Thoughts From Eagles-Jaguars

folesjagsFoles Overcomes Awful First Half

Chip Kelly will never admit it, but he had thoughts about turning to Mark Sanchez to start the second half.

How could he not?

In the first half of Sunday’s game, Nick Foles played one of the worst halves of football that I’ve ever seen.

Foles was rattled early, and it took him a long time to calm down and regain his confidence. He was sloppy and careless with the football. He held on to the ball way too long at times and was indecisive. He missed open receivers throughout the day. In the first half, he was just a complete trainwreck.

The turnovers were all completely inexcusable, and caused major momentum shifts. Against a better team, Foles’ careless interception in the endzone might have been the final nail in the coffin that cost the Eagles’ the game. He’s got to a better job feeling the pass rush around him, and protecting the football when defenders close in around him. You’re just not going to win many games in this league when your quarterback is a turnover machine. Foles was so bad at protecting the football in the first half, and I haven’t seen an Eagles’ quarterback play so poorly in that regard since Michael Vick against the Cleveland Browns in the opener of the 2012 season.

However, to Foles’ credit, he was able to finish strong and do enough to help the team mount a furious comeback in the second half. He looked considerably more settled, and began to make some better reads and throws. The most important moment came when he found Jeremy Maclin wide open for a 68-yard strike to break the tie and give the Eagles their first lead of the day.

In the second half, Foles went 15/21 for 183 yards and two touchdowns, a remarkable improvement from his first half struggles.

Defense/Special Teams Deserve Most Credit For This Win

Give the Eagles’ defense and special teams all the credit in the world for their efforts in this win.

The Jaguars had all of the momentum in the first half, and there was potential for the situation to really get out of control.

However, the defense was up to the challenge today, and shut down the Jaguars after they went up 17-0.

The defense did an absolutely tremendous job in big moments, their third-down efficiency was off the charts today, holding the Jags to just two successful third down conversions on 14 attempts. I don’t care if it was just Chad Henne and the young Jaguars, it is never an easy thing to hold an opposing offense to such a low rate in this league.

Special teams also more than did their fair share in the win.

Only one game into the year, and its time to rave about punter Donnie Jones again. I don’t think the Eagles have ever had a punter this good. He pinned down the Jaguars deep in their own territory several times, which was key in helping the Eagles keep field position manageable until the offense woke up from their funk.

Darren Sproles supplied the spark that really woke the offense up today, but he also contributed a big punt return that helped set the Eagles up for their second score of the day.

Brandon Bair came up with a blocked field goal.

Finally, rookie kicker Cody Parkey was faced with a 51-yard field goal attempt in the second half to tie the game, and the inexperienced kicker came through.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • LeSean McCoy was limited throughout the day by the Jacksonville defense, but still managed to accumulate 115 yards from scrimmage.
  • Fantastic debut for Darren Sproles, who finished with 11 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown. Sproles is a big-time player that makes game-changing plays. That’s been his trademark throughout his career. We saw today just how much of an impact-player he can be.
  • Zach Ertz came down with three catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.
  • Quiet game for Riley Cooper, who had just four catches for 29 yards.
  • Very nice performances from backup offensive lineman Andrew Gardner and David Molk, who were pressed into service when Evan Mathis and Allen Barbre went down.
  • Jordan Matthews caught two passes for 37 yards in his NFL debut.

Defense

  • Mychal Kendricks was tied for team lead in tackles with six, and also picked up a sack in the first quarter.
  • Malcolm Jenkins stuffed Toby Gerhart for a loss in the first quarter. The Eagles’ run defense was solid through most of the game.
  • Cary Williams was beat by rookie Allen Hurns for a touchdown in the first quarter.
  • Brandon Graham played what I thought was his best game as an Eagle. He was active throughout the game, and had a big stop on Toby Gerhart at the end of the first quarter.
  • Nate Allen got to Chad Henne on a safety blitz to kill a drive on 3rd down with a sack.
  • Connor Barwin always knows when to get his hands up. He batted down a pass on third down.
  • Fletcher Cox was tied for the team lead with six stops, and also ran a fumble back for a touchdown.
  • Trent Cole got the sack on Cox’s fumble recovery.

Special Teams

  • Cody Parkey converted both of his field goals, and was also solid on kickoffs.
  • Donnie Jones does a tremendous job with his punts, but give credit to guys like Brandon Boykin and Bryan Braman for getting in position to down them as well.

Final Thoughts

It was a great character win for the Eagles today, but there are a great deal of concerns about this team moving forward.

The biggest right now is the offensive line. With both Evan Mathis and Allen Barbre down, the Eagles could be in a really rough situation at this position next week.

One of Nick Foles’ best qualities has been his ability to bounce back from rough performances, and he’s going to need to do that in a big way if the Eagles are to stand a chance against the Colts on the road. Foles can’t go into a shell for a half like he did today.

