Thoughts From Eagles-Bears

folesbearsCause For Concern?

Nick Foles was unimpressive in his first action of the preseason.

Foles’ ability to protect the football, throwing just two interceptions last year, has been pretty well documented. In this game however, Foles was anything but protective of the ball.

The third-year quarterback threw two interceptions, and nearly threw a third.

On the first drive of the game, Foles delivered a weak pass on a 2nd and 7 that was nearly picked off by Lance Briggs. The pass was nowhere close to any Philadelphia player, and shorthopped just in front of Briggs.

Two plays later, Foles threw a ball that was deflected and found a trio of Chicago Bears for his first pick of the night.

Later in the first quarter, Foles killed a drive by throwing off of his back foot and behind his receiver for another easy interception.

The quarterback that we saw tonight was not the game guy who threw for 27 touchdowns and two interceptions in 2013. There were too many mistakes, checkdowns, and not a lot to be impressed with.

However, I wouldn’t worry too much just yet.

Last year, Foles had a pretty rough go in the preseason as well. He had a couple of turnovers in his first game back then as well. We need to see much better from him next week, but this performance while enough to raise an eyebrow, isn’t enough to get overly alarmed about.

Smith, Huff Shine

I came away from last night’s game very impressed with Marcus Smith and Josh Huff.

Smith played most of the second half, and finished with a couple of tackles. The first-round pick made a couple of nice plays, and he didn’t look lost or confused out there. It gives me hope that he’s making good early strides in his development, and may have an opportunity to get on the field sooner than we expected.

We saw Smith’s athleticism on display throughout the night.

Josh Huff has elite speed. Huff looks like he could potentially be the team’s long-awaited solution as a kickoff returner, a need that the Eagles have been unable to fill ever since losing Brian Mitchell over 10 years ago.

The third-round pick averaged 35 yards on his four returns, and took one to the house for a 102-yard score. He also caught a pass for three yards in the redzone.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • Interesting that Ifeanyi Momah opened up with the first team offense. Momah caught a 12-yard pass from Nick Foles on the first play of the game. Momah made a tough catch later in the game on a ball thrown behind him by Foles.
  • Evan Mathis drew a holding penalty in the first quarter.
  • Matthew Tucker lost a fumble, but he looked pretty good, rushing for 40 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.
  • Mark Sanchez did a nice job in his first appearance. On his second drive, Sanchez got the team down to the goalline with two quick passes to Zach Ertz. Sanchez also ran the offense at a good pace for a Chip Kelly offense. He got the ball to the line quickly, and didn’t give the defense enough time to gather themselves.
  • Matt Barkley had an inconsistent showing. At times, Barkley was making some nice throws, but there were too many off throws as well, including an interception.
  • Jordan Matthews caught four passes for 14 yards, and also had a couple of nice moments blocking. However, the rookie did drop a couple of easy receptions.

Defense

  • Connor Barwin had a good night. Barwin had a couple of solid tackles, including a stop of Matt Forte in the backfield on the first Chicago play of the game.
  • Mychal Kendricks was active as well, picking up a couple of good solo tackles. Kendricks also had solid coverage down the field on a third down in the first quarter that forced the Bears to settle for a field goal.
  • Damion Square got the start at nose tackle with Bennie Logan out.
  • Cedric Thornton made a nice stop for a loss on Matt Forte in the first quarter.
  • Good showing for Nate Allen. Allen was in on a couple of stops, and made a nice interception in the first half that led to the team’s first touchdown.
  • The Eagles’ secondary was no match for Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey. The two combined for six receptions, and drew several penalties on the Eagles’ defensive backfield.
  • Malcolm Jenkins delivered a couple of nice hits in the first quarter.
  • Vinny Curry picked up a sack.
  • Jaylen Watkins had an up and down night. Watkins was burned for a deep touchdown in the second half, but came back to break up a few plays and also came down with an interception.
  • Beau Allen did a nice job collapsing the pocket on Jordan Palmer in the second quarter, nearly creating a fumble.

Special Teams

  • Damion Square blocked a field goal in the first quarter.
  • The return team did a nice job creating a lane for Josh Huff to run through. Huff was able to hit the hole hard and fast, and flew into the endzone.

Final Thoughts

To say I leave this game with mixed feelings is an understatement.

On one hand, I feel very good about what we saw from some of the young players. Marcus Smith, Jordan Matthews, Josh Huff, Jaylen Watkins, and Beau Allen all had some really nice moments that make me excited for what they could potentially bring to the table. To see immediate promise from almost the entire draft class from one preseason game is pretty remarkable.

But then you have Foles’ performance clouding the rest of the evening. Again, I don’t read too much into it, but there’s no doubt that it gives us something to think about for the next week. We need a bounce-back effort in the team’s next game.

I didn’t see anything in fletcher cox, if this guy can’t play more disruptive in a contract year then he just don’t have it. Kelly’s gotta put the best players out there, from what I saw last year and last night, Curry is the better option.

Totally agree. Fletcher Cox has underwhelmed since he was drafted. I’d like to see Vinny Curry start to get more of those snaps since he appears to be a more disruptive player.

Here’s what I am concerned about even though its the 1st Pre-Season Game is the fact that the Bears has 491 Yards of Offense,,, That’s almost 500 Yards of moving the ball versus the Eagles Defense.. Remember this was Bears 1st Preseason and the Vanilla Game plan too and the Yards just came way too easy. even from the Back-up Players and 3rd Stringers..

