Eagles’ Defense Must Take Advantage Of Inexperienced Jacksonville Offense

MychalKendricks6Most of the questions with this Eagles team stem from the defensive side of the ball.

The Jacksonville offense will be an ideal opponent for this defense in the first match of the season. This is an opportunity for Billy Davis and his group to start out on the right foot, and get build up some important confidence and chemistry before the Eagles start facing some more established opposition.

The Jaguars are largely an inexperienced team, and the Eagles must take advantage of that. This will be the first regular season contest that this Jacksonville offense takes the field together, and because of the amount of youth and fresh faces, you can expect to see a lot of youthful mistakes

Running back Toby Gerhart is getting his first real shot to be an NFL starter after spending his career backing up Adrian Peterson in Minnesota. The Eagles’ run defense has been pretty solid in the preseason. Defensive lineman Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton might struggle to get pressure on the quarterback, but they hold up very well in run defense. They should be able to keep Gerhart in check.

The Eagles’ secondary gets to face a very talented, but also extremely raw group of receivers. Cecil Shorts, entering his fifth year, is the team’s top target. He led the team with 66 catches for 777 yards and three scores last year, which is actually impressive considering how bad his quarterback play was at times. Shorts is joined by rookies Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson, and Allen Hurns. The young wideouts have been one of the team’s bright spots through training camp, but its a lot to expect them to come in and contribute right away. This is a group that the Eagles’ secondary should have their way with.

The Jaguar offensive line has also struggled to come together during the preseason. Gus Bradley has to go with two rookies on his starting line, with third-round pick Brandon Linder and sixth-round rookie Luke Bowanko at center. Bowanko was not expected to be the starting center, but veteran Mike Brewster had a terrible camp and lost the job. The Jags are also going to be without one of their starting tackles, with Austin Pasztor out with a broken hand. He’ll be replaced by Cameron Bradfield, who got 11 starts a year ago after top draft pick Luke Joeckel went down with a broken leg.

When you look at this offensive line, that’s a group with so much youth and a lack of cohesion, that its going to fall on Billy Davis and the coaching staff to throw a lot of different looks at them to create confusion and give the defense a better chance to succeed.

Eagles should blitz, blitz, blitz up the middle with Kendrick’s & Ryans in the first few series to rat like the Young Center and to get Chad Henne moving laterally where he is ineffective… Like most Pocket QB’s Jenner is most effective when he can stand up tall and step-up in the pocket for his throws
Get him movivibg sideways and he’s in trouble
There should be no sitting back early and pkaying conservative as the Eagles D should set the tone right away and come after him early and often
Eagles should be able to bring pressure and get
4-5 Sacks on Hennee if they remain aggressive
I look for Kendrick’s to get 2 Sacks..

easy peasy, The AFC South is a horrible division and the Jags are the consistent basement dweller. Reading Denny’s article and the inexperience with youth…Kaboom – the birds are going destroy this team.

The NFC South is no worse than the NFC East…
1 Solid Team in each Divisions (Eagles and Colts) then followed with 6 Teams that all around .500 at best or worst..
The NFC East has better Offense’s, but the NFC South has better Defenses

These both are the weakest Divisions in the NFL from Top to Bottom

The Eagles should be able to get pressure without blitzing against a weak Jags O-line. The should save their exotic blitzes for Luck next week…the Jags should be an easy win for us-they stink…a blowout..42-10

Agree.

If they scored less than 30 I’d be surprised. Henne is a no go. If Boetles was starting things might be a bit more interesting…might be a ball game. But Henne?

Colts are a toss up game. Luck has some Farve in him. He can throw you into a game, but he can throw you out of one as well. Don’t keep it close in the fourth though…he’ll beat you.

Colt’s OL may be as bad as the Jaguars… Both Teams lack a strong Running Game… COlts have a very good Young QB with Experienced WR’s.. while the Jags do not and are young, inexperienced across the Board Eagles 33-13 — I hope the Eagles pull some of their Starters by the 4th and let some the #2’s get some work and rest some of the Starters for the upcoming Games… No Need for Shady,Peters,FOles, etc to take extra hits if game is not close…

Paulman, I’ve been back from summering for a week now, and haven’t read anything from GMCliff? Is he feeling OK?
We got some good college games this week ( USC vs. Stanford, Michigan State vs Oregon, Michigan vs Notre Dame) for him to make ridiculous inaccurate draft talent reports about.