I’m really excited about what the defense and special teams were able to do today. They rose to the challenge and played with a great intensity that helped this team come back. A much steeper challenge awaits them next week.

We have to come to grips with reality here.

This is becoming a reoccurring theme for Foles.

He looks completely lost for an entire half which digs a hole for the team the 2nd half.

How long will Chip deal with this?

The Jaguars are shit!

A real franchise Quarterback comes in and take care of business against shit teams not do everything in his power to keep the opposing team in the game.

Foles will get his clock cleaned and seriously injured if he continue to come out like a deer in headlights again.

Give me a quarterback who want to play before the 2nd half, not a deer in headlights looking to fight back after being the root cause for the team being behind.

Reality is, you are not an Eagles fan, you hate Foles because he ain’t dark enough for your liking, & you are a fucking fraud. Go root for the Skins, Seahawks, Niners, or whatever your soup du jour is today! He looked lost early, but managed to win. Try worrying about the real abortion on the the team- The defense! Go get some inoculations & go away!

The Jags are not shit. I posted a comment a few weeks back stating that Gus Bradley has his D playing well. I knew this wasn’t going to be a cake walk. But kudos to our D for not giving up, they could have easily thrown in the towel. Next weeks game should be a shootout

I’m putting it out there right now. The Eagles will not. I repeat.”I WILL NOT”give Nick Foles block buster money in a new contract.

Some can argue that Foles is slowing up the progress of Chip Kelly’s offense and the Eagles could easily have 2 more TD’s a game with a QB who is not afraid to pull the trigger when receivers are running wide up down field.

When are we going to see a long pass to a reciever running in stride or in tight coverage?

Foles is scared and I pray Chip Kelly see what we see here.

Foles is a backup QB.

All we can say is the Eagles are fortunate to be 1-0
But they did rallied, hung in there and got the “W”
Which at the end of 60 Minutes, is all you can ask for
This is how it is in the NFL, a couple of plays here or there usually make the
Difference between Winning and Losing.
Foles and the entire Offense played like crap in the 1st Half,
Defense gave up big plays, but the Eagles kept Playing
Big Games Defensively by Cox,Graham, Kendrick’s,
Barwin and both Safeties Jenkins & Allen..
A great Game by the Punter & Special Teams
Sproles with the big Play on 4th & 1 which finally woke up the Offense..
Maclin,Ertz,Sproles & McCoy all were active
Now time to get ready for Colts, check where the
O/Line is and prepare for a shot-out with the Colts
Who stuffed the Broncos Running Game for the most part
and Eagles will have to beat them thru the Air with the Pass

Do note that the Following “Good Teams” are all 0-1
After yesterday
NFC – Packers,Saints,Bears,
AFC – Patriots,Colts, Ravens,Chiefs,

So lots of Big Games next Week for no one wants to Start
At 0-2…

How can you say the entire offense played like crap in the first half when receivers were running free and Foles right out miss fired or patted the ball until the linemen got to him?

how long do you expect the offensive line to hold their blocks?

It wasn’t the whole offense.

There were plays when every player did their job on offense only to have to play implode because of Fole’s indecisions, so if we’re going to give credit to Foles when the offense clicks against the likes of the woeful raiders last year, then we must place the blame on him when the offense stalls due to his first half jitters.

This is now something we can come to expect from Foles and that’s not good.

I look at the quarterbacks drafted in his class and have matured and take full control of their offenses.

This Eagles offense would be explosive if we had a Russell Wilson, Kaepernick,or even RG3 guided by Chip Kelly.

Mark Sanchez is better option because he slides in the pocket better when there’s pressure.

Foles is just not the guy who can get this team on to the level to compete for a Championship.

We don’t need just a guy who looks to limit mistakes…You need an assassin at quarterback that have the stuff to rip a team’s heart out.

Foles is not that guy and I’ll be here to say I told you so when we finally get that guy in place.

Hoying was not the guy!

Rodney Peete was not the guy!

Mcnabb was a franchise Quarterback with all the tangibles but was caught with Reid as a stubburn head coach who had no respect for the run game.

I told everyone that Kevin Kolb was shit when everyone here was touting him as the next Joe Montana. He was shit…”Had a stronger arm than Foles” mind you.

Michael Vick had the tangibles yet refused to learn how to protect himself.

Now, we’re here with Foles who is just good enough to beat bad teams.

Foles has an average arm, still plays scared, and lack the accuracy or deep balls.

The running game hides Foles and opposing teams know this.

Foles didn’t bring us back. ok?

Sproles brought us back.

This offense flows from the run game, so why not get a QB to compliment the run game?

Foles is a liability in this offense.

you missed a few.

Hoying was shit, so was Kolb, but when I mention those you guys called me a racist.

I was right then and I’m right about Foles.

He is what is.

Foles is everything we seen in the 1st half and everything we seen in the 2nd half.

Not good enough to win against playoff caliber teams and you must win against playoff teams to win it all.