The Positives is that just about all available Players did see some action and I don’t believe there were any injuries.. All in All, lots of nice Plays by many of the Young Players as the Veteran Players still get into football shape.. but this Secondary needs Nolan Carroll out there and maybe another CB off the Waiver Wire for roc Carmichael, Curtis Marsh are not stopping anyone.. and Watkins will need a season or 2 before

Paulman I know you are a decently astute , knowledgeable fan , so why isnt Vinny Curry playiing ? Do 1st and 2nd more?I have read it may because he is from andy reid era.Do you think Kelley would do this?Im just a casual fan , who loves the Eagles , but that sounds far out for me . Wat do you think about the Vinny Curry story ? Will we ever know/

Thnx Pat & Welcome aboard…
I don’t think anyone of us can’t answer why Curry isn’t given more snaps on early downs for he makes an impact whenever he gets on the field.
I can only assume that it has to do with his Practices, Preparation
And relationship with his Coach’s and DL mates..
Maybe he’s immature, late or sleeping in meetings
Or just hasn’t grasped the Playbook entirely..
But it’s a new Seadon and Camp and maybe those issues, if they ever occurred are behind him and he will gain the Coach’s Confidence and get on the field more.. All I can see from a Fans perspective is what most of us see and that’s a high energy Player who makes things happen when he’s on the field.. Hopefully this continues..

I’m not too worried about Foles cause he played the same way last preseason but isn’t it funny that he played that bad and Tannehiill was perfect under his new OC ( our old QB coach)? I’m keeping my eye on this.

Denny what I take from this game? My continued dislike of preseason football, the positives? Nobody got injured and Huff’s ability translates better to games, and Smith looked good dropping in coverage but we need him to rush the passer.

Brandin Coojs has a real possibility of being Offensive Rookie of the Year
Do not that HC Sean Payton is probably the best Coach in the NFL in developing WR’s for his passing Schemes and accurate QB in Dree Brees
Look at the success that Many WR’s have had in that Offense to
Colston, Meachem, Moore, Still and now Cooks
I expect him to have great Stats and impact his Rookie Season
In comparison, Chip Kelky is nowhere in Sean Paytons league as far as developing WR’s goes, at least not yet..
Time will tell, but Saibts Receivers are asked to run routes,
Catch and move while Kelly has his Receivers focus more on Blocking
For the running game..

Meachem, Moore, and Still are successes? Really?! Thats being AWFULLY generous. Meachem is a #4 at best, Moore could be a #3 on a bad team and Still….well they drafted Cooks while Stills is going into his 2nd season, enough said.
As far as Chip developing WR’s…..Cooper finally had a good year last year, everyone is crying about DJax being gone bc he had a career year last year and Ertz is basically a WR playing TE and he is tabbed to be a breakout player this season.
As far as developing WR’s, blocking is a KEY part of the game. The Saints are typically near the bottom in rushing while last season the Eagles were very good. WR’s must block if the team is going to be successful rushing the ball.
Sean Payton has only produced 1 WR and 1 TE in his time at New Orleans. Its not like he is churning them out.

My point IJ is that Saints HC develops very good NFL WR
Meachem was nothing in San Diego. Lewis Moore was effective as a 3rd/4th WR for a couple of Seasons..
WR Stills had a very good Rookie year under everyone’s radar
Now you give Payton & Brees a Young WR with great Talent like Cooks,
And the sky’s the limit for him..
Cooks will not be asked to block much for Coach Payton
Does not Value the running game as much as Coach Kelly
I also believe that Eagles were targeting Cooks at #22
But Saints grabbed him and then the Eagles went to Plan B which
Was to trade back with Browns for an extra 3rd Rounder (#83rd)
just like I stated they would..

I know Nick Foles threw 2 ints, but I still think he looked really solid for his first game back in action. If it wasnt for the all those damn penalites god only knows what the offense coulda been like last night. I tell ya what, Im a little worried about this season. Not from how good the team is going to be but from an official standpoint. 22 flags?!?! and this wasnt the only game where flags were raining. This point of emphasis on defensive holding and pass interference is hilariously sad and out rageous. This is what hppens when you put billionaire crackers upstairs running the leagu who have never suited up in their lives. How can you make this game anymore benficial to the gamn offense? Defense is just as much as part of the game. These are professional athletes at the highest level flying downfield. Incidental contact is going to happen. I mean shit LET THEM PLAY. I really hope this doesnt translate into the reg. season. Games will be slow, and relatively boring and could affect the eagles tempo more than any other team in the league.

Not worried about Nick Foles, as I know what he does and can do in regular season games when it matters. I like the fact that Josh Huff is faster than I thought and that he did not drop the ball on his first TD prior to going into the end zone. Special teams looked very good. Beau Allen had a dominant performance showing brute strength and surprise quickness and agility. Marcus Smith flashed his athleticism in coverage and run support which was a concern for some on gcobb. We have some good backup RB’s and I like what I saw out of backup center David Molk. Taylor Hart had some good hustle plays and stood his ground at the LOS. Roc Carmichael still can’t play. Momah had a couple of nice catches..not a believer in Benn or Maehl. Last time I saw so many flags I was at the United Nations. Let them play.

Damaris Johnson needs to be released immediately
He can’t even run up a fair catch a Punt
What a waste of Talent & Speed we saw his 1st Camp 2 Seasons ago,
But he plays scared and zippo field prescence in my opinion
To play Special Teams. Cut the Chord
The 2nd/Back-Up OL & DL looked pretty good in the 2nd quarter
In my opinion.

