Eagles-Patriots: What To Watch For

Nick FolesThe Philadelphia Eagles will be practicing with their Friday night opponent.  In other words, the Eagles must “go easy” in practice, yet at weeks end they can actually hit the same guy in the mouth.  I understand the notion that something is gained by practicing with another team, but I have to admit, it’s a bit awkward at the same time.

As for the game itself, all eyes will clearly be on starting quarterback Nick Foles.  How will he bounce back from two interceptions and the barrage of scrutiny that has since followed?

What if he were to repeat such a setback, the Patriots have a solid defense, made some key upgrades in free agency and will have the luxury of watching Foles all week long in practice.  Would the fans and media excuse the performance based on it still being just the preseason?  Will they blame the week long practice for providing the Patriots with a close hand look for how to defend the Eagles offense?

The offensive play-calling and audible cadences will change come game time versus the Patriots.  Players are going to carry out that built up aggression and hostility collected throughout these ‘joint” practices.  When all of the trash talking and late/unnecessary contact was made, players remember every bit of it, and will have the opportunity to respond “appropriately” come Friday.

There are plenty of things that I’m looking for in addition to improved play by Nick Foles on Friday night.

-Linebacker coverage against the pass– I need to see the ability for our linebackers to cover the tight-end.  I was not pleased with Ryans or Phillips; both looked uncomfortable manning a mediocre tight-end.

-Improved route running by wide-receivers-If the Eagles are going to get to open by their route running and not rely as heavily on the deep speed; you need to be flawless with this plan.  There should not be plays where receivers are breaking at the same point on the football field.

-More rookies please!  If I could take one thing away from the game against the Bears; I have positives and negatives about every member of the 2014 draft class.  The thing that I like is that I have more positive than negatives.  I want to see the potential impact these seven players will have on our team come the regular season.

-Special teams– It’s exciting to have return players who can “take it to the house.”  It’s also exciting to see guys like Chris Maragos and Bryan Braman.  Braman was stride for stride with Huff on the long kick return and Maragos demonstrated great vision chasing down the return man.

-Maclin and Cooper- I want to see “both” our “starting” wide-receivers on the football field.  The important thing is to be healthy come regular season, but the two also need to gets reps for both their sake and for the comfort of Nick Foles.

-Nolan Carroll– There has been a lot of buzz around camp about the free agent acquisition.  He was unable to play versus the Bears due to injury.  Roc Carmichael is not going to provide reliability as a 4th corner; he is average across the board.

The. Biggest Game in the History of Pre-Season Football…
Eagles must dominate and send a message out to the rest of the
NFL… Starters play the 1st Half, All Out Performance vs Belicheck,
Brady & Co…

Disagree completely.

These practices are much more, important than the game. Bellicheat (and I’m beginning to think Kelly too) HATES preseason games.

Bellicheck shows nothing in the games, does not gameplay, runs nothing, and just hopes to get them over with.

Both reams will run more of their regular plays/ formations during the practices than the games.

From all accounts, the Eagles are much further ahead than they were last year. Both offence and defense.

Very good reports from yesterday. Hopefully that will continue today and tomorrow.

Vinnie, of course paul is being a goof (I hope so). The results of these games mean less to these coaches then just about anything they do over the course of the preseason. As you say there are some nice reports coming out of NE but keeping an even keel…reports out of camp are just meant to get hits on blog sites

the defense will be improved…not because of the camp reports… it just makes sense that they continue to progress. I think there is still a lot of square pegs in round holes (4-3 players in the 3-4).
The offense will be very good- foles will never duplicate those numbers which the fools will point to the departure of jackson or that he isn’t the real deal. but he will be very productive, make good decisions for the most part.

Belichsck doesn’t even play his starters like that does he?

What to look for: No (major) injuries.

What are you talking about?

My complaints about the receivers have been the same before they even played a game so that wasn’t game specific.

And you act like a person has to care about the same thing game to game. Ultimately a pre-season game with a team that likely will play their starters less than most doesn’t mean much.

Also remember, Kelly and bellicheck seem to have a very friendly relationship goin back years.

What happens to that if the Eagles send a safety blitz that gets home and ends the Pats season….or vice versa?