I think you missed those points, so don’t just pick points out of context from my comment…address the whole.

Foles is not the answer if we are looking to contend for a Super Bowl.

The defense have improved and has the special teams.

Foles is the weak link on this team.

your on the money Songs! It should also be mentioned that Jax lost their best player on defense, Jonathan Cyprien AND his backup…and suddenly Foles can hit a few passes. Foles is ok when all of these factors are working:
a. no pressure and he can sit in the pocket all day to find receivers
b. wide receivers are wide open
c. the running game is working well
But dont look for Foles to beat the good teams for you. He is choking under the pressure…a number of observers say that Sanchez outplayed him in camp and if it was a competition he would have lost…
Foles is a very nice kid, a team guy…
He’s not a leader that can we can win the big one with…he chokes!

I seen all the NFC East games and Foles is 3rd behind Romo and RG3 as far as talent goes from the quarterback position, and this offense would be unstoppable with either of those 2 in an Eagle’s uniform.

If Foles was even 15% more accurate in the first half Maclin could have had a monster day. He got behind the defense more than once and they werent all busted plays on the defenses part.

Watching DeSean in Washington he had 10 targets and caught 8. They were definitely trying to get the ball in his hands in space.

His true impact wont come until they can pass block long enough to get down the field. Right the Skins can’t hold for 5-7 step drops. Subway Bob was getting murdered.

Although he has a cannon his downfield accuracy is suspect as well.

Desean had 5 first downs, 3 catches that went for zero yards each, and a reverse that lost 9 yards. He didn’t play bad just average, his QB couldn’t get him the ball in full stride ( dink and dunking ) In the west coast offense( Gruden’s offense) the number one wide receives has to catch slants and DJax doesn’t venture over the middle.

It’s going to be a long year on gcobb if the usual suspects who either lack football knowledge or for some reason dislike our QB for unknown reasons besides just not wanting to admit he’s a top notch quarterback.

We routed an NFL team 34-17. Ya’ll act like we are Alabama and the Jags are Florida Atlantic or something… no… the Jags are an NFL team, there are only 32 teams that are filled with the best players in the league. We routed an NFL team 34-17. Our QB who last year had the 3rd best season in NFL history, came back from a piss poor first half (the entire offense played terrible in the 1st half) to throw for a 70% completion rate and 2 touchdowns in the 2nd half.

Our special teams looked better than I’ve ever seen them, and we have a kicker who will constantly kick the ball to the back of the endzone on kickoffs, and a dangerous return man in Sproles, and possibly the best punter in the league.

Also the Defense flat out played good football. The only two touchdowns the Jags scored came off short fields, and we stopped the run very well and put a lot of pressure on the QB. Very good defensive effort that looks promising for the future.

So we routed an NFL team and showed some excitement on D and Special Teams, yet ya’ll just bitch like women on here. The only worry to take from this game is if Evan Mathis will be okay.

There is your daily dose of reality, now continue with tearing the 1-0 Philadelphia Eagles apart.

good points antitrust.

One thing to point out about the defense however, is that they were playing against Chad Henne and 3 out 4 rookie recievers. True, we shut them out in the second half, but if the special teams had not bailed the out by blocking a field goal, and the Jags miss another, it could have easily been 23-0 at halftime.

Second thing is that regardless of the outcome, Foles did not play well overall. I believe that the Jags and Gus Bradley have got a good defense, so that may be part of the reason, but we will be playing many more good defenses this year and we need to have a reliable and consistant QB to lead them. I would expect that Foles will come out very strong next week, at least based on how he performed last year he seems to follow up a poor performance with a strong one. To his credit, Nick came back out and played better in the second half, but it was not the desired way that I wanted to start the season.

Lastly, Kelly will need to look at his play calling. The league has caught on to his double screen play. I want to see more mis-matches with Ertz and a stronger running attack up front to help open things up. Aside from Sproles TD, I thought that Shadey and Sproles had to fight for every yard they got, not the large holes like last year.

Next up is the Colts.

GO BIRDS!!

There are going to be ups and downs in every game. The only thing that matters is a W or a L. The whole offense struggled in the first half, and the line had a tough game, but we came back strong and routed an NFL team who I can see being bothersome in a lot of games this year (Jax has good coaching, especially on D). There are many more positives to take from this game than negatives. We know our offense will be good.. but the way our D played, especially the front 7, was very encouraging. Kendricks, Cox, Barwin, Boykins.. are all top NFL players and will just get better. Plus our special teams unit has a chance to be really special. Overall, I felt really good at 425 pm yesterday!

A win is a win……doesn’t matter how you get the win as long as you win.

Songs, let me introduce myself. My name is Igglessb and when I decide to troll someone, you, I tear them apart and make them look like a fool.