These first couple Pre-Season Games will all average about
20 Flags thrown as NFL & Refs emphasize the Rule Changes
Which happens every couple of years..
It is what it is and is happening in every Pre-Season Game that I’ve seen
So far.. It’s the only way the Refs will be able to enforce these new Rule Changes is by tossing the Flags..

For the last damn time!!! Cox is not going to have eye popping numbers because that’s not his job in this 3-4 scheme. Davis wants the linebackers and secondary to make plays. The d line is suppose to occupy the blockers. That’s it. This is not Houston defense where Cox can rush the passer. He will get his chances. Be upset with Davis not Cox. It’s Davis scheme

Army…the knowledgeable amongst us who understand the role of the 34 DE know this. Cox and Thorton are not going to make flash plays, they are to do the dirty grunt work, i.e., collapse down stopping the run and occupy O line men so the linebackers can freely flow to the ball, not go after QB. Cox will be fine.

I agree Army and have stated so many times
I am still waiting on any answers from the group about the Stats on any
pure DE that plays in a 3-4 Scheme and have not received anybody who puts ups Sack Stats..
The 3-4 Scene is devised to allow the LB’s the get the majority of
Sacks..
Name me a pure DE in a 3-4 Scheme from the Steelers, Ravens
Packers, Patriots, Jets, etc,etc that has had double digit Sacks
And I am not talking about hybrid OLB like a Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware,
Tambi Hali, Terrell Suggs, Aldon Smith who play more standing up
And are moved around in a 3-4 than a pure hand on the ground DE in a 3-4

Here is my take on RB Chris Polk..
His body is beaten down,
Do remember that he was a 4 Year Starter at Washington University
And is their Career Rushing attempts and Yardage RB, the problem is that
He gmCarried the ball over 600-700 Times in College and his body is breaking down on him
So for me, I nice on from him and I would never Draft/Sign
A RB with more than 2 Years as the #1 Back at a Power Conference School for these guys are too beat up once they hit the Pro’s with 500-600+ Carries at a major Program.. See Trent Richardson,Mark Ingram, as recent examples
Get me RB with 400 Carries or less at College
And after 2 Years, they need to go Pro for their legs and bodies will only take so much pounding ..

I do like Polk though for Red-Zone/Short Yardage but he must be able to contribute on Special Teams as well
You can’t have a 3rd/4th RB on your 53 Man Roster who just Carries the Ball only, the numbers just don’t add up..
But Polk needs to get on the field for any of these things to happen

I am more concerned about RT Alan Barbre
Who was just abused from little known DE W Young who was in Foles face on almost every pass attempt
When Sanchez and 2nd OL with Lane Johnson was in there at RT
Sanchez had a clean pocket on almost every pass attempt
Barbre is better inside at Guard than at OT
I hope Dennis Kelky gets sone reps at RT for LJ
Replacement the first 4 weeks
But make no mistake about it, Foles passes were poor from his back foot and
Were throws you expect from a Rookie and not a 3rd Year Vet..

Its preseason it doesn’t matter. You cant pick and choose who you are concerned with. On one hand they tell you the QB has been average at best in practice throwing ints and in the game looks scared and awful but its just preseason. On the other hand sound the alarms on certain players. Which one is it? It matters or it doesn’t? Or it only doesn’t matter when its convenient. With excuses to justify. Please let some of us fans know what is allowed and what isn’t.

From CSN Philly Chip just doesn’t like Graham or Curry
They are destined to the bench.

It seems backwards, doesn’t it?

Vinny Curry and Brandon Graham are two of the Eagles’ best pass rushers, but they both come off the bench. Curry’s four sacks last year ranked third on the defense. Graham, who played in very small doses, had three sacks last season, but Pro Football Focus rated him as one of the best pass-rushing outside ‘backers per snap.

Graham and Curry were disruptive forces again in Friday night’s preseason opener against the Bears at Soldier Field (see Instant Replay), with Curry sacking Jordan Palmer and Graham’s pressure leading to an interception.

And both came off the bench.

And they’ll continue coming off the bench.

In a game that’s all about the quarterback — and the guys who hit quarterbacks — the Eagles are keeping ceilings on two of their most promising quarterback-hitting weapons. This is team that ranked 31st last year in sacks per pass attempt against them.

“We’ll see,” Curry said. “Right now, it don’t matter what it is. My thing is, man, when I step on the field I want to help my team win and just keep showing I’m a key player.”

It was impossible not to notice the difference in defensive intimidation when the second unit replaced the first against the Bears.

The starters barely touched Jay Cutler, who converted three 3rd-and-longs on a 13-play, 69-yard touchdown drive in the first. Cutler completed 7 of 10 passes on the drive for 80 yards and connected with tight end Zach Miller (not the former Raider and Seahawk) on a 10-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-7.

Then Cutler left, Palmer entered, the Eagles subbed in their second team and suddenly the complexion of the game turned.

On the very first play of the second quarter, Curry barreled through scrimmage and ransacked Palmer on 3rd-and-8 for an eight-yard loss. On the Bears’ next possession, Graham bolted around left tackle Michael Ola and clobbered Palmer as the quarterback heaved a pass downfield that wound up in Nate Allen’s hands.

Strangely, when asked about his second string’s effort, coach Chip Kelly mentioned rookie Beau Allen and practice squad incumbent Brandon Bair as two guys who stood out. He called Allen a “disruptive force” and said Bair seemed to be “flying around.”