“I can tell you a bunch of stories about my communication with him during that process. For example, I interviewed him at the Senior Bowl. At the end of the interview, you always ask for players’ numbers so you can get in touch with them—he asked for my number. And then I would get text messages from him periodically saying, ‘If the Eagles draft me, I will lead the Eagles to championships.’ You know he would send me these text messages.

… So leading up, even the day of the draft, the first day of the draft: ‘If the Eagles draft me I will lead them to championships.’ He was sending me these text messages. Well, we really liked him, and I thought there was a very real chance he was going to end up being a Philadelphia Eagle there. And then of course, Seattle ends up taking him.” …Russell Wilson on his eagerness to come to the Eagles! Thanks for screwing that up for us Andy…smh…Andy Reid did a helluva job screwing us!!!

1st rounder Fletcher Cox,
2nd Michael Kendricks,
2nd Vinny Curry,
the the Seahawks selected Russell Wilson in the 3rd,
before the Eagles selected Nick Foles in the 3rd ( next QB taken after Wilson)
Luck, RG3, Tannehill, Weedon, Osweiller, then Russell Wilson, then Foles

He was picked by Seattle in the 3rd round #75 – We picked Nick Foles #88. Andy Reid is on record saying he had Wilson ranked higher than Foles and would have pick him if he were still there.

In rounds 1 & 2 the Eagles took Cox and Kendricks. Seattle took Bruce Irvin and Bobby Wagner before Wilson.

He has come in and won…and with a weapon like Percy Harvin…he makes the offense explosive! He is the real deal!!!

KB i have to agree with you. Russell Wilson is a winner.

I have liked this kid since I watched him with Gruden on ESPN being evaluated. He played in 2 completely different styles of offenses in college, one with NC State and then Wisconsin, and was great in both. I REALLY wanted the Birds to draft him that year, but AR screwed that one up.

The only downside with Wilson is his size, but Brees is basically the same size and he has done pretty good too!!

Wilson may never have the gaudy stats, but he is a winner and does what his team needs for him to win. Call him a field manager, or a field general, the guy is smart and knows how to do what is needed. Like I said, I would love for him to be on the Eagles, but since he isn’t, I hope he plays well against everyone BUT the Birds!!

Wilson is the real deal. Anybody that says otherwise, is an idiot. They are the total package & favorites again. Very good young QB, power running game, solid WR’s, top notch defense a coach that isn’t a stubborn, egotistical, nor arrogant, a team that utlizes their cap. That’s how winners are built. Not like our won nothing, know nothing, condescending, over rated dopes. Winners don’t ignore one side of the ball. Winners don’t have arrogant coaches, who think they are geniuses, & are nominated demigods by their dopey media & fans. Winners don’t win the salary cap bowl every year. Winners aren’t consistantly $10M- $20M under the cap. Take heed Weaselman & genius, maybe you’ll learn a thing or 2!!!!

Its all about matchups with Seattle. That’s why GB and all there weapons, Lacy, Cobb, Nelson and Rogers and Denver with Manning and his plethora of weapons means absolutely nothing. A QB who completes 55% of his passes and cant carry Rogers on Manngs jock (Kapernick) gives Seattle fits! Sherman said it last year we would much rather play the Mannings of the world instead of the Kapernicks. Once again Seattle has shown us you can shove them 5000 yards passers up your ass we will blow them out but those non-throwing athletes like Kapernck put 30 plus points on us and take us to the last play of the game. Its all about matchups.

Eagles will still beat Seattle in Philly Songs. Its the even-flo thing. No there not a better team but Seattle isnt exactly the same team on the road and they will lose a couple of games, probably 3. They don’t do well with mobile QBs. Newton and the Panthers were a D-Will fumble from beating them. And Luck and the Colts did beat them.

That is there only true weakness.

With that said you are a little overly optimistic about their chances with the Eagles. Eagles will try and push tempo to keep them from substituting – but Seattle doesn’t allow Yac – and Chancellor will give someone a concussion if they try. Also Foles doesn’t respond well to pressure, doesn’t move well, nor does he get rid of the ball quickly – it could be a long night for him.