Are you serious about RGVick and Homo being better QB’s then Foles? Clearly you have ZERO football knowledge!!!! What is the MAIN stat that matters as far as regular season stats for QB’s goes? WINS
Foles-1
Homo-0
RGVick-0

You have stated over and over again how great RGVick is and how the addition of DJax was going to take the Red Potatoes over the top. Well….they scored 6pts against a team that went 2-14 last season AND lost the best defensive rookie in the league to an injury in the 2nd Quarter. What does that tell us? RGVick is a NFL back-up at best right now. Maybe with some good coaching he can be a decent starter in this league.
As far as Homo goes, HE IS the reason the Cowpokes lost yesterday. End of argument.

So since you don’t want stats showed to you to show who is better, I showed you why Foles is the best QB in the NFC East. Oh btw, the Texans played against the team that had the #1 pick in the draft soooooo how are they better then the Jags? Remember you can’t use any stats to prove the Texans are better.

Your turn fool………

Haha…It was so funny reading the posts during the game…some of you cats were all over the place with your comments.

Ugly first half, pretty good second half. But still a lot of questions/concerns, across the board.
Starting with the WR corps…Had the Eagles not made a real effort not to get Cooper the ball on screens and quick outs he’d have no catches. He’s no threat after catch, 30 yards receiving? Give Matthews his spot!
Had the Jags corner received safety help like he thought Maclin would of also had a 30 yard receiving game. Ertz needs to see more passes come his way.
Overall the Eagles defense played ok..But the Jags offense isn’t good, they were able to capitalize on the Eagles mistakes, but they will struggle to move the ball 80 yards down the field against any team. Eagles defense is still suspect, will have a better idea next week. Cary Williams , poor 1st half, he’s better when he’s in press coverage, he’ll give up that deep ball. The 1st half was all on the offense, 90% Foles….even read posts where Paulman wanted Foles sat down…haha…for Sanchez…haha…wow…the first half of the first game??? haha..

Eagles got some good play from Barwin, Graham, Allen, Fletcher, Kendricks.

Real….Fletcher Cox was a problem yesterday. I dont want to hear about the 3-4 defense change. JJ Watt makes plenty of plays from the DE position in the 3-4.

Ive been waiting for that for a while. He doesnt need 15 sacks. He could have 8 and be a beast this year blowing up the run demanding doubles and freeing up our linebackers.

Disagree with you on Cooper. His size in this offense present problems and he had more then a few open plays in the first half.

Foles atrocious first half with his mediocre second left a ton.

Scary thing….he still threw for 300 and they still had play 4 plays over 20 yards in the passing game.

2nd half mediocre? 15-21 for 183 and 2 TDs.

Little bit of stat filler in those numbers Bugs. He still missed some passes badly and he made some checkdowns even though he had people open in the middle of the defense and Maclin behind the defense.

Sproles touchdown opened up the game, without it. I dont think he was bringing the birds back because he was off. Again it was dirty ugly win and I will take it. I wouldnt have sat Foles. But all in all he was a C at best.

I am not saying that he played well, but I thought mediocre was a bit much for his 2nd half. I thought that he moved better in the 2nd half extending plays after he got pounded in the 1st half (some his own fault).

I think that C or C- is fair considering the huge size disaster that was the first half.

Yes Cox was…. Curry was solid too, in a limited role…Caught a glimpse of Curry coming out the game, his body language showed some frustration….

What open plays did Cooper have in the first half? I must of blinked…I missed them…I didn’t hear his name til the second half….The ball has to be thrown and the ball has to be caught, that’s what making a play is…Cooper made no plays!

3 of thes 20+ yard plays going to Ertz…..makes sense, not gonna find a lot of LB’s to cover Ertz….I think you’ll start seeing teams try throwing a CB his way from time to time…But then his size will then present a problem with smaller CB’s…”pick your poison” I guess.

Foles had a solid second half…But he won’t get “kudos” from me or the endorsement that he “led the Eagles to a victory”….
The game ball should go to the defense! Put in a bad spot from the beginning of the game, only allowing a field goal in the last 3 quarters….yeah, the defense gets my “kudos”…gotta give it while I can, the D is still suspect.

The play calling and the pace of the game really helped Foles in the 2nd half..He didn’t have to do too much, he was able to get the ball out quicker, didn’t have as much pressure coming at him.

Garbage to sit Foles after one bad half of football. That is exactly what Boomer Esiason said at halftime. Let’s create a QB contreversy after the first week and basic ruin any chance of Foles developing. He responded and played well in the 2nd half.

Andrew Luck has had a lot of bad first halves of football and then brought Indy back too. I am not saying that Foles is Luck, but what I am saying is that you have to give the guy a chance to play.

Real, I agree about Matthews. I think that it will play out at some point in the season and Cooper will be gone next year. I don’t think that he does enough to warrant that contract. I think that Biglion said that he woulda taken Benjamin at that spot and he had a huge 1st game while Smith was inactive.

Jags offense is not good, but anytime you shut down any NFL offense for a half, I will take it.