Graham and Curry?

When asked about them, Kelly said he needed to see the tape.

“There was one time they didn’t block Vinny at all,” Kelly said. “A couple of times they let a couple of guys come free. Travis Long, they called him hitting the quarterback in the head, but he was unblocked on a couple plays.

“There was one play I think Brandon and Vinny were in the backfield after the snap, I don’t think either of them got touched, but it could have been a move by them. I’ll have to check that out.”

Curry’s personal scouting report seemed slightly more enthusiastic.

“I feel like I was awesome,” the third-year pro said. “For the most part I felt like technique was really, really good. I think I played really hard, but I also think the whole unit played hard.”

Graham said his pressures were a byproduct of having Kevin Greene, a five-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker who played 15 NFL seasons, helping out the coaches this past week in camp.

“It’s definitely a good feeling,” Graham said. “I wish I could have sacked [Palmer], (caused a) fumble. But it was still was a turnover, no matter what.”

No matter how well they play this preseason, Graham and Curry probably won’t get any closer to the starting lineup. Curry is behind defensive ends Cedric Thornton, an outstanding run defender, and 2012 first-round pick Fletcher Cox. Graham is stuck behind veterans Trent Cole and Connor Barwin.

But if they keep hitting quarterbacks, it’ll be hard to keep them off the field on all passing downs.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself,” Graham said. “I’m trying to go harder than I was last year. Consistency is the big thing with me. If I can stay consistent … I’ve got a spot. It’s just all about me staying consistent.”

I don’t know about you but what tape does Chip need to see? Its clear to every Eagle fan in the world that when Curry and Graham come in the game they get after the QB. I don’t need any damn tape to tell me that. If I was Curry and Graham and I have similar roles to last year Im first talking to B Davis then when asked by the media Im starting to talk a little bit. Like maybe I need to be traded or released Ive done all I can and its obvious there is something going on here that Im being kept on the bench.

I don’t think they need to start, but need more opportunities. Its the defensive coordinator responsibility to utilize his personnel appropriately. In regards to those two, Davis has not. You need a pass rush against a passing game if you’re not getting it done with the 3 up front then throw another capable player out there in replace or with. Eagles currently have the personnel to mix it up 4-3 to 3-4 that’s what they should do.

All Curry and Graham do is get after the QB, which is a good thing EXCEPT when the other team runs the ball! Graham was a MISTAKE when he was drafted and continues to haunt the team. Curry, for some reason just can’t catch a break. He is fine in a rotation, as a pass rusher. He was never a stout run stopper in college and isn’t not destined to be one in the NFL.
The team needs good rotational players like him, doesn’t mean he should be a starter.
As far as Graham goes, clearly he needs the motivation to be a good player. He has not been good at all with the Eagles except when he is called out….that is a HUGE problem.

James Casey to the Packers, Rams, Falcons,Texans, Jaguars or Steelers

Dag, he needs to separate himself from Hoyer and Thigpen. I think Hoyer is a better QB right now, if Manziel gets the green light, it will be due to politics if he and Hoyer continues to play on the level they are. I did not see a deep ball from Johnny, that’s what I was looking for, good short and intermediate passes though.

Honestly, I’m not a Manziel fan, but I am trying to be impartial. I think he looked ok, I didn’t see anything spectacular, the NFL is a faster game, the long runs he got away with in college will not be as available to him in the pros. I think he and Hoyer looked equal tonight. It’s a feather in Manziel’s hat because he’s a rookie.

Manila had 17 drop backs and took off running 6x. 35% scrambling = QB fail.

( wait! what?!? Vinnie hates scrambling QBs even when they are white? This goes against the TS and others ethos!)

Anyway, you can put on a flashy show (sometimes) if you run around like that, but you cannot win consistently in the NFL like that.

If the guy learns how to work from the pocket, then he might be ok, otherwise he’ll fail as they all do. My $ is on fail, because I don’t think you can just take a guy who’s been playing one way for 10+ years, and completely change his game. His instincts to take off at first sign of trouble are hard wired.

Also, he doesn’t really seem like the kind of guy who is going to put in the kind of commitment it would take to change now does he?

Was late on a few Passes where he had guys open and waited a tad too long
To thruw it but, but ran the offense and set the Tempo
RB Terrance West from Towson State looks like a real keeper at RB and poor Dion Lewis with another Fumble..
His NFL Career about to come to an end for the Former Eagle and Pitt Panthers between his injuries and ball security issues..
Why they never drafted a WR with all those Picks in the first 3-4 Roubds is beyond me…

Not good not bad but okay. Plenty to like and to suggest he could be a starter in the league. Not enough to unseat Hoyer in my opinion. But enough to feel good about the pick and his future.

Paulman this is the part about Chip that bothers me. What is his problem with Graham or Curry? It’s like he is going out his way to not acknowledge them. He should like talent that works hard. Some people is just so talented they don’t need to overachieve. But Jackson work ethic was questionable out of college and in the pros. But they hitting QBs put them the hell in the game.

I am not sure what Chip Kelly’s Deal is about Graham/Curry,
Maybe the fact thstvthryvare leftovers from AR and not really “his guys”
Or something off the Field that we will never know about
Late to practices, sleep during the meetings, issues with Position Coach’s, etc
But it’a been obvious since halfway thru last Season that
These two players get after the QB better than any others on this Roster and need to be on the field more often.