The game will be beyond vanilla and I won’t take much from it because neither team will be running what they will run in the reg season.

So….what I am left with are reports of individual battles in the practices, running plays against new looks from another team etc, and from all reports, the eagles did very well across the board – much better than last year (and much better than the other team that did the same last week) so that’s encouraging.

Here’s another way to put it…again looking at the Pats/skins example from last week. Where do you put more stock? The reports that for 3 days the Pats tore the Skins D apart, while the Wsh offence was completely stimied, or the Wash win in the PS game? I guarantee you the practice performances were much meow telling of where those teams are.

Same this week for Eagles/Pats. Practices are more important.

As for your question Jeff. The o will be better. Perhaps (and only perhaps) less explosive, but much more consistent, with longer drives, more TOP and just as much scoring. Maclin, Sproles, 2nd year Ertz > Mesean.

D will be improved, but still at least another year away.

daggolden

We were scoring to fast and were to explosive. I would much rather have longer drives. Setting them franchise records on offense was tabu. Who the hell wants to be a explosive offense. I would much rather have a 12 play drive instead of a 4 play drive. Makes sense to me. Maybe McCoy will get 700 carries this year because we scored to fast last year. Makes sense to me.

its an embarrassment that the NFL calls them pre-season GAMES!!! they are not games they are nothing more than scrimmages under bright lights. make the fans pay ticket prices and get some extra tv money– its a joke. So many teams go 0-4 in preseason and go on and have a great season and many teams go 4-0 and have dreadful seasons… much ado about ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

RealTalk777

Then what the heck is pre season all about. Yes you will see more “vanilla” but you will see some things that teams have been working on all training camp in these games…you don’t use the preseason not to work on things, you would like to utilize in the regular season. Gives you an idea what works, what doesn’t…Its all about evaluation, trust, pay close attention to Friday’s game, and I guarantee you will see somethings in the regular season too.

RealTalk777
RealTalk777
August 13, 2014 11:19 am

Wow….I feel enlightened…The D will be improved, huh? ha, that’s the safest bet you can make about the Eagles team this year…….When you have a defense that grades out to a C-, they better be improved come the next season. There’s tons of room for improvement. From safety play, to CB, to DLine…LB’s too… An improvement to C, C+ grade won’t cut it. Unless the Eagles use their defensive players to their skill set, the improvement will not be enough.

If the Eagles would have practiced against the Patriots in Week 8 of last season they would have done better…Them doing better could just be a result of chemistry, understanding the system better….not necessarily individual improvement. You can’t worry about how the Skins did….the Eagles are on a higher level, they proved that last season.

Anyone that believes this “The game will be beyond vanilla and I won’t take much from it because neither team will be running what they will run in the reg season.”

I absolutely agree the defense will better simply because they have a better understanding… Have there been upgrades in personnel? Maybe.
Preseason is a chance to work on timing etc… Individual battles are nice to watch but as for the big picture nothing is revealed. Will you see them run some of the same plays in regular season…of course don’t be stupid. You will see it in different formations, different blocking schemes etc. the coaches, using the coaches films have things to look at but really they could t care less about the game

Point is ey could do it all in full contact scrimmages and get as much if not more out of it then they do in “game” conditions. In a scrimmage the ball can be place in situations that teams want to work on… Red zone, short yardage, long yardage etc and you can run the plays multiple times in multiple sets without worrying about the clock or other formalities of game conditions

The Eagles should of kept Djax and took one knee after every 1st down to extend the drive so instead of scoring in 4 plays it would of been around 8-9 plays.

Jeremy Maclin has been “toasting” Darrelle Revis during 1-on-1 work at this week’s joint practices.
To be fair, beat man Jeff McLane admits Revis doesn’t appear to be going 100 percent. But it’s still notable that Maclin is winning this battle, especially considering he’s only 12 months removed from an ACL tear. On Tuesday, Maclin drew three flags on Revis and beat him deep for a touchdown. It was more of the same early in Wednesday’s session. Clearly healthy, Maclin has WR2 upside as a key piece of Chip Kelly’s plan to replace DeSean Jackson.

