’s in a 3-4 Scheme not getting many Sacjs for that will be the OLB’s Job on Passing Downs to do..
Bottom line for me is that Eagles only had 37 Sacks as a Def Unit last Season and need to get 15 more into the 50’s to really improve as a Def Unit
Cox needs to get his a Share as well as everyone else in the Front 7
And even an occasional Safety Blitz here and there..
The Eagles need to get 20-25 Sacks from their DL
And 25 from there LB’s and few from their Secondary
Then they will be on their way to improving their terrible 3rd Down Stops
And conversion rate which has been the Achilles Heel for this Defense and has been for about 5 years now…

Cox has to make his presence felt point blank period.

Iggles although DL are not supposed to be pass rushers in a 3-4 they are supposed to hold the point and force inside penetration forcing the play into the LBs.

Cox has to do that on a regular basis. He is not doing that as of yet…and I’m judging his reg season from last year. I could care less about preseason.

5 Things I took away from Eagles 1st Pre-Season Game

1) RT Alan Barbre is not a suitable replacment
For LJ for the first Game
2) QB Mark Sanchez can be a viable Back-Up
To Nick Foles
3) The TE Corps will be relied upon heavily, as the Young WR’s Corps mature
4) All the Draft Picks contributed like they belong in the NFL
5) Danarus Johnson, Roc Carmichael, Curtis Marsh are

I will say within our division offensive line play will be huge in deciding the East. Right now no one team was has any continuity through the lines.

Game 3 speaks to your continuity and where you are at as a team. Thats the biggest thing to get out of it….are certain players progressing and does the offense have rhythm. Defensively are the players picking up scheme and who is dominating within it. Game 4 is just to review fringe players and special teams and to look at other teams potential castoffs around the league.

I also think if we will see any trades this preseason it will be around game 3. We will know more about depth on the lines and possibly WR if Rileys foot is still doodoo.

Agreed.

Jadeveon Clowney went from practice freak to exposed in one preseason game.

I dont understand how fools get riled up off of one game that quickly.

Hell even in the regular season, you have to judge the season in quarters.

If he sucks that bad you can kick out Herremans to RT and sub in a guard. To early to say Babre sucks because they can help with play calling and blocking help on his side.

Week 1 he was all alone on an island with no threat of run blocking which is his strong suit.