That’s the downside to the culture Pman. You wanna know what’s the “real” deal. But the fraternity of the lockeroom is never broken. It has to be a reason they are not on the field. And why not trade them? I understand it takes two to tango. But pass rushers are at a premium. So either we want too much or they are offering too little. It makes no sense out best pass rushers not playing.

Very very concerned,
Nick Foles could not read the defense. I saw the same things from him this year that cost him the starting job in last years training. Not getting rid of the ball fast enough, Making pre-determined throws(when the blitz was on, they obviously knew the check down too. 2 int’s) He looked scared and confused at times. Chalk this up to experience? Yup! When the receivers were not there, it was clearly a lane for him to step up in the pocket, and create something. He instead was a statue in the pocket. Legs in cement. A deer in headlights! Ya, I’m Concerned….. Can anyone say Bobby Hoying ? Huh Daily news scholars!

No one is mentioning Momah! ya a stretch to make it but I think Chip Kelley likes this guys size, and ability. He caught everything tossed his way, and played significant time. With the way Mathews’ mouth is blowing up more than his skills, I can see Momah sticking around, and getting some significant time in certain offensive packages.

Impressed with Josh Huff, and Marcus Smith. When you enter this league, you are supposed to keep your head down, learn, and let your work do the talking for you. They will both be significant contributors this season.

Didn’t Mark Sanchez reach the AFC Championship with the Jets in like his second season? DID HE ? Are you really surprised by his performance in this system. Nick Foles better get it right, and get it TIGHT!!!!!!!!

We just got rid of Michael Vick, and now that Sanchez is on Christmas Nick heals The MEXICAN JOKES ARE STARTING TO FLY ?

That’s right, Say what you feel. This conversation was boring, dishonest, because no one is telling the truth about what we saw.

I am concerned with foles play but more so that dam oline played terrible. What was barbre doing he looks unatlhetic at OT he;s better suited at guard. Matthews played ok needs to show up and make catches but he will be fine. Now for on the good side it looks like this draft class will be pretty good. Marcus smith is really athletic and looks like a playmaker. Josh huff showed us why we drafted him. Watkins got burned but he came back with confidence and picked off a pass, that shows resolve. My favorite rookie who will be our steal of the draft is Beau allen. This guy looks the part and just what the doctor ordered. Abusing the center and guard and showing real quickness, excited for his future. Vinny curry and Brandon Graham need to play more, they are the best pure pass rushers. WE SHOULD JUST TRADE COX, done with him he is just a guy on our team. Bennie logan can play nose or de so cox is replaceable. Our d line should be beau allen, vinny curry, thornton, taylor hart, joe kruger, and a guy cut from another team. Momah should get that 5th wr spot. Goodbye benn, jeff terrible maehl, damaris one good season johnson, trey burton. Also goodbye to acho, clay, phillips, square, ROCK THE SHIITTEST CORNER EVER CARMICAEL, curtis marsh, villanueva, and lindley. WOW…THIS IS SOME CRAZY ISH HERE ABOUT DEADSKINS QB’s from NFL.Com

Kirk Cousins outplaying Redskins QB Robert Griffin III?
The Shanahans might be long gone, but the Washington Redskins’ bizarre quarterback drama shows no signs of abating any time soon.

After Robert Griffin III struggled in joint practices with New England last week, members of the Patriots organization opined to ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss that Kirk Cousins was the best quarterback on the Redskins roster.
Reiss specifically cited Cousins’ edge in “running the offense, fine-tuned mechanics and how decisively the ball came out of his hand.”

Griffin attempted just four passes in the preseason opener, a 23-6 win over the Pats, but we couldn’t help but wonder if the footwork issues that dogged him last season have yet to be ironed out.

As well as Cousins played versus the Patriots, though, there is no hint of controversy in Washington.

Of the 45 quarterbacks who threw at least 100 passes in 2013, Football Outsiders graded Cousins as the least effective. Other NFL teams are no longer clamoring for his services.

Griffin, on the other hand, remains the face of the franchise with a 2012 Rookie of the Year award on his mantle. He impressed Gruden with his difference-making physical gifts and mental acuity this offseason.

Just last week, Gruden told NFL Media’s Albert Breer that he expects to see a mixture of RGIII magic and mistakes once the regular season begins.

“He’ll do some things, I know, on game day,” Gruden said. “He’ll jump around, make six guys miss, throw a bomb for a touchdown, and I’m sure I’ll high-five him. But if he does it again and it’s a 12-yard sack-fumble, then what do you do? You gotta take the good with the bad, but we’re trying to eliminate the absolute negative plays, the sack plays, and play situational football a little bit better.”

There are bound to be a few bumps in the road as Griffin makes the transformation to pocket passer, but there’s no reason to look over his shoulder at Cousins in the mean time.

I’m with you there. Everyone keeps forgetting that the goal of showcasing Cousins last year was to show:

1. He was better than RG3
2. If he didn’t supplant him (RG3) get a trade for him.

None of those things worked. Texans, Raiders, Tamps definitely are in need of a QB – NOW but def during the off season. If he was so great they would have unloaded him – or announced a QB comp where him and RG3 would compete for the job.

Hell I liked Cousins, thought he could be starter material – then I saw him play several full games and then thought…maybe not. Maybe he’s just a really good backup.

This isn’t even about RG3 – it’s about the idea that Cousins is at all starter material at this point. What’s funny is that folk regularly buy into Pats trolling. THAT crack me up every time.