What you are doing is going by what was reported….Why not consider that there were team interested in DJAX reported by other sources. Approx 6 teams were trying to get at DJAX when he was released. What I find interesting is no one traded for him, but there were teams waiting in the wings to sign him.

Does that receiver rating include TE’s? If it doesnt then its a meaningless rating. In this offense receiving threats arent regulated to just WR. Receiving threats from the backfield (Sproles McCoy) and at TE(Ertz Celek) make this one helluva of passing offense.

If we would have let DeSean wal like we should have in his free agent year and not signed him to that contract he would be the Dolphins the version of Mike Williams.

A career 50 reception 5TD WR with more nuthugging fans than I have ever seen. Im sorry but keep it real. The kid made plays but ELITE? If you think that you know nothing about the game of football point blank. He is a dynamic talent but he is more one dimensional then what is talked about.

I could care less about the media gang stuff and theory that was posted. Pure football…he had one great year…UNDER CHIP KELLY.

But yeah lets show typical pessimism and nonsense because most people on here thought Kelly would fall on his face….and he didnt…and he did it his way…and he continues to do it his way…and it pisses people off. LMAO its that simple.

Like the posters who said in this very forum the Eagles were cooked when Vick went down. Then it was McCoy will get trashed with Foles. Then it was Foles is a fluke….then its the Eagles schedule….then its this then its that lmao STOP THE NONSENSE.

You can’t come down on a player because of how he was utilized. With AR as coach, DJAX was used predominantly used as a stretch the field WR. Yes he was thrown in the slot from time to time under AR….But Kelly moved DJAX around the field on more occasion. He was finally utilized the way he should have been his entire career. The system plays a major role into a players production and that has to be considered.

Let’s please end the DJAX nonsense! He was cut because

1) the team is shifting to bigger WR’s – evidence – there are 13 WRs on the roster and only one (Demarius Johnson who I don;t think anyone on here thnks is going to make the roster) is under 5’11 – the Eagles want BIGGER WRs that can contribute in the blocking part of the game (I think they are all over 200 lbs as well) as well as run short bubble screens

Keely stated that teams (the Saints in particular) were using a man on the LOS to jam and hinder (hold) DJAX up and he had trouble fighting through that

2) His salary – evidence – his contract

3) This nonsense of ‘he stretched the field’ BS – every team played man coverage with a single safety over the top – evidence – Kelley and every WR ont he team have stated many times that was the defense they faced and that most teams game planned to stop McCoy – not DJAX –

4) DJAX had attitude problems back when Ried was coach – didn’t he get suspended by Ried for a game – and it appeared this same attitude carried over to Kelly’s time – didn’t we once watch a diva WR destroy the team with his childish attitude – evidence – Ried DID suspend him for a game and multiple eagles have gone on record as saying DJAX did not ‘buy in’

agree or disagree, he’s gone – will the eagles ‘replace’ his number – I don;t know – ask me in Jan – till then its all BS (like pre-season games)

Devils advocate to that Big is if you can eliminate a WR from making an impact on a game from just taking away his go route then he is not an elite multi faceted WR and more of an elite SPECIALIST.

I got a young kid who literally does everything fast in camp right now High School AAU track speed…..if a DB gives him cushion and plays physical he disappears and if a DB can play physical at the line and stay with him with help over the top hes done.

You’re Jenkins point is spot on however…game tape also shows that Keenan was in his ass all game until he got hurt and DeSean checked out early after it wasnt going well. Bum comes in and suddenly he comes alive is not a coincidence.

However I can go back and pull up post after post on that pick…BUST…REACH…WORST PICK EVER…BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH.

If he is the top backup to Barwin going into week 1 I will be MORE than happy.

If youre saying he hasnt shown anything than I guess we are going to agree to disagree. Kid is a player IMO.

Antwan Barnes was awesome rushing the QB out of the 3-4….he sucked at everything else. If the kid is picking up the scheme by week 1 and Trent Cole is off to another slow start I guarantee we will be more sets on the field that have both Smith and Barwin.

I like and completely understand the way they are bringing him around. Pass rush…either he can or he cant….its that simple however you need versatility out of your 3-4lbs they have to make plays against the run pass and in coverage. If I see Trent Cole or Brandon Grahams stiff ass hips in coverage I will break another remote.