Seahawjs went into this Season with 2 Question Marks
Their OL and their WR Corps and both looked goid..
They gave a young OL besides LT Okung,
The rest are 25 & Under.. If their OL stats Healthy,
They will be very difficult to lose…
Russell Wilson has been a “Winner” since he played at NC State..
Then to Wisconsin after he already graduated and had 1 year of Eligibilty
And Coach O’Brien didn’t want him to pkay Basebal in the Spring
So he took Graduate Courses and transferred to Wisconsin while O’Brien went with own Recruit in QB Mike Glennon instead
All Wilson did was take the Zbadgers and an entirely new Pro-Style 2 Back a System to the Big 10 Championship
And as far as development, was light years ahead of other Rookies in his class (besides Luck) since he played in the Pistol, Shotgun and Soread System at NC State and a more Pro-Style 2 Back, under Center System
While at Wisconsin and mastered them both..
He’s got a bright future ahead of him, though he will
Probably never wow anyone with his “Passing Stats”
All he does is Win ball games, run an efficient Offense,Protect the Ball
While he Protects himself… Smart, headsy Player who lost his Dad when
He was younger and learned to grow up in a hurry..

And don’t forget Tough throws into Tight windows!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh wait, every WR Wilson completed a pass to was either behind the LOS or wide open.

Now is that because of the “System” or because GBs D is terrible.

His 4 “tight window” throws were all tipped or batted and 2 almost picked.

Love the Tight windows/tough throws bullshit!!

Now actually, Rodgers did have to throw into tight windows all night…his Wrs had Seattle defenders all over their asses. And guess what? He struggled!!!!

What a frikkin’ suprise. All QBs struggle against amazing Ds like Seattle, and Most (not all – some will never look good) will look good when they have wide open guys all night (like Seattle yesterday).

That Seattle offence looks very powerful. The misdirection stuff to Harvin, and play action just opens the field.

vinnietheevictor
vinnietheevictor
September 5, 2014 8:40 am

And before TS or others somehow interpret this as my diminishing Wilson, I am not. I’m just making fun of Koolidiot and his continual “tight windows” shouts.

Wilson is an outstanding QB. Played extremely well last night. He did his job very well. He had guys wide open and he hit them. He really executes those misdirection plays to Harvin well.

He clearly outplayed Rodgers last night.

However, (and again, this doesn’t diminish – its just the truth) He clearly had an easier time of it than Rodgers. Seattle WRs were wide open all over the field. Seattle began the game with the first 4 or 5 passes behind the LOS. What he was doing (simple screens to Harvin and 10-15 yarders to wide open TEs) are precisely what they slag Foles for!

I don’t think this diminished a QB. I think it shows intelligence, poise, and good decision-making.

If Foles had started a Quarter like Wilson did, with about 4 screen passes and a couple short ones to the TE, some people on here would be screaming about how its all dink-and-dunk, Foles noodle arm etc etc….with no understanding how a gameplan can set up plays for the 4th Q. Those short passes, + the power running + GB being terrified of the Harvin runnin sweeps set up the big plays later. How it should be….and how it will be with the Birds this year. At least that’s what they will attempt.

On the other side. The GB WRs were completely blanketed. One or two times did passes find a guy with separation. The rest of the time DBs and safties were stride in stride with Nelson and Cobb (save a bit late whtn the rookie came in, but even he did a good job).

This was because Seattle’s D is good, but also because McCarthy isn’t a good coach and abandoned the running game after the first drive stalled at the 30. Like Reid, McCarthy has no patience….despite early success on the first drive with Lacy, they came out in drive #2 and went pass pass pass pass. Terrible. What I appreciate with Seattle is they stick with their plan. Run Run Run, short screen, run, play action….and never blitz on D. Good stuff.

And the predictable result? Was Roders able to hit those tight windows with tough throws? Of course not. Rogers struggled. Shock. Is he suddenly a bad QB? No. Though he should lean on his TEs more.

koolbreeze

September 5, 2014 12:06 pm

vinniedafool! you always want to ignore the obvious…GB was under pressure not only from Seattle D…they showed they could move the ball on Seattle’s defense, but they were also under pressure from an explosive, efficient Seattle offense with a young QB making plays, making good decisions, good throws, opening up the running game with the read option (giving the beast Lynch more running lanes)
Russell Wilson is the real deal and its about time he gets the credit he deserves as an elite QB that’s one of the best in the league!.
What happened last night was Wilson outplayed and outperformed another elite QB in Aaron Rodgers. McCarthy was forced to abandon the running game because they had to play catch up…not because he’s a bad coach-vinniedafool! Once GB became one-dimensional…the pass rush started to get to Rodgers.. he became uncomfortable and he really was never in rhythm the entire game.