Honestly they should go to Ertz until the defense stops it. He should have a huge season which will draw some pressure away from the outside WRs and the RBs out of the backfield. They have 2 really good TEs that they can use to dominate.

Was Really great to see Sproles out there on kicks and in the offense. Love that guy! I hope he can stay healthy all season, because he is a real difference maker.

Thanks for the comments zilents, you could not see that from the TV shots. I also thought that he was not getting open. I hope that he and. Foles will get more on the same page, Cooper also for what it is worth.

Watching Manning last night brought back one of my biggest concerns with Foles. He just seems too deliberate, takes too long to get rid of the ball. Manning and some of the other top QB’s will be getting the ball out so quick that it negates any attempt at a pass rush. I know that you need quick recievers who can get separation immediately, but it is something that I want to see Foles make improvement. I had hoped they would have addressed it in the off season, but it didn’t look like it against the Jags.

And Matthews was wide open on crossing routes at least 3x in the game.

The good side of this is this wasnt the offense being figured out….this was all self inflicted.

I think you see a more run heavy look with screen etc the next 3 weeks until they get healthy or get Lane back.

Long slow developing may not work with backups. However I do want to see Tobin at RT.

Firstly ,kudos to songs ..I have one wish for this Xmas ,that some how some way we learn with technology how to block songs on G Cobb site. It’s a pleasure to read some of the passionate insightful comments ,however from the true fandom…we all understand that as Eagle fans who truly bleed green ,we are many times jaded by hopes ,desperation ,and starvation for a Lombardi trophy..like others I agree ,how bad it looked early on for the franchise ,it’s fortunes at QB ,it’s defense was also on its heels …That’s why they play 60 minutes and why football in its entirety is such a stage for drama queens to act out there frustrations snap by snap…a coach is more focused on the goal ,continuity and staying the course..myself included ,we’d all be better for it with that evil word patience..paulman had a quick hook ,and admittedly so did I..it was that bad early on..guys like Koop and songs are just haters ,so we all filter there comments based upon a bias and in songs case a predjudice…I thought Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier a half century ago? Let’s not lose sight ,the skins ,and cowgirls are as bill parcels said it best ,what there records say they are ,and tonight a G men team learning a new system ,will as per the norm take time to absorb it all ,and with she li at the helm we can only hope that the birds sit atop the east ,I truly believe the best thing happened yesterday ..NFL games across the league (with the notable exception of Seattle) looked similar, and let’s all be real here ..if not for shipping pencil neck henerey ,we lose this game …5touchbacks ,two field goals ,including a 51 harder to tie the game …this is why instead of a home opener L,we didn’t hear (I gotta do a better job) we have a coaching staff with kuhonies ,they addressed the thin leg ,and replaced him with clubber lang…noticeable contributions ,from Barwin who is a force ,always around the ball…graham who perhaps either justified his lofty pick and or is increasing his value as a commodity to others ..the back end is still a concern ,and with a better pass rush (where was ) currey? It’s a drama ,with songs as the court jester ,and we all must admit ,Sundays ,Mondays and Thursdays are now relevant again..it’s going to be fun..this is just week one and already we’ve shot the sheriff and then brought him back …foles is like the thrilla video ,he’s resurrected …and so is our season ..thanks to chip for Cody Parker ..my Xmas in sept ..

SONGS… I don’t know if you noticed but in the Cowboys game there was a lot of Red jerseys. Fans here in the DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth) have had enough of the Romo mistakes and would rather sell their tickets then go to the game. Romo has no excuses this time. His offensive line is above average and he has good weapons. Romo could have never bounced back like Foles did last night. RGIII is just horrible. New coach same results as last year. Eli… Well Eli is declining. Was it me or did anyone see Dez quit? That guy is in top shape and the reason he walked to the locker room was because of dehydration.

I am not happy with the 1st half. But Foles rebounding and deliver the “W” is a good thing to see. I can’t remember the last time I felt good about our QB. McNabb was the closest we had to a franchise QB and after hearing him in the broadcast booth I don’t know how we won so many games. He’s not the brightest light in the room. Defense adjusted and played very good throughout the game. All good teams adjust to what the opponent is doing. Special teams were stellar. And our kicker was very good.

No doubt Biggy, but Smith looking more and more like a long range project, we could probably list half a dozen players or more that could be helping this team right now. I know that you can’t make EVERY move correctly, but with all the time and energy spent on scouting and drafting, your First Round Pick needs to see the field in the first year. It is still early and maybe he will surprise us all (I hope he does) but at this point you cannot help but be disappointed and look at the other players who could be helping us now.

I am not sold on Maclin’s Knee or toughness to last an entire 16 Game Schedule.. Nicks would be a nice addition to the WR Corp as its the teams weakest link right now… Plus Nicks would love to get back at the Giants and knows the NFC East and NFC Conference very well .. It appears so… Barbre to miss 3-4 Weeks with High-Ankle Sprain and
Mathis closer to about 7-8 Weeks..
Lane Johnson out 3 more Weeks so Eagles will likely have Molk at Guard
then Gardner at RT with D Kelly as a roving back-up with Matt Tobin who is still expect to be out another Week or so…

I still say if you fix the Defense, and we will have a better chance at being elite…

What do you think???