Davis is playing this smartly in my opinion. If you have to OLBs that can cover you can unleash Kendricks more get more exotic with your blitzes etc. Plus you’re not relegated to one side being pass rush dominant etc. Alot of times last year our defense was predictable as shit because you knew in critical passing downs Cole was going to rush and Barwin was going to cover. It would be nice to have the defense guessing from time to time.

Heres some good news. Word out of NE camp is that the Patriots were really tested this week. It was night and day facing Foles vs facing RGIII last week. Foles had 2 good days while RGIII was all over the place. NE also had thier way with the Redskins defense last week which was not the story vs the Eagles. Brady made his plays but was stopped and had to work for everything he got. But like fans said if preseason means nothing I guess TC means nothing as well unless we are picking and choosing the good stuff vs the bad stuff.

More to it than that DAG. Like Bill Davis said you are evaluating individual personnel on the basics. You arent running exotic blitzes and zones. You arent showing dynamic plays on offense. The two biggest attributes of Kellys offense is PACE and SCHEME. They can try and execute pass and rhythm but they arent showing ANYTHING scheme wise on offense.

No different than the Redskins not showing ANYTHING in the preseason. Not one read option nothing….than BOOM first game vs The Saints subway Bobs rookie season showed craziness out of the read option.

I disagree Big from years of a betting standpoint, bad teams that cant score quickly tend to get beat quickly against the better teams in the league.

If the Eagles are up 14 early forcing the Jags to become one dimensional quickly it should be over fairly quickly.

I do understand the rust first game jitters first game on the road sentiment etc.

However from a betting standpoint this a double digit lock for week 1 and should be played on the first half, money line and points.

I don’t care if the Eagles beat the Jags in week one with a score of 7-6… winning is all that matters.

As far as preseason goes… What I look for on Friday is #1) no injuries, especially to the folks projected to make the team. #2) decent performances by back ups and people wanting to make a push for a roster spot… preseason is one of the few times to really be able to evaluate depth. #3) hopefully the refs step up their game and stop throwing so many flags!

Jaguars 23 – Eagles 21 on a Game Winning 58 Yard FG with Time Expiring
big play on Jags Final Drive was a 15 Yard Late Hit on QB C Henne by Malcom Jenkins on a 4th & 13 Yard Play which kept the Jags Alive and put them into FG Range…

Don’t worry about Maclin’s injury folks. Now, that Djax is gone it’s all about the recievers who “buy in”.

Talents means absolutely nothing in Chip’s offense.

This season will be a momumental “Reality Check”.

The WR pos is one of my main concerns. Forget Desean just looking at what we have now I don’t see threats. maclin is pretty good but his body will go through all kinds of changes getting use to playing again. Factor in Maclin has never been a model of health anyway and we are counting on a avg wr in Cooper. Who is going to make plays? I hope fans aren’t thinking they can match down the field passing to TE all game. Its a shame bc now you have a young QB in Foles who will take most of the blame and likely lose his job if this no name wr corps doesn’t work. We suffered through no WR years with Dmac who saved games with his legs time and time again early on. Waiting on Huff and Mathews will kill Foles here he can’t afford to look bad but with young and slow wr you will get holding on to the ball sacks and T.O. not to mention Shady will be pissed getting keyed on game in and game out. Until somebody proves they are a threat this Offense won’t be as explosive last year and there is a high chance nobody will emerge and Celek and Ertz will catch 110 meaningless passes for 6 scores between them smh. I do not want to go back to the poor outside wr days Mathews has to be stud or we are right back in the draft next year now looking for QB and WR.

And that is why you rejoice that the Ealges are in a (very) weak division.

If they take care of their division rivals (4-2 or 5-1) than you can still win 9/10 games with the less than stellar WR corps.

Im not so sure we do that well in the division. At the start maybe but by the end of the year NY will be ground and pounding and Wash should be past the adjustments of a new coach. Wash has a very goo RB and way better wr corps RG3 is still a special talent everybody was raving about year 1. Not worried about Dallas but if NY or Wash gets hot late its anybody’s division.