Green Bay did not look like a playoff team last night.
Green Bay dropped 2 interceptions last night.
Clinton Dix had a bad rookie debut, 3 missed tackles and a dropped int. he did have a sack and was in position to make the int.( so there is talent )
Brad Jones IlB was horrible, 2 costly defensive holding penalties and AJ Hawk were over-matched.
Eddie Lacy and Andrew Quarless disappeared ( seahawks took their heart)
Bulaga is too fragile for the NFL game – the Pack have to find a replacement.

Foles dont belong in the conversation with Wilson or Kap…those young QB’s have won tough playoff games against very good teams. Foles hasn’t done that yet. This year is his chance to prove himself…this is the year that Foles will be in some tough games where we need to see the QB make some plays against top rated, tough defenses…not Tampa Bay, Oakland, or weak defenses…

If Foles was QB of Seattle, with that defense, I believe that he would have won some “tough” playoff games as you put it.

Same thing with SF. You want to compare the QB’s like they are playing in a vacuum. Both Seattle and SF defenses were big parts of their teams playoff wins, and conversely, the Eagles defense was sorely lacking last year and did not do enough against the Saints IMO.

Seahawks Defense is big, strong and fast.
Best unit in Football.
Right tackle was a weakness but rookie debut mistakes are expected.
Wilson played well. His read option vision might be the best in the business. He lucked out on the two Green Bay interception drops.
the rest of the NFL has a problem, Percy Harvin is un-guardable right now.
Lynch looks like an MVP candidate.

The Packers WR’s are not a Physical Group..
Nelson, Cobb, Boynkin and their Rookie WR’s can all be intimidated and beat up at the line of Scrimmage with tight coverages..
The PAckers do not have a Top TE’s (Rodgers is Rookie, Quarless is a back-up so they do not have that usual Weapon at TE as in Years Past)
If RT Bualaga is out for any extended period of time, they are in deep Trouble.. His Replacement (Derrick Sherrod) is a 3 Year Vet and former 1st Round Pick of the Packers who has sorely disappointed, he has poor technique, plays soft and is simply not ready for Prime Time as a Starter at OT at the NFL Level..
Look for Packers to call on Free-Agent OT Eric Winston who was released last week by the Seahawks…

Stop it with the ‘lucked out” stuff…every QB catches a break every once in awhile…Foles had so many breaks last year it was ridiculous…and in spite of all the breaks, lucky bounces, cornerbacks falling down and more….we still didn’t get a playoff win last year. Wilson is a top-flight, franchise QB and a proven winner…I wonder if we have that at the QB spot?

Seahawks are a terrible matchup for the Packers. Their front won’t let the Pack establish any running game which forces them to pass which plays into their strength with Rodgers most of the time, but Paul is right. The WRs are not big enough to get open against the physical CBs and safeties for Seattle. They don’t have the great pass catching RB out of the backfield and Sherman shut off an entire side of the field.

On defense, the Pack are terrible against the run which lets Lynch go hog wild making them cheat against the run which gives Wilson a lot of options to choose from.

Seattle didn’t look like they had any SB hangover yesterday.

Lynch had a lot of help going hog wild because his QB is an excellent for the read option which opens up running lanes…they burned GB a few times with it…but GB defense is going to get better. They wont see QB’s like Russell Wilson much this year and will have a lot easier time going up against more stationary QB’s or QB’s that are not good decision makers like Wilson

GB has been bad against the run going back to 2010. Highest rating has been 15 and 2 times in the 20s. Russell Wilson helped but so did a porous run defense and an ultra stud in Lynch.

Why do you guys just make these untrue statements and hope they catch?

Daggolden:
“A QB who completes 55% of his passes and cant carry Rogers on Manngs jock (Kapernick) gives Seattle fits!”

Seconded by Koolidiot:
“good point daggolden…even when Seattle is playing tough defenses and good mobile QB’s like Kapernick…”

And Accepted by TS
“They don’t do well with mobile QBs……..Newton and the Panthers were a D-Will fumble from beating them. And Luck and the Colts did beat them.
That is there only true weakness.”

Reality…..Seattle has played SF with Kaepernick at the helm 4x.

Their record? 3 and 1. Outscoring SF 113 to 50 in those games.

And those “fits” Kaepernic gave them over those 4 games?

61 of 117 (52%) 174yrds/game 3 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

LOL…they say one thing….the opposite is always true!

Oh and BTW TS…

Seahawks are 2-0 vs the Newton led Panthers.