You don’t know if Cousins is starter material or not because he’s been in a clusterfuck of organization and offense in Washington. Under the Shanny’s their offense was tailored to Subway Bob and were held hostage by it with little continuity going into year 2. The assumption that he couldn’t be a starter would hold more legitimacy if they didn’t give into a diva 2nd year player and started Cousins week 1 last year. However the possibility fat he wouldn’t fall on his face was enough to scare Bob and put pressure on the Shanny’s to start him week 1.
So the season implodes they bench Bob then throw the kid for a couple games after the coaches and players quit on the team. Cousins played like a guy who had 1 start in his career. Flashed potential and showed rookie mistakes. It was NIGHT AND DAY in terms of pocket awareness in comparison to Bob and from passing standpoint he showed he could play.

No one traded for him because he didn’t show enough to warrant anything higher than a 3rd plus we can thank Andy Reid on killing the backup QB trade for “potential” young QBs.

I’m here in DC area the dirty secret is Robert still doesn’t look good in terms of pure dropback passing. He has a cannon for an arm but his down field accuracy is not where it needs to be and him and Djax were yet to be on the same page before he pulled the hammy and ankle.
This was eventually bound to happen to Bob because he wasn’t developed properly and the hype train for so our of control.

Throw in the fact he’s a black QB in DC and the town is now split and when he struggles the pressure is thick around here lol.

If Matt Cassel could start games last year and Terrelle Pryor no reason Cousins can’t.

And with all that I’m not fan hahahahaha

Last Year for Cousins in reality means very little to most when playing for a Lame Duck Coach in Shannahan and a Team that had already quit on themselves.
So it not a real good showcase time for Cousins just like it wasn’t for Foles when playing for the Eagles & Lame Duck Coach AR the last few weeks of 2012..

As incompetent as the Shanahan’s were, at the end of the day RGIII is responsible for showcasing his talent and ‘selling” himself to his team, fans, and the league as the right guy to lead the team. He didn’t. Injury recovery or Shanahan, much of what I saw was on him. Everything else is EXCUSES. So to Cousin’s no being able to sell GM’s in a qb starved draft on having the goods to lead a team, SPEAKS VOLUMES. To blame his inability to show trained eyes that he’s the guy on the coach, the owner, racism is a joke(but very much expected). As far as reposrts go that he’s outplaying RGIII in training camp and preseason. SO WHAT. Shit for 2 years straight Foles has been outplayed by the other qbs on the team in TC and PS and that hasn’t discouraged his faithful or team brass….YET.

We don’t need help at the WR position barring injury. So many want to still get swept up on the DJax hype that in typical Philly fan fashion we are overlooking what we have. Its still early but IMO we have something SPECIAL in Zack Ertz. The ability to play 2 TE sets and have both Celek and Ertz on the field is going to be advantage very few teams have. I was down on Celek going into last year but for a majority of teams hes a starter. The ability to split a TE wide and teams having to adjust by either going nickel or staying man in base defense and assigning a safety will lead to one on one battles on the outside. Now throw in Sproles who can efficiently run out of passing situations keeping a defense honest against the run you have problems on the field everywhere. If there’s a threat to WR position its if the line starts to have injuries or poor play because your passing game is toast with constant pressure.
If I took anything away from the offense Friday is if Ertz has taken another step having a TE that’s a legit downfield threat after 10 yards will open up the ENTIRE offense.
Plus Sanchez loves and he was better Game 1 so he should start because GM 1 means everything!!! (That’s sarcasm for the dumbass types and for the ones who just wanna turn an argument sideways lmao)

Again, another realization that defense is required to be successful…But yet, cats want to give Sanchez credit for going to AFC championship games..This cat has more INT’s then TD’s for his entire career, and cats talk about he’s better than this cat, better than that cat…bullshit, he’s ass! You’re right. History shows that many lauded qbs were the benefactors of great defense. I watched Terry Bradshaw win 4 riding the tales of great D. The minimizing of the winning qbs factor was conveniently magnified when the “mobile” Wilson won. Yet I still got to see Joe Namath’s manufactued greatness every year. Art Snell should have gotten the mvp. Broadway Joe saw his defense devastate the peyton manning of his era, Unitas, But all folks then and still to this day talk about was how great he was and a HOF to boot. Yeah…ok…lol

Not to Overhype, but the next 4-5 Days may be the most important Week of the Eagles 2014 Season.. Having these Workouts & Pre-Season Game with the Patriots, I believe will set the Tone for the Start of the Eagles Season. and Remember that the Patriots laid a real dud last week without Tom Brady to the Redskins, so Belicheck will be on his Players real Hard, and Brady will be all fired up for his initial action in the Pre-Season..
Also Cary Williams shooting his mouth off about the “Cheaters”
just add more fuel to the fire, but believe me, tom Brady lit up the Eagels during last Seasons Joint Workouts and Belicheck will want his Team playing at a high level after being embarrassed by the Redskins

Word is that good Friends, Owners Jeff Lurie and Robert Kraft have made a Nice “Gentlemen’s Bet” that whoever loses this Game moves their Franchise to London starting the 2017 Season..
Have you ever seen an Eagle in London??

“Paralysis by Analysis” ..

Week # 2 in the Preseason s the Be All – End All for the Regular Season and I don’t have a good feel about this Week

Patriots 34 – Eagles 19

The reports coming out of the 3 days of joint practices more important (in my opinion) than the game.