Look around the NFL GMCliff
Look at all the Teams that lost and are 0-1 (are they still 10,11,12, Win Teams…)
Now Look at the other Teams that Won and are now 1-0, but how many of these Teams as 10,11,12 Win Teams..

The 2 Surprise Teams in the NFL in 2014 are the Dolphins and Vikings
the 2-3 Real Disappointing Teams will be the Chiefs, Ravens & Cowboys
lets see the 4 Teams tonight for their could be a surprise team like the Chargers or Lions come out of the 1st Week flying high…

Saints D gives up 37 pts,
Bears lose lead at hone versus Bills
Steelers D gives up 27 to Browns Offense
Patriots give up 250 Yards on teh Ground
Broncos cling on to a 24-0 Lead at Home

There are no more good Defenses around the NFL
Take Seattle and then a drop off to the Panthers, Bengals, 49ers, Cardinals and maybe add the Vikings under Zimmer and
who has shut down Defenses ?

I believe the 2nd half Eagles defense is who they really are and thats a top 5-10 defense

They’re certainly not the Seahawks or Niners but the Birds have alot of potential to climb the defensive charts this year

For me, even if I accepted that reasoning, that still is no reason, or excuse to not shore up the Defense…..make no mistake about it – It’s not…

Because if they did…..They would be a much better team – from top to bottom.

To accept that Paul to me is asinine – You mean to tell me that just because the majority of Defenses around the league are average at best, …..that we(The Eagles) should just be content with mediocrity – and appreciate it – and not improve the talent base huh???……

LOL!!! I don’t accept that logic at all…That’s just dumb…

What it proves is our society has a selective indignation in regards to violence. Too easy to hurl shame tactics. we are a nation of laws. The laws are clear in regards to individuals who either assault or have been assaulted. The video showed just what I expected. Two people in a physical altercation with one getting the worst of it. If he was the agressor his ass would be under the jail. He wasn’t. She was. It’s unfortunate, but I don’t need ray Rice and his now wife to OPEN MY EYES about domestic violence. I grew up with it in my own house. I know friends and family who have as well. We all just like to politicize and sensationalize it based on the status of those involved. Meanwhile some regular asshole in everyday America is either stomping the shit out of his/some female or some female is doing the same to some dude because she can. Welcome to America where we act surprised and offended by shit we see or pretend not to see everyday.

There are separate issues at play here.

1. The NFL is lying about not seeing the video. And the fact that they gave him 2 games after seeing the video says to me that Goodell is full of shit about “The Shield” and moral high ground and needs to resign ASAP.

2. The CBA is clear about double jeopardy. I respect the ACLU b/c they often defend scumbags b/c of the larger civil liberties at play – it becomes a slippery slope. NFLPA allows this to stand (which they are punks they likely will) it says a bad precedent that other players can get ensnared in for much lesser offenses.

3. No one feels sorry for Ray Rice.

If she left she may have no where to go. AND about a quarter of women are killed by their abusers AFTER they live. She may really fear for her life. Fear she may lose custody of her child. Fear she may not have a safe place to turn.

Still think we win 10 games.

I think we have seen Nick Foles work to play better and we will see it again. As bad as it was his final stats are NFL starter Stats. The whole offense (not just Nick) looked like they were not ready to deal with the intensity of the Jaguars. Second half they scored 27 points. If we full games played the way the O played we will see the 40+ and 50+ offensive games.

I think if we hadn’t set the idea in our heads that we would score a Million against the Lowly Jags reactions would be more tempered.

In the End We are 1 and 0

Billy Davis get a clue. Amazing how Brandon Graham plated more in the 2nd half and all of the sudden there was a pass rush and plays being made all in the backfield. Graham ended up playing about 25 snaps which still is comical. Boykins is fucking out of here he played 23 snaps. Unbelievable. 23 snaps. He is gone.

Graham also played for Conner Barwin who I am also starting to question what he does. I know I know he knocks some passes down and supposedly drops back well but as far as making game-changing plays and hearing his name called he really needs to be replaced on passing downs. I never see him following a TE down the field so Im wondering how “dynamic” he is. Eagle fans have been clamoring for Graham, Curry and now Boykins to play more. It looks like we have been right all along. I have no problem with Cole coming from one side and Graham and Curry from the other with Kendricks blitzing.

Dag I’ve long given up on trying to understand a switch to a 3-4 with 4-3 players. But there is still no excuse to not find a way to get your best players on the field more. I give the D credit for remaining stout after being placed in a hole by the O’s turnovers, but I’m also aware of who we played. But a win is a win and I take them anyway I can. Season’s still early for Billy Davis too.