Now wait for it…..over those 2 games Newton has thrown for a grand total of……265 yards (combined!) and led the Panthers to….wait for it….19 points TOTAL in 2 games!

Wow….Kapernick and Newton really give that Seattle team fits!! One averages 12.5 points a game against them, the other 9.5!!!!!

Whatever the “mobile QB” lovers say, the opposite is true!!!!

BTW, “Mobile” Andrew luck had ZERO carries for ZERO yards in his meeting with Seattle.

Guys who can move in the pocket are good. Guys who run around are Bad. Its that friggin’ simple….one day you’ll figure it out!

What makes me laugh is that kooljerk and tsjohnson think the fans on an Eagles message board need to be reminded (almost hourly) how wonderful every black or half black QB in the league is….

WE KNOW THEY ARE GOOD!!! What the hell do you want us to do about it?

Should the city of Philadelphia knock down the Rocky statue and erect three statues of Keapernick, Newton, and Wilson? Would that make you happy and shut the fuck up about other teams QBs?

Our QB is Nick Foles – he’s not as good as the black/1/2 black guys – we get it…. we wont forget in the next couple weeks…

You know they mean the same thing to folk on this blog.

It’s like everyone seems to forget LUCK is a mobile QB. As is Manziel and Smith even has way more athletic ability than he’s given credit for.

But you say “mobile” and they hear “black”

For the Most Ridiculous Post of the Day…
I sent some of the “Hair/Curly Jell” that Russell Wilson uses and buys from my Distributor over to Nick Foles..
Let’s see if this helps Foles stay light on his Feet..

Who gives a fuck? None of them play for the Eagles.

Besides that, only Keapernick, Newton, and Wilson seem to get you moist…. you never shut to fuck up about them.

Then you and that other nitwit criticize people on this board because they like Foles – HELLO…. It’s an Eagles message board…

Mobile QBs (Luck, Rodgers, Wilson) are good.

Running QBs (Kaep, Newton, RGIII, Vick, Manziel) are bad.

Its simple to understand.

You can’t pass for as many yards as Cam has passed for and call him a “running” QB. Luck has only 200 extra yards on him over their first two seasons.

Their numbers – in most things – are almost identical.

Wilson’s passing yards resemble more Kaeps or RG-3 – 400 fewer than Luck.

So no it’s only “simple” to those who have an agenda to fill. Hell the ONLY reason you’re even mentioning Wilson with Luck and Rodgers now is b/c you can’t keep up your tired diatribe about “running QBs” as he continues to Molly Whop the competition.

Irish I’m a little confused other then Koolbreeze, who criticizes anyone for praising Fools? Now Kool and Songs want to see Foles do what he did last year what is wrong with that? I praise Foles constantly and nobody comes at me so maybe I’m missing something.

IrishEagle…I’m convinced…your a racist jerk…LOL…no one ever brings up race except you and a few other rancid, racist, idiots….
The fact of the matter is I dont care if the QB is black, brown, green, yellow, orange, or white…I want a QB that can win a Superbowl. I wanted Johnny Manziel because I think with Chip Kelly, his mobility, arm strength, and leadership qualities he would flourish.
Again…Foles has a shot…he can make me eat crow by performing this year. But I’m not hedging …I am coming straight out and saying that I think he will fail…bottom line…if he proves me wrong…then he has what it takes and lets go Eagles!

There’s a bunch of white dual threat qbs, yet BorishEagle thinks that any mention of a mobile qb means black qb…wow.

But I understand that BorishEagle’s resemblance to being a racist cracker is totally unintentional and not what he really means.

The Jaguars are reportedly giving Alex Henery a workout due to their kicker being injured. What if Henery came in to kick a last second game winning 53 yard field goal against the Eagles ?

I would just throw in the towel and wait for next season.

He ran the Ball 111 Times last Season in 16 Games
Take his 8 Rushing TD’s (mostly QB Sneaks)
About 15-20 Kneel Downs at the end of a half or end of game that they won
(They did win 11 games last year) to run the clock out
And you have about 80-85 Rushes which
3-4 a game or to avoid a Sack and you probably are left
With 3-4 Designed Running Pkays for him..
I watch the Panthers almost every week since I live in Carolina..
Now his first 2 Seasons he did run, but not as much as last year and probably won’t as much this year since they have a healthy RB Trio
Of Wiiliams,Stewart & Tolbert which they haven’t had the last few Seasons..
I am not saying he can’t or doesn’t run,
But he looks to Pass first.. Then run if needed…