Last year Foles (allegedly) looked like a young QB (expected) and prob the reason Kelly made the mistake of selecting the wrong QB….anyway, I am very interested to see if the kid looks better this year, especially after the bad first week.

During the practices the Eagles will run through a lot more of their play book than they will during the game.

Also, Brady reportedly tore the Birds D apart for 3 days….will that happen again? Probably.

Biglion821
Biglion821

With the Patriots secondary led by Revis and Browner there is little to no chance Foles looks any better this week. Again who cares unless or until he regresses during the season it just doesn’t matter, by the way he played very well last year during the preseason Vick just played better that’s why he won the job.

Here’s the point.

Shouldn’t we see a more confident presence from the Quarterback position after the amazing 27 TD’s 2Int’s every been talking about from last season?

Shouldn’t there be a total command of the offense now from Nick Foles?

Why does he look like an unseasoned rookie in preseason when it should be a walk in the park against vanilla preseason defenses?

He still look like a deer in headlights when defenders get within a couple feet from him.

The truth is Shady McCoy is the straw that stirs the Eagles cup on offense and not the quarterback.

Foles is asked not to lose a game and do the bare minimum in this offense and that’s just not good enough for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

You think Peyton Manning or the Cutler’s of the world or Brady’s success would depend on the running back?

Couple that with the exodus of Desean Jackson which helps opposing defenses play without fearing a burner blowing the top off their defense, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Foles is just a guy who can easily be replaced in this offense as long as Shady McCoy is there.

So, why not get a more dynamic QB with a stronger arm and can improvise when things breaks down.

If this season is as disastrous as I predicted maybe we can get Marcus Mariota who can take this team to next level for years to come.

Let’s sleep walk through this season in hopes for Mariota 2015.

Songs (aka Richard Sheppard), you are seriously the dumbest football fan on the planet. How do you crucify your QB after a couple series in a meaningless preseason game? You think Foles is the first star QB to not light up his first preseason game? C’mon you schmuck!!!! And how on earth do you say that Foles was asked to do the bare minimum? What QB doing the bare minimum throws 7 TDs in a game? Also, how did your Christ and Savior RG3 and the Redskins do in preseason last year? I believe they were 4-0 which means you probably blew a load in your pants talking about how they had a real QB only to see them go 3-13 when it counted.

No Songs after 2 series in a meaningless preseason game. There is nothing to see or draw any conclusions. I don’t care if Sanchez looks like an all pro this preseason until Foles shows signs of regression in real games it really doesn’t matter. If he fails then they’ll start looking towards QB’s in 2015.

Millner….Paul, the buyer beware was called on him before he was drafted by GMCliff. He continued the trend of Alabama Secondary that has been unable to transition all that hype to the NFL.

Unfortunately, all that wanted him drafted by the Eagles, were wrong in their evaluations. He was even benched last year for a good portion of the season. His career, is not off to the greatest of starts…..

Yes indeed Cliff, I stay away from Drafting Alabama DB’s, OL and RB’s
with any High Draft Picks… They are all maxed out once hitting the NFL..
Dee Millner, along with RB’s Mark Ingram & Trent Richardson, Safety Mark Barron, OT James Carpenter, LB D Hightower, CB Kareem Jackson, CB Dre Kilpatrick, LB Courtney Upshaw all have this Season to step up big time or will all be regarded as “Busts” and on their way out of the NFL..
You know me Cliff, I am not a Big Fan of Alabama Players translating into the NFL, their Bodies, Physically are maxed by the time they are 22 Years and cannot sustain that Athletic Superiority once hitting the NFL
They Receive Fantastic Pro-Style Coaching while at Alabama with the Nations Best Facilities to give these Players a great edge while in College, but once they hit the Pro’s, they are on even ground and then they decline as their Bodies begin breaking down by the time they hit 25

DJ Fluker had a very nice Rookie Season last Year,
as even did Former Eagle King Dunlap in that new Charger Offense, so obviously their Coaching and Schemes are working real well …
There are other Alabama Alumni from recent Drafts – Barrett Jones which has done little and even this years big name OL from ‘Bama named Chris Kouandijo is reportedly really struggling and having major problems up in Buffalo already

Bit one sided to hammer a team who has an abundance of players make the NFL and because they arent all studs then say they dont produce talent.

Marcel Dareus is a monster. Eddie Lacy Monster. Julio Jones Monster.

Fluker looks promising and Warmack started 16 games although was not overwhelming at all. I wished we got CJ Mosley.

There CBs tend to get exposed because in College Alabamas pass rush from the front 7 covers up a ton of flaws.

I dont think Mark Ingram is a bust actually think he is a really good back in a system that doesnt compliment him well. With all that being said Saints havent given up on him so Payton has a soft spot for him.

They had almost 50 players on NFL rosters this preseason….thats a ridiculous stat.

I think I was speaking specifically of Prospects from Alabama’s Secondary specifically..

Mark Ingram was the Heisman Trophy Winner, but I just don’t think he is an impactful NFL Player, no matter what team he would play for. No speed, no jig, and jive nothing really special about him, and his skill set.

I disagree on Ingram. Don’t think hes a superstar back but I think he is a very good quality back. On a run heavy team he would definitely be a workhorse back and he looked fine getting the rock put in his stomach when they needed to run on us last year.

Again if the last three backs a school has produced is Ingram Richardson and Lacy thats not a bad crop of backs and Lacy is an absolute STUD.