Graham played both the ‘Jack’ and and the ‘Predator’ positions yesterday. He subbed for both Cole and Barwin.

I’m surprised you are questioning Barwin after the game he played yesterday. I was at the game and it looked like he was all over the field making plays.

He knocked down two Chad Henne passes on third down in key spots. Those are game changing type plays. He also defended a pass 15 yards down-field on a third down. I thought he played well yesterday.

I know what he is saying Irish, Those were plays he made, but they in no way can be classified as game changing.

No one is worried about Connor Barwin. He’s okay for what he is asked to do, but I agree with Dag, we need an upgrade from him , because he is not a game changer.

The Eagles envision Marcus Smith at his position – he is his backup – and I think they know Barwin is serviceable, but not impactful.

Look for them to pursue getting Randy Gregory, and Benardrick McKinney in this year draft to solidify our LB core of the future with Kendricks, and finally get real Pass Rushers – something else Barwin isn’t very good at.

Graham changed the whole defense when he entered the game. He destroyed RBs, he destroyed the OT he was a force. He is better than Cole, he is better than Barwin. He plays the run and is your best pass rusher. Its that simple.

Word is in the Graham Camp that he is bolting once Free-Agency comes and is looking to go to a Team that runs a 4-3 to give him an opportunity to Start and to play in a System where he can make more plays and eventually get a bigger $$$..

Hey Patrik,
My Assesment on DC Butch Davis is that his Schemes are a
Basic, Read & React type of Defense.. He does not Blitz often nor does he change looks very often… I don’t like his sit back and react passive posture and wish the Eagles were a more attacking and aggressive Defense and especially with their
Front 7.. I will be honest and think that with all the changes last year going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 may have had something to do with him being conservative and cautious approach, but now in 2014 with virtually the same starting line-up in Year 2 of his Defesen, I want to see more pressure, more exotic looks, blitzes, players moving around and just overall a more attacking style of Defense which I understand comes with some risks
but I just go nuts when Watching the Eagles Play a un-mobile or inexperienced QB’s and allow that QB to remain Comfortable and get into a Rhythm.. and going back to last Year, we saw lots of QB’s like Rivers,Alex Smith, Matt Cassell, Carson Palmer,Scott Tolzien and Kyle Orton just stand back and be comfortable in the Pocket… I believe you have to attack young & un-mobile QB’s early and often in games to get them uncomfortable and moving around where they are likely to make poor throws and decisions..
As far as Butch Davis prior 2 Stops before coming to the Eagles (Browns & Cardinals) I simply did not watch those Teams enough to see if there is a similar pattern to his Schemes and Philosophy, though I feel there probably is..
Overall I wished the Eagles had a more aggressive DC but I will give This Season to see the Improvements in Year #2 under Davis.. They have to insrease the Pressure for the Eagles go against a lot better QB’s this Season than last and they will have to bring their “A” Game and get more pressure and not be so Predictable to the Top QB’s
Eagles will face A Luck,Kapernick,Cam,Newton, C Palmer, R Wilson, A Rodgers as well as Eli,RG3 & Romo Twice so the Bar will have to be raised…

Now me and Cliff don’t agree on much but you are 100% correct on Graham. This overvaluing after 1 game is nonsense. Let him have 5 sacks by mid season and lead in hurries etc. This role is perfect for him. He’s a tweener and not a full time player. More than like he will double d it this year, dominate then disappear depending on matchup.

BG balls when he gets in period, they believe the system is more important. He had only two less sacks than Barwin last year with only a quarter of the snaps. Pro Football Focus had both Curry and BG getting more pressure on a per snap basis than everyone on the team, but nah, the scheme is most important.

The same way it’s more important to keep our best corner in Brandon Boykin on the bench while the other dbs get roasted…yeah, it’s more important to have size on the outside than skill.

He was given an opportunity. After his sack barrage 2 years ago many felt he would lead the league in sack the following year – and he was penciled in to start – but lost his spot during training camp, because his pattern of inconsistent results revealed he just wasn’t that good…and I agree bruh….

He had a good game; He’s had good games before, and it’s meant nothing in terms of his overall season….I’ve seen this from Brandon Graham before…it never last.

ProFootball Focus also had the Redskins offensive line and the 3rd best line in the NFL. Their stats are highly subjective and IMO flat out wrong at times.

If you saw the Redskins play you saw that was a bullshit stat aided by inflated numbers.

In the 3-4 both OLBs are not pass rushers only. Barwin does more in run defense and pass coverage then Cole does and its not close.

As for Boykins he excels in the slot. He is able to make plays with his speed and hands. On the outside its an entirely different world and his play may not be as well.

Stop it with the scheme nonsense. Every god damn coordinator in the NFL has a scheme. Yall act like every 3-4 is the same etc. Brian Orakpo is a better pass rusher than Graham and he got 10 chances to rush in the Texans game because of matchups.

This dumbass Madden logic that you put every pass rusher on the field etc etc is nonsense. What is Grahams instincts on the run? How does he play screens. Can he diagnose the flat at all?