2-3 Things so far
1) if Refs are going to call Def Hold/Interference on almost every Pass-Pkay,
Why should any NFL Offense bother Runnibg the Ball
I would pass every play and probably get a 5 Yard Penalty
And 1st Doens all the way down the field

2) Sanchez is the Best Free-Agent Signing during the GM Rosenan Era

3) Danarus Johnson has no business being in a NFL Game

I am sending out 4-5 Receivers out on passes and chances are there will be illegal contact, holding after 5 yards for a Penalty and a automatic 1st Down
The NFL is becoming like “Arena Football” which is a disgrace..

The refs are working out the kinks and its a review for them as well. Its better for them to make more calls in the preseason then less calls. They dont get downgraded right now for bad calls etc. Its basically their preseason as well and I doubt you see that many penalties come game 1.

Maybe a Practive Squad Pkayer and be groomed as Sproles replacement for 2015.. I also like how Sanchez is 5 steps back and ball is out of his hands
He trusts the calls that being made and delivers the ball quicker to his Receiveres than Foles does who it apiears is thinking a little too much to not make a mistake instead of trusting the call as Sanchez is doing

Disagree with you on Sanchez. Foles doesnt throw that pick that Sanchez did. Sanchez main effectiveness is if the team is running the ball well. His pocket awareness leads to butt fumbles

Are we really picking sanchez apart while on this team? I can forgive the butt fumble just like I forgave Foles below avg performance in most of his games other than last years’s run. Nobody (including Sanchez) looked as bad as Foles that first Dallas game (maybe the bum kolb in the packers game) But to his credit, the kid (foles) bounced back. When a qb holds the ball too long taking unnecessary sacks, that’s as bad as a pick in many ways. Foles was the worst in that regard. But he improved last year and I have every reason to believe he can continue to improve in that department. Sanchez gets a fresh start here. His play thus far shows he deserved it. And lets not forget that Foles (and Vick) didn’t benefit from our extremely effective run heavy offense.

Foles looked good and rebounded from last week. Jordan Mathews acquitted himself nicely with 9 for 104. He put those gloves on which helped. Beau Allen still looks the part and Cary Williams is the heart of the defense IMO. Vinny played well against the run and pass against the pats starters. Ertz is a flat out stud, we better be thankful Eagles drafted him as he was my second round selection for the Eagles. I think Marcus Smith will get his first sack next week as he gets closer to it. Lane Johnson is very important to o line, as we see what the o line is like without him on right side, Barbre is brutal. Celek is tough as nails. Marsh should catch a flight to his home town. Once jmac and coop comes back offense will be fluid and very good.

Russell Wilson is a damn good QB, but he is on Seattle’s team, there’s nothing the Eagles can do about that so what’s your point? I don’t understand your end game, no matter how much you harp on your desire for a mobile QB the Eagles do not have one and I don’t think Chip is listening to you or any other fan about the type of player you want at QB. Who here believe the Eagles will now take a next step forward and get past the WildCard round?

I’m taking bets right now that the Eagles actually regress this season.

Any takers?

The defense is the same and will continue to struggle to get off the field on 3rd down, which points right to Billy Davis.

Billy Davis never succeeded as a defensive Coordinator and we now see why.

He’s a good postion coach at best but is very suspect as a defensive coordinator.

What defensive Coordinator would choose not to start his best defensive lineman?

That’s right, Vinny Curry is the more complete defensive lineman on the team yet he’s still buried behind lesser talent.

Beau Allen is the best DT on the team and he’s a 7th rounder, yet the defensive Coordinator will continue to start Cox and Thorton to hide “Rosie’s high draft pick with Cox.

The offense will regress and Foles will have a reality year.

So…bets anyone?

If the Eagles gets past the Wild Card round I’ll never post here again…

Does anyone want to take them going past the Wild Card round?

Remember..your bet is that you’ll never post on the site again.

One of my favorite things to do on game days when the Eagles are on the road is to come here and watch you call for Foles to be replaced after every play, while he is playing to a 106 QB rating.

One of the things that makes me laugh most is that guys like you and some others clutch onto the fact that “Mike Vick beat Foles in a fair competition”. I can’t believe it’s still mentioned by one of the Vick acolytes every week…..The guy is in another uniform, but we still hear about the major accomplishment… Every time it’s mentioned I see your pain and I love it….