Oh, I agree on Lacy too…But, He also was injury riddled all last year, which would be my only concern about him. But I am one that thinks that their RB currently – TJ Yeldon, may be the exception if, and when he gets to the NFL.

Remember what Paul was saying though. Some of these high profile school Prospects peak WHILE THEY ARE IN College, so when they get to the Pros – There isn’t much left…..That’s not just a coincidence….

For me, Richardson, Millner, Kareem Jackson, Dre Kilpatrick, and Ingram are all examples of that.

Also the Offensive Line talent may have been the major factor that helped with their production more so that their individual talent – as far as the Running Backs are concerned.

Spot on Cliff,
That’s exactly what I mean,
These Alabama Players are trained and Coached like Pro’s
Under Saban at a young Age (18/19) so by the
time they are 23/24, they are maxed..
I am not saying that Alabama doesn’t produce Quality Players for the
NFL, but I am saying that I would stay away from
DB, OL & DL from their Program with early Round
Draft Selections.. Especially DB that generally play soft zones
Due to Bama tough Front 7 every year..

IzzellJenkins

Barrett Jones is coming off of Lisfranc surgery beginning of last year so 2013 was a complete wash. I like his potential. Cyrus has bust written all over him though…physical freak on the college level but on the NFL level he cant just get by on that.

I am bit suprised on Mark Barron though…i thought he had a chance to be special. However he should shine under Lovie if he is a player. If Lovie cant get anything out of him well he is dfeinitely a bust.

For the Record, not picking on Alabama who runs a Great College Program
and gets some of best Athletes in the Nation to Play Ball there, I just believe with the High Profile of the their Program means that every Draft they have Players who are Over-Hyped and end up being Over-Drafted..
Same can be said about the USC Program when they were Kicking ass
U Of Oregon under Chip Kelly did not provide a lot impactful NFL Players
Ohio State, LSU, Georgia, Texas have have underperformed as Schools with lots on Players in the NFL, but many who last their Rookie Contracts and never become the studs they were in College or thought they were.

He’s an overhyped College Football player that will be a bust. He will get a chance to start because being the teams fist round pick, and politics will dictate it to be so…but they will regret it as they have the last few times they drafted a QB in the 1st Round – Like Brady Quinn, and Brandon Weeden – their games don’t translate to the Pros…

EHL, but our very own Foles has looked like shit all TC and in the PS. And all -myself included- are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt even though many feel this is even a bigger year for him. Many need to see more to shake any suggestions of FLUKE coming after his name. So why wouldn’t I give a rookie who was far more successful than Foles was in college, the benefit of the doubt? Not picking an argument, just using the overwhelming rationale used on our site in regards to OUR qb’s play now and in TCs and PS past.

We can all name QB’s from the past that had shown great potential (Hoying, Kolb quickly come to mind) only to flare out into a disaster. I get it, and can see where a fan needs to see more to be convinced. I need to see more, but at this point he is our best option and his upside is still very high IMO.

daggolden….are you serious? Yes there has been white QB busts such as Tim Couch, Matt Leinart and Tim Tebow. BUT the teams that drafted them didn’t give up much if anything to draft them. The team from Landover gave up WAY more then most teams would give up for P Manning. He hasn’t played a full season and his new coach has pretty much already said that RGVick is a bust and the only reason he is starting is bc of the owner Danielle Snyder. Hence RGVick is a bust. RGVick should have not been the starter as a rookie and he shouldn’t be the starter now! Manziel has way more upside then RGVick had. RGVick is a weak version of McNabb.

RGVick has 1 great season of college football and has been average at best in the NFL. Manziel had 2 seasons better then RGVick’s 1 season of college ball. Manziel is also EARNING his right to be the starter where it was handed to RGVick.

RGVick is also a cancer, as former teammates of his has stated bc of his relationship with Danielle Snyder. So far its been nothing but good reports about Manziel and his teammates.

Manziel won’t win ROY but his career will be better then RGVick who is 1 more knee injury from being out of football. I said it and I’ll stick to it. I am a man who stands behind what he says!

Hey Biglion…….most players could suffer a knee injury this year and come back. RGVick has had 2 knee injuries, a 3rd would take away his legs which ARE his best asset. He is not a pure passer like Manning or Brady so take away his legs and he is finished. He cannot make it in this league as a pure pocket passer. It has NOTHING to do with him being black or white as you state that it does, he has to do with the fact that he just isn’t that good.
Now let’s see how honest you are…..would you really sign V Young or B Quinn? Not a single person in football would unless they are trying to lose their job.

gmcliff…..Manziel has all the same tools that RGVick had coming out of college except Manziel is more accurate and has never had a knee injury. Manziel also isn’t being babied by his owner which is making him a harder worker. In RGVick’s first season the team told him to just do what he does, he didn’t have to work to learn a system. Manziel is learning a pro-style offense as a rookie and earning his playing time. Now that RGVick is having to learn an offense he isn’t even the best QB on his team.

That definitely has to be your personal perception, because no one in their right mind would believe any of that…seriously……There isn’t a starter today that didn’t have to work to earn his spot…and Cousins is not a better QB than Griffin..Period

And Manziel has so far to go to even make his mark in the NFL, It’s asinine to believe he’s better than an accomplished; already established NFL QB, based on his college tape, and 2 quarters against the 2nd team scrubs.

That has to be your prejudice for Manziel, because that explanation is loaded with the tannin of preference..