But hey just start him and let him rush the QB all day because thats all that matters.

So you watch and chart every play, and every player, and their responsibility on every play, like PFF does? Do you also get paid by NFL teams like they do? Sorry they have more credibility than you.

The Madden logic would be not getting your best players on the field. Pass rush is the first step to good pass defense, and not getting your best rushers on the field led to them being bottom 5 in pass defense, and bottom10 in points allowed. I’ll remain skeptical until they can manage a respectable ranking.

Pass rush in the 3-4 is not only at the OLB spot. JJ Watt is the most disruptive 3-4 pass rusher in the league and he plays DE. Most 3-4 defenses feature one outside pass rusher. In this defense right now its Trent Cole. If Trent Cole was playing doodoo brown then I would say put in Graham but he isnt. Both Cole and Graham on the field in base 3-4 would get exposed in the passing game because they are beyond limited in coverage.

If you think ProFootball Focus gets paid by the NFL your nuts. If you think they know what assignments certain players have your nuts. Hence some of their out of wack analysis on offensive play and pressure.

They are trying to do sabremetrics in football where its much more subjective than baseball where the numbers dont lie.

My buddy scouts lineman for Bleacher Report. He loves Lane Johnson out of the top 10 lineman drafted last year. Many on here think otherwise. I happen to agree with him. However he will be the first to tell that scouting lineman on both offense and defense is subjective since you dont know their assignment.

Let Graham breathe. If he continues his play it will be hard to keep him off the field. However more than likely he will be up and down all year dependant on matchups.

He was expected to start over an aging Trent Cole, and he couldn’t get it done..

Boykins has had games he has started, or stepped in, due to injuries to the starters…He can’t play outside …period

Izell, you don’t even recognize the difference between JJ Watt’s system and this one. You know why JJ Watt is blowing shit up? He plays in a one gap 3-4, not a two gap like the one the Eagles run. Ask JJ Watt to two gap and his numbers would drop, and they would be wasting his talent.

Like they waste the talent of Cox, Curry, and Graham in this two gap system.

Skayne, I understand the difference between a one gap and two gap…its the exact reason I dont go over the top on Fletcher Cox and pass rushing numbers. All I want from Cox is to be active and disrupt and he will be beyond valuable. Dont need 15 sacks from him in this scheme.

As for Graham I agree with Cliff…his competition is Cole not Barwin. Barwin is not asked to be a primary pass rusher that job is put on Cole and Davis ABSOLUTELY LOVES blitzing and rushing Kendricks, Who in IMO is a superior talent to Graham and I would want the defense schemed around him.

I said in beginning of the year the two most important players on the field defensively are Cox and Kendricks. That is what Bill Davis is scheming for with this defense. I think it is fairly obvious the player on defense that this defense is built around is Kendricks.

Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry played 35% of the plays as the 2nd teamers —

Agreed. His name is dirt based on when he was drafted and who we passed up (HE WHO RESIDES WITH THE SEAHAWKS). I blame the eagles for how this kid has been yo-yo’d and mismanaged. Linebacker, Dlineman, salary cap adviser, cheerleader ambassador, doorman; you name it.

I told you TSJ
The Titans,Texans at least have decent Defenses
And solid Running games… If Jake Locker actually stays healthy
The Titans may surprise.. Colts will not runaway this year
They just aren’t that good outside of QB Luck & WR’s

I don’t know what’s worst Eli’s play or the continued excuses the national media makes for his piss poor play. They’re are going to run out of olineman and recvrs to blame soon. even with his bad start, I’d take Foles over him. eli is the worst qb in our weak division.

Look, the NFC East isn’t at its strongest, but for how bad everyone thinks the the other teams are, we only had one victory in the East last year with the final score larger than a single possession.

Izell, terrible is maybe too strong like TS said the best of a bad bunch. I root hard for my birds but this defense is going to get torched by any good offense. I do think they beat the Colts but it may be a shootout.

I also witnessed my sister get here ass handed to her by her boyfriend to the point where he threw her down a flight of hotel stairs and she was all bloodied. I at 14 years old beat the living shit out of him and threw him down a flight of stairs. I didn’t understand now but all I knew my sister was hurt and I got angry but soon after that she got mad at me and protected him and come to find out she hit him first and started the whole thing but hey a man hit a woman and that’s what we think is wrong. Double standard I don’t know it’s a fucked world

Agree.

I think it made her life even MORE difficult. TMZ is the fucking devil. But it’s not just about Rice. Her life and their child’s life is at play too.

Too have to relive that. To be FURTHER embarrassed months later. Just not cool.

I beleive this “Oh we have a deal on the drug testing” has a lil something to do with the NFLPA agreeing not to press the Rice issue.

It’s just too convenient. I know they’d been working on it, but they still had some good distance. Now it’s “Oh yeah we’re gonna vote on it” – yeah. okay.
